00:04Hello and happy Father's Day from all of us here at TCM.
00:08I'm Jacqueline Stewart coming to you from the University of Chicago's beautiful Ida Noyes Hall.
00:14Thanks for joining me here on Silent Sunday Nights.
00:17Tonight we're celebrating Father's Day with a double feature,
00:20two classic silent comedies from Charlie Chaplin that feature relationships between fathers and children.
00:26Later on, we'll have Chaplin's 1928 comedy, The Circus.
00:31But Up First is a film he made at the beginning of the decade,
00:34and it became the first feature film of his career.
00:37From 1921, he stars opposite Jackie Coogan in The Kid.
00:42As the opening title warns us up front, this is a picture with a smile and perhaps a tear.
00:50There are plenty of comic gags,
00:51but the kid also introduced audiences to a more sentimental side of Charlie Chaplin.
00:57He plays his famous little tramp character
00:59and becomes an unlikely father when he discovers an abandoned infant.
01:04With no one else to care for the child, the tramp takes on the role,
01:08and as the little boy grows, he and his surrogate father become inseparable companions.
01:13From the time he began planning this film,
01:15Chaplin had only one actor in mind to play the title role,
01:19six-year-old Jackie Coogan.
01:20He had seen Coogan perform in a vaudeville show with his father, Jack Coogan Sr.,
01:26and was captivated by the boy's charisma and talent.
01:28The chemistry he shared with Jackie Coogan on screen was genuine.
01:32The two got along beautifully during production, and they remained lifelong friends.
01:37The film was a significant gamble for Chaplin and his most ambitious project to date.
01:43The risk paid off, and Chaplin's debut feature was a resounding success.
01:47From 1921, also featuring an uncredited Jack Coogan Sr.,
01:52and co-starring Edna Purviance, this is The Kid,
01:56followed by Chaplin's 1928 comedy, The Circus.
