00:00 Everyone thinks Earth and the Moon orbit like this, right?
00:02 Actually, that's wrong.
00:04 The Moon is much farther from Earth than you think.
00:06 You could fit every planet in the solar system in that gap with room to spare.
00:10 And here's another thing.
00:11 We picture the planets orbiting like this.
00:14 But at real scale, most planets are so far apart they'd barely be visible.
00:20 Uranus and Neptune especially.
00:22 The gap between them is so huge, you could fit Mercury through Saturn inside it.
00:27 In movies, Mercury is often shown as if it's practically stuck to the Sun.
00:31 But in reality, the Sun and Mercury are far enough apart that about 40 Suns could fit in the gap
00:36 between them.
00:37 For Mercury, the Sun appears about three times bigger than it does from Earth.
00:41 But that's not all.
00:42 We think the Sun just sits still while the planets orbit around it.
00:46 But the Sun itself is racing through the galaxy at 200 kilometers per second.
00:50 And the planets are racing along with it.
00:52 Right now, we're all moving faster than a speeding bullet through the galaxy.
