00:00Hello and welcome to Bargain Hunt from Somerset.
00:04The weird.
00:05The wacky.
00:07The wonderful.
00:10All par for the course in the world of antiques.
00:13But I can definitely say I've never seen anything like this before.
00:17Now, it's quite a large size, it's quite weighty and it's embossed to both sides.
00:22But what is it? All will be revealed later.
00:25But first, let's go bargain hunting!
00:50Today's teams will be shopping at this antiques fair at Shepton Mallet.
00:54With hundreds of stalls, they'll be spoilt for choice.
00:57Each of our teams will have £300 and just one hour to find three items to take to auction.
01:03One must cost at least £75 and then of course, there's my challenge to consider.
01:09The winning team is the one that makes the biggest profit or smallest loss at auction.
01:14Let's meet today's teams.
01:17I'm Claire.
01:18I'm Phil.
01:18I bring rhythm.
01:19I bring the speed.
01:21And blues, we're going to take the lead.
01:23Mmm, how did you two meet?
01:25We met on the bus on the way to college about ten years ago.
01:28What's the team dynamic?
01:30Claire's a bit louder.
01:31Yeah.
01:32She's a bit more cautious.
01:34Are you competitive?
01:36I'm quietly competitive.
01:38Oh, I'm obviously competitive.
01:40Yeah, it's very out there.
01:41Is there a game plan?
01:43We're going to spend all the money and make a profit.
01:46Oh, but don't forget you're expert though.
01:49I've seen them do a good job on a fiver.
01:51We'll give them a challenge.
01:53Yeah.
01:53I like it.
01:54Let's see who you're up against.
01:57Hi, I'm Beej.
01:58I'm Dan.
01:59I'm going to be taking care of the haggling.
02:01And I'm going to keep a hold of the purse strings.
02:02And how long have you been friends?
02:04We met at university, didn't we?
02:06Yeah, about ten years ago now.
02:07What will you be looking for today?
02:09I think things with purpose.
02:10Yeah.
02:10Things that people could buy and actually use.
02:12And a bit of jewellery though as well.
02:13Yeah, exactly.
02:15Any tactics?
02:16We need to go with our gut.
02:17And lean on the expert.
02:19Always.
02:20Who's in charge?
02:21It's going to be you.
02:22It is going to be you.
02:23I think so.
02:24Yeah.
02:25No pressure, Dan.
02:26We'd better get going then.
02:28Hello team!
02:29Hello!
02:31Oh my goodness, well this is exciting, isn't it?
02:33Very exciting.
02:34Yeah, I like this.
02:35So, what is the first thing you're going to need to go bargain hunting today, teams?
02:38Money!
02:39Money, you're absolutely right.
02:41Now, who is the responsible friend over here that's going to have the money?
02:44Phil's the responsible friend.
02:45Phil, there we go Phil.
02:46Thank you.
02:47There is your £300.
02:48Dan the man, there we go.
02:49I'll look after it.
02:50Now, you'll also need one of my challenges.
02:52Okay, who's up for the challenge on the reds?
02:54Claire is up for the challenge.
02:55Claire, there we go Claire.
02:56Thank you.
02:56And what about on the blues?
02:57I'll let Beej have the honour.
02:58Beej, there we go.
02:59There is your challenge.
03:00Now, what is the final thing you're going to need to go bargain hunting today?
03:05An expert!
03:06Expert, you're absolutely right now.
03:07We've got two cracking experts for you today.
03:09Are you ready?
03:10Yes!
03:11Okay, off you go teams.
03:13Enjoy!
03:14But what are they looking for in their expert?
03:18Someone who's up for a laugh.
03:21Somebody who's patient.
03:23Someone who's efficient.
03:25Somebody that's knowledgeable.
03:28Someone who's going to find us a profit.
03:29Well, you've got me.
03:33Surprising the reds, it's Ben Cooper.
03:36Well, never mind the knowledge.
03:38We'll just have fun.
03:39How about that, yes?
03:40And for the blues, it's Danny Sebastian.
03:44How are you both?
03:44Time to reveal those challenges.
03:47An item with a musical connection.
03:52A piece of decorative glassware.
03:56Okay teams, are you ready to hit the stalls?
03:58Your time starts now.
04:02Well and truly raring to go.
04:04Where are we going?
04:05Where are we going?
04:07Keep up, Ben.
04:10The blues are straight in with something for my challenge.
04:14What have you seen, Dan?
04:16I don't know.
04:16It looks like some sort of...
04:18Is it like a perfume bottle?
04:20A perfume bottle, maybe?
04:22Silver topped.
04:23Silver topped.
04:24Nice little bar stopper.
04:25Nice little bar stopper.
04:26Very nice.
04:26Any scratches on it or anything?
04:28Looks all right.
04:29145.
04:30It's a little bit rich, isn't it?
04:31It's pricey.
04:33Oh, her little top end.
04:35The reds are laying down the law straight away.
04:37We want all our items to be quite big.
04:40Physically big?
04:41No.
04:42Expensive.
04:43Expensive.
04:43Expensive.
04:44Right.
04:45And then we want good quality things that we both love.
04:48But it's also going to make us money.
04:50Well, good luck with that.
04:52The blues are looking at something practical.
04:55Um, these are like little fruit knives.
04:58They're quite nice.
04:59That's Mother of Pearl, the handles.
05:01Okay, cool.
05:01Would you say they're quite collectible?
05:03Oh, definitely.
05:03People do love a fruit knife.
05:05Okay.
05:05No damage at all on the Mother of Pearl.
05:07Yeah, nice decoration.
05:08Something for £20.
05:09Yeah.
05:10But it's just...
05:11It is a little bit loose, so the blade is quite loose.
05:14Ah, okay, yeah.
05:14I think...
05:16Keep looking.
05:16Keep looking.
05:17Yeah, let's go.
05:18So the knife doesn't quite cut it.
05:20The Reds are looking at some novelty silver.
05:24I like the wheelbarrow.
05:26There are collectors of all kinds of bits of silver.
05:28There are people who collect novelty items.
05:30I mean, that's just a novelty piece.
05:33It's actually got quite a bit of weight to it.
05:36On the side, you've got your really clear hallmarks.
05:40Mm-hmm.
05:40British silver.
05:42I like that the wheel works.
05:43It's a working miniature thing.
05:45It's cool, I like it.
05:46It is.
05:46It's a really nice thing.
05:47I think it would be interesting to hear a ballpark figure for it.
05:51The wheelbarrow is £200.
05:52£200.
05:53What would be your absolute best on this?
05:57Really, the very best I can do is £170.
06:00£170.
06:00Oh, I know you could do better than that.
06:02Come on.
06:03I can't, I'm afraid.
06:04But maybe we should hold this as a potential.
06:08Well, the thing is, we've just started.
06:10Let me plonk it back for the moment.
06:12You know it's here, team.
06:15Ooh, hello.
06:16Now, that would fit my decorative glassware challenge.
06:19That's quite nice, that is.
06:21Yeah, I like that.
06:22Sort of like a handkerchief vase, isn't it?
06:24Is it glass blown, would you say?
06:25Sure.
06:26Well, it's quite smooth, to be honest.
06:28Yeah.
06:29You can normally get a piece that's quite rough on the base of it.
06:32Yeah.
06:32Called the Pontil.
06:33Yeah.
06:34Which is where they snap it off once they've hand blown it.
06:381970s, nice coloured glass.
06:39It is a nice statement piece.
06:41You know, in someone's home.
06:41Did it say Murano?
06:43Possibly, I think it says possibly Murano.
06:45Yeah, possibly.
06:46With a character.
06:46You priced it at £48.
06:47What would be your best price?
06:50A very definite would be £30.
06:51A very definite would be £30.
06:53Would you do £28?
06:55Yeah.
06:55Oh, thank you.
06:56Shake his hand.
06:57Thank you, sir.
06:58Shining work team, this ruby red glass vase for £28 kicks off your shop and meets my challenge
07:04of an item of decorative glassware perfectly.
07:08So, we've had ten minutes, only ten minutes, we've ticked off the challenge.
07:12Yeah.
07:12I think we're cooking with gas.
07:14Yeah, you could be right, Danny.
07:16Speaking of time...
07:19I know sometimes watches can be very valuable.
07:22A pocket watch would go into either a top pocket or a waist clip pocket.
07:25Yeah.
07:26I like that retro one.
07:27It's actually made by Smiths.
07:29Smiths made station clocks.
07:31They were well known for school clocks and everywhere.
07:33They're a really well known name.
07:34Yeah.
07:35It's made of a sort of plastic.
07:37Yeah.
07:37It's again, it's a bit of a novelty thing.
07:39I do quite like that.
07:40It's only £38.
07:42Phil.
07:43Okay.
07:43Why don't you at least go and ask the lady what her very best price could be on it?
07:47Yeah.
07:48Okay.
07:48You got this.
07:49You got it.
07:50So, have you ever seen Phil haggle and negotiate prices before?
07:55No.
07:56Do you think she'll be good at it?
07:57No.
07:58Why?
07:58No, she will be brilliant.
08:00I think that's a vote of confidence.
08:02How did you get on, Phil?
08:05He said the best would be £25.
08:07I actually don't think that's too bad.
08:09Would you like to get something under your belt?
08:10Should we just do it?
08:11Yeah, do it.
08:12Good work, team.
08:13You're off the mark with this vintage rally stopwatch for £25.
08:18That's our first item bought.
08:19Are you feeling a bit more relaxed now?
08:20We've got it.
08:21Yeah.
08:21Yeah, we're getting in the swing of things.
08:22Proud of you.
08:23Good price drop.
08:24Aww.
08:26Proud of you, Ben.
08:26We'll just have a middle group.
08:29Now, this looks interesting, Blues.
08:31It's a very weighty clock, brass clock.
08:34An alarm clock, maybe, even, with the top.
08:37I'm not sure about an alarm clock.
08:39There doesn't seem any sort of connection to the top.
08:42No.
08:42It just seems like...
08:43It's just got like a dome, hasn't it?
08:44Yeah, it just seems like it's got a dome top.
08:46Made in France.
08:48It's definitely a mantel clock.
08:50Yeah.
08:51£95.
08:52What do you think about brass?
08:54Brass, you know, people don't like to clean it.
08:56No.
08:57That's the thing.
08:57It comes with hard work.
08:59It needs to be polished.
09:00And I think it'll be quite difficult to polish, I think, with the design.
09:03Yeah.
09:03It's quite intricate, isn't it?
09:05Yeah.
09:05Not speaking to you.
09:06It's not shouting out at me, to be honest.
09:09Let's keep looking.
09:10Tick tock.
09:11Leave the clock, then.
09:13And from brass clocks to brass instruments.
09:16Claire's trying her luck with a bugle.
09:18It's made in England.
09:20Yep.
09:20Go on, Claire.
09:21Go on.
09:21Give it a blow.
09:24Okay.
09:24I think it will meet our challenge.
09:27Yeah.
09:27Okay.
09:27Without a problem.
09:28You know, it doesn't want to be a lot of money.
09:30Hopefully it's not a lot of money.
09:31What is the maximum price that you, as an expert, would be willing to spend on that?
09:3520 quiddish, something like that.
09:37See what he says.
09:38Mm-hmm.
09:38I think it's your turn, Claire.
09:40You're the musician.
09:41Go and work your magic, Claire.
09:42Yeah.
09:43Do you reckon that Claire's a good hagler?
09:45I don't think anyone can say no to Claire.
09:48She's quite...
09:49She is.
09:50She's quite...
09:51So, how did you get on?
09:54So, he said between 30 to 40.
09:57So, you didn't give a concrete price?
09:58No, but I've managed to take it down to 25.
10:00Okey-doke.
10:01So, if we've talked about the wheelbarrow and we've talked about...
10:04The bugle.
10:05The bugle.
10:06We could pin both, look outside and then come back.
10:10Okey-doke.
10:11Sounds like a plan.
10:14Over with the blues, Beej is drawn to a lamp.
10:19I think that's pretty cool.
10:20It's quite different.
10:22Well, this is kind of like a mock or a cheap marble, if you would.
10:26Oh, right.
10:27Of course I like it.
10:29Well, I mean, if it was marble, it'd be ultra-heavy.
10:31Yes.
10:31It'd probably be ultra-expensive as well.
10:33Right, okay, okay.
10:33When you think of it being turned and shaped and all the rest of it into marble.
10:37Nice enough.
10:37You don't sound like...
10:38Not convinced.
10:39No.
10:39Well, let's get a price.
10:40Okay.
10:42That one is 45.
10:44What would be the best?
10:4535.
10:45From my style.
10:4635.
10:4735.
10:48Okay.
10:49Could we have that as maybe an option?
10:51Yes.
10:52Diplomatic as ever, Dan.
10:54Ben's working on keeping the Reds focused.
10:58Where's your brain at the moment?
11:00A very good question.
11:03Bit stressed.
11:03It's everywhere at the moment.
11:05Bit stressed.
11:05What about a horse on wheels?
11:09I don't think it's actually that old or an item.
11:13It's a decorative item.
11:14Okay.
11:15295 on this one.
11:17I mean, you said spend big, but quite frankly, that's taking the tittle.
11:21Ben's reining the girls in.
11:23Over with the blues, Beej has got her jewellery wish with a brooch.
11:27Quite sweet really.
11:29So it's 10 carat gold with a garnet little stuff.
11:32I mean, it's nice.
11:32What do you think?
11:33Do you like that?
11:34I do really like it.
11:35I think it's quite sweet.
11:36I think sometimes you've got to go with your heart.
11:38Yeah.
11:39What's the price on it?
11:41105.
11:41105.
11:42What would be your best price on that?
11:44For us.
11:45Be nice for us.
11:4679 and no less.
11:48I'd take a punt at 75.
11:50No.
11:52How about 76?
11:53Go on then.
11:54Yay!
11:55Shall we do it?
11:56Let's do it.
11:57Let's do it.
11:58Thank you.
11:59Good work team.
12:00This Art Deco gold bar brooch is your second buy and at 76 pounds meets your big spend.
12:08So we've got the big spend, we've got the challenge.
12:11The challenge done.
12:12Just got to get something now that you both love.
12:13One more.
12:14Are you ready?
12:15Yeah.
12:15Come on let's go.
12:16Well done.
12:17Now remember that mystery item?
12:19It's time to reveal what it is.
12:21Let's take a look.
12:23It's quite sizeable, sort of slightly A4 type shaped.
12:27On this side it's got this really rather intricate and beautiful scene of a temple here with these
12:34trees growing either side.
12:36At the bottom we have some script here and at the top we've got these 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
12:42stars.
12:44And then if we turn it over on the other side we've got this sort of compartmented design with this
12:50repeating geometric pattern.
12:53Any ideas?
12:54Well let's see what the people of this fair think.
12:58The back reminds me of something you might move counters along or...
13:01Like a chess board.
13:02Kind of.
13:03Is wood a tile?
13:06Maybe like an ornament?
13:09Some sort of oriental game.
13:13Some sort of printing block.
13:15Press wood is it or press bamboo?
13:18Pour and making cookies or something like that.
13:22Making shortbread.
13:23It's almost compressed.
13:25Oh you're getting there. Compressed.
13:27Tea.
13:29Tea leaves is it? Compressed tea leaves.
13:32It makes tea in like tiles and then you just scrape.
13:35Is it tea?
13:37You've gone very quiet.
13:40He's reading it.
13:41Oh what is it?
13:42It's like a tea company.
13:44I think it's a tea, tea brick.
13:46You're absolutely right.
13:48You go straight to the top of the class.
13:50Very well done.
13:50Just lucky I'm Chinese.
13:53It is in fact what we know as a tea brick.
13:55Basically compressed tea leaves.
13:57They used to use it to transport it from China to the UK so that it didn't take up as
14:02much space so that it would keep the moisture in it.
14:05Oh wow.
14:06So you'd scrape it off and get your tea.
14:08Goodness me.
14:09So why so ornate?
14:11Because they just did things nicely back then.
14:14Do I get a prize?
14:14Well you get to meet me but that's probably not a prize.
14:21I'm quite thirsty after all of that.
14:23I could do with a cup of tea myself.
14:25Let's give this a go.
14:26We all love a good cuppa.
14:28It's our national drink and we consume around 100 million cups a day.
14:34Tea originated in China and came over to Britain in the 1600s.
14:39In the 19th century Britain began importing tea from her territories overseas, particularly the Assam and Darjeeling regions of India,
14:47meaning less reliance on Chinese tea imports.
14:50But that was still a few thousand miles away from home soil, which is where our mystery item, our tea
14:57brick, came into play.
14:59Made by steaming dried tea leaves, the moist tea mixture would then be compressed into a metal or wooden mould
15:06to create a brick like this one.
15:08These moulds often had a decorative pattern on them just like this one here and this script here identifies exactly
15:14where it was produced.
15:16They were then left to dry and harden so they didn't go mouldy and after that they could be easily
15:21transported.
15:22When they reached their final destination, the idea was to break or shave off a chunk from the brick to
15:29create loose tea.
15:30Let's give it a go, shall we?
15:32Now, this tea brick dates from around the 1920s or 30s, so I'm not holding out a lot of hope.
15:38But let's scrape some of the tea off into there, into my cup.
15:43Gosh, it's very solid. Very, very solid.
15:50And let's pop some water on it, some hot water and see what happens.
16:00Oh, it's definitely changing colour.
16:03Definitely looking a bit tea-like.
16:05Let's swill it round.
16:06Oh, yeah, it is.
16:06Look at that.
16:08Let's give it a smell, see if it actually smells of tea.
16:14Yeah, it does.
16:15Goodness me.
16:17Yeah.
16:18Well, it is over a hundred years old, so I'm not entirely sure I fancy tasting it, but it certainly
16:23smells like tea and it's still doing its thing.
16:27Tea bricks have been used for more than a thousand years in some parts of Asia and even Russia, but
16:33as well as creating a hot drink, they had another fascinating use.
16:37They were traded as a form of currency.
16:40In many remote areas, especially mountain regions, metal coins were very scarce.
16:45So sections of tea bricks like this were broken off and traded in exchange for goods and services.
16:51So what's something like this worth? Well, this is a 1920s or 30s example and could set you back around
16:58£60, but they're still made today and cost around £20.
17:04Right, it's time to see if there are any good deals brewing with our teams back out at the fair.
17:10We're just over halfway and the Blues need one more item, but the Reds still need their big spend and
17:17challenge.
17:19It means we've got connection, connect, connect.
17:22What's that? Is that a radio though?
17:25That looks like a radio. It's going to have a look. It's quite a kitsch thing. It even tells me
17:31it's a radio alarm clock.
17:32It's not an old item and it does have £95 on it. Too much for what it is.
17:40Hmm, not quite on your wavelength there. Better leave it.
17:45What's Beej spotted over with the Blues?
17:48An alloy or silver plated little box.
17:50OK.
17:51Probably got a bit of age to it.
17:53I mean, it'd be great as a little trinket box or maybe even a card box, something like that.
17:58How much is it on foot? 20?
18:00If there's a little bit knocked off, you probably will get a profit.
18:03Yeah.
18:04But it just depends whether you want, you know, whether you want to sort of smash it or whether you
18:08just want to stroll.
18:09We want to smash it.
18:10You want to smash it.
18:11Yeah, come on.
18:12That's their spirit, Beej.
18:15The Reds are also looking at something that would fit my challenge nicely.
18:19So it's like a music box. You can just see on the edge there are all these teeth, which are
18:23all the different notes.
18:25Wow.
18:26What is that?
18:27Music.
18:28Music.
18:29You've got it all quiet and melancholy.
18:33Yeah, because it's just so sweet and I just, like, it brings out like a little girl inside.
18:39It's just, there's something about it that I fell in love with. I'm not sure whether it's...
18:42And it's quite fun because it's got lots of different other discs to play.
18:46There's no price on it.
18:47OK.
18:48Let me ask, shall I go and ask the dealer?
18:50Yeah.
18:50You can discuss it between yourselves whether you, how much you like it.
18:53Yeah.
18:54And what kind of money you think you'd like to pay and I'll find out what it is.
18:57Great, thank you.
18:58Do you like it?
18:59I do.
19:00Price?
19:01Depends.
19:02If it's a good price, let's do it.
19:04No pressure then, Ben.
19:07He said 265 is what he's got on it.
19:09He did say, yes, it's the end of the fair, he'll do a deal, but I can't see it doing
19:13that at auction.
19:14No.
19:14No.
19:15Well, that can go.
19:16Alright.
19:17Relax.
19:18No messing here then.
19:19The music box is a definite no.
19:22Meanwhile, Dan's unearthed some ancient treasures.
19:26So it's a Mayan 16th century terracotta mould.
19:30Quite unusual.
19:31Quite interesting.
19:32Yeah.
19:33Totem, maybe a kind of god figure?
19:36I'm not sure.
19:37Does that mean 16th century?
19:39Quite niche really.
19:4140 pounds.
19:42Mmm.
19:42Would you look at that if it was at auction?
19:44Probably not.
19:46I think we can do a little bit better than that, to be honest.
19:51Fair enough team.
19:52With less than 20 minutes to go, the Blues still need that final buy.
19:56Whilst the Reds need both their big spend and challenge item.
20:01Time is beginning to really take.
20:03Okay.
20:03We've got to keep an eye out.
20:06What about this?
20:07Is that a clarinet?
20:08That's a good spot.
20:09There's a clarinet.
20:09Made by Boozy and Hawks.
20:11You can see the B and H. It's in its case.
20:13I would have thought it's probably a 1970s one.
20:17What about the trumpet next?
20:19The trumpet?
20:21Corton.
20:22C-O-R-T-O-N.
20:25So the valves need a bit of oiling.
20:28So there's no price on either of them.
20:31Time is short.
20:32Yep.
20:33I'm now just going to pop and see the dealer.
20:36While Ben gets a price, Phil and Claire get down to brass tacks.
20:40I would say no to the clarinet.
20:42Yeah, clarinet's quite ugly.
20:43That has more value for money.
20:45It's just it looks prettier, so I'm more attracted towards it.
20:48Yeah, I agree.
20:48He said he would do £25 each.
20:52That's the same as the bugle, and I prefer that to the bugle.
20:55I think this is much better than bugle.
20:58Yeah.
20:58Because, I mean, a new trumpet...
21:00Yeah, exactly.
21:01...is hundreds of pounds.
21:02Yeah, exactly.
21:02It's a bit bashed, but it'll still work.
21:04Trumpet.
21:05Trumpet.
21:05£25.
21:06Bargain.
21:07Yeah, people.
21:07Absolutely.
21:09Sterling work team, you've ticked off my challenge of an item with a musical connection
21:13with this brass trumpet for £25.
21:17So, big spend.
21:19We've got about, I would say, 14 minutes left.
21:22I say wheelbarrow.
21:23Yes.
21:24I just think it's fun.
21:25And let's hurry because I'm scared that they're going to go.
21:27Hurry, off we go.
21:28Let's go.
21:30Decision made.
21:31An Art Deco lamp is leading the way over with the Blues.
21:36That's nice, isn't it?
21:37That is a very nice lamp.
21:39It's kind of got that Art Deco feel to it, but it's sort of 1960s.
21:43Bit of a mushroom lamp.
21:45Yeah.
21:45That retro mid-century feel.
21:47Yeah.
21:47Quite in vogue.
21:49It is nice.
21:51Bit of tarnish.
21:52Well, I think sometimes...
21:54Adds a bit of character.
21:55Exactly.
21:55So, it's priced at £120.
21:59Hmm.
22:00I mean, what would be your best on that?
22:02Yeah.
22:0290 quid.
22:03Top lowest.
22:05OK.
22:05That's good to know.
22:06Thank you.
22:07You haven't got long though, team, remember?
22:10The Reds are going back for the wheelbarrow.
22:12Go, go, go, go.
22:13OK.
22:14They're racing to get there.
22:16Let's hope it hasn't sold.
22:19So...
22:19I think you mentioned 200 last time.
22:23That was our starting price.
22:24Are you willing to go down to 160?
22:27I can, yeah.
22:29It's the end of the day, sir.
22:30Yeah.
22:30I'm happy.
22:31All right, pleasure.
22:31Shake his head.
22:32Thank you very much.
22:34That's you done, Reds.
22:35This novelty silver wheelbarrow for £160
22:38meets your big spend and completes your shop.
22:43Time to relax?
22:44Touch it.
22:45Come on, off you go.
22:45Let's go.
22:45Let's go.
22:46You're into your final few minutes here, Blues.
22:49What are you thinking?
22:50I mean, I do like that lamp.
22:51I do like that lamp.
22:52So unless we find anything better than that,
22:54we've got to beat that.
22:56OK.
22:56But you haven't got long.
22:58Now, these look interesting.
23:00Are they cocktail sticks?
23:01It looks like it.
23:02I quite like them.
23:04They're pretty cool, aren't they?
23:05I've got several different sets.
23:08Three to pick from.
23:09Better get a closer look.
23:10Be quick, though.
23:12I kind of like these ones because they're such a beautiful, prominent mark on the back.
23:18You know, very easy to read and they're all silver.
23:22Yes.
23:22We have two minutes.
23:24Oh, no.
23:24I'm starting to sweat.
23:26Could I just check what were the prices on these?
23:28The lowest on those, I will do 95 on that and that really is me finished.
23:33Yeah.
23:34What do you think?
23:35Do you definitely want these or could you do the lamp?
23:38What do you think?
23:39I don't know.
23:40So, your options are the cocktail sticks for £95 or the Art Deco lamp for £90.
23:47What do you think, Danny?
23:49I'm a bit bamboozled by it all now.
23:51Well, somebody needs to make a decision and quickly.
23:54Just 45 seconds left.
23:56I'm putting the clock up.
23:58I feel like I did the brooch so I feel like you made a decision on this one.
24:01I mean, I personally prefer these.
24:04Okay.
24:04These are quite unusual items compared to a lamp which is a little bit more everyday.
24:09Can you do 94 just in case it goes up in increments of five?
24:13No, I really can't.
24:14That's it, isn't it?
24:15Yeah.
24:16Okay.
24:1694?
24:1795.
24:18No, 95 I have to stick with.
24:2095 you've got to stick with.
24:21Okay.
24:2120 seconds.
24:23Someone really needs to close the deal here or you'll run out of time.
24:27Are you going to go for it?
24:28Yeah, I think we're going for it.
24:28Do you think that?
24:29Do you agree?
24:29I think they're quite nice.
24:30Okay.
24:31Yeah.
24:31I don't want quite nice.
24:32Are we going for it?
24:33No, yeah, let's go for it.
24:34Okay.
24:35Thank you very much.
24:37Wow, team.
24:38With six seconds to go, that's your final buy in the bag.
24:42Six silver cockerel cocktail sticks for £95.
24:47And relax.
24:50That's it, teams.
24:51Your shopping is over.
24:52We've done all right, haven't we?
24:54Yeah, you've made my heart race, but let's go and get something to eat.
24:58Let's get out of here.
25:00Let's remind ourselves what the red team bought.
25:03They got out of the blocks with a mid-century stopwatch for £25.
25:10They're hoping to blow away the opposition with a Corton brass trumpet.
25:14At £25, it met my challenge of an item with a musical connection.
25:20And they spent big on a 19th century silver wheelbarrow for £160, rounding off their shop.
25:29Clare and Phil, how was that?
25:31Amazing.
25:32Yeah, it was brilliant.
25:32It looked like a lot of fun.
25:34It was.
25:35A lot of fun.
25:35And Ben, what were they like to shop?
25:36I mean, they've been friends for a while now, haven't they?
25:38They were so much fun.
25:39So very in sync, hopefully.
25:41Yeah, and quick.
25:41Oh, how was that for you?
25:43I moved slower.
25:47Now, tell me, out of the three items, which one would you take home, Clare?
25:52The silver wheelbarrow.
25:53It's beautiful.
25:54It is, yeah.
25:55I like it.
25:56Really pretty.
25:56What about you, Phil?
25:57What was your favourite piece that you purchased?
25:59The little silver wheelbarrow.
26:00I fell in love with it as soon as I knew it had a wheel.
26:03Aww.
26:03Love at first sight.
26:04She's got wheelbarrow love hearts in her eyes.
26:09Now tell me, what do you think of the three items that you've purchased
26:11that are going to make you the most profit, Clare?
26:12I actually think it's going to be the instrument, the trumpet,
26:16because we got it at a good price.
26:18So with the right to buy on auction day, we could maybe make a good profit out of it.
26:23What about you, Phil?
26:24What do you think is going to make you the most money?
26:26I think someone else is going to fall in love with the wheelbarrow too.
26:29It's going to fly away.
26:32Okay.
26:32What did you spend in total, team?
26:35£210.
26:36So that means one of you's got £90 to hand over to Ben.
26:39Well done, Phil.
26:40There we go. £90, Ben.
26:42What are you going to spend that on?
26:44Well, one thing that's been drummed into me is profit.
26:47Yes!
26:48So I'm going to hunt for something with a good profit.
26:50So while Ben goes to go and discover something with a guaranteed profit,
26:53hopefully, let's remind ourselves what the blue team bought.
26:57To meet my decorative glassware challenge, they poured £28 into this 1970s ruby red Italian handkerchief vase.
27:06They're hoping to pin down a profit with an Art Deco gold bar brooch for £76, meeting their big spend.
27:14And with seconds to go, a set of six cockcrawled cocktail sticks for £95 completed their shop.
27:22Dan, Bede and Danny, that looked like a lot of fun.
27:25Yeah, brilliant fun.
27:26I mean, you did run out of time slightly, didn't you?
27:28We did always. We were to the wire.
27:30Well, you knew what we were doing.
27:31Now, tell me, out of your three rather wonderful purchases, what was your favourite, Dan?
27:36My favourite was the silver cocktail sticks.
27:38They're just a really interesting piece.
27:40I think cocktail memorabilia is quite popular at the minute.
27:43Something that I would like to own myself.
27:44So, yeah, that's why I like them.
27:45Okay. All right.
27:46What about you, Bede? What was your favourite?
27:47My favourite was the brooch.
27:49A hundred percent.
27:50I just loved how delicate it was.
27:52Yes.
27:52And it was shiny and pretty.
27:55And what about profit?
27:55What's going to make you the most money out of those three purchases?
27:58I think out of the three we bought, the vase, I think, will make us the most profit.
28:02Good. Okay.
28:02What about you, Bede?
28:04What's going to make you the most money?
28:05I'm going to say the brooch again.
28:06Oh, she's sticking with the brooch.
28:08Yeah, I'm staying with the brooch.
28:09I just really like it.
28:10I do appreciate the vase, though.
28:12I think, like, it was a good buy.
28:13Like, we got it for, like, quite a good amount of money.
28:16But I'm staying with the brooch.
28:17You're sticking with the brooch.
28:18Okay, fair enough.
28:19What did you spend in total, team?
28:21A hundred and ninety-nine pounds.
28:22A hundred and ninety-nine pounds.
28:24So that means you're leaving Danny with a hundred and one pounds of leftover lolly.
28:28Can you hand it over to him, please, Dan?
28:30Do us proud, Danny.
28:31Lovely.
28:31Thank you very much.
28:32Do us proud, exactly.
28:34What are you going to spend that on, Danny?
28:35What I've got in mind is definitely going to cut the mustard.
28:38Well, while Danny goes bonus by shopping, let's head over to the auction.
28:45And today we've come to Chippenham.
28:48It is an absolute joy and a pleasure to be here with Tim Weeks.
28:51Hello.
28:51Now, shall we start with our red team?
28:53Yes.
28:54So we've got Phil and Claire who went shopping with Ben Cooper.
28:57And the first item that they purchased, which actually I think I can hear ticking away in
29:01front of us, is this Smiths Motorsport Rally timer clock.
29:05What do we think of that?
29:06I love it because I love collector's items and I love that it's going to be those motorsport
29:12enthusiasts that are going to want this.
29:14You do see a fair few of them, but it's mid-century so it's got some nice age.
29:17I like the plastic casing.
29:18It's in good order.
29:18It works.
29:19What's your estimate?
29:20It's 25 to 40.
29:21Well, that's cool.
29:22£25 paid.
29:23That's a good buy.
29:23Now, their second purchase is the brass trumpet.
29:27And it was, of course, their challenge because I challenged them to find an item with a musical
29:30collection.
29:31Are they saleable today?
29:33Well, the right trumpet, yes.
29:35This one is a cordon, so it's marked.
29:37It's really nicely marked, actually, at the front.
29:39Now, it's more of a beginner's or an entry-level trumpet.
29:43I like the mother of pearl keys, so it's got some nice detailing, some nice quality in
29:47But really, it's the sort of trumpet that you do see fairly often come at auction.
29:52Estimate?
29:5320 to 30.
29:54£25 paid.
29:55Good.
29:55Now, their third and final item is, of course, the little silver wheelbarrow.
30:00I love it.
30:00I love novelty silver.
30:01It's one of my favourite items.
30:02Quite a substantial size as well, that wheelbarrow.
30:05There's a bit of meat on the bone there.
30:07London, 1888.
30:09I put 70 to 100.
30:11£160 paid.
30:12It was their big spend.
30:14I'm going to give it everything, because I love it.
30:15I really love it.
30:16OK.
30:17Let's move over to our blue team, Beej and Dan, who went shopping with Danny Sebastian.
30:23Now, the first item that they purchased was their challenge.
30:26Now, I challenged them to find a piece of decorative glassware.
30:29Ta-da!
30:30Yeah, absolutely.
30:31I like it.
30:32I'm into that sort of 70s era, as you know, and I like that ruby red.
30:36It's so vibrant and exciting.
30:38That handkerchief style of glass vase as well.
30:41It's in good condition.
30:43Surely that modern market is looking for items like this.
30:46So, I'm behind it.
30:47I like it.
30:47Good.
30:47It's got everything going for us.
30:48It really does.
30:49Yeah, good.
30:49We like that.
30:50So, what's your estimate?
30:51I've put 20 to 30.
30:52Oh, that's OK.
30:53£28 paid.
30:54Oh, that's OK.
30:54Good.
30:55Let's move on to their second item, that rather lovely little bar brooch in the box.
30:59Always lovely to have a box with a piece of jewellery, isn't it?
31:02Absolutely.
31:03Gives it a little bit more, doesn't it?
31:04Yeah.
31:04I think it pops.
31:06It's a nice item.
31:07It's nothing too special, but it's gold, mark 10k, which is probably where most of the value is going to
31:11come from.
31:12But you're right, having that case, and it's very nicely presented.
31:15I also like that that lining's a little bit wear and tear to it.
31:19I want that.
31:20Show me some age.
31:21It's a nice thing.
31:22What's that big spend?
31:24Oh, OK.
31:24As you would expect maybe with a piece of gold, what's it going to make in your sale room?
31:28Well, I've put 40 to 60.
31:30OK.
31:31£76 paid.
31:32That's not bad.
31:32So let's move on to their third and final item, which is these gorgeous little cocktail sticks or olive sticks
31:39or whatever.
31:40They're just gold.
31:40And again, in their box.
31:42In the case, I love silver enamel pieces.
31:45I love that it's all together.
31:46Great to have that cockerel theme as well.
31:48They're in great condition and it's all there.
31:51What do you think they're going to make?
31:52Well, I put 60 to 100.
31:53They spent £95 on.
31:55OK.
31:56Good chance.
31:56So, it's going to be a tricky one to call.
31:59This could be tight.
32:00I'm going with reds.
32:03I'm straight in at 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85 in the room.
32:09My gavel is raised and the hammer comes down.
32:13Phil and Claire, are you ready?
32:14We are.
32:15I think so.
32:16Have you been to an auction before?
32:17Never.
32:18Actually, it's my first one.
32:19And being auction regulars, we can sort of stride in and feel at home, can't we?
32:24But I imagine it must be quite intimidating if you've never been to an auction before.
32:28Both intimidating and very exciting, I think.
32:30Good.
32:30Your first purchase was, of course, your mid-20th century Smiths Motorsport Rally Timer Clock Stopwatch.
32:36You pay £25 for it.
32:38Very best of luck.
32:39Let's get it started on a profit, shall we?
32:41I'm straight in at 50.
32:43I look for 55.
32:44Oh, wow.
32:44You've doubled your money.
32:4555, 60.

32:49Good work, girls.
32:50It's £65 on the net.
32:5270, fair warning then.
32:53We all sure?
32:54All happy?
32:55I sell with you at 65 this time online.
32:58Seriously, good work.
32:59That's just sold for £65.
33:01That's a £40 profit on your first item.
33:04So, here comes your second lock.
33:05Your Corton Brass Trumpet.
33:07You paid £25.
33:09This was, of course, my challenge as well.
33:11Here it comes.
33:12I can start at 14, 16, 18, 20.
33:17I need 22.
33:1922.
33:2024.
33:2026.
33:22It's profit.
33:23You've got a profit.
33:2431.
33:2528 in front.
33:2630.
33:2632.
33:2734.
33:29Nope.
33:29It's a room bid of £32.
33:32Looking for 34, are we all sure?
33:3434.
33:3536.
33:3638.
33:3740.
33:3842.
33:3944.
33:4046.
33:4148.
33:4346 in the very front.
33:4548, fair warning are we all sure?
33:4748, back in.
33:4850.
33:4955.
33:50It's 50 here then, right in front of me, dead centre.
33:53And I sell in the room at £50.
33:55So, that's just sold for £50.
33:57You doubled your money.
33:58You've made £25.
33:59So, that is two straight profits on the trot.
34:02If this lovely wheelbarrow makes a profit, you've got a golden gavel, okay?
34:06We've got a chance.
34:07You paid £160 for it.
34:09It was your big spend.
34:10Ooh, the pressure's on.
34:11It's all about the wheelbarrow, okay?
34:13Start me at just £100.
34:15Where's £100?
34:17What do we want to start then?
34:18£70 and away?
34:20£70 I've got online.
34:21£75?
34:22£80.
34:23£85?
34:24£90.
34:25£95?
34:26£100.
34:26£110?
34:27Thank you.
34:28£100 sat down.
34:29We assure then there's no screens lighting up and I will sell Gentsvid in my room this time at £100.
34:37Aw, girlies.
34:38It was all going so well.
34:39Sadly, the wheelbarrow's made £100.
34:41That's a £60 lot.
34:42But don't, never fear, we're still up by a fiver.
34:47Okay?
34:47So, we've still got money.
34:48All is not lost because you left Ben with some money, didn't you?
34:51The noise you can hear on the roof now is hail, okay?
34:54So, let's forget the heavens have opened, don't I?
34:57Yeah.
34:58Now, we left him with £90.
35:01Shall we find out what he did with it?
35:03I'd love to, yes.
35:04So, close your peepers just for a second.
35:05Ben, will you go and grab your bonus buy?
35:08Ben, are you ready to reveal?
35:10Yep.
35:10Okay, go.
35:11Ooh.
35:12What are they?
35:13So, they're a pair of 1940s silver and marquesite ear clips.
35:20They're stamped silver inside.
35:21Do you like silver?
35:22But they are really pretty, really wearable bits of jewellery.
35:26And I love the design because they're designed so well to go up the ear.
35:29You know, they're a really nice bit of sparkle.
35:32Very stylish.
35:33I think they're lovely and sparkly.
35:35I know we need some silver redemption.
35:37Yeah.
35:40How much did you pay for them?
35:4225.
35:42Really?
35:43Okay.
35:45And what do you think the profit on that might be?
35:48They should make a clear £10 profit.
35:50Okay.
35:51What are we going to do, girls?
35:52Absolutely go for it.
35:53Go for it.
35:54Why not?
35:54In for a penny, in for a pound.
35:56Why not?
35:56But let's see what our auctioneer, Tim, thinks of Ben's really beautiful earrings.
36:02I like them that they're kitsch because they're clip-on.
36:05And I think that makes it a little bit different, a little bit more exciting.
36:09They're marked silver as well.
36:11I think this is a shrewd bit of business, Mr Van Cooper.
36:13I like it.
36:1420 to 30.
36:16£25 paid.
36:17I think we're going to be all right.
36:19So auctioneer Tim has put an estimate of £20 to £30 on the earrings.

36:24Right, here they come.
36:25Start me £30.

36:46Gavel is raised.
36:47And I sell with you to the room at £30.
36:50Thank you.
36:53So they've just made a profit of £5 for you, Ben.
36:56Which added to your original £5, now means you've got £10.
37:00So very, very well done.
37:02That's a fiver each.
37:03That's great.
37:04Yeah.
37:05Even.
37:06Love it.
37:13Dan, Beej, how are we doing?
37:15Very excited.
37:16Bit nervous.
37:17Nervous?
37:17A little bit, yeah.
37:18But I'm looking forward to it.
