00:10Dozens of people have been detained in Paris following clashes with security forces during nationwide protests.
00:21Violence erupted in cities across France on Saturday, despite the deployment of thousands of police officers and riot units.
00:30Euronews' Valerie Gurria reports from the ground.
00:33To say the least, I had to walk out of the square for a while. I got quite a fair
00:40dose of tear gas a few minutes ago.
00:43And you see here the atmosphere is really a bit surrealistic.
00:48You see demonstrators taking pictures in front of the riot police who are standing by pretty quietly
00:56whilst other groups back on the square are launching sporadic attacks against what they deem are more aggressive demonstrators.
01:06And you have a mix between, indeed, angry demonstrators and very cheerful ones, singing, chanting.
01:14For now, everybody seems to be quite stuck and jammed and going in every sort of direction around the Place
01:21de la République.
01:23So we'll see how this will unfold.
01:26And Valerie Gurria in Paris for Euronews.
01:31I'm here in the heart of Paris, just steps away from the Place de la République.
01:36And as you can see behind me, the fire is raging.
01:39What started off as peaceful demonstrations in Paris has descended into scenes of violence.
01:44Myself and my cameraman were attacked earlier on the Pukana Janta, which is just a few steps away from where
01:50I am.
01:51As rioters looted a supermarket at Dalmashin, seeking to hit and open the shop with a hammer.
01:59We were encircled and rioters took our camera before eventually giving it back and hit and tried to physically assault
02:08us.
02:08But we managed to get away because some in the group let us leave.
02:14As you can see right now, fire trucks, fire trucks are arriving.
02:19And there's fire.
02:22And there's fire.
02:23And there's fire.
02:30Violent clashes were reported in the Albanian capital Tirana, where protesters threw stones at police,
02:36who responded by deploying water cannons and tear gas to disperse the masses.
02:41Students and other protesters gathered outside the Ministry of Education on Saturday,
02:46as anti-government demonstrations entered their fifth consecutive day.
02:49The protests, which have spread to cities across Albania,
02:54intensified after high school and university students joined a broader movement
02:57calling for Socialist Prime Minister Eddie Rama's resignation over allegations of corruption.
03:02The wider movement has been fueled in part by opposition to a controversial luxury tourism development
03:08linked to U.S. President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.
03:12Eddie Rama said he supported the right of students and other Albanians to protest,
03:16but warned that masked individuals inciting chaos, vandalizing, looting and committing crimes would be detained and prosecuted.
03:24Albania's police said 167 people had been arrested during the five days of unrest
03:29and announced that seven officers have been suspended amid probes into allegations of use of excessive force.
03:40Romanian President Nikosir Dan has said the Black Sea would only become safe after Russia's war in Ukraine ends.
03:47Dan called for greater NATO oversight in the region following recent drone strikes on commercial vessels.
03:54I'm very optimistic that we will have the support, the capabilities in order to better protect
03:59because it's an important economical question for Ukraine and for the whole region.
04:07Despite tensions between Europe and Washington regarding Ukrainian and European security,
04:12Dan expressed confidence in continued support from U.S. President Donald Trump.
04:18The Romanian leader spoke on the sidelines of an EU summit in Brussels.
04:22Leading up to the meeting, drones have damaged commercial vessels in the Black Sea off the coast of Bulgaria and
04:28Romania.
04:29The increasingly hostile security situation in the Black Sea pushed the Romanian leader and his Bulgarian counterpart,
04:36Prime Minister Roman Radev, to bring security threats higher up the agenda.
