In June 2021, commercial lobster diver Michael Packard embarked on a routine morning dive off the coast of Provincetown, Massachusetts. While diving along the ocean floor, he suddenly felt a massive shove and everything went completely dark. Packard initially feared he was inside the jaws of a great white shark.

However, he soon realized he felt no sharp teeth and suffered no puncture wounds. He could feel massive muscles contracting around him inside a giant wet chamber. He was actually trapped inside the closed mouth of a feeding humpback whale that had accidentally engulfed him while lunging for a school of sand lance fish.

Packard still had his breathing regulator in his mouth, allowing him to stay alive in total darkness. As he struggled inside, the uncomfortable whale rose to the ocean surface and began violently shaking its head. Within forty seconds, the giant mammal tossed Packard back out into the open sea, where his crew rescued him with only soft tissue damage.
