00:00Paul Newman wasn't too excited to star in The Young Philadelphians because he wanted to return
00:05to the stage. Newman had been given a few challenging roles in movies, such as in
00:11Somebody Up There Likes Me and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, but at this point in his career,
00:16he craved the live aspect of theatre and the vulnerability that came from being in front of
00:21an audience. The Young Philadelphians wasn't hugely acclaimed, but it did pick up three
00:26nominations at the 1960 Academy Awards, Best Black and White Costume Design for Howard Shoup,
00:33Best Black and White Cinematography for Harry Stradling Jr., and Best Supporting Actor for
00:38Robert Vaughan. He didn't win, but this was just one of Vaughan's many memorable performances
00:44throughout his career, which included Lee in The Magnificent Seven, The Senator in Bullet,
00:49and Napoleon Solo in The Man from Uncle on Television, among others.
