00:08Hello, I'm Dave Karger.
00:09Thanks for joining me tonight on TCM as we continue our tribute to Richard Chamberlain.
00:14After an early start studying painting and art history and serving in the U.S. Army,
00:18Chamberlain found his way to professional acting in the late 1950s.
00:22One of his first jobs was a guest appearance on an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents.
00:28Raymond Massey played his father, and before long, the two actors were playing colleagues
00:32on another hit TV series, Dr. Kildare, a medical drama based on the popular film series from MGM
00:38that had starred Lou Ayers in the 1930s and 40s.
00:41Chamberlain won a Golden Globe for playing the title role on Dr. Kildare,
00:45and up next is a film MGM produced to capitalize on his popularity as a television heartthrob.
00:51From 1965, co-starring Yvette Mimieux, it's Joy in the Morning.
00:55Mimieux plays a poor young woman who runs away from home to marry the man she loves,
01:00a wealthy college boy played by Richard Chamberlain.
01:03But their life as newlyweds is complicated from the start by a whole host of factors,
01:08including family disapproval, financial struggles, and intimacy issues.
01:12The film was based on a novel by Betty Smith, the author of the 1943 bestseller A Tree Grows
01:18in Brooklyn, and it was adapted for the screen by a team of writers, including Sally Benson,
01:24whose memoirs formed the basis for the 1944 MGM musical Meet Me in St. Louis.
01:29MGM planned Joy in the Morning as a vehicle for Richard Chamberlain and Yvette Mimieux,
01:34teaming them up for the second time after they had worked together in a memorable episode of Dr. Kildare,
01:40which earned Mimieux a Golden Globe nomination.
01:43From 1965, directed by Alex Siegel, also with Arthur Kennedy and Oscar Homolka,
01:49here is Joy in the Morning.
