A heated political debate erupted after Maine Senator Graham Platner sharply criticized former President Donald Trump, warning that the United States is “facing fascism” while expressing concern over rising inflation and economic uncertainty. Platner argued that Americans are struggling with higher costs and growing political divisions, while Trump supporters continue to defend his policies and leadership. The remarks have sparked intense reactions across the political spectrum, reigniting discussions about the economy, democracy, and the future direction of the country as the 2026 election cycle gains momentum.

00:00I firmly believe that we are facing fascism in this country.
00:02Historically, the only thing that's ever beaten that is a broad-based working-class coalition.
00:07We need to rebuild the old alliances of labor unions, community organizations, immigrant
00:12rights groups, civil rights groups, and political organizations to build power the old-fashioned
00:18way.
00:18Where organized money currently holds all the power, the only way we fight back is
00:24by organizing people.
00:25The great thing about the labor movement is that it never forgot how to do that.
00:30We are living in an America that, in many ways, we shouldn't be.
00:36We should not be living in a society where direct care workers are working 40-plus hours
00:43a week and still relying on SNAP or Medicaid, programs that Susan Collins has been happy
00:50to vote against or try to cut.
00:52We should not be living in an America where MSCA members who work as immigration social
01:00workers, case managers, support staff, where they are now bearing the brunt of a broken immigration
01:08system, while politicians like Susan Collins dump all the money into agencies like ICE so
01:15they can continue running around and terrorizing people instead of having a functional immigration
01:20system.
01:22We are living in a society which is the outcome of policy.
01:28We are living with the outcomes of decisions that are made by establishment politicians who,
01:34for decades, have been doing everything to serve those who donate the most money to them,
01:40have done everything to protect their own personal political power, and have done almost nothing
01:46to expand the services and to build a society that is actually going to provide for the average
01:51working person in this state and in this country.
01:54And I am very much looking forward to what we get to do next, together.
02:00The start of this is going to be building power.
02:02At the end of the day, I firmly believe that we are facing fascism in this country.
02:08Historically, the only thing that has ever beaten that is a broad-based working class coalition.
02:12We need to rebuild the old alliances of labor unions, community organizations, immigrant
02:18rights groups, civil rights groups, and political organizations to build power the old-fashioned
02:24way, from the ground up.
02:26Because in a society where money, where organized money currently holds all the power, the only
02:34way we fight back is by organizing people.
02:36The great thing about the labor movement is that it never forgot how to do that.
02:43It never forgot that real power comes from the ability of working folks to organize together
02:50and advocate for themselves.
02:52Historically, that is the only way we ever get to move the ball forward towards justice and equality.
