Sen. Bernie Sanders is sharply criticizing President Donald Trump over U.S. foreign policy and military spending. Sanders argues that Trump promised to end “endless wars” but says U.S. policy has not matched that promise. He also opposes additional U.S. funding for Israel, arguing that Americans are facing serious economic pressures at home.
The remarks put U.S. foreign policy, Israel aid, military spending and the debate over “endless wars” back in focus.

00:00Right behind them, right behind them, were the richest, some of the richest people in
00:06the world.
00:07That's who Trump works for.
00:12And our job is to make sure we elect a Congress that works for working people, not for the
00:20oligarchs.
00:21And it's great to be back at Bakersfield.
00:33Love you, too!
00:39What I want to do this evening is do something pretty unusual for a national politician.
00:47I'm going to tell you the truth.
00:50All right, how's that?
00:52It's going to be tough, but we'll deal with it.
00:56And the truth has a lot of bad news to it.
01:00I don't have to explain that to anybody in this room, but there's some good news, too.
01:06And the good news is that people like Randy Villegas are standing up and running all over
01:14this country, taking on the establishment and winning.
01:23And the reason for that gets us to the bad news.
01:27And the bad news is you are now living in a nation in which never before in American history
01:35have so few people have so much wealth and so much power.
01:43And never before have we seen a level of greed, of arrogance, and of irresponsibility.
01:54And what we're seeing in California, we're seeing in Vermont, we're seeing all across this people,
02:00all across this country, our people are standing up and saying to these oligarchs,
02:06enough is enough.
02:15So what does it mean?
02:17What does oligarchy mean?
02:19We have a fight oligarchy, fighting oligarchy event here.
02:23What it means is that to a large degree, your economy is controlled by a small number of billionaires
02:30who could care less about you.
02:33What do they want?
02:35Yeah, but their goal in life is to make as much money as they can and to assume as much
02:42power as they can.
02:44Some of you see the event that Trump had last week with the big tech guys?
02:51Right behind them, right behind them, were the richest, some of the richest people in the world.
02:57That's who Trump works for.
03:03And our job is to make sure we elect a Congress that works for working people, not for the oligarchs.
03:16So what we are seeing, what we're seeing in our country today, not just Bakersfield, California, not just Vermont, all
03:24over this country,
03:25you're seeing 60% of our people living paycheck to paycheck.
03:31Everybody here knows what living paycheck to paycheck is about.
03:35I grew up in a family, live paycheck to paycheck.
03:38My guess is many of you are living paycheck to paycheck.
03:41Right?
03:43So while 60%, the majority of our people are struggling, how am I going to afford to buy decent food
03:49for my kids?
03:50What happens if my mom can't afford prescription drugs?
03:54What happens if my car breaks down and it costs me $1,000 to get it fixed?
04:00How do I get to work if I can't come up with that $1,000, I lose my job?
04:06Every day, people are living with that stress.
04:10Nurses, what do stress do to people?
04:14All right, it gets them sick and kills them, right?
04:17All right.
04:17And all over this country, that's what people are dealing with.
04:21They're waking up in the morning and they're saying, how am I going to feed my kids?
04:26What happens if the landlord raises the rent by 20%?
04:30I can't afford to pay.
04:31I'm going to have to take my kids, move to another school.
04:33Where do I go?
04:34That's what ordinary Americans are experiencing.
04:38While the very richest people in this country have never in the history of America had it so good.
04:50So our job is twofold in this election.
04:54Number one is to put a stop to the ugly and destructive and dangerous actions of the Trump administration.
05:13And number two, equally important, which is why we have to elect people like Randy, is to demand, no ifs,
05:24buts and maybes, that when the Democrats control the House and the Senate, they're going to stand with the working
05:33class, with a bold agenda.
05:40It is too late.
05:42It is too late.
05:44It is too late for the same old, same old.
05:47All right.
05:48We need a bold agenda.
05:52That is going to improve the lives of working class people now.
06:03One of the first things we have got to do when we move forward with that agenda is to understand,
06:10not a radical idea, we believe in democracy.
06:13Right?
06:15We do not believe in authoritarianism.
06:19People fought and died, and I know people from this community in large numbers have been in the military, correct?
06:26People fought and died to defend democracy, the right to dissent, the right to elect the candidates who you feel
06:35will do the job for you.
06:36And one of the problems, we've got many struggles right now to protect democracy.
06:41Every day, Trump is doing something else, trying to make it harder for people to vote, attacking the media, et
06:46cetera, et cetera.
06:47But one of the key issues is we have a corrupt campaign finance system.
06:58Democracy means I come from a small state.
07:01And every March, we have what we call town meetings, just like this.
07:06People come together and they argue about how much they want to spend on the schools, how much they want
07:10to spend on the roads, right?
07:11They argue it out and they have votes.
07:13One person, one vote.
07:15That's called democracy.
07:17Democracy is not billionaires buying elections.
07:28And what Randy understands and I understand is that we have got to get rid of the Citizens United Supreme
07:35Court decision.
07:43We have got to get super PACs out of elections.
07:50And we've got to move toward public funding of elections.
07:57And then when we look at where we are as a country, we've got to say, what are the needs
08:03that people are dealing with?
08:06What are they facing?
08:07And what Randy understands and you understand and the overwhelming majority of the American people understand.
08:14Randy just said it a moment ago.
08:16Health care is not a privilege.
08:19It is a human right.
08:28Now, my understanding is that you have a congressman who in a district, this district,
08:36which has, as I understand it, the highest percentage of Medicaid recipients of any congressional district in America,
08:44he voted to throw 70,000 people off Medicaid in order to give a huge tax break to the 1%.
08:59So what Randy understands and what I understand is not only that we have to rescind what Trump did immediately,
09:09so those folks don't lose their Medicaid and that we continue protecting people in the Affordable Care Act,
09:15but we've got to go beyond that.
09:18Because, let me ask you a question.
09:21Are you ready for a question?
09:22Be honest.
09:24Is the American health care system working?
09:27Raise your hand if you think it is.
09:30And I see our nurses shaking their heads.
09:33They know it.
09:34The American health care system is broken.
09:37It is dysfunctional.
09:39It is cruel.
09:41Do you know that many, many thousands of people in this country go bankrupt because they have cancer?
09:49Can you imagine how terrible it is for a family to deal with cancer?
09:54They've got to worry about chemo theory, every other damn thing, getting somebody back on their feet,
09:59and then on top of that, they've got to worry about whether they're going to lose their homes and go
10:03bankrupt.
10:03How cruel and vulgar and unacceptable is that?
10:14All right, are you ready for another?
10:15We're in a school here.
10:18So I've got to ask you some questions.
10:19I want to see if you've been reading stuff.
10:23All right, here's the question.
10:25How many major countries on Earth do not guarantee health care to all of their citizens?
10:32Raise your hand.
10:34All right, you all know that?
10:36You're living in the only major country that does not guarantee health care to every man, woman, and child.
10:41A friend of mine was just telling me a story.
10:47A friend of mine was telling me he has a daughter who lives in France.
10:51He's married to a guy who works in France.
10:54They had a baby, and the baby had complications, was in the ICU for a few days.
10:59She had to stay in the hospital for two weeks.
11:02You know what the bill was when they got out?
11:05Right.
11:06And France probably spends half as much per person than we do, as we do, on health care.
11:11And the reason for all of that is not complicated, and our nurses probably know it better than anybody else.
11:18And that is that the function of the current health care system is not to provide quality care to all.
11:26It is to make huge profits for the insurance companies and the drug companies.
11:33And that's a system we've got to get rid of.
11:38And we need to go, and I know Randy agrees with me, we need to go to a Medicare for
11:44All single payer program.
11:54That's not a radical idea.
11:56It means, and I want you just to think about it for a moment, think about what it will mean
12:00for families all over this country
12:03not to worry that when they get sick, can they afford to go to the doctor, can they afford the
12:10co-payments, can they afford the crazy deductibles that are out there.
12:15All right.
12:15But you get health care, you walk in, and by the way, we need more doctors, we need more nurses.
12:21All right.
12:22All right.
12:25And, but to walk into a doctor's office when you are sick and get the care you need without worrying
12:31about whether you can afford it or not.
12:33Do you know what that will do to the mental health of the people in this country?
12:37The stress level.
12:46And the other thing that Randy knows, that I know, that you know, you know,
12:51when Trump runs for president and he said, we are going to put an end to endless wars.
13:00And like so many other things, he lied.
13:04He lies every day.
13:06I honestly, I honestly believe that he may not know the difference between the truth and a lie.
13:12I mean, I think he is one of these guys who's a pathological liar.
13:17All right.
13:17So what happens is he starts a war that was 100% unnecessary, started on a lie.
13:27We have lost 19 American service members.
13:31Thousands of people in Iran and Lebanon, Israel have been killed as a result of this.
13:39And meanwhile, back home and around the world, we're seeing gas prices rising like crazy.
13:46People can't afford it.
13:48People can't afford to fill up their gas tanks.
13:50Food prices are going up, et cetera, et cetera.
13:52But Randy understands, and I understand.
13:56It's at a time when so many people are hurting, we're not going to spend hundreds of billions of dollars
14:01on endless wars.
14:09And we're not going to give another nickel to the extremist government of Israel to continue their assault on the
14:17Palestinian people.
14:33And Randy understands also.
14:37Randy understands, he just said it a few minutes ago.
14:39And my father, I'm the son of an immigrant, came from Poland.
14:48Randy said it better than I.
14:50It's immigrants who have built this country.
14:55And the idea that we have ICE agents breaking down doors, arresting kids, arresting people who have worked in this
15:04country for 10, 20, 30 years,
15:06trying to raise their families, trying to educate their kids, throwing these people into detention centers,
15:12sometimes throwing them out of the country into places they never even knew about, is outrageous, unacceptable.
15:19And what we have got to do is move this country as soon as possible to comprehensive immigration reform and
15:29a path toward citizenship.
15:31Not . . . .
15:43All right, there's another issue I'd like your views on.
15:46And that is the issue of AI.
15:48You guys following that?
15:52All right, give me your . . .
15:53Somebody stand up.
15:54Tell me what they think about AI.
15:55Raise a hand.
15:59Okay.
16:03All right.
16:04All right.
16:05Further . . .
16:06Yes, ma'am.
16:11All right.
16:11Okay.
16:13Okay.
16:13Oh, shh.
16:13Okay.
16:15Okay.
16:15Gentleman, I would be loud, sir.
16:16Yep.
16:19Good.
16:20Okay.
16:21Yep.
16:21Stand up.
16:26All right.
16:28A.I., woman right here.
16:35Okay.
16:38All right, let me ask you a question.
16:40If somebody proposes a data center for this area, what do you guys think?
16:48All right.
16:50All right.
16:52This is an issue I've been working hard on, so I'll just be as honest as I can and tell
16:59you what we're trying to do.
17:01First of all, who is pushing A.I. and robotics?
17:08Most of you guys getting out there every day say we've got to move this country forward aggressively in A
17:13.I.
17:13Probably not.
17:14Who's pushing it?
17:16The wealthiest people in the world.
17:19People like Mr. Musk, Mr. Bezos, Mr. Zuckerberg, Mr. Ellison.
17:26Okay.
17:27And do you think those guys are staying up nights worrying about the impact of A.I. on working families?
17:34Okay.
17:35That's issue number one.
17:38Issue number two.
17:39And again, A.I. is moving so quickly, nobody really has a full understanding or can really definitively predict where
17:47it's going.
17:48All right?
17:49But, you know, I talk to a lot of folks.
17:51There is a real likelihood, not everybody agrees, that A.I. will eliminate many, many millions of jobs in the
18:02coming years.
18:03All right?
18:04People, people like Musk and others basically say that within a few years, A.I. will be able to do
18:12anything that you do better than you can do it.
18:16Okay?
18:17All right.
18:18All right.
18:19And then you're looking at people like Mr. Bezos.
18:24You all know Mr. Bezos?
18:25Guy who owns Amazon.
18:27He is investing $100 billion to automate factories in the U.S. and around the world.
18:36What does that mean?
18:38Who's going to do the work in the Amazon warehouses and in automobile factories in years to come?
18:45Robots.
18:46That's right.
18:47And probably pick the crops as well.
18:50And probably get involved in healthcare as well.
18:53All right?
18:53So you've got the economic impact of A.I. wiping out millions of jobs.
19:00I'll give you one example.
19:01All right?
19:02Anybody here been in a driverless vehicle?
19:04Yes.
19:04Okay.
19:06You go to San Francisco, they're all over the place.
19:09Austin, Texas, all over the place.
19:11If we do not rethink this issue, the likelihood is that in 10 years, truck drivers will no longer have
19:20a job.
19:21Those big trucks will be run by driverless vehicles.
19:26Bus drivers, cab drivers, Uber drivers, all driverless vehicles.
19:32Some five, six million jobs in transportation out the window.
19:36And many entry-level jobs that young people have.
19:39Graduating college will be gone.
19:41So the economic impact is huge.
19:43What about privacy rights?
19:47What about Flock?
19:48You know about Flock?
19:53Are you all enthusiastic?
19:54Do you think you want a camera around the corner there?
19:57All right.
19:58In other words, there is, with Flock and with other mechanisms, people will know every website you visited,
20:05every phone call you made, every text that you sent.
20:08They will know where you are going, who you are meeting with.
20:12All right.
20:13So we are looking at the possibility evisceration of privacy rights in America.
20:19I'll give you another example.
20:21In democracy, we live in a democracy.
20:24You know, people argue about, you know, what they agree with this, they don't agree with that.
20:28You are going to see, and you're beginning to see, people on the internet saying things that sound outrageous,
20:34but you know what?
20:35It turns out it wasn't the person you thought saying it.
20:39That's happened to me already.
20:40All right.
20:42And it happens, it's happening increasingly, all over.
20:46That's called deep fakes.
20:48So a deep fake is that it's getting better and better.
20:51You will have a very difficult time determining whether the person who's talking is that person or not.
20:58And that is a real threat to democracy, among many other things.
21:02And then there is, somebody raised up what we call the existential threat.
21:06Okay?
21:08So I talked to a guy, his name is Dr. Jeffrey Hinton.
21:11Does that name mean anything to anybody?
21:13Hinton is a Nobel Prize winner in physics who is considered to be one of the godfathers,
21:19one of the original developers of AI.
21:21He's been working on this for many, many decades.
21:23And what he says is, look, there is no question, given the rapid speed that AI is moving,
21:29every day it is becoming more and more sophisticated, capable of doing more and more things.
21:35So there's no question in his mind that the day will come when AI will be smarter than human beings.
21:43And then the question is whether human beings will be able to control AI
21:50or that AI will become independent of human control.
21:54You may have all read about this hugging face business.
21:57All right.
21:58And they hacked into the Australian healthcare system.
22:01All right.
22:02So what we worry about is an independent AI, independent of human control, what that could mean.
22:09Could they destroy the world's financial system or worse?
22:13All right.
22:14You add all of that together, you got, as somebody said, a technology which is acknowledged by the people who
22:21own the industry to be potentially dangerous.
22:24It is moving forward very, very rapidly.
22:29They don't know where it's going.
22:30They don't know whether they could control it.
22:34Within that reality, it seems to me that we should place a pause on advanced AI development.
22:52All right.
22:52We've gone over a lot of stuff.
22:54Let me bring it back to where we are today.
22:58You are living in an extremely dangerous moment in American history.
23:05And you all know, we've gone through some of it, you know it all better than I do.
23:09But here is the good news.
23:11The good news starting off last year with the election of Zaron Mandani in New York City.
23:25Moving to elections in New Jersey, in the Midwest, right here with Randy taking on an establishment candidate and winning.
23:37What you are seeing is that people are now supporting progressive candidates who are prepared to stand with the working
23:45class and take on the oligarchy.
23:47That's what you are seeing.
23:53So let me conclude by saying this.
23:56Number one, please do everything you can between now and election day to make sure that Randy is your next
24:04congressman.
24:09And by the way, do everything you can to see that we win on Proposition 40,
24:13because the billionaire should start paying their fair share of taxes.
24:22And let us never forget, we have had difficult moments in American history before.
24:28I absolutely believe, and I go all over the country, and I see great people like yourselves who have a
24:35very different vision of where our country could go than Trump and his friends.
24:42We are the richest country in the history of the world.
24:44There is no reason why every man, woman, and child cannot have a decent standard of living.
24:50There is no reason why we cannot maintain a vibrant democracy where we all participate.
24:56We can disagree with each other, but we don't have to have a democracy owned by billionaires.
25:01We should be working for world peace, not more and more bloody wars to kill people.
25:12And that is where the American people are.
25:15There is nothing that I have said.
25:16Medicare for all now supported by 63% of the American people.
25:21Ending endless wars supported by the overwhelming majority of the American people.
25:25The American people want change.
25:34They want real change.
25:36All right?
25:37And my job and Randy's job is to bring about that change.
25:42So I just want to thank all of you very much for coming out tonight.
25:46I look forward to returning in the not too distant future.
25:49Take care.
25:49Keep up the fight.
