00:11Wolverine and the X-Men film franchise. We're talking pretty openly about the game's plot,
00:16so beware of spoilers ahead.
00:2810. No X-Men
00:34One of the biggest differences made to Marvel's Wolverine was clear to players before the game
00:38was even released. Since the game is set in the same universe as developer Insomniac's
00:42Spider-Man series, mutants are only starting to become known to the general public during
00:46this game's storyline. As such, the X-Men team does not exist.
00:58Although it seems strange for Logan's first adventure not to include the most famous team
01:02he's ever been a part of, there's always room for Charles Xavier and his school of gifted
01:06youngsters to appear in the future. Plus, it brings about some interesting changes when
01:10it comes to character dynamics.
01:209. A Sinister Villain
01:31Another key ingredient to Marvel's Wolverine that is completely different from the movies,
01:35is the inclusion of Nathaniel Essex, aka Mr. Sinister. Although Sinister has been one
01:40of the X-Men's greatest foes in comics, video games, and in TV for decades now, he has yet
01:46to appear in a big screen adaptation.
01:47Most Marvel fans are aware of Sinister's reputation, since he has always been depicted as the most
01:52vile of villains.
01:5410. A Sinister Villain
02:02Things are played a bit differently in Marvel's Wolverine. Nathaniel Essex, played by Troy Baker,
02:07is Logan's ally and team benefactor. However, as it should come as no surprise to fans, Essex's
02:13true nature starts to shine through once other villains are dispatched.
02:298. Too Few Mutants
02:41As we mentioned, not only do the X-Men not exist in Marvel's Wolverine, but mutants as
02:46a whole are relatively unknown. Most of the general public don't know mutants exist because
02:51there are so few of them, but also because some adults live with dormant X-genes unaware
02:55of their abilities. In other material, like the movies, mutants tend to show signs of change
03:00during adolescence. Additionally, much of the plot revolves around a machine called the
03:04Helix Engine, an ancient artifact that can awaken these genes and activate a person's
03:08dormant mutation.
03:109. This is the end of the movie.
03:17Although the movies have shown different ways to change a person's DNA, or even activate a
03:22latent mutation, the Helix Engine is a new creation.
03:327. The Reavers
03:42The antagonistic group known as the Reavers have only appeared in one live action movie
03:46so far, 2017's Logan. They were the enforcers of Al-Khali Transigen, a corporation creating
03:52mutants in a lab who enhance their own bodies with cybernetics to even the playing field
03:56against mutants. In Marvel's Wolverine, they make up the brunt of the enemy forces during
04:00the game's earlier missions.
04:028. Skullbuster, up there!
04:049. Get these trucks back to the refinery now!
04:10Instead of being a small outfit, they are instead the security force of Bolivar Trask, one of the
04:15world's most influential mutant haters and creator of the Sentinels. Because of their new employer,
04:20the Reavers clearly have a lot more resources in the game than they do in the movie, and
04:24therefore, a lot heavier firepower.
04:386. Frenemies
04:49While he may not be a part of the X-Men, Logan is still on a team in Marvel's Wolverine.
04:54Led
04:54by their benefactor Nathaniel Essex, Team X also consists of Mystique and Sabretooth. Although
04:59Mystique's characterization has changed in movies over the years, Sabretooth has always
05:03been a villain. It's almost weird to see Logan working with two characters we've seen
05:07him fight against for years.
05:087. What the hell happened out there?
05:108. Did my job.
05:15Although their dynamic naturally changes as Mr. Sinister's larger plot is revealed, there's
05:20camaraderie there that isn't present in the movies. This is mostly noticeable with Sabretooth.
05:24Where the movies focus mostly on the hatred between them, there's a begrudging respect
05:28and fondness in the game, despite how things turn out.
05:415. Gene and Logan's Relationship
05:57Many X-Men adaptations have depicted Logan's romantic feelings for Jean Grey, which usually
06:02aren't reciprocated because she's in love with Cyclops. Well, Cyclops seemingly doesn't
06:06exist in the world of Marvel's Wolverine, at least not yet. So, the relationship between
06:10Logan and Jean is entirely rewritten.
06:135. Gene joins Logan's fight after he helps her rescue some mutant allies while on a mission
06:26for Team X. From there, the two build a mutual care and feelings for one another as they continue
06:31fighting against Trask, another villainous organization, The Hand, and finally Mr. Sinister
06:35himself. There are even bigger changes made to Gene and Logan's backstory, but we'll get
06:40to those later.
06:504. Mystique & Tiger
07:03In the original movies, Mystique was never given a romance. When the universe received a soft reboot
07:08with 2011's X-Men First Class, the character was paired with scientist Hank McCoy. This is clearly
07:14very different from Marvel's Wolverine, and even the comics. In this game, Mystique is married to a woman named
07:19Tiger, a character with criminal ties in the comics who operates out of the largely lawless island Madripoor.
07:24In the source material, Mystique is married to Irene Adler, also known as Destiny, a mutant with precognitive abilities.
07:31Presumably, Insomniac wanted to keep this key part of Mystique's identity, but have her be married to someone
07:36who already has ties to Madripoor, a key location in Wolverine's story.
07:483. Lady Deathstrike
07:58Lady Deathstrike made her big screen debut in X2 X-Men United as a mutant brainwashed by anti-mutant villain,
08:05William Stryker.
08:05Although she has ties to Wolverine's past in the comics, which is hinted at in Marvel's Wolverine, her depiction is
08:11very different from what we saw in the movie.
08:13For one thing, the claws that extend from her fingernails are now cybernetic enhancements instead of a mutation.
08:18For another, she is shown to be a leading member of The Hand, an ancient evil organization in Japan.
08:24Although Logan himself has starred in a Japan-bound adventure, 2013's The Wolverine, The Hand obviously doesn't appear in it.
08:30In fact, in the MCU, the group has only been shown operating out of New York in Daredevil and Spider
08:35- Brand New Day.
08:37Then die standing! I don't care!
08:44You make her pay.
08:462. A Hint of Apocalypse
08:49Do you feel it?
08:522. Anger buried deep inside
08:56Throughout the game, Logan hears a mysterious voice in his head and experiences strange visions that hint at his foggy
09:01past.
09:02Eventually, it's revealed that this voice is a remnant of Apocalypse, the world's first mutant and one of Marvel's most
09:07powerful antagonists.
09:09The voice continuously tries to pull Logan back to his position as the Horseman of Death.
09:13While he has held that position in the comics before, that clearly didn't happen on the big screen.
09:17In fact, in 2016's X-Men Apocalypse, Wolverine only makes a brief appearance escaping the Weapon X program.
09:23And Apocalypse's four horsemen are instead Storm, Angel, Psylocke, and Magneto.
09:30Death's ten is over.

10:29The X-Men movies have been criticized for how they adapted the Phoenix storyline on two separate occasions.
10:34Marvel's Wolverine treats the cosmic entity very differently, though it still doesn't play a huge part until the end.
10:39It's treated someone like a reincarnation tool.
10:42Long ago, the Phoenix fell in love with Logan, who could wipe his memory as Horseman of Death, but could
10:47not fully stop Apocalypse from continuing to break through.

11:05Logan would kill the Phoenix in a blind rage, who then reincarnated, eventually as Gene, without the painful memories of
11:12their tortured romance.
11:13Mr. Sinister just happened to find Logan during one of these broken periods and exploited him for his own gain.
11:19With lovers as doomed as these, no wonder they didn't put Cyclops in the game.
