It might look like a sci-fi movie poster, but this is a real image of galaxy M77! Learn how the intense gravitational force of a central black hole creates a mesmerizing glow and the surprising truth about the giant 'star' in the picture.

00:00Okay, you have to see this new NASA image.
00:03NASA has released an insane new galaxy image,
00:06and the secret behind its mesmerizing glow is actually a black hole.
00:11So it might look kind of like a sci-fi movie poster,
00:14but this is actually a new real image of the galaxy Messier 77,
00:19or M77 for short, captured by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope.
00:24Now, M77 is a barred spiral galaxy, and at its center is a black hole.
00:30And the intense gravitational force of this black hole
00:33has tons and tons of gas and dust falling toward it.
00:37And as this gas and dust accelerates, hurtling towards the black hole,
00:41it gets hot, creating radiation that, as we can see in the image, glows brightly.
00:47But the big star of light that emanates from the galaxy's center in this image
00:52isn't actually part of the galaxy at all.
00:55It's actually an optical effect caused by the telescope itself.
00:59But whatever the reasons behind its appearance,
01:03I personally am completely taken aback by this crazy galactic snapshot.
01:08It's seriously too cool.
