⚔️ What happened when a Roman army stopped marching?
They didn't simply pitch tents.
They could begin building.
Roman soldiers constructed fortified marching camps using defensive ditches, earth ramparts and wooden stakes. Specialist engineers and craftsmen helped plan and execute more technical work, while ordinary legionaries supplied enormous amounts of labor.
The Roman military also participated in the construction of roads, bridges, forts and other infrastructure across the empire.
This ability to rapidly organize men, tools and materials was one of the foundations of Roman military power.
