00:19race day morning at round two of the formula one season the malaysian grand prix and we have more
00:24scorchingly hot weather as we get set for the final round of qualifying to set the grid for
00:29the malaysian grand prix hi everybody i'm bob barsha you just saw david hobson steve matchup
00:34being chauffeured into the racetrack sipang just outside the kuala lumpur international airport
00:41the first session of the new two-part formula one qualifying format took place yesterday in
00:45case you missed it here on speed channel here's what unfolded
00:51young anthony davidson last year's friday test driver for the bar honda team was called in
00:56to replace the ailing takuma sato and he was third 15th fastest that was only three spots behind
01:01michael schumacher only able to manage 13th quickest time in last year's ferrari llano truly was looking
01:07for his second consecutive front row start and he held provisional pole much to the delight of his
01:12toyota crew until fernando alonso set a blistering lap at one minute 32.582 seconds to take over
01:19provisional pole that's a half second under michael schumacher's pole from a year ago then his teammate
01:24the australian winner giancarlo fisi kella managed the third best time meaning the renault driver's
01:29sandwich truly's toyota and he said to a friend i missed it by just that much here's a look at
01:35the
01:35times from yesterday's first round and you'll note no ferraris in the top ten david no they are not
01:41look at that pretty close to the sharp end of the grid there kimmy reichner having a good run in
01:45the
01:45mclaren mark weber not a bad run too in the williams bmw montoya a bit dissatisfied with his seventh
01:49spot heid felt way off the pace of mark weber david cool does still looking strong in the red bull
01:55car
01:55michael schumacher way down there in 13th now we're catching up with the action in the second round
02:00of qualifying we go in reverse order from slowest to fastest on the first day first man on track
02:06christian albers of the netherlands in the minority ran a 140.432
02:12in saturday's first round and a 142.569 on race fuel 2.1 seconds slower than his saturday time
02:21no doubt due in part to this well he got wide there but of course he made his name in
02:27fame as a saloon car driver so johnny bit there here's his teammate patrick freesacker
02:32did a 139.268 on saturday he was 2.7 seconds slower on race fuel for the lap at 141
02:40.918 still
02:42pipped his teammate by 1.8 seconds then tiago montero of portugal suffered from a bad cold two
02:50weeks ago in australia he's healthy now he is driving that jordan toyota a 137.856 yesterday a 140.106
02:59today montero moved to provisional pole that brings you up to date we'll pick up the first
03:04driver for a complete lap noreen karnikeyan in the jordan when we return
03:11speed channel's coverage of the fia formula one world championship is brought to you by fosters
03:16fosters australian premier and by new high-endurance oils from mope the oil that's changing oil
03:39and by new high-end karnikeyan of india in the jordan toyota
03:50he is on the clock left of your screen his total time including yesterday's first round
03:56plus that first intermediate in today's second round and as you see it's green which means he
04:00is ahead of the provisional pole sitter currently his teammate tiago montero of portugal
04:06get a bit wider some of these overhead shots show you just how wide this track is over 70 feet
04:11wide
04:12most of the way around it is very wide and the drivers get in on the power incredibly early which
04:20puts a lot of strain onto the rear tires because not only are the drivers trying to accelerate and
04:26put the loads longitudinally through the tires but the car is still sliding sideways as well so you've got
04:31the lateral load through and remember these tires have got to last the whole of the race distance and
04:39qualify all together now a tire ripper kardikeyan did a 137.806 on light fuel in the first round of
04:48qualifying
04:51kardikeyan the first indian to make it into formula one racing a long way to go to match the best
04:57ever qualifying performance by a driver from the asian mainland that would be prince bira of thailand
05:03right back in the 50s i watched prince bira race at silverstone for my very first ever race
05:10of qualified fifth once there you see the numbers on kardikeyan who moves to provisional pole 139.850 on
05:17race fuel for a total of 317.656 once again this year the first and second round lap times are
05:28added together to determine the driver's place on the grid now here comes the 97 world champion and
05:33a man under tremendous pressure this weekend jack villeneuve in the sauber boy he is under pressure
05:40just everywhere you read people keep on thinking about alternative drivers already for him in his car
05:46i mean it's a bit tough on the guy the rumor is that peter sauber who owns this team and
05:50built it up
05:50he's talking with mclaren about the availability of uh austrian alex verts well he was about a second
05:59slow than his teammate in australia last week and we'll have to see how he flies a lot quicker than
06:04kardikeyan
06:05but then he should be that's right 134.887 from the canadian in yesterday's first round
06:24this evening's onboard this has got a lot of good sweeping turns this is turn nine a pretty tight
06:30left-hand hairpin it's got a lot of everything this track hasn't it slow speed stuff fast stuff medium
06:37speed those huge long straights then we're coming up to a terrific left right swoop here you what
06:47really good corner so that you come out if you got to break hard for this last corner
06:50you want to get this one right well this is the last one but one because look at that straight
06:55in
06:55front of you nearly a mile long point out of a mile long you really want to leg it down
06:58there
07:02the drivers have been averaging about 2.3 seconds slower on their second lap with race fuel let's see
07:11what villeneuve does 312.995 that computes to a 138.108 a big cap we'll be back
07:26welcome back to final qualifying for the malaysian grand prix later today on speed channel i'm bob
07:33barsha with david hobbs and steve matchett and this is the end anthony davidson promoted to the race
07:39team to replace the ailing takuma sato took ill with what is suspected to be a viral infection he has
07:45a
07:45temperature of 102. they put him in the hospital and called up davidson who had just arrived here
07:51in malaysia on thursday night severely jet lagged put in a good day on saturday a lap of 134.866
07:58here he is on race fuel now trying to find his place on the grid for his first grand prix
08:04race start
08:08since 2003 he ran a couple of races for minority replacing malaysian alex young ironically enough
08:15spun off in both of them believe these time differences japs between the first session
08:20yesterday and the session we're seeing right now very interesting because it gives us a a good idea
08:27a good baseline of fuel what these cars are running and bobby was saying earlier on that there's quite a
08:34difference in villner's lap times like 3.3 seconds three point seconds well last year i'm thinking back
08:41sauber had this um option to run very long in that first stint to the race and i'm wondering whether
08:50or not we're seeing exactly that again because 3.6 is a lot of time difference and then the weather
08:54conditions remain exactly the same pretty much identical to yesterday of course the car's not allowed
09:00with just wing or anything from that first qualifying session to this second qualifying session and
09:07davidson goes to provisional polls who likes it 311.890 total that's a lap at 137.024 2.2 seconds
09:16slower
09:17than on light tanks yeah terrific lift lift mix two well done good lap nice tidy lap a second ahead
09:29of jv which obviously gave them a lot of pleasure to say tidy tidy it was a tidy lap around
09:47now this is rubens barriquello in the ferrari the updated 2004 chassis
09:57the utterings of the ferrari team are taking on a certain intensity as they talk about their 2005 car
10:04currently being tested back at home base in italy it's beginning to look like ferrari might need that
10:10weapon sooner than expected a couple of times ferrari of course have come back with the previous
10:15year's car and have done incredibly well in the first few races i.e last year in australia for a
10:20start off this year has not worked out that way at all it hasn't but rory burn in ferrari's defense
10:28if anyone should need to defend for a hurry has been saying you know the new car it may not
10:34look
10:34radically different but boy we've made a huge amount of changes to the car on suspension geometry and the
10:40ability to change geometry very quickly and from track to track as well to try and preserve the
10:47tires will all be about preserving the tires throughout the race distance
10:55ferrari said they saw some not loopholes in the regulations but areas of the regulations they
11:00wanted to exploit fully did not want to rush getting the new car out but it certainly is costing them
11:07at
11:07the moment however i have to say that the bridgestone tires the dry weather tires are no match for
11:12mission well of course they're a big disadvantage they're the only people using it really flashing
11:22across the line goes the ferrari 311 502 will happen 137.340 not quicker than davidson
11:43welcome back to the sipang circuit in malaysia rubens barakello is the provisional pole
11:48center for the malaysian grand prix he was seven tenths quicker than anthony davidson yesterday three
11:54tenths slower today on the lap completed just before we went to break but on aggregate he was
12:00quicker than davidson's bau honda now on track the man who was quickest in friday's second practice
12:05session felipe masa we've got his sponsor the malaysian national oil company petronas
12:12some pretty easy pump by going with light tanks and being the quickest guy in the session he did
12:16134.151 in the first round of qualifying let's see what he can do here this is ferrari power
12:32in fact the two ferraris despite being well down the order in the first round were the two quickest
12:39cars in a straight line followed by the sauber well if sauber are following the same policy with
12:51nasa as we think they may be with wilner by running a lot of fuel we should see quite a
12:56discrepancy between
12:57that first session time yesterday because as you said last year they started that especially with
13:04giacala fischichella who had some very good results using that policy at one stop yeah
13:12311 884 it's a 137.733 second lap marichella was 3.2 seconds slower than his first round time
13:25on race fuel and the gap here for masa 3.6 seconds yeah now this is planned exactly
13:33what you were saying david that would there is potentially with that time difference in the
13:39lap consumption around here fuel consumption per lap probably about 25 laps of fuel on board sauber
13:44and that's the point in case you're wondering why i'm harping on the difference between their
13:48first and second round times that's how we compute unofficially how much fuel they have in the car
13:54because that's the fuel they will start the grand prix with later on today yeah as in every engineer up
14:00and
14:00down the pit lane of course we'll be doing exactly the same punching the calculator looking at the
14:03times between the first qualifying session all on low fuel weather conditions exactly the same and the
14:09same tires cross-referencing that to the times we're producing now in the second session it will give a
14:15it will give a good idea providing providing will you take into account if anybody runs wide or that sort
14:21of
14:21thing and the potential for somebody sandbagging a little bit we should have a good baseline with exactly how
14:28many laps these guys are capable of running off michael schumacher getting his wheel on the curb well
14:32and truly on the curb almost over the back of it there coming out of turn four
14:38quicker than his teammate rubens barricallo in the first sector now with with the bridgestone
14:44tires not working as well as the michelin tires at this point of the season and we know that the
14:50ferrari his last year's car is not as quick as the 2005 specification cars up and down the pit lane
14:57i would anticipate these guys as well to not have a dramatic increase in this second session
15:04it's again i just keep referring back to rory burns saying tires it must conserve the tires and
15:10that's what the drivers have been saying as well and anyone that is capable of
15:13making best use of those tires even if it's costing them in the first stage of the race
15:18will really reap the rewards and the benefits of that careful driving in the latter stages of the
15:24race when people start to fall off ferrari of michael schumacher in a straight line 189.5 miles per
15:33hour 3 11 633 means his second lap was a 137.561 for a three and a half second time
15:40difference friday to saturday
15:44another car heavy on fuel which suggests they'll try to go deeper into the race than their rivals
15:49and try to make up time between pit stops with fast laps when the tanks are light
15:57here comes david coulthard in the red bull
16:00well what a revelation he was in australia just a couple of a point exactly
16:05coming up to fourth
16:09whoops now one of these cars last year in the hands of mark weber of course qualified second
16:14probably the generation before this the jaguar last year mark weber qualified second but then
16:19had absolutely dreadful ways
16:23david coulthard running this year on a contract that specifies not a big fat formula one superstar type
16:29salary but a certain number of dollars per point one in the world championship well he was quicker there
16:36than that rubens barricado or michael schumacher michael schumacher got the quickest first sector so far but
16:43He easily eclipsed that by half a second.
16:46Might also point out he is paying his own expenses to the races this year.
16:51I heard his manager, Martin Brundle, mention that little point.
16:55Talking points, if he scores another three World Championship points,
16:59he will then surpass Nigel Mantle as Britain's most prolific point scorer in Grand Prix racing.
17:05And yet without the World Championship to call his own.
17:08He sees about a second ahead on aggregate.
17:13A neat little battle between the Red Bull teammates.
17:15The vastly experienced Coulthard, just marginally slower,
17:20about a tenth away from his teammate, the sophomore, Christian Kling.
17:28Christian Kling, still the youngest driver in Grand Prix racing, still only 22.
17:33To the line comes Coulthard, 3.097.00.
17:38That's a 135.891 second lap.
17:42Time difference from the first lap, just 2.1 seconds.
17:45Less fuel in the car.
17:50Live later today here on Speed Channel, I'm Bob Varsha with David Hobbs and Steve Matchett.
17:55This is the Red Bull Cosworth with Christian Kling of Austria.
17:59His second season of Formula One.
18:01Edged his teammate David Coulthard by a tenth in the first round of qualifying with a 133.724.
18:07Let's see what he can do now.
18:13Temperatures are warming.
18:15Track temperature 118 degrees, air temperature 97.
18:19Just a little bit quicker than David Coulthard there.
18:31Kling was supposed to get out of the car after the next round of the World Championship two weeks from
18:37now in Bahrain
18:38in favor of last year's Formula 3000 champion, Vd'Antonio Luzzi.
18:43Racing his home country of Italy, the Grand Prix of San Marino at Imola.
18:48We'll see whether that happens or not.
18:50What's the word they use?
18:51Competition?
18:52Positive competition.
18:54Positive competition.
18:57Positive competition.
19:00No doubt Christian Kling thinks it's positive to be a stint.
19:03This is our penultimate corner.
19:0514 down this long straight.
19:08Longest grandstand I think in the world there on the left.
19:11Nearly over eight tenths of a mile long.
19:25309.589.
19:26That's his second lap at 135.865.
19:30Just a couple of hundredths quicker than his teammate David Coulthard.
19:35Okay mate T1, you are two and a half tenths in front of DC.
19:42You can take it reasonably easier in your in-lapartique because you've got still quite a bit of time.
19:48That's two and a half tenths on aggregate.
19:51Three one hundredths of a second on that second lap and a 2.1 second margin between first and second
19:57lap.
19:58I should, I feel I should qualify that longest grandstand in the world by probably saying the longest covered grandstand
20:04in the world.
20:04I don't know if there's somebody's gonna be emailing this momentarily.
20:08Grandstand at the...
20:12Churchill Downs or something.
20:14Yeah.
20:15There comes Jensen Button.
20:18A 133.616 in yesterday's first round.
20:21Remember both BAR Hondas had new engines installed after the first round of the world championship two weeks ago in
20:28Australia.
20:28But because they did not reach the checkered flag in that race, they could change engines without penalty.
20:35That's a loophole in the rules that has since been closed by the rules makers.
20:41Yeah, they were both called in on the last lap and as you say the rules makers have closed that
20:46little loophole.
20:47Good first section though for Jensen Button.
20:49I don't blame BAR at all for exploiting the regulations.
20:53Not at all.
20:53That's what, you know, that's the name of the game.
20:56Not Cricketile Boy.
20:57Well, I always remember that if the width of the car is 1.8 metres and the track of the
21:05car is 1.8, that's exactly what the engineers will design the car to be.
21:09And those that want to wear on the side of caution and make it to the 1.75 will not
21:16win the race.
21:18Where did you ever see a rule book written to say, we understand this is a loophole, but we sincerely
21:23hope you won't exploit it.
21:25Right.
21:25Well, rules are only written to be grounded.
21:31133.616 in the first round.
21:35309.83, good, two, gives him a 136.216.
21:42That's pretty easy, three, Denson.
21:44Can you get a big speed for the end, Matt?
21:47He'll be conserving fuel all the way around his cool-down lap.
21:50Next up in a moment will be Nick Heidenfeld.
21:53The Castrol Engine Block.
21:55...Pang Circuit outside Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for the final round of qualifying for Sunday's Formula One Grand Prix of Malaysia.
22:02Bob Barsha, David Hobbs, Steve Matching with you.
22:04Peter Windsor is burrowing away in the paddock for all the latest news and gossip.
22:08Coming up on our Acura pre-race show before the Grand Prix.
22:11This is Nick Heidenfeld of Germany in the Williams BMW.
22:16He, too, with a fresh engine after crashing out of the Australian Grand Prix two weeks ago.
22:21We're talking about trying to preserve these tyres around here.
22:26Well, that's not the way to preserve those tyres.
22:28Let's start there.
22:29Of course, the cars have got traction control, so it would be logical to assume that the electronics on the
22:36car will try and preserve the rear.
22:37But there's no traction control, there's only two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive is banned.
22:41But there's no electronic assistance on the front tyres.
22:44The way you try and preserve the front tyres is to crank on a little bit more front wing to
22:48increase the downforce on the front of the car.
22:50However, we were saying earlier on in the show, because of these wide sweeping corners around here,
22:55and the drivers are so quick to get onto the throttle, and the car's sliding.
23:00Even with the traction control, the cars are getting a lot of oversteer.
23:04The only way the engineers can try and help that is to induce understeer onto the front of the car,
23:11take a little bit of wing off.
23:12So really, it kind of goes against the logic, the way that the engineers are working the cars around here
23:18to try and preserve the tyres.
23:20This is a pretty quick track.
23:21It's 135, almost 135 mile average speed these guys are doing.
23:26You hear a lot of the drivers on the radio and comments from the engineers saying the car's on the
23:31steering, the car's on the steering.
23:32The engineers are trying to convince the drivers, stick with it.
23:35In the latter stages of the race, that will pay off big time.
23:39A 136.453 for Nick Heidfeld.
23:44Jensen Button, the previous driver on track, had a 2.6 second differential between first and second laps.
23:50Gap right at three seconds for Nick Heidfeld.
23:53Divide that by, what was the number, Steve?
23:54Four tenths of a second for ten kilos of fuel.
23:57Do the math.
23:58And you can figure out how much fuel he'll have on board to start the race,
24:01and then figure out how many laps he can go before he makes his first pit stop.
24:05The fudge factor on that, Bob, is, as we just saw with Heidfeld there, running wide and losing a little
24:10bit of time.
24:11That, of course, is not down to fuel load on the car.
24:14At the end of the lap, when you compare the two figures, you think, hang on, is Heidfeld really carrying
24:17that much fuel?
24:18Well, no, he's not, because the time difference is, yeah.
24:21And, of course, the engineers, not only just the engineers you see on the pit wall, but behind the tensor
24:27barriers, behind the garage itself,
24:29there will be another 30 or 40 engineers monitoring banks of monitors, looking at every car up and down the
24:36pit lane.
24:37One engineer in some of the big teams, one engineer assigned to one team.
24:40So, you know, they are covering every single meter every car covers.
24:46Nothing is left to chance.
24:48This is Juan Pablo Montoya in the McLaren Mercedes.
24:511.333.333 on his first lap.
24:55Well, that is a good point about Nick Heidfeld's bobble.
24:58You do need a consistent lap out of these guys.
25:03Whoa, Montoya dancing with the devil.
25:07There's a little bobble.
25:09But it's something, getting this baseline from the first qualifying session, providing that the weather stops consistent,
25:16weather conditions remain the same, is something that we never had to play with last year,
25:20because we only had the one qualifying session.
25:22We had to really do a lot of fudging and guessing at how much fuel load was on the car
25:26from the practice times.
25:31A 3.10.090.
25:34Now, granted, Montoya was all over the racetrack here and there.
25:38A 1.36.757 is 3.4 seconds slower than his first round time.
25:45Ron Dennis, who we saw there looking a bit grim as he looked at the monitor, was not very happy
25:49with either of his drivers two weeks ago in Australia.
25:51He was very ticked off that Rye could install on the grid.
25:56And there's a bit of a lock up there.
25:57You've got to be very careful locking up your tires here, because those tires are going to be with you
26:01for the rest of the weekend.
26:03And he wasn't very happy with Montoya, who apparently had a huge bobble, which we didn't see in Australia.
26:09And he says that lost in a podium.
26:15So, his drive is coming under pressure.
26:18Oh, but don't worry.
26:20Ron has a whole bunch of practical jokes planned.
26:22He's going to use humor as a weapon to keep his team loose this year.
26:25He said it.
26:26Well, that should be interesting to see.
26:28Oh, my goodness.
26:29All of this.
26:29Good time there by Mark Webber.
26:32Australian, of course, we're seeing at long last after five years whether Mark Webber could really drive or not.
26:37Now he's got himself a proper number one car.
26:39Like St. George Bush is going to use hip-hop music to keep his administration.
26:43That's right, Luce.
26:46Stunned up humor of the Politburo.
26:57Tight turn nine hairpin.
26:59Also the end of the...
27:00Look at the front wing on the FW-27.
27:02You see those two little extra flaps that are sort of pointing inwards on the front wing end plates.
27:07Another attempt by the Williams Aerodynamicist to try and create just a little bit more downforce on the car.
27:15That was a good set for two for Mark Webber.
27:23BMW review to the last few years to have the strongest engine, but I have to say that the engines
27:29these days have all seemed pretty strong to me and no one seems to have any particular advantage.
27:35Well, these engines are wonderful things.
27:37They are, but what we must remember, of course, is this is going to be the second race distance on
27:42the same engine.
27:45Those viewers new to the sport and wondering...
27:47Save you, Mark. Save you. Save you.
27:50OK, go to cruise mode 3. Save you and test the drink bottle.
27:57Test that drink bottle. A 1.35.700 for Mark Webber.
28:03He moves to provisional pole. We'll take a break. Return.
28:12Drivers in this second round of qualifying to set the grid for the Malaysian Grand Prix.
28:16With Steve Matchett, David Hobbs, I'm Bob Marcia.
28:19This is Ralph Schumacher in the Toyota.
28:23Well, does it seem to come to life this year?
28:28A bit of understeer there.
28:33Turn 1 and 2 complex are tied here. There's no doubt about it.
28:42Turn 4. A little bit bumpy on the approach here.
28:44It looks like it resurfaced a little bit.
28:48That's where his brother put a wheel on the curb.
29:07That's where I was.
29:23I think there's no doubt about it.
29:43Right hand flicking, paddles, calling for the deer ships.
29:563.09007 for Ralf Schumacher, a 1.35.901 second lap, that's a 2.8 second gap from his first
30:06second lap.
30:063.09007 for Ralf Schumacher, P6, Räikkönen behind, P6, Räikkönen behind, P6, Räikkönen behind.
30:27Weber remains the provisional pole sitter, here comes Kimi Räikkönen.
30:31Again, Ralf Schumacher showing that Toyota this year, just so much better than it's
30:36been the last two or three years and they just don't seem to have made any ground at all
30:40and suddenly this year came to life in Australiano truly on the front row, slipped back to ninth
30:46at the end, but Kimi Räikkönen.
30:49One of four drivers to dip under Michael Schumacher's record lap for pole in this race a year ago.
30:56Michael did a 1.33.074.
30:59Räikkönen the slowest of the four drivers to dip into the 1 minute 32 seconds zone.
31:04And of course this is the scene of Kimi Räikkönen's first win back in 2003.
31:13That was the day we had one of the youngest podiums ever, was he and Alonso on the podium.
31:20Ruben Barrichello.
31:22Ruben Barrichello was second.
31:38Paul Wäikkönen in Australia two weeks ago, he was absolutely wild everywhere on that track.
31:43A little more room to play here.
31:47Well he finally whipped one of those barge boards off and slotted more time.
31:51It also brought the wrath of Ron Deniz down on his head.
31:55Did it for damaging the car?
31:59309.483 for the flying fin.
32:02That's a 136.664.
32:05That is a 3.8 second gap.
32:10Where are the new crew uniforms?
32:13I guess we've got to quit picking on them.
32:15Because they're going to wear them all year whether we like them or not.
32:17Everybody keeps on saying well it's the McLaren orange from years ago when the only color they have was orange.
32:23But that's not orange, it's a sort of lurid pink.
32:27Kimi Räikkönen quite a bit faster than his teammate Juan Pablo Montoya.
32:31But of course we saw Montoya make a couple of little bobbles there.
32:34Fischer Keller on pole two weeks ago in Australia and then it went on to win the race.
32:40Renault's looking very good this year.
32:42And Steve Matzik's favorite car.
32:45The Renault.
32:48Wow.
32:49It is a very beautiful looking machine I have to say.
32:53I think they've done wonders with it.
32:56Talking about the McLaren, which we're not watching now but we just saw that they have finally managed to get
33:02their carbon fiber gearbox up and running.
33:07It's taken them a long long while to get the thing reliable.
33:17It's so round isn't it? There's a beautiful curve everywhere. Look at that.
33:21Beautiful how they've got those, yeah the side pods are ported in tight.
33:25The sharp gill slats running along the top of the bodywork.
33:30Yeah they have every reason to be proud of this machine.
33:49Very fast down the straight as well.
33:52Wow.
33:53A couple of years ago the one thing if you can guarantee that Renault's handled well but they were always
33:57slow on the straight.
33:58That's not slow on the straight at all.
34:00That's bumping 190 miles an hour.
34:03308.448 for Fizzico.
34:05That's a 135.683.
34:08That's all nine, that's all nine.
34:09Okay nice lap mate.
34:11You are P1 at the moment by half a second.
34:14Half a second in P1.
34:17A 2.9 second gap from his previous time.
34:19The Australian winner.
34:21Someone recalled the other day and it astonished me when I heard it.
34:24This was once the Tolman team.
34:26And it became Benetton and then Renault.
34:29The team that gave Ayrton Senna his start in Formula One.
34:34Can Steve match it?
34:35Well I wasn't there we were just thinking about Pat Simmonds who accepted the Constructors Award at the Australian Grand
34:42Prix for Renault.
34:43Pat Simmo engineered Ayrton Senna on that run in the Tolman.
34:49And has been at the team pretty much right through the entire life cycle of it up until today.
34:55He had a short spell away when John Barnard arrived in 91.
35:00But as soon as Barnard left again Pat Simmonds returned with Rory Byrne.
35:05Oh what a book he could write.
35:06And I hope he will.
35:08Here's Yarno Trulli.
35:10Who faded badly after qualifying on the front row in Australia two weeks ago.
35:14Suffered a blistered right rear tire.
35:16And fell back down the order.
35:22He was fast on that first split.
35:23How about the second one coming up right now.
35:27Crossed it again.
35:29After yesterday's first round he dedicated his drive to a friend named Stefano who he said had been killed.
35:36Turns out Stefano was a commercial pilot who was doing work fighting forest fires.
35:43I had the story right.
35:44He had landed his water dumping aircraft on the lake to fill it up.
35:48And on take off he hit some power lines and crashed.
35:53But Yarno Trulli was visibly shaken while sitting in the press room yesterday talking about his lap after hearing that
36:00his friend Stefano had been killed.
36:04Has he got it?
36:05And yes by a half second.
36:07That will put him on the front row again and it may put him on pole.
36:13C1, C1, C1 save fuel, save fuel.
36:16C1, RPM 12, save fuel.
36:19RPM 12.
36:22A 135.253.
36:24A 2.6 second gap.
36:27It's one of the smaller ones we've seen.
36:29There's the Renault boys now.
36:31That would certainly imply that he's carrying less fuel then.
36:34Yeah.
36:34Oh look at those temperatures.
36:36Now 120 degrees Fahrenheit track temperature.
36:3998.6 ambient.
36:44Now Fernando Alonso of course the Salon Pole here in 2003.
36:48I think he was the youngest pole sitter ever in Formula One.
36:50And who did he sit alongside?
36:52Yarno Trulli.
36:54They were teammates at the time.
37:04A little bit wide there but quicker in that first sector than Trulli.
37:13It's interesting on Fisichello's car.
37:16That Renault have modified the chassis or one of their access panels on the top of the chassis
37:21to put a little bit of extra driving cooling for Fisichello.
37:24But Alonso has not had that modification carried out.
37:31Which of course will benefit the aerodynamics just a little bit.
37:34It's that little scoop that they've put on Fisichello's car will pause a little bit of drag
37:39and affect the efficiency a little bit.
37:41And if you can live without it, so much the better.
37:45And Alonso seems to have managed to have done that.
37:47That great lap he had going here.
37:48Well he's looking pretty good here.
37:50Sector still faster.
37:52But he had a great lap going last year till that turn he just came through where he spun away.
37:55Yeah he spun in the gravel right, yeah.
37:58So he obviously likes his track.
38:00190, just over 190 miles an hour there.
38:02So that's the fastest.
38:04190.8, that's the fastest we've seen through the speed trap.
38:07So the Renault engine and aerodynamics looking terrific.
38:10And there it is.
38:12Pole by two tenths of a second.
38:15Flavio Briatore loves it.
38:17A 1.35.090, just a 2.5 differential.
38:21Power Mike, brilliant.
38:34There you see.
38:36About a six second radio transmission in three languages.
38:40Fourth career pole for Alonso.
38:44Welcome back.
38:45Qualifying is now complete for round two of the Formula One season 2005.
38:50And for the fourth time in his career, Fernando Alonso of Spain and Team Renault is on the pole.
38:56Let's go to the interview room and our Peter Windsor.
39:00Very warm congratulations to the fastest three qualifiers for the 2005 Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia.
39:05Third quickest for Renault, Giancarlo Fisichella.
39:08Second fastest on the front row again for Toyota, Jano Trulli.
39:12And on the pole for Renault, Fernando Alonso.
39:15Fernando, an interesting session again.
39:18Very close.
39:18And the margins, as it turned out, remained exactly the same as yesterday.
39:22Yeah, it was very close.
39:23Especially there were some cuts between the tenth and the fifth position that changed a lot today.
39:29And I was honestly a little bit worried about my position because you can be on pole or you can
39:38be fourth very quickly.
39:40So I tried to do my lap with no mistakes.
39:43I knew the car was good and I found a good balance again today.
39:49And, you know, we are on pole and we repeat the three positions that we were yesterday.
39:56Hopefully we can repeat again this afternoon.
39:59And now you face perhaps the hottest Grand Prix in history.
40:03Yes, all weekend has been very tough for the drivers with very hot temperatures.
40:11But even more today.
40:13So, you know, we have to prepare ourselves now, drinking a lot between this press conference and the race start.
40:20And hopefully we can finish the race in good conditions.
40:23Well done.
40:25Jano, on the front row again, becoming a habit.
40:27The Toyota looking very strong here.
40:30Yeah, I mean, we are confirming again our good pace.
40:33And I mean, I am extremely happy for my team, Toyota, because it's been pushing a lot to give me
40:39a good car.
40:40And we seem to be very competitive.
40:42So all I'm looking forward now is to the race because I want to confirm this pace of the race.
40:48And, well, that's it.
40:50I just want to go out and do it this afternoon.
40:54A lot of question marks in the pit lane before this session begins, wondering how much fuel everybody's going to
40:58run.
40:58As it turned out, it looks like everybody at the front is about on the same fuel load.
41:02Yeah, I mean, I couldn't do any better than this one with the fuel I had, because we believe we
41:08have done our best even in the strategy.
41:10We'll see how it will turn out this afternoon.
41:15But I'm extremely happy about the position against first row and again signing of progress in Toyota.
41:24Well done.
41:26Giancarlo, calmly there in third position.
41:28Nice place to watch the first corner, perhaps?
41:31Yeah, yeah.
41:32It's going to be very important to go through on the first corner.
41:36I like to keep my position and if I can overtake Yarno straight away, it's better.
41:46We are very optimistic to have the right strategy for the race.
41:49The car balance was still understeering even today, but I think it's good for the race.
41:58Usually there is a lot of oversteering, especially at the end of the race.
42:02So I'm pretty confident and we'll see.
42:07What do you think about the Ferrari's mid-pack, about two seconds slower than you were this morning?
42:12I think maybe they have a lot of fuel.
42:17They're going to try a very long first stint because I think they have a good pace to overtake some
42:27cars, especially on the pit stop.
42:29So I think at the end of the race they are there.
42:34They're going to fight for the podium.
42:39Well, that story still lies ahead.
42:41Here are the results of qualifying a starting grid for the Malaysian Grand Prix.
42:45David?
42:46Well, there you are.
42:47I see quite a big gap there between Alonso and Schumacher.
42:50Ralph Schumacher there in fifth.
42:51There are two Toyotas looking pretty strong again.
42:53Of course, the Renaults looking extremely strong.
42:55Mark Webber having a nice little run there.
42:56But not as a pretty slow, a pretty small gap between what he did today and what he did yesterday,
43:00which it can't look like he's not carrying much fuel to me.
43:04But all will be revealed for Fisichella to say that Schumacher and Barrichella were going to fight for the podium
43:10from down where they are.
43:11I don't know. We haven't even seen their name, can't we?
43:13We're down to ten there with Nick Hyde felt button there.
43:15No doubt upset to be out-qualified by both the Red Bull cars.
43:19Now you see Barrichella and Schumacher at 12th and 13th.
43:21What do you think, Steve? Are they going to be able to make it to the podium?
43:24Well, it's going to be a very interesting race, I'll tell you.
43:27They're going to be carrying a lot of fuel.
43:29I think Fisichella is absolutely right.
43:31We'll see what happens in the later stages of the race.
43:35Here's the biggest fuel loads around the Ferraris, the McLarens and the Sauberns.
43:39That wraps up qualifying. The grid is set and we are ready to race.
43:42So don't move a muscle.
43:43The Acura pre-race show for the Malaysian Grand Prix.
43:46Round two of the 2005 Formula One season is coming up next.
43:50Of course, that will lead us straight into the start of the Malaysian Grand Prix.
43:53For now, for David Hubbs and Steve Matchett, I'm Bob Barsha.
43:56Just stand by for live coverage of the Malaysian Grand Prix on Speed.
