00:02First round qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix was a handicapper's nightmare as changing weather conditions played havoc with the
00:08field.
00:09But Giancarlo Fisichella hit the jackpot on a dry track and put Renault on a provisional pole while the world
00:14champion lies mired at the back.
00:16But don't lose hope. This year in Formula One you get a second chance. It's time for final qualifying from
00:22Melbourne.
00:46Welcome to race day at the opening round of the Formula One World Driving Championship for 2005.
00:51But unlike previous years, the grid has yet to be set for today's Australian Grand Prix.
00:57Hello everybody and welcome. I'm Bob Barsha. We're about ready to begin the second round of qualifying.
01:03Alongside our David Hobbs and Steve Matchett, as always, the first session of this new two-part qualifying format took
01:08place yesterday.
01:10And as we watch the first car heading out on track to Kumasato, let's check out highlights of the first
01:14round.
01:16The home favorite, of course, is Mark Webber.
01:19And he thrilled the crowd by putting up a provisional pole time on what you see was a drying track
01:24after heavy morning rains.
01:25It's Jacques Villeneuve.
01:27The escape of all escapes. That was a terrific look at that 180 degree spin.
01:32Misses the wall by the inch, just slots into gear, and off he goes.
01:34Best of all, it was his warm-up lap. He wound up four.
01:37Giancarlo Fisichella came to Melbourne saying, I'm going to win this weekend.
01:40He was on a dry track. He put provisional pole time up when the skies opened.
01:44And Michael Schumacher, among those victimized, he got a terribly slow lap in.
01:50But he was better off than Kumasato, who crashed heavily in his BAR Honda on his warm-up lap.
01:56For Fisichella, provisional pole was probably as good as a victory.
02:00Step one, complete.
02:02But now he must defend that provisional pole.
02:05There you see Jeff Willis in the middle with arms crossed, technical director for BAR Honda.
02:09Here are the round one times.
02:11Takuma Sato is the first car on track.
02:14And we understand he has changed engines in his BAR Honda.
02:20They changed engines, but managed to retain the chassis.
02:22The monocoque itself, despite the severity of that shunt into the wall,
02:27did not damage the suspension pickup point, so they managed to keep the chassis.
02:31But new engine, you're right.
02:33So just coming up to take his lap.
02:35And he does not.
02:37He aborts the lap.
02:40So apparently, he does not want to put any extra mileage.
02:43This is basically an installation lap to make sure nothing is leaking.
02:48Formula One engines this year must last two complete race weekends.
02:53And he pretty much knew he was going to start well back on the grid anyway.
02:56Of course, for people tuning in, you know, with the aggregate lap times,
02:59counting from the Friday, the Saturday afternoon qualifying and the Sunday morning qualifying,
03:05that would normally be a no-no pulling off.
03:07But of course, this time, he's really not going to hurt himself much,
03:11because by not doing any time yesterday, he would have to do, you know,
03:14he'd have to be 15 seconds of lap than anybody else.
03:16And so is Michael Schumacher going to have to be.
03:19But it's Michael Schumacher in the rain yesterday at 1.57.9.
03:23Jean-Carly Fischkeller at 1.33.1.
03:25Michael Schumacher yesterday just caught the weather absolutely perfectly wrong.
03:31There was a panic in the Ferrari garage as they tried to sort out the tires.
03:34They wanted to put on extreme wet weather tires.
03:37They had the intermediate tires, the intermediate Bridgestones to hand,
03:41and they just managed to fit those onto the car.
03:43Michael wasn't happy with the way the car was reacting, of course,
03:46because of the extreme rain, but at least they kept the car together.
03:51It was a very touch and go, I think, yesterday to get Michael Schumacher out into the session.
03:56And now we understand he, too, has changed engines,
03:59so let's see if Michael Schumacher is actually going to do a hot lap on that new Ferrari V10 or
04:03not.
04:04But new engine, last year's car, last year's all-conquering car, we might add, updated to 2005 specs.
04:14Well, he's certainly not giving it much money at the moment.
04:17There's Nick Heidfeld in his new outfit.
04:19Driving for Williams BMW this year.
04:22Been in Formula One quite a long time now, but Nick Heidfeld never had a really, really good car.
04:26This may be his first really good year.
04:28Now, we should point out, as Ross Braun, technical director for Ferrari,
04:31looks on and talks with Michael Schumacher.
04:33Felipe Massa, who was the man on track just before Michael Schumacher,
04:37and also got completely swamped.
04:39He was on dry weather tires in the opening round of qualifying,
04:42was supposed to go out for his second lap, but he did not.
04:46So we move on to the next car, and that is this man,
04:49the seventh time and defending world champion.
04:53Yes, Bob, and as you say, this is last year's chassis, Jean-Todd.
05:01Ferrari Extreme Gaffer, looking on with interest.
05:06The little man who has done so much, not only with Ferrari,
05:09but before that with Peugeot and sports cars and world rallying.
05:15As you could say, he's a well-rounded motorsports gent, Jean-Todd.
05:20But certainly, Michael Schumacher doesn't seem to be a tremendous rush to go anywhere, does he?
05:26Because these tires, these new tires that must last through the entire qualifying
05:29and the Grand Prix itself, are tough to get up to speed and to temperature.
05:34But Michael Schumacher also rolls off.
05:37Now, that is curious, but perhaps understandable.
05:40He, too, unwilling to put extra mileage on the engine.
05:43We'll take a break and return.
05:47The Speed Channel's coverage of the FIA Formula One World Championship.
05:51Added to the first round qualifying to determine the starting grid for the Australian Grand Prix.
05:56Bob Varsha, Steve Matchett, David Hobbs with you.
05:58Going through our wallets, trying to pool all our resources to pay somebody
06:02to actually turn a lap in this qualifying session.
06:04Well, Ralph Schumacher is out at the moment, but just as an aside,
06:07his brother pulling off like he did there.
06:09Michael Schumacher started from outside the top ten twice
06:11in his first 209 Grand Prix starts before China 2004.
06:17And he's now done so three times in the four starts since.
06:21So his qualifying record taking a bit of a pasting at the moment.
06:24Just rubbing it in.
06:26Well, one thing that this aggregate qualifying procedure does do
06:32or offer the chance of it gives another session for the potential for weather
06:37to play a part in the grid.
06:38If you don't get it wrong on Saturday, you may get it wrong on Sunday morning.
06:42Boy, it was the last time we saw weather play a factor like it did
06:45in first round qualifying here.
06:46Except, of course, Suzuka Japan last year,
06:48which was the first time we actually moved final qualifying
06:51to Sunday morning race day.
06:55That's one of the times he caught Michael Schumacher
06:57out of the three times in the last four races,
06:59which was probably the best argument in favor of its passage.
07:05So the teams, the tires that you see now on Raul Schumacher's car,
07:09these dry weather tires, these are the tires that he must retain
07:13throughout the whole of qualifying and the whole of the race distance as well.
07:18No tire changes allowed.
07:19There are certain special cases where you are allowed to change tires,
07:23but as principle to the rule, the spirit of the rule, no tire changes.
07:28For example, if on the first lap accident,
07:30the front wing was to break off the car,
07:34Charlie White in the FIA technical delegate
07:36would allow the team to change the tires
07:38on the grounds of safety.
07:44Of course, the time you see in the corner of the screen
07:46is the aggregate time from yesterday and today.
07:50When each driver goes out on his second lap,
07:52the clock basically picks up from the end of his first lap the previous day.
07:55So you can be as confused as us?
07:58Well, the new World Graphics package,
08:02which you'll see on your screen,
08:04will help us try to explain it to you as we go along.
08:11Enormous pressure on this Toyota team.
08:13Upper management has made it clear they want results,
08:15and an enormous number of Toyota executives
08:17are in Melbourne this weekend
08:19to watch their very expensive investment make laps.
08:25And Ralph Schumacher appropriately
08:27goes to provisional pole on aggregate time.
08:30There you see qualifying one.
08:31He was 17th quick yesterday.
08:32He is fastest, obviously,
08:35at this session as the first man to complete a lap
08:36at 131 and change.
08:38There's Mike Gascoigne, their technical director.
08:40The most expensive technical director
08:42in the paddock area at the moment
08:44by quite a long way.
08:46Absolutely.
08:48Of course, Toyota sell a lot of cars in Australia.
08:52Australia is a big market for a Toyota.
08:55Here comes Patrick Friesacker,
08:58young Austrian with the Minardi team.
09:00People following this story,
09:01it has been an absolute soap opera
09:03owned by native Australian Paul Stoddard.
09:09Who owns the people on the side of the car are there.
09:19They arrived wanting to run last year's cars,
09:23updated.
09:26Give it some stick, lad.
09:29Went to all the teams to ask permission.
09:31In the end,
09:31the stewards would not allow them
09:33to run the cars in 2004 spec.
09:36So Paul Stoddard went to the Supreme Court
09:39of the Australian state of Victoria
09:40to get a preliminary injunction
09:42to be allowed to qualify.
09:44That injunction was granted.
09:47He then withdrew the motion
09:48after a long talk with representatives
09:50of the FIA,
09:52the International Governing Body,
09:53who threatened to pull all
09:55international motor racing events
09:57out of Australia
09:57if the courts were going to meddle
09:59in the affairs of the sport.
10:01Lo and behold,
10:01overnight the 2005 aerodynamic package
10:04wound up on the Minardis
10:06and here they are qualified.
10:07That is quite an ace
10:08to have up to sleep,
10:09isn't it, really,
10:09on the FIA.
10:13It's said to say,
10:13Paul Stoddard
10:14has not covered himself
10:15with glory this weekend.
10:16Well, of course,
10:17one of Paul Stoddard's
10:18and Martin Minardis,
10:19famous,
10:20highest Mervis,
10:20came in Mark Webber,
10:21came fifth here.
10:25That didn't sound too good.
10:26Then, obviously,
10:26he's running on the Redlands
10:27and hardly in the court.
10:32He slots into second place
10:34in halftones
10:35at the upper left of your screen.
10:36The drivers
10:38behind them
10:39in the order,
10:41topped by our provisional
10:42pulse hitter,
10:42Giancarlo Fisichella.
10:44You see the two lap times
10:45and the total.
10:46So two men
10:47are now firmly in the field.
10:53qualifying for the season-opening
10:54Australian Grand Prix.
10:55Moments ago,
10:56this was Christian Albers,
10:57the former touring car driver,
10:59pulling off at the end
11:00of pit lane.
11:01He was late
11:02getting to the green light
11:04to begin his second round
11:05qualifying run.
11:07You can't go, Chris.
11:08You can't go.
11:08Stop the car.
11:11Stop the car, Christian.
11:12Stop the car.
11:15Where do you want
11:16to stop it?
11:17Do you know,
11:17in the middle or on the side?
11:19On the right side.
11:20On the right side, please.
11:24That's where he is.
11:26He got that right.
11:27In the Marshall's position.
11:29What happened was
11:29he had two minutes
11:31as the sixth car to go out.
11:32He had two minutes
11:33to get to the green light.
11:34He came out of the garage.
11:35The team stopped him,
11:36pulled him back in,
11:37kept the engine running,
11:38tweedled with something,
11:39then sent him on his way,
11:40but he was too late
11:41to get out.
11:44You just saw
11:45Fernando Alonso
11:45flashing around
11:46in the Renault.
11:47There is Tiago Montero
11:48in the Jordan Midland F1.
11:52Portuguese driver
11:53getting ready to go out.
11:55Here comes
11:55Fernando Alonso of Spain.
12:00He's 14th in the first round
12:02with a lap at
12:021 minute 47.708.
12:07I love this car.
12:08I love everything about it.
12:10The only thing that worries me
12:12is its reliability
12:13during the race,
12:14whether or not
12:15they'll be able to do
12:15a race distance.
12:17They've done a fantastic job
12:18of enhancing the aerodynamics,
12:20really on a design
12:21that started last year.
12:23As we were saying
12:24in yesterday's show,
12:25there's hardly really
12:25a straight line on the car.
12:27Very swooping,
12:28very sweeping body lines.
12:30And look at that time gap.
12:33He is 4.381 seconds
12:35ahead
12:36of the provisional pole sitter.
12:38At this point
12:39is Ralph Schumacher.
12:41The engineers
12:41I was talking to
12:43from Renault
12:44were suggesting,
12:44you know,
12:44if we thought we were down
12:45on power a little bit
12:46last year,
12:47we made the most of that
12:48by having a lot of grunt,
12:50a lot of talk.
12:53This year,
12:54we had the horse car.
12:56And they got it
12:57for 58 laps.
12:59Gaining time,
13:00as you saw,
13:01up to five seconds now
13:02ahead of the provisional pole.
13:04Don't forget,
13:04he was five seconds a lap
13:06quicker than Ralph Schumacher
13:07yesterday afternoon
13:08because when Alonso went out,
13:09it wasn't as bad
13:10as when Ralph Schumacher went out.
13:11So it's all a little...
13:13Today is going to be
13:14very different
13:14to what we're going to see
13:15in most of the camp.
13:16Ralph Schumacher's lap
13:17was a 1.31-2.
13:19Theoretically,
13:20Alonso could be
13:21ahead on aggregate
13:22but behind on this lap.
13:24Of course,
13:25I doubt that that's the case.
13:26There he is,
13:275.2 seconds ahead.
13:28We'll take a break
13:29and return.
13:42Back in Albert Park,
13:43Melbourne, Australia,
13:44final qualifying
13:45for the Australian
13:46Formula One Grand Prix.
13:47Coming up live
13:47here on Speed Channel,
13:49this is Tiago Montero
13:50who spent last year
13:51in the Champ Car World Series
13:53in the United States.
13:54Now he is a Formula One driver
13:56with the Jordan Midland team.
13:59This is the same car
14:00that looked about
14:01as twitchy as that last year.
14:02So their winter test program,
14:04which of course,
14:04admittedly,
14:04with their budget
14:05has not been much,
14:06the car still looks
14:07pretty twitchy
14:08and when you have a close-up look at it,
14:11you can see some of Steve's ideas
14:14on that Renault.
14:15It looks so smooth,
14:16it's so rounded,
14:17so gorgeous looking.
14:18The old Jordan is a little bit angular
14:20to say the least
14:21when you have close-up shots.
14:22It's very angular.
14:23The biggest change they've made,
14:24apart from the requirements
14:26to meet the technical regulations,
14:27they have changed engines.
14:29They're now with a Toyota engine in.
14:31Should help them enormously,
14:32that.
14:32It should.
14:33The Toyota engine
14:34has a lot of horsepower
14:35and it has been fairly reliable as well.
14:37But to make an engine fit
14:40a chassis to which
14:41it was never designed fit
14:42is an enormous amount of work.
14:45Required all sorts of adapter plates
14:46to be made in machine,
14:48crack-checked and modified
14:50and run again.
14:51But they've done it,
14:52they've got the thing up
14:52and it is reliable.
14:54They've run a couple of full race distances
14:56in a couple of weeks
14:57prior to coming out here to Melbourne
14:59and it has been working well.
15:01It goes to P2,
15:032.8 seconds behind Fernando Alain,
15:05but ahead of Ralph Schumacher
15:07in the Toyota.
15:08Now once again,
15:08in view of the weather conditions
15:10we had yesterday,
15:11this is probably not a straight-up test.
15:14A 133.483.
15:16That was actually 2.2 seconds slower
15:19than Ralph Schumacher's lap.
15:21But because Ralph was caught out
15:22by the rain yesterday,
15:23his initial half of qualifying,
15:25if you will,
15:26was very slow.
15:30Now here comes a Ferrari.
15:32Rubens Baracchello.
15:34Rubens Baracchello,
15:35who yesterday afternoon
15:36in the rain
15:37got caught out pretty badly,
15:38did a 1 minute 45.48 seconds,
15:41so he's obviously got a long way to go
15:43to catch up with, say,
15:44Fisher Keller,
15:45who did a 1.33.1.
15:49So last year's car,
15:51the F2004,
15:53modified to 2005 regulations,
15:55new designation,
15:59F2004M.
16:00The new car has been built,
16:02it's been launched
16:03at Maranello already.
16:05In fact,
16:06it's testing right now
16:07in the hands of
16:07team test driver
16:08Luca Badua,
16:09which is in itself
16:10a bit of a
16:10violation of the gentleman's agreement
16:12about testing between races
16:14in Formula One.
16:15But that is a whole
16:17other story.
16:18Testing is a very hot topic
16:19in F1,
16:20and we'll say
16:20especially with Ferrari.
16:42The great on board shot there,
16:43the wing left
16:44above the Broward Hill
16:45and this wing low down.
16:46Putting that little chin wing
16:48out front,
16:48taking advantage of her.
16:52Loophole in the regulations.
17:03Markella comes to the line,
17:04into provisional pole,
17:05lap at 1 minute,
17:0631.3 seconds.
17:08Now he's basically
17:09fighting a race
17:09within a race here
17:10with Juan Pablo Montoya
17:11and Kimi Raikkonen
17:12in the McLarens.
17:13They all went out
17:14at the same time
17:15in first round qualifying,
17:16so they had basically
17:17the same conditions.
17:18And they were all
17:19on treaded
17:20wet weather tires.
17:24Here comes one
17:25Pablo Montoya.
17:26Boy, that looked a bit twitchy
17:27going through that last corner,
17:28didn't it?
17:28Because getting his leg
17:29right in it
17:29to launch itself
17:31down here,
17:32the longest straight
17:33on this circuit.
17:34Going to turn one
17:35is the best place
17:36to overtake as well.
17:37Well, for me,
17:38Montoya was the star
17:39of the show yesterday.
17:40I thought that the drive
17:41in the wet weather conditions
17:42and that McLaren chassis
17:43was just awesome.
17:44Of course,
17:45it wasn't quick
17:45because of the weather conditions,
17:46but to see that guy
17:48working with this brand new
17:51MP420 Mercedes-powered engine
17:52and Mercedes engine
17:54in the car,
17:55it was brilliant.
17:57That's what Formula 1 needs.
17:58This is the sort of stuff
17:59you need to take
18:00to Ferrari.
18:02Well, there,
18:02he's taking it to Ferrari
18:03there.
18:03Look at that.
18:06You notice those wings
18:07up top the engine cover.
18:10Saw a lot of chatter
18:10about those on the internet
18:12and the forums.
18:13The Viking wings,
18:14as they're calling them.
18:15They appear to rise
18:16right out of the driver's helmets.
18:18It's close to Kimi-Wright
18:19in this case.
18:19It's very fitting.
18:31He's making up ground
18:32on Rubens
18:32because Rubens Barracalla
18:33was not that much slower
18:34than him yesterday
18:35afternoon in the wet.
18:37I wonder if these guys
18:37are heavy on fuel.
18:53Get a great shot there
18:55at the high cockpit sides
18:56now where the driver
18:57had to come almost
18:58halfway at the driver's head.
18:59And if those of you
19:00watching the Formula 1
19:01decade show yesterday
19:02will notice how much
19:03the driver's head stuck out
19:04in just 1995.
19:07And he moves to P1
19:08with a lap at 129.320.
19:11As you see,
19:12he was 11th quick yesterday.
19:13Now he moves to the top
19:14of the charts
19:15ahead of Barracalla.
19:16You know what I noticed
19:17on that helmet
19:18on that shot?
19:19Seven different
19:20sponsor decaps.
19:23Yeah.
19:25That's where we stand.
19:30Still fairly big time gaps.
19:32Big time gaps.
19:33It's understandable
19:33given what we saw yesterday
19:35in terms of weather and grip.
19:36There's Mario Illion.
19:37His company builds
19:39the Mercedes engines
19:40that power the McLarens.
19:41Got a brake coming up.
19:43Right back for more
19:44qualifying.
19:46Welcome back to final
19:47qualifying for the
19:48Australian Formula 1
19:49Grand Prix.
19:50I'm Bob Varsha
19:51with David Hobbs
19:51and Steve Matchett.
19:52You are on board
19:53with Kimi Räikkönen
19:54and the McLaren Mercedes
19:56G-Force is measured
19:57on the left of your screen.
20:02because of the first qualifying session
20:06yesterday.
20:08The teams have been looking
20:09at fuel strategy a lot
20:10because take for example
20:12Rubens Barrichello
20:14running a lot of fuel
20:15in this second qualifying session.
20:17We think the reason for that
20:18is he knows that his position
20:19will already be compromised.
20:21Whatever happens in this
20:22second qualifying session
20:23in dry conditions
20:24because of the torrential wane
20:25in the first session
20:26you know you're not going
20:27to get a good grid position
20:28so you can factor that
20:29into how much race fuel
20:31you're going to carry.
20:32Even if you don't have an off
20:33for example
20:34in this second session
20:35you know that you're going
20:36to be compromised
20:36in your position
20:37because of what happened
20:38in the first session.
20:39so I think that's why
20:40we're seeing Rubens
20:42as you were rightly saying
20:43Bob perhaps carrying
20:44for fuel
20:45and perhaps going
20:45to a one-stop strategy
20:47from a two
20:48bearing in mind
20:49what happened yesterday.
20:52Kimi Räikkönen
20:53picking up time
20:53on his teammate
20:55Montoya
20:56not much
20:58look out look out look out
21:00how did he keep it
21:02off the wall?
21:03Wow
21:03that was a bit
21:05on the old hair rate
21:06that must have been
21:07over at the old lock
21:07stop there
21:08it must have been
21:10holy mackerel
21:12couldn't have got
21:12any more lock
21:13on than that.
21:15He was driving that
21:16with a throttle
21:16to get out of that
21:17wasn't he?
21:18As you say
21:18I think he must have
21:19had full lock
21:20on the steering
21:20and just relying
21:21on the rear tires
21:22kind of overcooked
21:23that one too.
21:25Wow
21:25well of course
21:26one of the things
21:27you know
21:27if you do a thing
21:28like that
21:28and you damage
21:29those tires
21:29you're done for
21:30because those
21:31are the tires
21:32that have got to
21:32stay up for the race.
21:33And so he finds
21:34himself in the middle
21:35of that three-way
21:36battle for position
21:37on the grid.
21:38ahead of
21:38Barrichello's Ferrari
21:40but behind
21:40teammate Montoya's
21:42McLaren.
21:42Watch that on board
21:43look onto the grass
21:44and a little bit
21:46almost keeps it
21:47straight.
21:47That was it
21:48you got it
21:49absolutely right
21:50David
21:50he was on the
21:51lock snuff
21:51there.
21:54I don't quite know
21:55what
21:56because that grass
21:57goes is wet
21:57in that rain
21:58yesterday afternoon
21:58probably.
22:01So those left
22:02side tires
22:02now
22:02I don't want to be
22:03a bit of dirt
22:04on him
22:07just a man
22:09after a long
22:10breath
22:11and he is
22:12Naren Karthikeyan
22:13must be watching
22:13the monitors
22:14welcome to the
22:15world of outlaws
22:15here on Speed
22:16John
22:17this is Naren Karthikeyan
22:19first Indian
22:20Formula One
22:21driver
22:24Karthikeyan's been
22:24around quite a long
22:25time actually
22:26British Formula
22:26Three
22:27nearly ten years
22:28ago now
22:28it's taken a long
22:29time to get to
22:30Formula One
22:3028 years old
22:34testing Formula One
22:35cars for one team
22:35or another
22:36since 2001
22:37this is his big
22:38chance to race
22:39them
22:50it looks a handful
22:52to drive that car
22:53doesn't it
22:55bearing in mind
22:56of course
22:56as we were
22:57sending the
22:58qualifying show
22:58yesterday
22:59the cars are
23:00running these
23:00harder compound
23:01tyres
23:03effectively
23:03they're running
23:04less downforce
23:04so we'll get
23:05to that story
23:05later on
23:06and how much
23:06downforce
23:07they've actually
23:07lost or not
23:08but running
23:10a higher front
23:11wing and
23:12reduced efficiency
23:13on the diffuser
23:14the rear wing
23:14has moved
23:15forward
23:16tyre seals
23:17cut out
23:17around the
23:17diffuser
23:18so they're
23:18losing pressure
23:19over the
23:19diffuser
23:21it should
23:22in theory
23:22be a lot
23:23worse
23:23than it was
23:24last year
23:26well it's
23:26tough times
23:27in the Jordan
23:27garage right now
23:28after the team
23:29was sold
23:29to Russian
23:30born Canadian
23:30billionaire
23:32Alex Schneider
23:34a number
23:35of their top
23:36staff
23:36left the
23:37company
23:38fourth place
23:39goes
23:40Karthikeyan
23:42not a bad
23:43job
23:44for the
23:44rookie
23:47team bosses
23:48looking on
23:51plenty more
23:52still to come
23:52from final
23:53qualifying
23:54and of course
23:54this broadcast
23:55will be followed
23:56immediately by live
23:57coverage of the race
23:58so stick

24:06quality machinery
24:09the points
24:10being Formula One
24:11races have only
24:12been the product
24:12of the last
24:13couple of decades
24:15this chassis
24:16the new
24:17BAR chassis
24:19talking to their
24:19designers
24:20over the winter
24:21they have made
24:22weight savings
24:23in every
24:24department
24:25something like
24:2510 kilos
24:26have saved
24:27out of the
24:27transmission
24:28they've saved
24:28weight on the
24:29engine
24:29they've saved
24:29weight on the
24:30monocoque
24:30the guys are
24:31telling me
24:32they're now
24:32running close
24:33to 100
24:33kilograms
24:34of ballast
24:35on the car
24:35that's like
24:36220 pounds
24:37of tungsten
24:38steel
24:39bolted to
24:39the chassis
24:40to bring it
24:41up to the
24:41racing
24:42minimum
24:42weight
24:43and their
24:44gearbox
24:44once again
24:45that piece
24:45we saw
24:45Steve Matchett
24:46looking over
24:47at Indianapolis
24:48at the US
24:48Grand Prix
24:49last year
24:49this year's
24:50is even
24:51more amazing
24:52including
24:52the fastest
24:53shifts in
24:53Formula One
24:54it was even
24:55challenged
24:55as being
24:56technically
24:56a constant
24:57velocity
24:58transmission
24:59that is
24:59a transmission
25:00that changes
25:00gear ratios
25:01without a
25:01brake and drive
25:02which is
25:03technically
25:03illegal
25:04but the
25:04team went
25:04before the
25:05technical
25:06commission
25:06and proved
25:07that there
25:08is in fact
25:08a brake
25:09and that
25:09the gearbox
25:10is legal
25:11but it
25:12is something
25:12else
25:12and a lot
25:13of Honda
25:13input into
25:14that gearbox
25:15a lot of
25:15Honda input
25:16into the
25:16team
25:16generally
25:16now
25:17they own
25:17a big
25:18chunk
25:18of it
25:18they brought
25:19it out
25:19over the
25:19winter
25:2045%
25:2145%
25:21and rumors
25:23of them
25:23taking the
25:24whole thing
25:24over
25:24within the
25:25near future

25:40so
25:40obviously
25:41quite a bit
25:41of fuel
25:41on board
25:42one would
25:42think
25:43still
25:44still faster
25:44than
25:44Barcello's
25:45Ferrari
25:45quite a bit
25:48here we

37:54he mentioned after qualifying yesterday with that big two plus second gap they had lots of options
37:59in terms of fuel load for this car now these are the dry weather tires he qualified on yesterday
38:05so whereas some of the drivers who switched from wets to dries for today these tires have
38:10already been through a heat cycle they have some laps on them yeah he's exploited an option because
38:18of his his great performance yesterday he could carry the extra fuel know that he's going to be
38:23slower in the second session but because of the aggregate time when you add those two together
38:27he's still going to be looking good on the grid with the extra fuel on board for those extra laps
38:32it really does give room for a lot of head scratching for the engineers now to try and
38:37get to grip with that there it is by 2.9 seconds Giancarlo Fisichella has his second career pole
38:48throttle T5 uh you are on pole by 2.9 seconds well that made fantastic lap so revs around
38:565,000 Giancarlo save as much fuel as you can and slow as slow as slow as you can
39:02quickest yesterday second quickest today that's a hard combination to beat
39:07was Flavio Briatore that's right all in a day's work I knew we could do it
39:12welcome back qualifying is now complete both rounds on aggregate for today's Australian Grand Prix now
39:19let's join speed zone Peter Windsor in the interview room with the drivers that will make up the top
39:23three grid positions for the Grand Prix at the completion of the second qualifying for the
39:29Foster's Australian Grand Prix congratulations to our fastest three qualifiers third quickest for BMW
39:35Williams Mark Webber second quickest for Toyota Yano Trulli and on the pole for the second time in
39:41his career for Renault Giancarlo Fisichella Giancarlo you're on the pole in Austria a while ago for a team
39:48not unlike the one you're currently driving for yeah yeah honestly it was a Benetton team in 1998 I think
39:57now it's uh it's changing to Renault and uh I really I'm really happy to to be the driver of
40:04that
40:04great team today has been another great day for me um um I did uh still the fastest time of
40:11the
40:11of the all the drivers which is really important I think we have the right strategy for the for the
40:17race today so I'm looking forward I'm just uh uh worrying about the first corner but I am I'm the
40:26leader
40:26so I hope it's gonna be right the weather looks a little bit changeable what were the track conditions
40:31like today honestly the track was a bit green but uh at the end I think uh the track was
40:40faster than
40:40than the beginning of the session um wasn't too bad considering the fuel load uh the car balance was
40:48good and uh felt comfortable thank you Yano great consolidation of your front row position there
40:55what a wonderful way for you to start 2005 with Toyota yeah it's great to be the first uh first
41:00row for
41:01Toyota for the first time I think Toyota is in the first row it's been an amazing weekend up to
41:06now
41:06and I hope I can consolidate this position at the end of the race obviously it's going to be a
41:11tough
41:11battle uh in the front but also because a lot of good cars and good drivers are on the back
41:18so they
41:18will be coming up during the race so I need to push really hard but anyway I had a little
41:23bit of
41:23understanding with the car and considering the fuel load and the strategy and also the tire choice I'm
41:29pretty happy well done Mark P2 today looking good out there thoughts for the race well obviously
41:38yesterday's session was uh determining the grid really as we saw today there wasn't many people
41:43that could improve or uh you could only uh go backwards really today but yeah it was reasonable lap
41:49uh see how the strategy unfolds today the uh the balance seems okay uh as Yano said it's a long
41:55race
41:56first time with uh one set of ties for everyone for a whole Grand Prix of course we've tested in
41:59that situation but uh racing's a different ball game uh BMW Williams good team so we're going to
42:05try and see what we can do you three guys are considerably quicker than a lot of fast guys in
42:09the middle of the pack it looks as if they're probably running more fuel than you thoughts about
42:13that well I think the track also ramped up a little bit during the session maybe not a huge amount
42:17but definitely uh the quick guys that were um you know the McLarens and and uh probably Fernando and
42:24some of the other guys that uh got hammered with the weather yesterday so uh it's about 58 laps from
42:28now on and uh we'll see who's uh got the business great that's right couldn't have said it better
42:35myself it's time for the business here's a look at the cumulative results David Steve and as he said
42:39about 50 laps from now we'll see who's got the business Vista Keller a great pole there first time
42:43it's 98 Jano true the first pole for Toyota so he must be very very happy Mark Webber obviously
42:48very happy in front of his home crowd for the first time Villeneuve first time for a long time he's
42:52been in the top four Christian clean there in the first of the Red Bulls second Red Bulls well
42:57they're not fizzy Keller they're almost alluding to the fact he was carrying a lot of fuel on board
43:01remember he had provisional pole yesterday and that could be a reason there's another guy I think
43:05number 11 Rubens Barraco in the Ferrari I think that's a Ferrari is loaded up with fuel we'll see
43:10probably a one-stop race Alonzo and Ralph Schumacher I think he's loaded up with fuel too
43:15yes then of course Michael Schumacher who didn't run at all today and Taku Masato who's always a bit
43:21of an unknown quantity
43:24well that'll wrap up qualifying it's been an interesting week but the grid is now set and
43:29we are ready to kick off the 2005 Formula One season so don't move a muscle the Australian Formula
43:34One Grand Prix pre-race show is coming up next we'll have lots from Peter Windsor and of course that
43:39will lead us right into live exclusive coverage of the Australian Grand Prix here on Speed Channel
43:44for David Hobbs and Steve Matchett I'm Bob Barsha stand by for live coverage of the Australian Grand Prix
43:50you
