00:00The most dangerous president in the history of the United States.
00:08If you believe, as I do, that Trump does not respect or appreciate the Constitution of the United States, or
00:18in fact the rule of law.
00:21Thank you all for coming. Let me thank Ted Leo, Roddy Emily, Erin Overson, Maureen Bryant, and let me thank
00:31Troy, not only for the introduction, but for the extraordinary campaign that he is running.
00:43It ain't easy starting a campaign, running for governor, and ending a campaign when you're running for the U.S.
00:51Senate.
00:53But Troy has persisted and he's done a great, great job.
00:58What I want to do this evening is a couple of things.
01:04I want to talk a little bit about how the U.S. Senate functions or doesn't function.
01:14And why this election here in Maine is so enormously important.
01:22Then I want to talk a little bit about what's going on in our country.
01:26And Troy, I think, touched on some of the important issues.
01:30Then I want to talk about where I think we should be going as a nation.
01:36This will be about a six-hour speech.
01:40We'll break for dinner, but don't worry.
01:45Let me start off about the U.S. Senate.
01:48Because I think that throughout this country, folks don't really have a sense of how the Senate works.
01:57And I think a lot of people think, well, let's see, you've got two senators from every state.
02:02That's a hundred senators.
02:03They probably sit in a room.
02:05Somebody raises their hand.
02:06I have an idea.
02:08Let's debate it.
02:09And let's vote on it.
02:11And that's how the Senate works.
02:13Sometimes you win.
02:14That ain't how the Senate works.
02:17All right?
02:18And this is true under Democratic leadership, under Republican leadership.
02:23For better or for worse, and I am not sure that it is for better.
02:27But the way it works is the majority party has virtually all of the power.
02:35Okay?
02:36Now, people don't know this.
02:38They say, Bernie, why don't you get this bill up on the floor of the Senate?
02:41Ain't so easy.
02:43It is the Republican leadership, in this case a gentleman named John Toon, who controls the agenda.
02:51All right?
02:51They determine, it's true with Democrats as well, and Democrats have power.
02:55They determine what bills come up.
02:59They determine when the vote is going to take place.
03:03And they also control every committee.
03:09Got it?
03:09People don't know this.
03:11But the majority party controls every single committee.
03:16So, if you believe, as I do, that Donald Trump is the most dangerous president in the history of the
03:28United States.
03:33If you believe, as I do, that Trump does not respect or appreciate the Constitution of the United States, or
03:44in fact the rule of law.
03:48If you believe, as I think most Americans do, that he is a pathological liar.
03:56He is a narcissist.
03:59And he is running the most corrupt administration in modern history.
04:06And if you believe, as I think most Americans now understand, that his agenda is to represent the very wealthiest
04:15people in this country.
04:18And cause, as Troy was mentioning, just intense suffering for working families from Maine to California.
04:26That's the reality.
04:27Now, if you believe that, and if you believe that Trump and his policies are a danger to the United
04:35States,
04:36and a danger to working families all across this country,
04:40then we cannot allow the United States Senate to remain under Republican control.
04:56Because the truth of the matter, and I'm there, and I see it every day,
05:01the truth of the matter is the Republican Senate and the Republican House are nothing more than rubber stamps for
05:10Donald Trump.
05:13Now, I know that there are people in Maine who like Susan Collins, that's fine.
05:19There are many people in Maine who may have a disagreement with Troy on this or that issue, that's fine.
05:27But if you want to hold Donald Trump and his disastrous policies accountable,
05:34the only way we do that is by electing a Democratic Senate,
05:40and this election here in Maine could mean all of the difference.
05:53And when I say the election here in Maine could make all of the difference, that's just not rhetoric.
06:00Look, here is the fact. Right now, in the Senate, there are 53 Republicans.
06:08There are 45 Democrats and two independents, Angus and me.
06:14And we caucus with the Democrats, making 47.
06:19A lot of elections taking place all over this country.
06:24As many of you know, the people are catching on to Donald Trump.
06:28He is increasingly unpopular.
06:33And a lot of his Republican candidates are in deep trouble.
06:40And nobody knows.
06:42I mean, the polling here in Maine, very close.
06:45The polling in Iowa is close.
06:47Polling in Texas is close.
06:49Polling in state after state is,
06:52Alaska is very, very close.
06:54Nobody knows how this thing will turn out.
06:57But I will tell you, without exaggeration, that there is a real possibility
07:03that this election in Maine, whether Troy wins or not,
07:08can determine who controls the Senate and the future of the United States of America.
07:19So that is what this election is about.
07:22It's not just a contest between, you know, Troy and Susan or differences of opinion between the two.
07:29That's very important.
07:31But at the end of the day, what is most important is that we have got to put a check
07:37on this extremely dangerous president.
07:41A Republican Senate will never do that.
07:53Let me give you some very specific examples of what I mean about policy.
08:00I think all of you are aware that the so-called Big Beautiful Bill was in fact, was in fact
08:07the most dangerous piece of legislation,
08:11if not in American history, certainly in the modern history of this country.
08:15And what it did do, among other things, is throw 15 million Americans off the health care that they have,
08:27raise premiums for tens of millions more, double, triple, who are on the Affordable Care Act.
08:35And I am not just talking off the top of my head here.
08:38There are studies out there that show when millions and millions of people lose their health care,
08:44well, you know the answer.
08:45What happens if you're sick? You die.
08:48And the estimate is that many, many thousands of people, if they continue not to have health care,
08:54when they lose their health care, they will die. That's the reality.
08:56Now, if you are serious, and by the way, 15 million people were thrown off of their health care,
09:06massive cuts to Medicaid, Affordable Care Act, in order to give a trillion dollars in tax breaks to the top
09:161%.
09:21That is disgraceful.
09:23If you think that that is wrong, which the overwhelming majority of Americans do, people in Vermont do, people in
09:33Maine do,
09:34you've got to end Republican control over the Senate, so that we can reverse what Trump did.
09:49As everybody here knows, tragically, Trump started an illegal and unconstitutional war in Iran.
10:02The result of that is tragically 19 American servicemen are now dead.
10:12Thousands of innocent civilians in Iran and elsewhere are now dead.
10:17We are spending hundreds and hundreds of billions of billions of dollars on that war.
10:26The American people want us to end that war.
10:34They are tired of paying outrageous prices for gas, for heating oil, and for food as a result of that
10:45war.
10:47If you want to end that war, the only way you are going to do it is tell Trump he
10:56ain't going to get any money for that war.
11:03And the only way that happens is when we end Republican control over the Senate.
11:16All over the world, people are dealing with rising temperatures.
11:24Climate change has caused heat waves in Europe, in the United States, all over the world.
11:30We've got forest fires destroying millions of acres of land, drought.
11:35Trump thinks that climate change is a hoax coming from China.
11:44If you want to reverse that disastrous policy and leave the planet in a way that is habitable for our
11:53kids and grandchildren,
11:55you've got to get rid of Republican control in the Senate.
12:07Trump, for the first time in American history, has created a domestic army called ICE.
12:20And as I think everybody here knows, ICE is out of control.
12:25It has killed innocent Americans, thrown knock down doors, put kids into detention centers,
12:34and it has terrorized communities all over this country.
12:39If you want to bring ICE under control, if you want to move our country to comprehensive immigration reform
12:51and a path towards citizenship, then the only way you do that is to end Republican control over the Senate.
13:08And here's an issue that I have been working really hard on and scares the hell out of me.
13:15And that is, as many of you know, Trump just loves the big tech oligarchs.
13:22Oh, he loves Mr. Musk and Mr. Zuckerberg and Mr. Altman and all these billionaires,
13:28some of the richest people in the world, Mr. Ellison, all of these guys that are there in the White
13:33House with him.
13:34And Mr. Trump says, hmm, we cannot regulate AI at all. It's so wonderful. It's so great.
13:43He hopes that we'll have a data center in every community in America.
13:50He is unalterably opposed to any guardrails on AI.
13:57But what I know and what you know is data centers are causing massive environmental crises in community after community.
14:08You and I know that AI is moving to eviscerate our privacy rights.
14:19That AI is going to undermine democracy because when you turn on your internet, you go to your internet,
14:25you're not going to know what's true and not true with all of the deep fakes.
14:31Endangering the health and well-being of our children who, instead of relating to other kids,
14:37are going to have their companions as an AI bot.
14:41And lately you have also been seeing what is, in fact, very scary.
14:45And that is what some of the leading experts are telling me, is that if and when, and it is
14:53going to be a when,
14:55AI becomes smarter than human beings, there is a very real likelihood that AI will escape human control.
15:05And God only knows what happens then.
15:08And what the American people want is for us to hold these big tech oligarchs accountable.
15:20We want AI to work for working people and not just a handful of billionaires.
15:33And if that is what you want, it ain't going to happen with Republicans controlling the U.S. Senate.
15:41That I can assure you.
15:46Now what I have been saying for a long time is it is not good enough for us to just
15:56talk about the disaster that Donald Trump is.
15:59Most Americans know that.
16:01But what most working class and lower income people are saying, fine, you don't like Trump, that's great.
16:07That doesn't do anything for me in terms of health care, getting a decent paying job, getting housing.
16:13Do something for me and do it now. Stop the crap. Do something.
16:20So the struggle that we're having within the Democratic Party is that we need to convert that Democratic Party to
16:28do what Troy and I wanted to do,
16:30to become a party of working people, not of wealthy campaign contributors.
16:43So I am running around the country and others are doing the same for two goals.
16:48Number one, we've got to stop Trump.
16:51We've got to make sure Democrats gain control over the House and the Senate.
16:55But that is not enough.
16:58We've got to make sure that when Democrats do have control over the House and the Senate, they have the
17:04guts to stand up to their campaign contributors.
17:12And fight for an agenda that works for working families.
17:20So let me do something that a lot of politicians don't do very often. I'm going to tell you the
17:26truth.
17:30And the truth is that never before in American history have so few people owned so much wealth.
17:44Never before have we had the kind of income and wealth inequality that we have right now in which the
17:54top 1% owns more wealth than the bottom 93%.
18:02Never before have we seen a situation, been in a situation where the very, very rich are doing unbelievably well.
18:13You cannot imagine how much money the billionaire class is making every year, getting richer and richer.
18:20And meanwhile, at the same time, 60% of our people in the wealthiest country in the history of the
18:28world are living paycheck to paycheck.
18:32I grew up in a family that lived paycheck to paycheck.
18:35Troy grew up in a family, many of you did.
18:37And we all know what that is about.
18:39How do I buy groceries?
18:41How do I pay the rent?
18:43What happens if my car breaks down and it costs me $1,000 to get it fixed and I don't
18:49have the $1,000?
18:50How do I get to work?
18:51What happens if my mom needs some prescription drugs that we can't afford?
18:55Every day, tens of millions of people are living with that stress.
19:01And you know what stress does to you?
19:04It kills you.
19:05That's what it does.
19:06And there is a reason why working class people in America live six years shorter lives than the rich.
19:16And it's not only healthcare, as important as that is.
19:19It is just the stress of daily life.
19:22And that is something that the Democratic Party is going to finally have to deal with.
19:36Today we have the obscenity, and it is an obscenity, that one man, Ms. Elon Musk, owns, owns, listen to
19:47this.
19:47He owns more wealth himself than the bottom 53% of American households.
19:54Anybody think that vaguely makes sense?
19:58CEOs of large profitable corporations are now making 350 times more than their average worker.
20:09Now, obviously the guys on top always made more money than the worker.
20:13Nothing new about that.
20:15Used to be 20 times, 30 times, now 350 times.
20:21And over the past year, after receiving the largest tax break in history, fewer than 1,000 billionaires, not a
20:30lot of people, they saw their wealth increase by over $2.2 trillion.
20:36Got it?
20:38Fewer than 1,000 people became $2.2 trillion richer over the past year.
20:46And here's the important point also to make, which very few people talk about.
20:52What is going on now is simply an acceleration of what the economy has been doing to working people for
21:00the last 50 years.
21:03Over the last 50 years, according to the Rand Corporation, not exactly a socialist operation, nearly $80 trillion in wealth
21:16has been redistributed from the bottom 90% to the top 1%.
21:23Got it?
21:26$80 trillion over the last 50 years.
21:29And all of you know this.
21:31Despite a massive increase in worker productivity, and every worker in America today, with all of the technology, is far
21:38more productive than somebody who was doing similar type work 50, 55 years ago.
21:43The average American worker now is making $25 a week less than he or she did 53 years ago after
21:55adjusting for inflation.
21:58You all understand what I'm talking about, right?
22:00All right?
22:01So you got people.
22:02Imagine.
22:03You got all of this technology, all of this increased productivity, and in real inflation account of $4, the average
22:09person worse off than he or she was 53 years ago.
22:13I'll just give you one example.
22:14I grew up in a working class family.
22:18And my dad, we never made any money.
22:20We lived in a rent-controlled apartment.
22:22I grew up in Brooklyn.
22:23Rent-controlled apartment.
22:25But you know what was interesting?
22:26In my household and in the other households in my neighborhood, guess what?
22:32My father went out to work, worked every day, and my mom was able to stay home and raise the
22:38two boys.
22:39How many working class families do you know today where one person can go out and earn the money necessary
22:48to pay the bills?
22:49Not many.
22:51So what the hell is going on?
22:54Well, that has a lot to do with it.
22:56But we have all of this so-called progress, all of this great technology, and it now takes two breadwinners
23:06to support a family.
23:08And we worry, for good reason, that our kids might very well have a lower standard of living than we
23:16do.
23:17So the bottom line here, not a radical idea, is that maybe, just maybe, we should have an economy and
23:26a government that works for everybody, not just Musk and his billionaire friends.
23:42And when we talk about the power of the oligarchs, you know, I've been talking about that for a couple
23:48of years.
23:48Before I started talking about people, what the hell is an oligarch?
23:51People know what oligarchy is today.
23:54And it's not just this horrific maldistribution of income and wealth.
24:00It is power.
24:03All right?
24:04It is a handful of people who have enormous power over the economy, buying up more and more of the
24:11media, and also now have decided that they should own the political process in America.
24:20So what you are seeing, that as a result of this disastrous Citizens United Supreme Court decision, billionaires are now
24:31legally able to spend as much money as they want on super PACs to buy elections.
24:41Now, in Vermont and in Maine, you know, we've got a lot of small towns and we have town meetings.
24:46And what we believe democracy to be is one person, one vote.
24:51Right?
24:52You want to disagree with me?
24:54Not a problem.
24:54It's called democracy.
24:56But what we don't believe is that billionaires should be able to buy elections.
