00:00A vigil was held for 87-year-old Maria del Carmen Abascal, who passed on Wednesday night
00:05and whose eviction caused nationwide protests over housing policy.
00:11UK's exclusion from the maiden EU scheme would weaken Europe, a UK-maste award.
00:20Lawmakers in Kosovo elected economist and academic Justyna Shiroka-Pula as the country's
00:25new president in a marathon late-night parliament session on Wednesday.
00:31A vigil was held for 87-year-old Maria del Carmen Abascal in the Spanish capital after
00:36news of her passing was announced late on Wednesday.
00:39Madi Carmen, whose eviction from her long-time Madrid apartment sparked a national political
00:44crisis over affordable housing, died in hospital according to her lawyer, though the cause was
00:50not disclosed.
00:51Her eviction ordeal triggered nationwide anti-government protests demanding more tenant protections.
00:58Protesters, who've gathered in large numbers daily, place the responsibility of her death
01:03on the government.
Y yo
01:40espero
01:40que los responsables de esto paguen. Y vayan a juicio, de verdad. Eso que espero.
01:45Protestores say the news of her passing is especially painful, but have vowed to stay
01:49committed to the cause to uphold her legacy and ensure her death will not be in vain.
01:53Bueno, mucha pena. Creo que es lo que compartimos todos. Muchísima pena. Y sobre todo eso, el
02:00pensar que es la causa, la cabeza de toda esta revolución que ha habido y que no pueda verlo.
02:08Eso me da muchísima pena. Que no pueda ver si sale algo, si hay algún resultado de todo lo que
02:13ha
02:14luchado ella también. Eso es lo que más rabia me da, la verdad. Así que eso, mucha pena.
02:19Under intense domestic pressure, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has called for a snap election
02:24on 29 November, where housing policy is expected to shape the campaigns. His government also passed
02:31close to two dozen emergency housing measures on Wednesday to address the crisis.
02:40Europe risks weakening its industries if the UK is shut off from European supply chains as a result
02:46of the EU's Made in Europe policy. The UK's Minister for European Relations has told Euronews.
02:52Falcon has said that maintaining open supply chains was strongly in the EU and UK's interests.
02:58If we were to fracture that industrial base, that would simply mean a weaker Europe, both in the UK and
03:04in the EU.
03:05The EU wants to shield its domestic industries from unfair foreign competition by introducing a preference
03:11for European manufacturers in public contracts. The proposal is seen as a response to China's
03:17state-subsidized competition. But opinions are divided over what qualifies as European,
03:23and whether non-EU companies can be treated on an equal footing with their EU counterparts.
03:28The European industrial base is shared with the second largest export market for the EU,
03:35with the largest recipient of new EU vehicles, many of which are partially constructed in the UK.
03:42It would not be in either of our interests to see new barriers arising in our economic relations.
03:50Last week, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham raised his concerns over the scheme to European
03:55Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during the UN General Assembly in New York.
04:04Lawmakers in Kosovo elected economist and academic Justyna Shiroka-Pula as the country's new president
04:10in a marathon late-night parliament session on Wednesday. The election came just moments before
04:16a constitutional deadline that would have forced a snap election. It marks a significant moment in a
04:22political crisis in the small Balkan nation that has caused legislative deadlock for 19 months
04:27and two early parliamentary elections. Pula secured 81 votes in the 120-seat-strong parliament during
04:34its extraordinary session. Thousands gathered outside the building demanding the passing of a law
04:40to limit the powers of a special court in The Hague set up to prosecute war crimes committed by the
04:45Kosovo Liberation Army during the country's 1998 War of Independence from Serbia. Her election came after
04:53over two weeks of protests following a verdict by the court convicting four of Kosovo's wartime rebel
04:58leaders of war crimes, including the country's former president Hashim Taci, who were sentenced to
05:04between 13 and 25 years in prison. The legislation was adopted by lawmakers prior to Pula's election,
05:12which now awaits her presidential endorsement to come into effect. Shiroka Pula served as the head of the
05:19Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo before being elected to the largely ceremonial role of president,
05:25where she's the third female to hold that office. She was a last-minute candidate backed by the ruling
05:31self-determination movement and the largest opposition party, the Democratic Party of Kosovo.
05:40Following the arrest of former German Federal Intelligence Service Chief August Hanning on
05:46Tuesday, his long-standing confident and former head of cabinet Manfred D has now also been taken
05:53into custody. Federal prosecutors accuse both men of having used state secrets over many years to
06:00support private consulting activities and foreign interests, a crime that constitutes treason.
06:05Manfred D has been charged with aiding and abetting and remains in pre-trial detention,
06:11while Hanning is being brought before an investigating judge, according to reports. The two men have known
06:18each other since the late 1990s and worked closely together for many years at the Federal Intelligence
06:24Service and later at the Interior Ministry. The arrangement is believed to have been in place since 2010.
06:31In 2010, investigators bugged Manfred D's property and monitored him for months in a high-profile probe.
06:42The European Commission announced on Wednesday that 1.24 billion euros had been released
06:48for Ukraine to purchase domestically manufactured drones, drone interceptors, drone ammunition and munitions.
06:56Today's disbursement will help strengthen Ukraine's defense industry and Ukraine's ability to defend
07:02itself, said the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. The funding announcement
07:07comes as Russia continues its full-scale invasion against Ukraine. In recent weeks, this has amounted to an
07:14increasingly aggressive aerial campaign, putting its capital, Kyiv, on near-constant alert and
07:21disrupting daily life. The envelope is part of the bloc's Ukraine support loan, comprising a total of
07:2890 billion euros funding for 2026-2027. Two-thirds have been earmarked for the country's military and defense
07:35needs, with Brussels planning to disburse a total of 28.3 billion euros in 2026 to support the country's
07:43security. Future defense funding releases are planned in the coming weeks.
07:52Marco Rubio's visit to Athens had a strong geopolitical impact and was accompanied by a
07:58series of agreements that add new depth to the strategic relationship between Greece and the
08:04United States. The U.S. Secretary of State was in Athens for the sixth round of the Greece-U.S.
08:09strategic dialogue with defense, energy and security, as well as the economy and technology,
08:14at the center of the agenda. During the visit, Rubio sent a clear message to Europe to shoulder
08:20a greater share of the responsibility for its own defense and security, citing Greece as an example.
08:27One thing we agree on, for example, is that the nations of Europe need to take on a greater
08:32share of the burden in defending their continent, and Greece is doing just that. They're on track to
08:37meet the commitments that have been made to spend five percent of their GDP on defense this year,
08:42with over 3.5 percent of GDP being spent on core defense.
08:48In his remarks, the U.S. Secretary, without naming Turkey, referred to the delicate balances in the
08:54region, noting that some of the energy projects involve other countries and that such issues are
09:00best resolved through diplomacy. According to Rubio, Athens and Washington share a commitment to
09:06promoting regional and international security. When asked about media reports which,
09:12among other things, claimed that the U.S. could influence the fall of government even in Greece,
09:18Rubio declined to comment. Meanwhile, Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis left open the possibility
09:25of Greek naval assistance in the Strait of Hormuz.
09:54On the defense front, the focus was on Alexandropoli. The upgrade of the
09:59F-16s and the integration of the fighter jets F-35S into the Hellenic Air Force.
10:05The response from Rubio in Athens shows that Greece remains a critical speaker in Washington
10:12in a region where the tensions change constantly. The next time will show if this
10:18strength will be transferred to specific decisions and changes for Greece.
10:24From Athens for the GeoNews, Faye Doulgeri.
10:31The European Union stability is inseparable from the stability of its wider neighbourhood,
10:37Croatia's Prime Minister said during a discussion at the Med9 summit in Split. Leaders of the EU's
10:42nine Mediterranean countries gathered in Croatia to discuss a response to growing instability.
10:48The persistently volatile situation in the Middle East, Russia's unrelenting war of pressure
10:55against Ukraine, escalating hybrid threats and heightened global economic instability,
11:02are placing severe strain on our security, our economies and our long-term prosperity.
11:09Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the EU should take into account the impact
11:14of inflation on national budgets.
11:16Nei nostri bilanci, miliardi in più da spendere, che dovremo spendere, senza averlo deciso.
11:25E noi crediamo che questo vada oggettivamente valutato nei limiti di aumento della spesa consentita.
11:31Meloni added Italy would agree to use its variable fuel excise mechanism to lower fuel prices
11:38if needed.
11:39I will second.
11:41One more.
11:42Bye.
11:43Bye.
