00:00Adam, thanks for coming on, man.
00:01We really appreciate it.
00:02What's going on, guys?
00:03Well, we're feeling kind of good.
00:05It's a pants-off dance-off here because we're hearing that we're getting
00:08some important players back on the Patriots.
00:10What are you hearing?
00:11Well, I think I've been saying to you guys for a while that A.J. Brown
00:15was doing well, and I haven't heard anything different.
00:19Now, I don't know that that's going to be enough to get him active on Sunday.
00:23Well, my guess would be it is.
00:26But, look, he's not far away.
00:29If he doesn't play this week, and I think there's a chance
00:32he's going to play this week.
00:33That's awesome.
00:34And, obviously, I think Christian Gonzalez, basically straight –
00:38Yeah, he's in.
00:40What are you hearing about Will Campbell?
00:43That doesn't sound as promising.
00:44I think that sounds like it could be a little bit of time.
00:47But I'll also say that sometimes offensive linemen, they're pretty tough.
00:50They often play through a lot.
00:52So, I don't know how that one won't play out just yet.
00:55Adam, I'm curious if you've heard anything about the Week 8 matchup
00:59between the Eagles and Commanders.
01:00It's supposed to be a Sunday night football game,
01:02but you can start flexing games after, I guess, for that window,
01:06particularly after Week 5.
01:08But, you know, the Eagles are 2-3, Commanders 1-3.
01:12Do you anticipate that game getting flexed?
01:14Do you look at some of the other games on the slate?
01:17There's not a lot of really good games to choose from.
01:19How do you think that will play out?
01:22Is that unusual to be flexed that early in the season?
01:25Look, I haven't seen the flex schedule.
01:27I don't know how many times NBC is allowed to flex.
01:29And the other thing I would say is those are two big markets.
01:32And Washington's still alive.
01:34So, I guess, you know, you don't see a network flex out of two NFC East markets like that.
01:44Yeah.
01:44Very often.
01:45I think I'd be surprised, but I don't know the intermachinations of how that's going to work with NBC.
01:51Adam, we follow the Bills here very closely, obviously, and they had a big win,
01:55but the defense still looked like it has some problems Monday night.
01:58Do you think Buffalo will be active as we get closer to the trade deadline for any help on that
02:03side?
02:03I think all Super Bowl teams, Super Bowl contenders, are always looking to be buyers.
02:09It doesn't mean that they make any moves, but they're going to be checking into a lot of different players.
02:15Just how they work it.
02:16Buffalo is always checking to people.
02:18Would I be surprised if Buffalo made a move?
02:20No.
02:20They know they have an opportunity, a chance.
02:23They're going to do everything they can to maximize that.
02:26Doesn't mean that they want it making a deal.
02:27If the cost is too prohibitive, they wouldn't.
02:29But they'll be on the phone making calls.
02:32Do you see the Patriots making any calls?
02:34I was thinking specifically running back with Travion Henderson being out,
02:38but there might be some other positions that I'm not aware of.
02:40Do you see the Patriots being active?
02:43I think they'll make calls.
02:44I think that they felt like they were pretty good at running back.
02:48I felt like last year they could have done that, and they didn't.
02:51Right?
02:51So, you know, we'll see how that goes.
02:54But to me, they'll be making calls, and we'll see whether that translates into any actual players.
03:01How about the state of the Jets, Adam?
03:03I know you're down in New York quite a bit.
03:05You have the pulse of that city.
03:06What should we know about the Jets approaching this matchup on Sunday?
03:11They have been improved.
03:13I think it's a situation where I think they're playing better football.
03:18There's a lot of good young talent there.
03:20They're not there yet, but they're on their way.
03:23David Bailey, their number one pick, is really making an impact at three sacks last week.
03:33And, look, I think that they're a better football team.
03:36The Jets have really struggled to win in recent years.
03:38I'm not telling you they're going to win on Sunday, but I'm just saying, like, this team's tougher, feistier, more
03:43talented, and they're a tougher out.
03:47Adam, I'm going a little bit off the grid on this question.
03:49I'm just curious because you send out tweets all day long, every day.
03:53Have you ever done a deep dive analysis on your Twitter account?
03:56Like, how many tweets do you average a day or a year?
03:59And I was always curious, do you do the tweeting yourself, or do you have some kind of technology where
04:04you can do the audio thing?
04:05Does someone do it for you?
04:07How does putting tweets out work for you?
04:09I put out all my own stuff, all my own stuff, 99.9% of it.
04:15And the only ones I don't put out are sometimes if we have a feature that runs on ESPN and
04:20we want to post it, I want to post it.
04:23I'll say to the social media team, I don't know how to reduce the video to get it poked.
04:26Can you help me out there?
04:27Short of that, I'm posting everything.
04:30Now watch.
04:31Now I'll get hacked and somebody will post something.
04:35It reminds me of the story.
04:36It reminds me of this is a true story.
04:38True story.
04:39There was a time, John Elway was always very fascinated about how things worked.
04:44And so he's like, do you write the headlines in the story?
04:46I'm like, I write the stories, John.
04:47I don't write the headlines.
04:49But if it's in the story, I wrote it.
04:52And he's like, okay.
04:55Well, literally that was on a Friday.
04:58And on Sunday, they played the Chargers and they won the game.
05:01And me and the fellow writers of the Denver Post had always collaborated in a notebook.
05:05And I opened up the newspaper on Monday morning.
05:07And the headline was, Elway gets a nipple ring by Adam Schefter.
05:13And I was like, what the hell is this?
05:16And I start reading it.
05:17It's got my name on it.
05:19So like, I don't understand.
05:21I thought somebody sent it in after the game.
05:23John Elway was sporting a nipple ring.
05:24And he said he lost a bet to his wife, Janet.
05:27And I'm like, this is bizarre.
05:29Okay.
05:29And I guess somebody sent it in.
05:31And so I go out to the complex like 7 in the morning.
05:34And I'm waiting in the players' parking lot.
05:35And John pulls up.
05:36And I see him.
05:37And he sees me.
05:38And he does a beeline right towards me.
05:39He's like, did you write that?
05:41And I said, no.
05:42He said, I thought you told me, Friday, you write everything.
05:45I'm like, I didn't write it.
05:46Well, it became like a whole thing that was investigated by the Columbia Journalism Review.
05:51Somehow, some way, somebody hacked into the Denver Post system and filed that.
05:56And they included it.
05:57And it was wild.
05:58So I don't know how I got there, but I did.
06:01What famous NFL coaches have nipple rings, Adam Schefter?
06:06I'd have to do some deep dive investigating to find that out.
06:11All right.
06:11So I want to ask you about, like, you talk to all the people, you know, all around the league.
06:15And I want to find out, how has the perception of the Patriots changed over the last couple of weeks?
06:21Are people buying into it?
06:23I think the one thing that shifted, the one thing that shifted clearly,
06:28is there was this big conversation slash narrative about what's wrong with Drake May.
06:34Has he regressed?
06:35What's going wrong?
06:37Is he going to fall back into being a bad quarter?
06:41I don't tell you, you guys lived it, I'm sure.
06:44Right?
06:45Yeah.
06:46And that conversation seems to have gone by the wayside for the time being.
06:49Like, he's coming off two great games.
06:51The game he played Sunday was about as well as he's ever played.
06:54And I don't hear too many people questioning and wondering about how effective and good Drake May is right now.
07:00So I think that's where the shift has come with this team.
07:04And if the quarterback is playing the way he did the last two games, then they're going to win a
07:09lot of games and be a formidable team.
07:12If he's playing the way that he did earlier in the year, they're not.
07:15And, you know, football, for as complex as it is, it's often that simple, right?
07:20If the quarterback's playing great like he has, the team is often going to be very prosperous and benefit from
07:29that.
07:29All right, Adam, we've got some listeners who have some questions for you.
07:32They left them on a request line here, our little recorded line.
07:34And so we've got two here.
07:37Stiz, let it roll if you don't mind.
07:38Hey, Adam, this is Larry from New Hampshire.
07:41After the first five weeks of the NFL, who's your most disappointing team and who's your most surprising team?
07:49Well, Larry from New Hampshire, I appreciate the question.
07:51I like this feature, like taking questions from the callers.
07:54That's pretty cool.
07:55Hell yeah.
07:55I would say that the most disappointing team has to be the Los Angeles Chargers.
08:00Nobody would have thought that they would be winless at this point in time, playing the way they are.
08:04But that's where they're at.
08:06And I think San Francisco, like there were some bad vibes on that team.
08:11Kyle Shanahan's car accident, the owner of Jed York's arrest, injuries mounting up, and here they are still unbeaten, which
08:19is pretty impressive to me.
08:20Yeah, Brock Purdy, I still don't think until this season he's gotten the respect he deserves.
08:26But now I think he's like number one right now if you go to any of the betting sites for
08:31MVP and absolutely deserves it.
08:32But he is playing out of his mind right now.
08:35Yeah, they've been very impressive to me.
08:37Yep, they have.
08:38All right, let's go to our next and final question.
08:41Hello, Mr. Shafter.
08:42My name is Mark, and I had a quick question for you.
08:45I was wondering, in all the years of you covering the NFL, who is your favorite athlete that you've covered?
08:57Well, I'll say this, and I'm not just saying this because of who I'm talking to, but I always got
09:07a kick out of dealing with Tom Brady.
09:10In the limited interactions that we did have, you know, we interacted with some of the Best Buddies events in
09:18the Boston area, Super Bowls when he was a free agent.
09:24And honestly, what a nice guy.
09:26Like, what a nice guy.
09:27He really is.
09:28Like, that would be one of the more notable interactions.
09:31Like, it's fun interacting with some people that have made such a mark on the game.
09:36You know, Peyton Manning has been unbelievable.
09:37And he used to text, you know, Chris Mortensen some of the things he used to work on post-playing
09:43days, and even probably during playing days.
09:45And now sometimes, you know, I'll get texts from Peyton.
09:47Hey, here's my new show.
09:48Take a look.
09:48Take a look.
09:49And I think he likes to get that feedback the way he used it for more from me.
09:53So, you know, you're talking about two of the greatest quarterbacks, players in NFL history.
09:58That always feels like it's meaningful.
10:02You know what, Adam?
10:02It wasn't until, like, near the end of his playing career that even us as Patriots fans knew much about
10:09Tom Brady because he was kind of a nice guy.
10:12Yeah, he is.
10:13Well, can you, I mean, Ted played with him, so he knows that.
10:15But is there anything you can tell us about Tom Brady that maybe the public doesn't know about him?
10:22I don't know that.
10:23But, I mean, I think the public knows, you know, a lot about him.
10:25But, again, I just stick to my initial.
10:27I think he's a genuinely nice person, like nicer than people realize.
10:33Like, I was one of those Best Buddy events, and he's a star, and here he is at these events
10:38all weekend interacting with kids.
10:39So genuine, so real, so nice.
10:42And that always stayed with me.
10:44Him and Guy Fieri hanging out, having a good time with those things.
10:46Right, Adam Schefter?
10:47Yeah.
10:48And sometimes I'd be lurking in the background.
10:52All right, Adam Schefter, great stuff.
10:53Thanks for coming on with us.
10:54We really appreciate it, Adam.
10:55And I like those calls.
10:57That's a nice little feature.
10:58We'll keep doing it, Adam.
10:59We'll keep doing it, buddy.
11:00Thanks, Adam.
11:01Thank you, guys.
11:01Have a great day, Adam.
11:02We'll keep doing it, Adam.
