Bernie Sanders delivers a sharp criticism of Donald Trump, calling him “the most reckless president in history.” Sanders attacks Trump’s policies, accusing his administration of favoring the wealthiest Americans while working families struggle. He also urges voters to hold Trump accountable and calls for Democrats to win control of the U.S. Senate. Watch Sanders’ remarks on Trump, the economy, working-class Americans, and the upcoming political battle involving Republican Senator Susan Collins and Democratic candidate Troy Jackson in Maine.

00:00In my view, Donald Trump is the most reckless and irresponsible president in the history of America.
00:12He does not believe in the Constitution or the rule of law.
00:18He is a pathological liar.
00:22He is a narcissist who would name every building in America if he could, after him.
00:30And let me thank Ted Leo. Ted has been with us in Bangor, in Lewiston, in Biddeford.
00:37Let me thank Griffin William Cherry for the music as well.
00:42Joe Grassi, Kelly Brennan, Congresswoman Shelly Pengree.
00:51And last but not least, my very good friend, Troy Jackson.
01:03As everybody here knows, Troy started his campaign running for governor.
01:13And he ended up running for the Senate.
01:19And that is a hell of a transition.
01:22Washington is not a custom.
01:25But I think he has done a remarkable job in making that transition, in running a great campaign.
01:32I know everybody thought that he was going to debate Susan Collins five terms of the United States Senate.
01:39She would wipe them out.
01:41Didn't quite happen that way.
01:43Thank you, Troy.
01:51What I want to do this evening, and I'll try to keep my remarks under six hours.
01:58We'll get you home by two in the morning.
01:59Don't worry about it.
02:01I want to do a few things.
02:03Number one, I want to talk a little bit about the U.S. Senate.
02:07I work there, I know, and I think a lot of people don't understand how, in fact, the Senate works
02:14and why this election is so enormously important.
02:19Then I want to talk a little bit about what is going on in our country and why people are
02:26so very angry, and they are, from coast to coast.
02:30And then I want to talk a little bit about where I believe we should be going as a nation.
02:36All right.
02:36Now, what about the United States Senate?
02:38I think there are some people who have the conception that, you know, you've got two people, two senators from
02:44each state, 100 people come together.
02:47They sit around the room and somebody says, hey, I've got a great idea.
02:51Oh, Joe, what's your idea?
02:52Oh, wow, let's discuss it.
02:54Let's debate it.
02:55And then we're going to vote.
02:57And if it's a good idea, it's going to win.
02:58That is not how the U.S. Senate works.
03:03All right.
03:04The U.S. Senate works, whether it is on the Democratic leadership or Republican leadership, with the majority party holding
03:15virtually all of the power.
03:18Now, whether that's good or bad, we can discuss.
03:21I don't think it's so great.
03:22But that is the reality.
03:25You want to get a bill to the floor?
03:28Well, the majority leader makes that decision whether it gets to the floor or not.
03:34Now, the chairperson of every single committee is from the majority party.
03:42All right.
03:44So, in other words, what happens is determined not by 100 people, but by the majority party.
03:54And right now, in Washington, there are 53 Republicans who constitute the majority.
04:13And for better or worse, the people of Vermont have sent me to Washington as the longest-serving independent in
04:22the history of the country.
04:30Now, why did I make that point?
04:33I'll tell you a little bit about how the Senate actually functions.
04:36And the reason is that understanding how the Senate functions is especially important in this dangerous moment in American history.
04:49In my view, Donald Trump is the most reckless and irresponsible president in the history of America.
05:01He does not believe in the Constitution or the rule of law.
05:08He is a pathological liar.
05:12He is a narcissist who would name every building in America, if he could, after him.
05:19And he is running the most corrupt administration in modern history.
05:27His policies, above and beyond his own personality, his policies have worked wonders for the very richest people in this
05:37country.
05:37They are doing unbelievably well since Trump has been elected.
05:44And his policies have brought enormous suffering to many millions of working families in Vermont, Maine, and throughout our country.
05:53And here is the point.
05:55If you believe that Donald Trump and his policies are a danger to the United States and the working families
06:03of our country,
06:05then we cannot and must not allow the United States Senate to remain under Republican control and continue as a
06:16rubber stamp for Trump's policies.
06:29So what do I mean by that?
06:32I know that in Maine there are many people who like Susan Collins.
06:36That's fine.
06:37And there are many people in Maine who may have a disagreement with Troy on this or that issue, and
06:44that's called democracy, and that's fine.
06:46But here is the point.
06:48If you want to hold Donald Trump and his disastrous policies accountable, the only way to do that is by
07:02electing a Democratic Senate,
07:04and this election here in Maine may well determine whether or not that happens.
07:26So, yes, there are very strong differences between Troy and Susan.
07:35I happen to think that Troy is right, she's wrong.
07:41But that is not, in all due respect to both Troy and Susan, that is not the most important issue.
07:50The most important issue is that on the day when the Senate reconvenes, there will be the most important vote.
07:59Well, sometimes you don't even have to vote, we know, and that is which party controls the Senate.
08:07And on that issue, Susan Collins will be with the Republicans.
08:13There will not be accountability for the disastrous policies of Donald Trump.
08:19End of discussion.
08:28So let me give you some concrete examples of what I mean.
08:34Donald Trump and his friends threw some 15 million Americans off the health care they have,
08:47raised premiums on millions of others who are in the Affordable Care Act,
08:53in order to give a trillion dollars in tax breaks to the one percent.
09:02The only way we reverse that disastrous policy and make sure that people do not lose their health care is
09:13by ending Republican control over the Senate.
09:17The only way.
09:26All over this country, in Maine, in Vermont, all over America,
09:30people are sick and tired of Trump's illegal and unconstitutional war with Iran.
09:42That war has resulted in the deaths of 19 US service members, thousands of innocent civilians,
09:51raised prices in the United States for gas and for basic necessities.
09:58The only way.
09:59You want to end that war?
10:02Well, if you are in Maine and you want to end that war,
10:07and you vote Republican, you're going to continue that war.
10:11The only way you end that war is by ending Republican control over the Senate.
10:27Trump believes that climate change is a hoax.
10:34The only way.
10:35Well, if you want to try to save the planet for your kids and your grandchildren and future generations,
10:42the only way you're going to do that is by ending Republican control over the Senate.
10:54For the first time in American history, we now have a domestic army, and it's called ICE.
11:07In my view and in the view of most Americans, ICE is out of control.
11:15ICE has killed innocent Americans.
11:18We've thrown people into detention centers under horrendous conditions, and ICE has terrorized
11:26communities all over the country.
11:29Now, if you want to bring ICE under control, if you want to move to comprehensive immigration
11:37reform and a path toward citizenship for the undocumented, the only way you do that is
11:44getting rid of the rubber-stamp Republican U.S. Senate.
12:00I'm going to go into this issue a little bit deeper in a moment.
12:03But if you are concerned about the proliferation of data centers all over America, if you are
12:13concerned that AI might escape human control with potentially cataclysmic results, the only
12:25way we are going to get safeguards on AI is by ending the Republican rubber-stamp U.S. Senate.
12:43In other words, what has happened over the years, and it was not always the case, but what has
12:49happened in the last number of years is the Republican Party has become a cult of the individual.
12:56Trump says, Trump says, jump, and they say, how high?
13:03The American people do not want an uncontrolled Donald Trump to continue to break the law and do whatever he
13:12wants.
13:12That is the bottom line of this campaign.
13:16And here in Maine and all over this country, we've got to stand up to Trump, and we've got
13:22to make sure that we end this rubber-stamp U.S. Senate Republican control.
13:38But now let me tell you something that a lot of folks up here will not tell you.
13:43A lot of, you know, people in the Senate.
13:46And that is, in my view, as much as we've got to take on Trump every single day, we have
13:54got to be more than anti-Trump.
13:57We've got to be pro-working class.
14:13And here is the reason why.
14:17We are living in an unprecedented moment in American history for so many reasons.
14:24And it goes beyond Trump.
14:27Never before in the history of our country have so few people owned so much wealth and
14:35had so much power.
14:37Now, you're not going to see that on TV very often.
14:39And you're not going to hear it discussed in the halls of Congress.
14:44But right now, what you have is a handful of oligarchs who have unbelievable wealth.
14:51I mean, I'm talking about hundreds and hundreds of billions of dollars.
14:55These are people who control our economy.
14:59They are pushing AI despite the concerns of the American people.
15:04They're in the fossil fuel industry pushing more and more carbon out into the atmosphere,
15:10despite what it will mean for the well-being of our planet.
15:14These people have unbelievable wealth and power.
15:18Increasingly, they own the media, which determines what we see, hear, and read.
15:25When we were in school, you all remember reading about the Gilded Age?
15:30Rockefeller, Morgan, J.P. Morgan, Carnegie, those guys?
15:33The situation today is much more extreme and unfair than during the Gilded Age.
15:41You are living in a country now where the top 1% owns more wealth than the bottom 93%.
15:52You are living in a moment when never before in our history have we seen such an unprecedented level of
16:03greed.
16:04These guys are uncontrollable.
16:06They want more and more and more.
16:09You might think that if you were worth a few hundred billion dollars,
16:14that you don't have to take away health care from children
16:18or try to cut programs that low-income people, that's really the better.
16:23You might think enough is enough.
16:29I mean, how many mansions, how many private jets, how many islands?
16:35How much do you need?
16:39In America today, Elon Musk, the richest guy on earth, hear this.
16:44One man now owns more wealth than the bottom 53% of American households.
16:57CEOs of large profitable corporations are making 350 times more than their average worker.
17:09350 times.
17:12And over the past year, after receiving the largest tax break in history,
17:18fewer than 1,000 billionaires in America became over $2.2 trillion richer.
17:29People can't afford health care.
17:32People can't afford groceries.
17:34People are sleeping out on the streets.
17:37And fewer than 1,000 people became over $2 trillion richer.
17:45And I'll tell you why the American people are angry.
17:49They get up in the morning and they're working hard, trying to take care of their families,
17:55trying to put groceries on the table, feed their kids healthy food,
18:01put away a few bucks for retirement, trying to afford health care,
18:07saving away some money for the kids' education.
18:09And they see the people on top getting richer and richer while they struggle.
18:14And this is not a new phenomenon.
18:17I want you all to hear this, because it's not talked about very often.
18:21But it speaks, I think, to why the American people are angry.
18:24Despite massive increases in worker productivity and an explosion in technology,
18:31the average American worker is making $25 a week less than he or she did 53 years ago
18:43after adjusting for inflation.
18:47Here's another thing.
18:49Young people may not know this, so I'll tell the young people.
18:52There was once a time, trust me, check it out.
18:56You don't believe me, check it out.
18:58Google it.
19:00Where it was, I grew up in a family, it was a working class family.
19:04My family never had any money.
19:05We lived in a rent controlled apartment.
19:09But despite the fact that we never had any money, we had one person in my family.
19:15My dad worked all of the time.
19:18One person made enough money to pay the bills.
19:23So young people, there was once a time in American history where one person could work 40 or 50 hours
19:32a week and make enough money to keep the family going.
19:35How many working class families do you know today where both mom and dad are not working?
19:40Not many.
19:42So what the hell is happening?
19:45You're supposedly living in an economy stronger and stronger, more and more technology, more and more efficiency.
19:52And what we are seeing is almost all of the increase in that wealth has gone to the 1%.
19:59In fact, believe it or not, over the last 50 years, over $70 trillion has been transferred from the bottom
20:0890% to the top 1%.
20:15So what this campaign is about, it's not only who controls the United States Senate, as important as that is,
20:24it is whether or not we are going to have a country run by a handful of billionaires,
20:30or whether in fact we have a democratic society where the voices and needs of the people are heard and
20:37dealt with.
20:37That is what this campaign is about.
20:50Now the oligarchs control the economy, increasingly control the media, more concentration of ownership in America than we have ever
21:01seen.
21:02But they are doing something else which is extremely dangerous and nefarious.
21:07They now want to own the political process as well.
21:15Elon Musk himself spent $290 million to elect Donald Trump as president.
21:25And now, Musk is spending $200 million in this election.
21:33Money coming into Maine from Mr. Musk and other billionaires against Troy.
21:43Well, you don't need to know much more.
21:46That if Elon Musk wants to defeat Troy Jackson, we've got to elect Troy Jackson.
22:07So what must we do when Democrats regain control over the House and the Senate?
22:15I'll tell you what we do.
22:17Number one, we understand here and throughout this country that healthcare is a human right.
22:31Do you all know that we are spending twice as much per capita on healthcare as the people of any
22:39other nation?
22:40And yet we've got 85 million uninsured or underinsured.
22:45Tens of thousands of people die every single year because they can't get to a doctor on time.
22:51That is insane.
22:52That is cruel.
22:53That is unacceptable.
22:55Troy believes and I believe.
22:57We've got to guarantee healthcare to every man, woman and child through a Medicare for All single-payer program.
23:11At a time of massive income and wealth inequality, yes, the billionaires are going to start paying their fair share
23:20of taxes.
23:28Yes, we're going to protect the planet for our kids and future generations.
23:33We're going to take on the fossil fuel industry, create millions of jobs going into energy efficiency and sustainable energy.
23:48When tens of millions of workers are earning starvation wages, we're going to raise the minimum wage to at least
23:5620 bucks an hour.
24:03And when workers all over this country want to join a union but are illegally denied that opportunity by their
24:13bosses,
24:13we're going to pass legislation to make it easy and appropriate for workers to join unions.
24:26And I'll tell you something else that we're going to do.
24:30We're going to end endless wars.
24:41We don't need to be spending over a trillion dollars a year on the military,
24:46fighting wars which are unconstitutional, which are illegal.
24:51We're going to end that war.
24:54And we are going to do with the overwhelming majority of the American people,
24:59not provide another nickel to the genocidal government of Netanyahu in Israel.
25:23The brothers and sisters, brothers and sisters.
25:28We've got a lot on the table.
25:31And we are fighting not just for ourselves but for our kids, for our grandchildren,
25:37and for the future and well-being of this entire planet.
25:41Enormous responsibility.
25:44And I say this not to get you overly nervous,
25:48but there are seven or eight races around the country that are what we call within the margin of error.
25:54Right here in Maine, it's one.
25:56Some polls have Troy up by two.
25:58Others have Collins up by three, whatever it may be.
26:00It's going to be a close election.
26:02Every vote counts.
26:04And I don't want anybody in this room on election night at 2 o'clock in the morning
26:09to see that Troy has lost the state of Maine
26:13and Republicans continue to control the Senate because we didn't do the work we should have done.
26:20So I'm asking you all, I'm asking all of you to do everything that you can.
26:29Drag out your aunts and your uncles and your kids and everybody else to the polls.
26:35The future of America, future life of our kids could well depend on what happens right here in the great
26:43state of Maine.
26:44So please do all that you can and let us elect Troy Jackson as the next United States Senator for
26:52Maine.
26:52Thank you all very much.
