00:30We hope everybody's doing well.
00:32And now, if you don't mind, we're going to get to the news.
00:34Before signing an executive order today
00:37addressing women's health care,
00:39President Trump praised First Lady Melania Trump
00:41and said, quote,
00:42Melania works so hard, you wouldn't believe it.
00:45I don't know. I might believe it.
00:47I've certainly never seen her on the golf course.
00:51That's right. President Trump praised First Lady Melania Trump
00:54and said, quote,
00:55She's a very skilled person, actually.
00:58Oh, I know my wife loves it when I add actually
01:03at the end of a compliment.
01:05It's right up there with,
01:06You look tired and calm down.
01:10Katie Zakaria last week became the...
01:12Excuse me. Katie Zakaria last week
01:14became the shortest-tenured White House press secretary
01:17in history after being fired five days into the role.
01:35Five days! I mean, even the ring gives you seven.
01:40That's only four more days than Trump worked at McDonald's.
01:46The White House last week publicly called on U.S. Ambassador
01:49to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign
01:51amid reports that she asked a prominent Republican donor
01:54to pay her $100,000 American Express bill.
01:58And frankly, I just can't believe
01:59they charged her $50,000 per lip.
02:07The Justice Department last week
02:09rated Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar's
02:11Washington, D.C. home as part of an investigation
02:13into whether she fraudulently obtained
02:16U.S. citizenship decades ago.
02:18This has to be the furthest a president has ever gone
02:21to scare the crap out of his own wife.
02:26It doesn't matter how long ago it was.
02:30President Trump was presented recently
02:32with the National Medal of Science that was given
02:34to his uncle John G. Trump in 1983
02:37and then stood on stage holding the framed award.
02:40Okay, how many other people's awards
02:43is this man going to pose with?
02:46Every day, it's like, someone get my picture
02:48with Mr. Beast's Kid's Choice Award.
02:52In a poster over the weekend on social media,
02:55Kristi Noem shared a photograph of herself
02:57holding a hunting rifle with her dog, Foster.
03:00And this is sweet.
03:02She even gave him a head start.
03:13The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show was held yesterday
03:16in Los Angeles, and reality star Kylie Jenner
03:19wore this year's fantasy bra.
03:22I don't have a joke.
03:23I just need to prove that I Googled it for work.
03:31My wife is very understanding, actually.
03:39A Texas woman has filed a lawsuit
03:42against the chain Torchy's Tacos
03:44that claims she found a cow's tooth in her food.
03:48Yes, said an employee, a cow's tooth.
03:58That was my favorite one.
03:59I was trying not...
04:01I was trying so hard not to laugh the whole time.
04:05I knew what was coming.
04:06I was trying so hard not to laugh,
04:07and it just came naturally to you guys.
04:12We should have had a graphic with a dude
04:14with this big old tooth missing.
04:16Let's do it again tomorrow.
04:21Let's do it again tomorrow, Baze!
04:23Baze is our head writer.
04:24Let us...
04:24Can we do it again tomorrow?
04:27And finally, let's...
04:28But let's not mention it!
04:30See of the audience tomorrow.
04:35And finally, today was International Gin and Tonic Day,
04:38so I guess Trump's not...
04:46I don't know.
04:47I officially don't know what's going on.
04:50Finally, today was International Gin and Tonic Day.
04:53Our audience obviously knew.
04:56Finally, today was International Gin and Tonic Day,
04:58so I guess Trump's not the only one
05:00who can make executive orders.
05:04That's right!
05:05That's who you were applauding!
05:07Too late to take it back.
05:09You didn't know, but too late to take it back.
05:11That was a monologue, everybody.
05:15Got a great show for you tonight.
05:17You know it from Wednesday,
05:19as well as Beetlejuice,
05:20Beetlejuice, Death of a Unicorn,
05:21in the Scream franchise.
05:23She's currently starring in Clara and the Sun,
05:25which is in theaters everywhere this Friday.
05:27Jenna Ortega is here!
05:30She is a Food Network star,
05:34best-selling author, the host of the podcast,
05:36Happy Hour with Ina Garten,
05:37and might have outdrank me when we went day drinking.
05:40Her latest cookbook, Simply Ina, is available October 20th.
05:43Ina Garten is joining us.
05:45So happy she's back.
05:48Before we get to our great guest,
05:50Donald Trump's approval rating hit a new all-time low
05:54just two weeks ahead of the midterms.
05:56But don't worry.
05:57Trump is turning things around by ranting about the new stone
06:00at the White House and bragging about how expensive it is
06:03to dine at Mar-a-Lago.
06:04For more on this, it's time for A Closer Look.
06:11Well, we were only on hiatus for one week,
06:14and we missed an entire White House press secretary.
06:18Five days.
06:19That's how long she lasted.
06:20She got hired, gave one press briefing,
06:23and then got fired so fast,
06:25the melon and her welcome-aboard edible arrangement
06:27was still safe to eat.
06:30You got to eat that melon fast.
06:32That's not wait-a-day melon.
06:34She got fired so fast, I can barely remember her name.
06:36I think it was Kaylee Macarena?
06:40Kareed Zakaria?
06:43Kasey's sack of potatoes?
06:44I don't know.
06:44I feel like I'm close.
06:46I don't even remember where she came from
06:48or how she got the job.
06:50All I know is that judging from her first
06:52and only briefing, her previous gig
06:54was crew member on below deck.
06:58She looks like a cruise director about to tell passengers
07:01that norovirus ain't no big thing.
07:04The only other thing I know about her was
07:06is that she's a lawyer, maybe?
07:09Just not here?
07:10In America?
07:12You said she's an attorney.
07:13Where did she pass the bar exam?
07:15Which state?
07:15What did she tell us?
07:18I'm going to stop you right there.
07:21Actually, I don't have to stop her right there
07:22because that's where she stopped.
07:25She thought she could say,
07:26when I moved to China, and that would be the end of it.
07:29Donald Trump hired as White House press secretary
07:32a person who thought she could tell the press
07:34she passed the bar when I moved to China
07:36and reporters would just move on to the next question.
07:41Also, you don't even have to be a lawyer
07:43to be the press secretary, but she said she was
07:45and they believed her.
07:46Nobody checked because apparently
07:47they vet new employees less intensely than a record store.
07:52You like records? Right on.
07:54Can you start now?
07:56Trump probably wanted to make sure Katie Zachariah,
07:59that's her name, that's her name,
08:00was gone before SNL came back from hiatus,
08:04as even she was expecting she'd get mocked on the show.
08:08Saturday Night Live, you know they're going to be coming,
08:11you know this Saturday they're probably going to be doing something.
08:13Who would you like to have play you on Saturday Night Live?
08:16That's, uh, I know it's coming, yes.
08:19Um, I think, who would I like to have play me?
08:22Maybe a Scarlett Johansson type character.
08:25I could see that.
08:26A Scarlett Johansson type?
08:29It's SNL, they can get the real Scarlett Johansson.
08:33You sound like me when I heard Jost was marrying her.
08:36I was like, you mean he's marrying a Scarlett Johansson type?
08:40And they were like, no, he's marrying the real one.
08:42And I was like, yeah, rock and roll.
08:46Rock and roll, man.
08:48But that wasn't the only unceremonious departure from Trump world,
08:53as a, oh, oh, I already forgot what it was again.
08:56Chicken cacciatore?
08:58Doesn't matter.
08:59The point is, she wasn't the only Trump acolyte
09:02who lost her job last week.
09:04We start with breaking news out of Washington
09:06and the surprising resignation of U.S. Ambassador to Greece,
09:09Kimberly Guilfoyle.
09:10That's right, less than an hour after the White House announced
09:13she was asked to step down, Guilfoyle made it official,
09:16announcing her resignation on social media.
09:18The former Fox News TV host and fierce ally of President Trump
09:21is being investigated by the State Department
09:24over reports she took part in a pay-to-play scheme
09:27and other misconduct allegations.
09:30Are you considering firing her?
09:31Well, we're looking at it, yeah, we're not happy.
09:33Do you know how much corruption you have to be doing
09:36for it to be too much corruption for Donald Trump?
09:40That's like getting your yum-yucked by Hannibal Lecter.
09:45By the way, I'm aware it's weird for me, the 52-year-old man,
09:47to say the words getting your yum-yucked,
09:49but I'm going to own it.
09:51I think it's cool and makes sense and you can trust me
09:53because I got my degree in public speaking
09:54when I moved to China.
09:57Shout out University of Sichuan!
10:00The Wildcats.
10:01So, Kimberly Guilfoyle got the ax.
10:03Who was the White House messenger who had the unfortunate duty
10:07of informing the world of Guilfoyle's unceremonious canning?
10:11We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign.
10:14She has been a wonderful asset to the team,
10:17and we wish her well.
10:18Oh, my God, what are the odds?
10:20Guilfoyle got fired during what scientists call
10:23the incredibly tiny Zakarian window.
10:27Guilfoyle got fired, and then the person who announced
10:29her firing also got fired.
10:30It's like a Russian nesting doll if each doll
10:34was being escorted out by security.
10:37They got their little box, and inside that's a little box,
10:39and inside that.
10:40This is also an especially tough ending for Guilfoyle
10:43because she was almost, there was a time she was almost,
10:45part of the Trump family.
10:47This is somebody who was almost a part of the president's family.
10:50She was engaged to Donald Trump Jr. for a time.
10:54He wasn't a member of my family.
10:56She, uh, I guess dated my son a long time ago.
10:59I've known her for years. Not that well, but I've known her.
11:03What do you mean, not that well?
11:04She was your ambassador to Greece, she was engaged to your son,
11:07and she gave one of the looniest convention speeches
11:09of all time in 2020 when, despite there being no audience
11:12because of COVID restrictions, she cranked the energy
11:15up to the rafters.
11:17The best is yet to come!
11:21Trump...
11:24Trump probably saw that and said,
11:26she's too loud, put her somewhere I can't hear,
11:28and someone said, how's Greece?
11:31Trump claiming he didn't know Guilfoyle that well is cold.
11:33I mean, the guy won't have your back,
11:35even if you're borderline family.
11:36You can be engaged to become a Trump,
11:38but if you make him look bad once,
11:39he'll pretend like he's never heard your name.
11:41I'm sorry, I don't know the name you're saying.
11:43Melanie? Melania?
11:45It doesn't ring a bell.
11:46You'll have to ask my press secretary, Christy Macaroni.
11:51All of this turmoil, along with rising prices
11:53and the war in Iran, has put the GOP in a deep hole.
11:55We're only two weeks away from the midterms,
11:56and Trump is as unpopular now as he's ever been.
12:00President Trump's approval rating has reached
12:02a record personal low of 33 percent.
12:04This is according to a new ABC News poll,
12:07which also shows more than half of Americans say
12:09household purchases are unaffordable.
12:11The poll puts Trump's own approval rating at just 33 percent,
12:15with two-thirds disapproving,
12:17and just over half disapproving strongly.
12:19That sour view of Trump's performance is lower today
12:23than it was after a mob of his supporters ransacked the Capitol on January 6th.
12:28Three-quarters of Americans now have a negative view of the economy.
12:31Seventy-one percent in the poll now say gas is unaffordable,
12:35and 66 percent of Americans say Trump is using the presidency to enrich himself.
12:40Wow. People do not care for this man.
12:42But, unfortunately, they only seem to remember they don't care for him
12:46after they put him back in power.
12:48The American electorate is like a cast member on Jackass
12:51who sticks his in an electrical socket,
12:54gives it a try, immediately realizes how painful it is,
12:56passes out, wakes up four years later,
12:58forgets what's happened, looks at the socket and says,
13:00If you think it's funny, I'll give it a try.
13:04And those two stats tell the whole story.
13:0671 percent say gas is too expensive.
13:0966 percent say Trump is getting rich off the presidency.
13:12You can incite an insurrection.
13:14You can start an illegal war.
13:16You can lie about a pandemic.
13:17But if the cost of hamburgers goes up by 79 cents
13:20while you're making bank on a scam crypto coin,
13:23voters are going to look at you
13:24the way Nathan Fielder looks at Elizabeth Holmes.
13:26But don't worry, everybody.
13:28Trump is a last-minute gambit to turn things around.
13:30He knows exactly what the people want,
13:33and he's laser-focused on giving it to them.
13:35Major developments now in the ongoing legal battle
13:38over the golf course at East Potomac Park in Southwest DC.
13:41In a social media post this morning,
13:43President Trump laid out his plan to close the park
13:46so he can build a championship-level golf course
13:48over the next 15 months.
13:50In a true social post, President Donald Trump said
13:52he plans to close the historic golf course for 15 months
13:55to transform it into what he says will be,
13:58quote, one of the best golf courses in the world.
14:01President Trump even shared a rendering of the proposed redesign
14:05Sunday afternoon.
14:06So gas is over $4 a gallon.
14:08Inflation is climbing.
14:09The Iran war is deadlocked.
14:10Measles is spreading.
14:12AI might kill us.
14:13And there's a new strain of drug-resistant,
14:15sexually transmitted diarrhea.
14:19Sorry to be the bearer of that news.
14:23But don't worry, everyone.
14:24There's going to be a new golf course
14:26close to the president's office.
14:39Republicans must be so happy that Trump has finally given them
14:42a closing message to run on.
14:43Michigan and Texas are going to be filled with lawn signs
14:46that say four more years.
14:49Please, Mr. President, no one cares about your golf course.
14:52Polling on the economy has never been worse.
14:53People are furious.
14:54You have to give voters something, anything,
14:56to feel good about.
14:57Does anybody want to see a great work of art,
15:00a great thing of beauty?
15:02Yeah, I mean, sure.
15:04I mean, I like beautiful things as much as the next guy.
15:07I mean, I don't want to let it sidetrack me from the important
15:09issues affecting Americans, but you do have my attention.
15:13Show me something beautiful.
15:14Just please tell me it's not going to be that stupid helipad.
15:18The helipad, right?
15:21The helipad has gotten unbelievable architecture reviews.
15:25It's a helipad!
15:27No one's giving incredible architecture reviews.
15:30What magazine are you reading?
15:31Katie's Architectural Digest?
15:34It's not architecture. It's paving.
15:36You didn't build the Sistine Chapel.
15:39You made the White House lawn look like the roof of a hospital.
15:43But Trump is so wildly out of touch that even with record
15:46disapproval among voters, he's still bragging about his
15:48stupid helipad like it's something the rest of us should
15:50be blown away by.
15:51He did it again today at an event that was supposed to be
15:54about women's health.
15:56Rather than stay on topic, he spoke in length about the new patio
15:59that replaced the White House Rose Garden.
16:01That stone is so beautiful.
16:04You know, I've been here when we had grass.
16:07You know, this is built on a wetland and the grass was always wet.
16:10If it didn't rain for two weeks, the grass was soaking wet.
16:13See the cushions, those beautiful yellow cushions?
16:15They're supposed to be a half an inch high.
16:17I said, how about four inches? Don't they feel nice?
16:20They don't make them in four inches.
16:21I had them specially made four inches for everybody.
16:24So it lifts you up higher and it's a lot more comfortable
16:27than the one inch deal.
16:29Well, enjoy it.
16:30And outside you have the new heliport that just opened.
16:33Stop talking about the heliport.
16:36No one cares about the heliport.
16:39If our number one priority was remodeling the White House,
16:42we would have elected Chip and Joanna Gaines.
16:45But Trump simply cannot help sounding wildly out of touch
16:48because this stuff is all he cares about, his own life of luxury and privilege,
16:52even when he's supposed to be campaigning.
16:54At a rally in Georgia, Trump repeated his promise to send
16:56$5,000 checks to every American adult if Republicans win the midterms,
17:00even though Republicans are already in charge of everything.
17:03He could do it now.
17:04But in the process, he couldn't help reminding everyone
17:06he is much richer than you.
17:09The only caveat is you have to spend that $5,000
17:14in the United States of America.
17:16So let's go to Miami, darling, or let's go to...
17:19Let's go to Palm Beach and enjoy the president for lunch.
17:23Let's have lunch at Mar-a-Lago.
17:28Where for $5,000, you'll get one hamburger and a small dessert.
17:34I shouldn't say that, that's...
17:40I shouldn't.
17:43It's probably true.
17:44It might sound like a lot for a burger,
17:47but you have to remember it's also a bribe.
17:50I'm not joking.
17:51That's what it says on the check right below tax and gratuity.
17:55Mar-a-lago.
17:56The food is bad.
17:57The conversation is worse.
17:59But on the upside, the cushions are three feet tall.
18:02Publish will blame anything or anyone for their standing in the polls.
18:05Joe Biden, fake news.
18:06But the reality is obvious.
18:08Voters are furious because prices are soaring.
18:10All Trump seems to care about is his golf course and his helipad.
18:13And judging from the polls, if the GOP loses in the midterms in two weeks,
18:18many voters will see it as...
18:20A great thing of beauty.
18:21This has been A Closer Look.
18:27We'll be right back with Jenna Ortega!
18:35For more of Seth's Closer Looks,
18:37be sure to subscribe to Late Night on YouTube.
18:48Our first guest tonight is an Emmy-nominated actress.
18:51You know from her work on the hit series Wednesday,
18:53as well as movies such as Beetlejuice,
18:55Beetlejuice, Death of a Unicorn, and the Scream franchise.
18:58She stars in Clara and the Sun,
19:00which will be in theaters everywhere this Friday.
19:02Let's take a look.
19:02I really, really saw her this year.
19:04I didn't know how it was going to end up.
19:06Just get in the box.
19:07No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
19:08Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
19:09Can we just talk about this really quick?
19:10No, we're not going to talk about it.
19:11But Josie just wanted to go to Morgan Grove.
19:13Shut up.
19:14I mean, I don't want to put...
19:15I take the blame.
19:16See, I'm not ready to go back to the store.
19:18Get your hand in the box.
19:20Get your hand in the box.
19:21This isn't going to fit in the car.
19:24Let off.
19:26Opsie-daisy.
19:28Opsie-daisy.
19:29Who's Daisy?
19:29Please welcome back to the show,
19:31Jenna Ortega, everybody.
19:41Thank you.
19:49Hello.
19:50How are you?
19:51I'm doing all right.
19:52How are you?
19:52I'm good.
19:53I'm very happy you're back.
19:54Nice.
19:54Yeah, I'm pretty glad too.
19:55All right.
19:56Yeah.
19:57You know what?
19:58I'm not going to put it on the poster,
20:00but I'll take it.
20:00Leave it there.
20:01We'll leave it at that.
20:02I'm very excited as well.
20:04You wrapped season three of Wednesday.
20:07It's true.
20:08I'm very excited because season two,
20:09you drove off into the sunset with my dear friend,
20:11Fred Armisen, Wednesday's dear friend, Uncle Fester.
20:15And I mean, I'm hopeful, you know,
20:17I'm going to see the two of you together a little.
20:19I think maybe a touch.
20:21Okay, great.
20:21We're related in the show.
20:23Yeah.
20:23And the last time you saw me, I was with him.
20:25Yeah, maybe.
20:27So there's a good chance that the next time you see me,
20:29he might be there as well.
20:30That's great.
20:31Yeah.
20:32This is...
20:34I don't know.
20:35I'm not allowed to say much about this.
20:36I know what I was going to say.
20:38Like, I was going to say you should have said spoiler alert,
20:40but I feel like nothing was spoiled.
20:41Yeah.
20:42Really nothing.
20:43You know, they trained me well.
20:44They really do.
20:45Were they, did they have,
20:46are you somebody you needed to be trained well about spoilers?
20:48You seem like someone who wouldn't be willing
20:50to give things away anyway.
20:51No, I, I, no.
20:53I feel like I'm going to,
20:55as somebody who barely knows you,
20:57I would feel very safe if I gave you a secret.
20:59I think I've given so much in this conversation already.
21:01Yeah, but that's what I mean.
21:02I'd be heartbroken if like this,
21:04if like the minute you leave me,
21:06you just tell everybody everything.
21:07Yeah, I spoil everything as soon as I hit backstage.
21:10You know when the camera,
21:11as soon as the light goes off,
21:12you're just spoiled city.
21:13Yeah, talking .
21:16I do want to check in because last time we were here,
21:18we talked about you were filming in Ireland.
21:19You went to the pet shelter.
21:21You adopted a dog.
21:23Yes.
21:24This is your dog now.
21:25She, yes.
21:26What is your dog's name?
21:28I'm sorry, I forget.
21:29Um, well, she goes by a bunch of different names,
21:31but most people know her as Twigs.
21:33Twigs, gotcha.
21:34Twigs.
21:34When she sleeps,
21:35she looks like a pile of burnt sticks.
21:38She likes it.
21:38Now, a lot of dogs just go by the one name.
21:40Why does yours have so many?
21:43Just because she, nothing really suits her.
21:47Yeah.
21:47Like, we, we just, and she has little fixations.
21:52Like, she was obsessed with licking people's toes for a while.
21:55Uh-huh.
21:56So what?
21:56So she went by Toes.
21:57I was going to say.
21:58She looks like Twigs.
21:59Uh-huh.
21:59She looks like, um, uh, she's been called Mouse.
22:03She's been called Chicken.
22:05Gotcha.
22:05Did she have a name at the,
22:07when you, uh, adopted her from the shelter, did she?
22:09She didn't.
22:10Really?
22:10So you got, it was, it was, uh, it was fresh, fresh road.
22:14Yeah, completely.
22:14You could give her whatever name you wanted
22:16and you've just been trying them all out.
22:17Yep.
22:18Yeah.
22:19I'm more fascinated with love and respect to Twigs.
22:21You also were, uh, what's the word for,
22:25you did not fully adopt, but you were fostering.
22:27That's the word.
22:27Yes, I was fostering chinchillas.
22:29Three chinchillas.
22:30Yes, I miss them every day.
22:31Gotcha.
22:31So when you went back to film, uh,
22:33did you go back to check on the chinchillas
22:35that you had been fostering?
22:35Well, someone adopted them.
22:36Really?
22:37Yeah.
22:37You seem angry about this.
22:40I think usually...
22:41It's good for them and it's not the point of fostering.
22:43So if they're happy, I think they are.
22:48That's really funny.
22:48It's very funny to think of like, uh, I don't know,
22:51a foster parent being so upset that they actually found a home.
22:54Well, you get really jealous.
22:55Also, I have a lot of my friends,
22:57they started off fostering their dogs and then,
22:59you know, adopted them.
23:00So it's just...
23:01I would imagine.
23:01Like, I kind of can't believe people can foster.
23:04Yeah.
23:05But the chinchillas, I guess you had to return
23:07because you couldn't bring chinchillas.
23:08Yeah, you couldn't bring the chinchillas back.
23:09I wasn't allowed to stay in Ireland.
23:10No.
23:11No.
23:11Did you give the chinchillas names?
23:13Yes, there was Alma, Donald, and Basil.
23:17Okay.
23:17So I chose two Irish names and then Basil,
23:20I just thought was really cute for the little run.
23:22Yeah.
23:22And he was...
23:23Would you, in a perfect world,
23:25if you had been able to bring three chinchillas back to America,
23:29would you have or are they just not good long?
23:32Really?
23:32Yeah, you could be, like, reading a book
23:33and one would be sitting on your shoulder.
23:35Yeah.
23:35It was amazing.
23:36Yeah, look into chinchillas if...
23:39Look into chinchillas.
23:40Yes.
23:41Hashtag ad or hashtag not an ad?
23:43Are you connected to...
23:44It's kind of an ad.
23:45If I find out you're connected to big chinchillas...
23:49They are nocturnal.
23:50So if you need to sleep at night,
23:52you will hear them, like, breaking stuff
23:53in the other room and running around.
23:55Okay, great.
23:55I'm very glad you put in the reason
23:57none of us should do this right at the end.
23:59Yes.
24:00Literally, I was about to get on chinchilla.com
24:02and I'm like, hold on.
24:03You should.
24:04Cancel order.
24:05I don't want...
24:05I don't want to hear...
24:07I don't want to hear three little tiny things.
24:09They're like, so while they're on your...
24:11Like, while you're reading your book,
24:12getting ready for bed,
24:13they're just getting all jazzed up on your shoulder.
24:15They're like, the minute you turn the lights off,
24:16I'm going nuts in this place.
24:18It's true.
24:18All right, well, it's good to know.
24:20I learned a lot about chinchillas.
24:21You're welcome.
24:21And now I want to learn a lot about your next project.
24:24Will you stick around?
24:25You guys, this is Jenna Ortega. We'll be right back.
24:46We're here with Jenna Ortega.
24:48Yeah, your new film, Clara, is based on a book.
24:52Yes.
24:53And you play an artificial friend.
24:56Yeah.
24:57Did you enjoy this?
24:59I did. I did, actually.
25:00I was quite interested in the script
25:02because it was very different from everything else
25:04that I had been receiving.
25:05After Wednesday, I felt like I was getting a lot of
25:07teenager angsty, upset.
25:10So it was kind of hard to get onto a job that wasn't that.
25:14But I like to work, and I like to do what I do.
25:18So this was very different for me.
25:20This character is very, well, she's not real,
25:22but she's very happy and overly excited about everything,
25:25like, to a fault almost.
25:27Like, people are really turned off,
25:28and they don't want to buy her from the store for a while
25:30because she's so in your face.
25:31So that was kind of an interesting challenge.
25:33But then it's also based off of a book by Ishiguro,
25:35who did Remains of the Day, Never Let Me Go,
25:38incredible award-winning author, really moving work.
25:40And I fell in love with the book.
25:41And then I had a good conversation with the director,
25:44Taika Waititi, and then everything just started
25:46falling into place.
25:47Did you and Taika have conversations about how you play
25:49a character who is close to human without entirely being human?
25:53Yeah, well, I had no idea what to expect
25:55because I was reading the script, and every five seconds,
25:57she's falling and tripping all over the place.
25:59She has no understanding of, like, any sort of boundary.
26:03So I just was asking, well, do you want a super obvious
26:06robotic performance or not?
26:07But he didn't want...
26:09She's...
26:09All of the characters in the film, all of the humans in the film
26:12are very flawed and sort of depressed and angsty,
26:15and he wanted to make sure that people were still feeling
26:19some sort of sympathetic feeling towards Clara,
26:22even though she's artificial,
26:23and that's kind of a touchy situation right now, publicly.
26:26Yeah, yeah.
26:27So we played her human,
26:28and then just sort of allowed physical comedy
26:30to carry the more inhumane aspects, which is great.
26:35It's very fun, and I'm very glad you get out of it.
26:37I mean, again, I think people see you, you know, again,
26:40when you're so exceptional in a show like Wednesday,
26:42people assume, like, oh, I want to keep seeing her that way,
26:44and it's nice to see you outside of that.
26:46Yeah.
26:46I'm also wondering, like, with Wednesday,
26:49is there an assumption that you are more excited
26:51about Halloween than other people?
26:55Yeah, I get a lot of questions that are Halloween-related.
26:58Yeah. But it's true. It is my favorite holiday.
27:00Okay, gotcha. So it's not that off-face.
27:03No, no, no.
27:04And it's always been? Like, even as a child?
27:07Always.
27:07Gotcha.
27:07Always. I love costumes.
27:09Yeah. Yeah.
27:10Were you the kind of kid who made your own costume,
27:12or did you have sort of a lot of parental help?
27:14Uh, yeah. No, we made some of our own costumes.
27:16I was a rock one year.
27:18Oh, wow.
27:19Where is... What is the starting place with rock?
27:21Like, when you're a kid, he wants to be rock.
27:23You go to, like, Hobby Lobby or something.
27:24Okay.
27:25You get a big block of styrofoam, and you spray paint it.
27:27Okay, gotcha. And I had a headband,
27:28I think, that said rock.
27:29Oh, that helps.
27:30Yeah.
27:31I think you need to have something that says rock,
27:32because otherwise, the whole day, people are going to be like,
27:34what are you supposed to be?
27:35Right. But you see rock, you're like,
27:36thank you for, you know, letting me know exactly what I'm looking at.
27:40I was a pile of garbage one year, and...
27:42How was that?
27:42It was great. And my dad, like...
27:44And it was your idea?
27:44It was my idea. My dad did all the work.
27:46And I, looking back, and based on the feedback,
27:49the biggest mistake I made was a headband that didn't say garbage.
27:52Oh.
27:53Yeah, because there was a lot of like,
27:54are you a pile of leaves? Are you, you know, like...
27:56Nobody actually knew I was supposed to be garbage.
27:58But it was okay.
27:59It's fine. How old were you?
28:00I think it's okay. It was last year.
28:02Oh, yeah. I was going to say 20.
28:04Yeah, it was last year.
28:07And my dad was like, I'm too old to help you with this.
28:10I was like crying.
28:10And I'm like, what am I going to do, ask my kids?
28:12And he's like, I don't think you should do it at all.
28:16Um, what about this year then?
28:17Do you have anything picked up?
28:18No, I don't know what to do this year.
28:19It's coming up. I really need help.
28:21I know. Do you know what you're doing?
28:22Are you the kind of person, uh, I don't think I'm going to be anything.
28:24I'm going to walk around with my kids.
28:26Because the garbage went that bad, huh?
28:27Yeah, yeah, yeah.
28:27Yeah, you're just over it.
28:29Yeah, I'm going to be a reformed garbage.
28:32I'm going to be like, I'm the guy who cleaned up his act.
28:36It's late. You're late.
28:38Are you somebody who...
28:39I'm late? No, I do it last minute.
28:40It's like nothing.
28:41Like, last year, I was walking, or two years ago,
28:45I saw a swan costume, and then I was Bjork at the Oscars,
28:49which was great and easy, because you wore that swan dress.
28:52And then last year, I wanted to go out to, like, this big parade,
28:55and I was the Invisible Man.
28:57Okay, so what was that? What did you wear for that one?
29:00I bandaged my face with...
29:02Oh, great.
29:03...and stole a hat and a trench coat from a friend.
29:06It was just, like, a little suspicious going into pubs.
29:08Yeah, yeah, yeah.
29:08I was in Ireland, and then they just...
29:10I think it looked like they were sneaking a child into the...
29:13So I had to, like, pull off the face.
29:15I got invited to a Halloween party I don't want to go to.
29:18I'm going to tell people I went as the Invisible Man
29:20and then just not show up.
29:22I thought I was so witty for saying that when I was 12.
29:25But respect.
29:26Respect.
29:27Oh, my God! Thank you!
29:29That's so much. Thank you for the respect.
29:31Wait, hold on. Clarification.
29:32I was just glad that this idea was appreciated by somebody else.
29:36I didn't mean to sound...
29:37That means the world. That means the world to me.
29:39You know what? I dressed up...
29:41I dressed up like garbage last year,
29:43but you're the first person to truly make me feel like them.
29:51Taylor Day, everyone. Clara and the Sun.

30:50Our next guest is an Emmy-winning Food Network star,
30:53a best-selling author, and the host of the podcast,
30:55Happy Hour with Ida Garten.
30:57Her 14th cookbook, Simply Ida, is available October 20th.
31:02Please welcome back to the show, Ida Garten, everybody!
31:05Happy Hour with Ida Garten.
31:24Oh, please!
31:26They're lovely.
31:27It's a lovely group.
31:28Congratulations to your 14th cookbook.
31:30Can you believe it?
31:30Do you still get excited when you see it in print?
31:34Yeah, I hadn't seen it for a while because, of course,
31:36it goes to the printer.
31:37And I was paging through it going,
31:38oh, I have to make that recipe.
31:39Oh, I have to make that one, too.
31:41Oh, that looks good.
31:42Oh, that's very good.
31:43And I'm like, wait a minute, that's my book.
31:44That's your book.
31:44You're like, you're a big fan of your work.
31:47I would imagine 14in, is it hard to come up with a different...
31:51I mean, again, the cover photo, it must be like...
31:53Oh, the cover photo.
31:53That's the hardest part of the whole book.
31:55I would imagine.
31:55Because they probably, it's probably a photographer
31:57who's just trying their best, right?
31:59Really, and they have nothing to work with.
32:00And they're like, maybe just like, hold up a cupcake.
32:05They always want me behind the counter.
32:06And I'm like, can we do something different, please?
32:08Yes, well...
32:09There was one where I was like sauteing cherry tomatoes
32:11or something on the cover.
32:13Can we just toss them in the air?
32:15Oh, did they make you, they made you toss them?
32:17No, that was my idea.
32:18Oh, that's a good idea.
32:19I didn't want it to be like, you know,
32:20me with a big platter or something.
32:22This is, I like this one.
32:23I'm, I'm...
32:24And then, and Simply Ina, do you...
32:26I mean, I know simplicity is kind of, you know,
32:29it's the important part of how you cook.
32:31Well, you know what?
32:31It's just, it's, I want to cook really simply.
32:34So I invite people over more.
32:35So you have to come one of these days.
32:37I mean, I would love an invite.
32:39But like, I want an official out.
32:41I don't want one of these like open-ended,
32:43it's up to me to just show up.
32:44That's exactly right.
32:45I love when people call and say,
32:47oh, we should get together sometime,
32:49which means we're never getting together.
32:51Oh, yeah.
32:52Now, is it true that some people have, like strangers,
32:55have tried very hard to get invited to a dinner party?
32:58Oh, yeah, a few people have tried that, yeah.
32:58And how do they go about getting invited?
33:00They email, email me and just say, you know,
33:03like, I'd love to be on your show.
33:05And we send them back this, you know, very nice note saying,
33:08well, these are actually Ina's friends.
33:10Right.
33:11She doesn't just have strangers on her show.
33:12That would be a massive security risk.
33:14Yeah. Exactly.
33:16And then one time my assistant came in and she said,
33:18I feel really badly.
33:19I said, what?
33:20She said, I just realized that we had gotten an email
33:22from Jennifer Garner.
33:24And I sent back an email saying,
33:26these are actually Ina's friends.
33:28And I was like, I could be friends with Jennifer Garner.
33:31I'm sure you rectified that situation.
33:33And now we are.
33:34I would imagine, one, I bet the publisher
33:36makes you sign a fair amount of books.
33:38Oh, my God.
33:39And I mean, sitting, I mean, I've had to do one.
33:41Just a few.
33:42Oh, and it's harder than it looks.
33:45It's a lot harder than it looks.
33:46I actually have to ice my hand.
33:47Yes.
33:48How many did you have to sign?
33:49Less.
33:50I will say they, when mine they did,
33:52they gave me stickers to sign.
33:53Yeah.
33:54So not actual books.
33:54They're called book plates.
33:55Yeah, book plates.
33:56Thank you very much.
33:58And book plates.
33:59If you want to know what a book plate is,
34:01it's a sticker.
34:03But I had a box of them.
34:05And I remember I waited too long,
34:08like classic procrastinator.
34:09And that was like the day before I needed them.
34:11And like, I thought it would go so much faster.
34:13Oh, no, no, no, no.
34:13Yeah.
34:14Start like a year before.
34:15You have to start a year before.
34:16I have to do like 25 or 30,000.
34:1830,000?
34:19That's mind boggling.
34:20Well, it used to be I had to do 30,000 books.
34:23Yeah.
34:24Handling all, so.
34:25Yeah, it made it easier with the printing plates.
34:29But also, I would imagine, you know,
34:31people independent of the ones you sign ahead of time
34:33want you to sign your book all the time.
34:35Yeah.
34:36Do they ask you?
34:37Have you ever had anybody ask you with like a...
34:38You mean like backstage just now?
34:40Oh, you had a few backstage.
34:41Sorry, we can't keep people away from you, Ina.
34:43You're a magnet.
34:45Have you had an inopportune time that people have asked you
34:48to sign things?
34:48Oh, I've been standing on the street in Paris
34:50when it's pouring rain and I just came from the hairdresser.
34:53And people are like, could you sign my book?
34:55And there was one time I was actually,
34:57I was in the hospital.
34:58I just had surgery and I woke up
35:01and there was a nurse standing over me going,
35:03could you sign my book?
35:04I'm like, where am I?
35:07You should have been more clever.
35:09She's like, hi, this is a release form.
35:12We need this to fill your prescription.
35:16You have a new podcast.
35:17I'm going to come and do your podcast in a couple of weeks.
35:22I guarantee there'll be cocktails involved.
35:24Well, it's called Happy Hour.
35:26Great guests.
35:27Exactly.
35:27So what kind of cocktails do you like?
35:29Oh my God.
35:29Well, I mean, I don't want to like...
35:31You're a tequila kind of guy.
35:32I love a tequila cocktail,
35:33but I also don't want to get in the way
35:35of whatever you might choose to make me.
35:36No, I want to do something you'd love.
35:38Um, I'm sure I'd love anything you made.
35:39But this is interesting,
35:40because you're not cooking with your guests.
35:42No.
35:42You're just drinking with them.
35:44Yeah.
35:44And we went day drinking.
35:45We did.
35:45So I guess my question is like,
35:46do you have any shame about just ripping me off?
35:52None.
35:53Would you?
35:55What made you have this decision?
35:57I mean, was it that you just wanted to be sort of more
35:59conversation-minded?
36:00Because I don't know how on your talk show,
36:03I mean, your show, your cooking show,
36:05it must be so hard to actually cook and have full conversations.
36:08Drinking makes it easier.
36:09Drinking definitely makes it easier.
36:11But also, we're sitting down and we really only had six minutes to
36:14actually have a conversation.
36:15You can't.
36:16You can have an interview, but you can't have a conversation.
36:18So now it's like 45 minutes.
36:21And you can really have a real talk with somebody,
36:23which is wonderful.
36:24It is very nice.
36:25And the talk gets better as people drink more.
36:28That's what I have found as well.
36:30Both on camera and off.
36:34You had your husband, Jeffrey, on your cooking show recently.
36:38And you actually asked him if it was true that he was in the CIA.
36:43It was interesting to me that you weren't sure.
36:46You have to understand the history because he was a Green Beret.
36:49Yeah.
36:49He was a paratrooper.
36:50His first job ever was in the White House.
36:53Yeah.
36:53So what would you think?
36:54CIA.
36:56And then many years later, we were in, and every once in a while,
36:59I'd ask him about it and he'd go,
37:01well, you know, the wives are always the last to know.
37:05So I had built, I had renovated a house in East Hampton.
37:08And it was all done.
37:09And I went up to the attic to put something there.
37:11And there was an enormous system of, I don't know,
37:17it was some kind of an antenna on the, the entire floor was covered with an antenna.
37:22Oh, my goodness.
37:23And I went, oh, my God.
37:24He's like listening to North Korea.
37:25Yeah.
37:26From up here.
37:26I had no idea what this is.
37:28And I built the house.
37:29Yeah.
37:30So I didn't, for about an hour, I was totally freaked out that he really is in the CIA.
37:34Yeah.
37:35And then he came home and I said to him, oh, no, I actually called the audiovisual guys.
37:40And I said, did you happen to put an antenna in the attic?
37:42And they said, oh, yeah, we put a huge one in so you could listen to BBC if you wanted
37:47to.
37:47Oh, very.
37:48It was either a cover.
37:49Oh, yeah.
37:50That's a classic cover.
37:51Yeah.
37:52If anybody asks, say it's the BBC.
37:54It's the BBC.
37:55Do you have any pet, you obviously, you're this consummate host.
38:00Do you have any pet peeves or good piece of advice about hosting a perfect dinner party?
38:05I think the most important thing is how you greet people at the door.
38:09If there's music playing and the host greets you at the door with a big hug, they're happy
38:15to see you, as opposed to when you arrive at the house, the lights aren't on, there's
38:20no music playing, nobody greets you, and you think, am I at the wrong house?
38:23Am I on the wrong day?
38:24You just hear voices from the kitchen being like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
38:28They're here, they're here, they're here.
38:30They're here.
38:31Who invited these people?
38:32I told you to turn the lights off and pretend we were out of town.
38:34Well, they're here.
38:36I would imagine people, maybe you're even hesitant to invite you to a dinner party.
38:42They probably get nervous about having, they're not, okay.
38:45I don't think, I mean, they shouldn't be, because if you're a cook,
38:48if somebody just invites you for dinner and makes a peanut butter and jelly sandwich,
38:51you don't have to shop for it, you don't have to think about the menu,
38:55you don't have to do anything, you just show up.
38:56Okay.
38:57So, I hope not.
38:58All right, well, I...
38:59I'm available anytime.
39:00Okay, great.
39:01If this ends up being a situation where I have you over before you have me over,
39:05I'm going to be very upset.
39:07But I am very excited to see you on your podcast.
39:09I can't wait to do it.
39:10I think we're going to have a really good time.
39:10I'm looking forward to it.
