00:23Old Man Winter has just about left the building at the Sepang Circuit near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
00:30The air is a nippy 99 degrees Fahrenheit.
00:33The track, a brisk 130.
00:36Look at that picture as the cars roll off for the second round of Friday practice for round two of
00:42the Formula One season live here on Speed Channel.
00:45Hello, everyone. I'm Bob Varsha.
00:47Backed up ably, as always, by David Hobbs and Steve Matchett.
00:50That is, when they're not throwing me under the bus.
00:51There's already been one free practice session earlier today.
00:54As Kimi Raikkonen waits for his turn to roll into the pit lane,
00:57let's take a look at the highlights of that first one-hour session.
01:02Of course, Friday means the Friday drivers, the third drivers for the team.
01:07They did the most laps, and they topped the charts.
01:10Ricardo Zonta in the Toyota, the quick man of the session.
01:13Pedro De La Rosa in the McLaren was second quickest in some blistering heat.
01:19And Vittentano Liuzzi was also very quick in the Red Bull car, having a bit of a moment there.
01:25And Michael Schumacher running fourth in the time sheets this morning in the Ferrari.
01:31First car on Bridgestones.
01:33Nick Heidfeld in the FW27 just trying to pinpoint exactly where the apex is.
01:38Bam!
01:40Straight over the bollard, and as you see here, wipes out the camera.
01:45We would have had some good shots from that, but it didn't happen.
01:49Takuma Sato in the BAR, the 007.
01:54Locked it up, spins around.
01:56Didn't look like the brakes were doing quite as good a job as they should have done.
02:01And then, look at that, Christian Albus in the Minardis.
02:05Sato takes back to the track, nearly having a come together.
02:08New engines in both of the BAR Hondas after they stopped short of the checkered flag in
02:12round one in Melbourne, Australia.
02:14That's one of the news stories of the weekend.
02:16No penalty for the BAR team, even though they exploited a loophole in the new for 2005 rules
02:22that require everybody's engine to go two full Grand Prix weekends.
02:26But that loophole has now been closed, we think.
02:29As you take a look at the session one times.
02:32According to the FIA now, if you stop short of the flag, and it is suspected that something
02:37other than mechanical failure was the reason, then you will have to explain yourself to the
02:41stewards, and may be in for a penalty.
02:44You will notice that the winner of the opening round in Melbourne, Australia, Giancarlo Fisichella,
02:49did not complete an entire timed lap in the morning session.
02:53Neither did his Renault teammate, Fernando Alonso, nor Toyota's Yarno Trulli.
02:57All three of those drivers took the checkers in Australia, and thus have a full race worth
03:03of mileage, as well as practice and qualifying on their engines.
03:09I have to say that Ricardo's on to this morning.
03:11His time was pretty good.
03:12He did 1.34 and change, which is just about a second off last year's pole.
03:17And when you consider how the rules have been changed this year to slow these guys down,
03:22that was a pretty good time.
03:24And obviously he's the Friday test driver, so he got all the laps in.
03:26But still, that was a pretty good run.
03:28We expected heat here in Malaysia, and we have it.
03:32The ambient temperature has now reached the century mark.
03:35It's over 100 degrees ambient temperature at the Sepang Circuit.
03:40But remarkably, the humidity is down below 50%, and that is very unusual.
03:45This place is usually as muggy as Houston on July 4th.
03:51I'm sure the drivers and the mechanics, of course, in that hot pit lane, but the track temperature
03:55just outside their pit box being 130-odd degrees.
03:58I'm sure they're pretty glad the humidity is down, too.
04:01So that's on to 1.36, 9.15, but you're right.
04:04This heat is absolutely staggering.
04:07The track temperature now approximately double that which we were seeing in Australia.
04:13And there's no way, as we look at Pierre Quasquier, the Michelin engineer, looking on none of these
04:20tires in 2005, have seen this sort of temperature anywhere.
04:23In winter testing, of course, they were down in the south of Spain at Jerez, right at the
04:28very tip of the southern end of Spain in Sherry Country.
04:31But even there, extraordinarily cold weather all around Spain and Barcelona, where they were
04:38running as well.
04:39But this temperature, quite staggering.
04:42And, of course, don't forget, with the new rules, you're going to do the whole race on
04:45the one set of tires.
04:46So, obviously, everybody concerned about tire temperature and tire wear in this extreme
04:51heat.
04:52The tire companies going into this race, Bridgestone thought they had a slight advantage over
04:58Michelin by virtue of the location of the factory in Japan.
05:02They figured that they could leave the tire compound selection until the very last minute
05:08and make the tires on Tuesday, shipping them out to the track, carefully studying what they
05:13considered to be the temperature they would expect to see and leave it until the very last
05:17minute until they chose the polymer compound to use on these tires.
05:21Michelin, from their factory in France, of course, would have to choose about 24 hours earlier.
05:27So, Bridgestone, it's a slight advantage.
05:30Our Peter Windsor is preparing a special story on the effect of heat on the engines and tires.
05:34You'll see it when we bring you our Acura pre-race show for the Malaysian Grand Prix at 1.30
05:40a.m.
05:41Eastern Time, Sunday morning, or Saturday night, if you prefer.
05:45Ricardo Zonta has gone right back to the top of the charts as he works on helping his Toyota
05:50teammates decide their tire compound for the weekend.
05:53Pedro De La Rosa, second, as he was in the morning one-hour session.
05:57And in third right now is the Jordan Toyota of Narain Karthikeyan, the Indian driver.
06:05His team's third driver, Dornbosch of Holland, runs fourth, followed by Thiago Montero in the third Jordan,
06:12as you look at Jensen Button.
06:14Montero in the car this weekend.
06:16We are told that his sponsors were late in making a payment to the Jordan Midland team.
06:21And there was some concern that the Portuguese driver might not be racing this weekend and that Dornbosch would take
06:28the seat.
06:30Apparently, the check...
06:33Yeah, he has a drive.
06:34Checked in the mail, they said it was in the mail, they were right.
06:39It was Rubens-Banichello, had such a great drive at Melbourne, coming from 11th on the grid to 2nd at
06:45the finish.
06:46And he maintained afterwards, he had problems with his brakes, he had too much brake on the back,
06:50somebody could not change the bias, so he was driving a car like a go-kart.
06:55That's a big car to drive like a go-kart.
06:57I wouldn't be surprised, David, if he did have problems just in the bias.
07:01Oh, is that Kimi?
07:02Kimi Raikkonen, yeah, in the McLaren, got it into the gravel truck.
07:07He ain't going anywhere.
07:09Switch it off, son, save the engine, you're not getting out of that.
07:15Yeah.
07:18Raikkonen was 7th in the morning session with a 1 minute 36.563.
07:24Here's what happened to him.
07:25Got a bit wide.
07:26Oh.
07:29Well, he got a bit wide.
07:31I'm wondering, guys, with this track temperature coming up,
07:34I mean, it really is getting incredibly hot out there.
07:36It must be lifting the oil out of the track.
07:38The conditions, the traction and the grip coefficient around the track
07:42must be changing all the while, lap to lap.
07:46Well, Kimi Raikkonen this morning did not do many laps.
07:50He did six laps this morning, and that's him done for the day now.
07:53So, Kimi Raikkonen has got six laps under his belt here at Malaysia
07:57going into tomorrow's practice and qualifying.
08:00So, obviously, they're trying to keep the Mardis down on these new engines,
08:03but they're not particularly wanting to keep it down quite that low.
08:06Turn 7 and 8 area.
08:08He had set the fastest time in the first sector before he went off.
08:14Well, Felipe Massa goes to P1 in the Sauber,
08:18putting heavy pressure on his team-mate.
08:20The first two laps are going to be in mix 4, and remember, we have different ratios.
08:26Roger.
08:26Three turn laps.
08:30Standard mix is mix 5.
08:34Well, the guys are just at the engineer on the radio there saying that the different gear ratios in the
08:39car
08:39and to set the fuel mixture to 4, different amounts of fuel going into the engine for different running conditions.
08:47We'll see what Jensen Button can do when we return live to the second of two one-hour Friday practice
08:52sessions
08:53for round two of the 2005 Formula One season in Malaysia.
09:00Speed Channel's coverage of the FIA Formula One World Championship is brought to you by Foster's.
09:05Foster's, Australian for beer.
09:07And by new high-endurance oils from Mobil, the oil that's changing oil.
09:18Welcome back to the second of two Friday practices
09:21for this Sunday's Formula One Grand Prix of Malaysia.
09:24Bob Varsha, Steve Matchett, David Hobbs with you.
09:26Jensen Button just went to the top of the time charts at 135.992.
09:32Compare that with Juan Pablo Montoya's lap record,
09:36a 133.223 set just last year.
09:42These guys, again, straight after the Australian Grand Prix.
09:47B.A.R. were testing down in Jerez in the south of Spain again.
09:50Desperate to get that hot weather as hot as possible in Europe.
09:54They were saying they had a terrible imbalance on the car.
09:57They found it very difficult to get into the slipstream of any cars in Australia.
10:03And they were wondering whether or not the new aero regulations raising the front wing
10:07and moving the position of the rear wing and altering the rear end plates
10:11and dropping the efficiency of the diffuser
10:13was really making the car so critical on aerodynamics
10:17that they just couldn't find the grip to run behind the car to be able to make an advantage.
10:24So they've done a lot of work.
10:25New front wing they've made, though that wing that's on the car now,
10:28I believe, is the one they were running in Australia.
10:31And Jester Jensen Button say he was coming in after three timed laps.
10:34So as he heads for the pits, let's take a look at our Porsche track map with David Hobbs.
10:39Well, the CPAC circuit here at Kuala Lumpur at 3.44 miles
10:43is the fourth longest track these guys go on in the whole season.
10:46As you can see, it's pretty complex, all tightly scrunched together.
10:49Typical Herman Tilke type of track.
10:52Very long straightaway down to that final hairpin,
10:55then a very long front straightaway.
10:56Look at that, turn one and two, pretty tight.
10:58Turn three is a good sweeper.
11:00Turn four is a bit bumpy on the approach.
11:01Five, six and seven, great sweeping corners there.
11:04And eight for that matter.
11:05Another hairpin down there at nine.
11:07And ten, eleven, a very long right hand there.
11:10Puts a lot of load on the left front tyres.
11:11Twelve and thirteen, nice little S.
11:13And then, of course, fourteen is another south sand trap.
11:16And there, in the sand trap, is our man Rubens Barrichello.
11:20Is he just on top of the gravel?
11:22Is he getting...
11:22Nah, will he get out there?
11:24He's stalled.
11:27He's stalled.
11:27I'm sure I just saw the rear wheel just snag into gear and then stop.
11:31Not often you see old Rubens Barrichello in the kitty litter.
11:34No.
11:34That's true.
11:35He doesn't spin often.
11:36No, he doesn't.
11:37Just have another look.
11:38Woo, big one.
11:39Got his money's worth out of that one.
11:40He did.
11:42Oh, and he wasn't going to be able to let it free wheel through there.
11:44Sometimes, you know.
11:46Not on those acres and acres of sand.
11:47And here you'll see what Steve is talking about.
11:49I don't know.
11:50He just cut off.
11:50Yeah, he just saw him try to snag it back into first gear.
11:54But no good.
11:55And that was his third lap.
11:59So, like Kimi Raikkonen, he gets two in the books before he goes over to sit on the fence for
12:04the balance of the session.
12:05Well, I wonder if it's coincidence, or perhaps not, that just prior to Barrichello's spin, the track temperature went up
12:11again.
12:13Track temperature now 133 degrees, and air temperature 104.
12:19There's a little graphic for it, but curiously enough, it dropped a little bit just when Raikkonen lost it, then
12:24went back up and Barrichello lost it.
12:26I'm just wondering whether these trackinesses are just catching these guys out.
12:29They think they know the limit, and then it's gone in a heartbeat.
12:32With a sweat on the face of that engineer, just standing there on the pit wall.
12:36Well, I think one of the problems is, with this extreme temperature, they're probably all trying the hard tyres.
12:42And the hard tyres and the green track is probably not the best combination.
12:46Even with that extreme track temperature, these tyres just don't got the grip.
12:50You've seen a lot of cars doing a lot of fishtailing, and he's obviously not liking the way they're handling
12:55his car, is he?
12:56Lift it up, don't drag it across.
12:58He's not very happy about something, but we can't see what.
13:01Although, yeah, trying to make sure they keep...
13:06Imagine what they're concerned about, of course.
13:09They've reduced the efficiency of the diffuser, but underneath the chassis, parts of the car we don't usually get to
13:14see,
13:14there are a lot of very delicate carbon panels under there, less than an eighth of an inch across.
13:20I mean, very thin profile, very easily damaged.
13:24They're only designed to channel air, they're not designed to channel gravel.
13:28There was a rumour floating around this week that Bridgestone and Ferrari were unhappy with one another,
13:33that Bridgestone had requested that either of the race drivers, Michael Schumacher or Rubens Botticello,
13:37come back to those Jerez tests you talked about in Spain, Steve.
13:42That Jean Tote, the Ferrari team manager, refused to allow either of the drivers to go back to Europe to
13:46do the testing.
13:49Just as this weekend began, Bridgestone and Ferrari joined to assure the press that there was no hard feelings,
13:56that they had perfect confidence in Ferrari's three test drivers, and that they would solve their problems.
14:02Well, it is a bit of a flog from the Far East back to Europe.
14:04Absolutely.
14:05Do some testing and then drive back, although some of the other drivers did it.
14:10Kumisato had that big spin in the morning practice.
14:14The drivers are very keen to, and quite rightly so, to acclimatise himself as much as possible for this intense
14:21sauna-like heat.
14:22Well, the heat and the time change.
14:24Yeah, and I can understand the argument from both sides.
14:27I can see Jean Tote's idea of saying, look, we want our guys to be on form and fresh and
14:31as physically fit and able to drive as possible.
14:34And I can understand the argument from Bridgestone's side, but we want the race drivers, the guys that's going to
14:39be using the tires, to be testing the tires.
14:43And yes, it is a long pull back to Europe, but some of these guys who decided to take a
14:47break in the two weeks between races also did some flying.
14:49I think Michael went to Sumatra, and Fernando Alonso went to the Maldives.
14:55When asked why he went all that distance, he said, well, I decided I'd go spend some money up there
15:00since they were so devastated by those tsunamis over the winter.
15:04And he's got the money to spend.
15:10He's at the fastest lap of the opening round of the World Championship, did Fernando Alonso on a great weekend
15:15for Renault, finishing 1-3 on the podium,
15:18sandwiching the Ferrari of Barrichello.
15:26Sato flashes across when we get another lap.
15:29We'll take a break and return with more live practice from the Sepang Circuit in Malaysia in just a moment.
15:39Welcome back.
15:40Live Friday practice for the Malaysian Grand Prix.
15:43Here on Speed Channel with David Hobbs and Steve Matchett.
15:46I'm Bob Varsha.
15:46We're watching Felipe Massa, who has put his teammate, the 97 world champion, Jacques Villeneuve, fully in the shade at
15:53Sauber.
16:00Locking up that left front.
16:01Got to be a bit careful locking up.
16:03Don't forget, I think we've got two sets of ties for the weekend.
16:18Should be the fastest lap of the session thus far.
16:32Wow.
16:40Fascinating to look at this little accelerometer graphic.
16:43Here it goes.
16:46135.608.
16:511.4 seconds off the lap record.
16:55These are the house cars, of course.
16:57Petronas is the Malaysian National Oil Company who poured millions upon millions of dollars into Peter Sauber's team.
17:05You don't want to be doing that to your tires, do you?
17:08No, you don't.
17:09See, this track is incredibly abrasive.
17:12There's Peter Sauber at the center of your picture.
17:14So it'll start to rip the tires apart anyway.
17:17And there's a nice shot of the remote starter going in the back.
17:22The cameraman beautifully moves the camera forward so he missed the shot.
17:27He must have been listening to you.
17:33Here comes the seven-time world champion who has yet to score a point in 2005.
17:39Odd position for Michael Schumacher to be in.
17:43There is Jacques Villeneuve.
17:47Well, let's see how he stacks up for his teammate, Felipe Massa.
17:50He did not stack up very well against him in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago.
17:54Following on that disastrous three-race appearance with Renault at the end of 2004,
17:59a lot of questions are being asked about whether Jacques Villeneuve can still get the job done.
18:06He maintains it has nothing to do with him as the car, but didn't seem to affect Massa too badly.
18:17Well, his teammate is P1.
18:19He is almost four seconds slower.
18:23Of course, in these Friday practices, you just don't know what these guys have got in terms of fuel load
18:28and what tire compounds, because they haven't got that many tire compounds to fiddle with.
18:31The circuit temp is seven or eight degrees hotter than it was this time last year.
18:37It might not be a bad idea just to take a little snip the front flap off.
18:41Half a hole on one side.
18:42Okay.
18:44Take front flap off, because it is that much hotter than last year.
18:49Yeah.
18:51A little bit of downforce, it just made me want to do it on the car.
18:54I'm just trying to recognize the voice.
18:55I think there's been an engineering change at Renault.
18:59Rod Nelson, who I think was working with Alan Permain as his assistant engineer last year,
19:05has now taken over the job of running the other race car, the Alonso's car.
19:11Paul Monaghan, who used to work that car, I believe has gone to Jordan.
19:17So a bit of a promotion there for Rod Nelson.
19:19Rod Nelson's been at Renault and Benetton for a long while.
19:22He used to be in control of looking after tires all the while, looking at tire temperatures and tire purchase.
19:31Michael Schumacher changed engines before the Australian Grand Prix, so this is the second race on this engine.
19:37It was thought, since he stopped short of the finish of that race, after his collision with Nick Heitfeld,
19:44that Schumacher would have a fresh engine here in Malaysia.
19:47But the team has chosen to put a second race on that same engine.
19:52It's generally thought, the reason being, that the Ferrari F2005, the new car for this season,
19:58will be ready sooner than first thought.
20:00They've been testing it endlessly back in Europe.
20:03And if it is ready for the next round of the championship, two weeks from now in Bahrain,
20:10Michael Schumacher wants to make sure that he has two races on his old engine so that he can take
20:14the new car.
20:15If he were to put a new race engine in for this weekend, he would have to use it again
20:19in Bahrain,
20:21and thus would be precluded from taking the new car, if in fact it's ready.
20:24Of course, his qualifying record here is pathetic.
20:27Out of the, this is the seventh race, out of the sixth they've had here,
20:31only been on the pole five times, and it was third.
20:35Well, everybody has an off weekend.
20:38But, just talking about that engine situation, Bob, you bring up a very good point.
20:43There was some speculation in the press, and British press as well,
20:48exactly how this two-engine rule was going to be put into effect.
20:53Michael Schumacher struggling with grip there, wasn't he?
20:55He was, yeah.
20:56Now, this is an interesting shot.
20:58Look at those three LEDs right in the middle of the steering wheel there.
21:01I have had all sorts of conversations with engineers up and down the pit wall,
21:05trying to find out exactly what those three little LED sensors, or lights, are for.
21:11And no-one knows, and Ferrari won't tell me,
21:15which makes me all the more interested to find out what they are.
21:25They represent the Ferrari trinity.
21:28Tobin, Braun, and Byrne.
21:35Oh, that was a good bit slower than Felipe Massa and Jenson Button.
21:45Of course, Michael has twice the work to do now,
21:47because Barrichello has spun himself out of the practice.
21:51Here's Nick Heidfeld.
21:53Because some of the other teams, even some good teams like McLaren,
21:56have another driver to do all the testing,
21:58decide what tyres they should be using at the weekend.
22:01Schumacher and Barrichello have to do that themselves, obviously.
22:04And now, as you say, no Barrichello there to help him out.
22:17Well, Nicky getting a bit wide on that left-hander going to the right-hand complex there.
22:21Very ragged, that one.
22:23This is the witching lap.
22:24This is his third, the same lap that Raikkonen and Barrichello went off on.
22:31Felipe Massa remains fast man in the session.
22:34David Coulthard just put in the quickest second intermediate, 32-2.
22:39And he is currently third behind Massa and Jenson Button.
22:4335-6, 35-9, 36-5.
22:49Heidfeld slots into 11th.
22:52A big improvement for him.
22:53We'll take another quick break and return with more Friday practice
22:55from a steamy, hot Malaysia.
23:03Welcome back live to Malaysia for the second week in a row.
23:07The final FIA Formula 3000 champion,
23:10Vidantonio Liuzzi,
23:12has taken the Red Bull third or Friday car
23:14off the track and into the kitty litter.
23:19That's a big blow for Red Bull Racing.
23:24That would have been Liuzzi's 12th lap.
23:26He was on his 12th lap there.
23:27And again, we say these Friday drivers really being put to the fore now
23:31in this session to get an idea of tyre wear.
23:33They need to be banging out as many laps,
23:35trying to get up to a race distance if possible.
23:38Well, Liuzzi ain't going to do that,
23:39but at least he'll be able to have a look now at the tyres.
23:42And Liuzzi had been a bit more on the case there.
23:44He should have switched that.
23:45He should have turned the lump straight off,
23:47killed the engine
23:48to avoid any damage with the gravel onto the tyres
23:51because the tyre engineers will want to look very carefully
23:53at the condition of the tyres
23:55and he starts scrubbing it on the gravel
23:56and he kind of throws the readings out.
23:59Just a little bit.
24:00He did 18 laps this morning,
24:02so he's got quite a few laps under his belt,
24:05but this is not what they need their Friday test drivers
24:07who are doing get stuck in the gravel twice in a row.
24:09And this is the guy who two races from now
24:12in what the team is calling positive competition
24:16come the beginning of the European season,
24:18the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, Italy,
24:21Liuzzi will take over for Christian Kling
24:23in the second race car alongside David Coulthard.
24:26Yeah, I don't call it positive competition.
24:28I call that positively very unsettling for everybody.
24:33It doesn't really help much.
24:37Does it inspire confidence from the driver to the team,
24:39vice versa?
24:40Absolutely not.
24:41And I mean, you know, racing is one of those things
24:43when you're young like Liuzzi,
24:45it would be his first Grand Prix.
24:47Christian Kling is, what, 20th?
24:49I mean, these guys, you've got to get some consistency.
24:51You've got to get some practice too.
24:53Of course, if Liuzzi beaches it again in Bahrain,
24:55they may decide the whole thing isn't worth it.
24:58See, once you get a bit wide too,
25:00with these harder tyres,
25:01it's very high track temperature.
25:02Not that that should affect it anyway.
25:04Once they get out there and that dust,
25:05I mean, they seem to be all doomed.
25:08Here's Nick Heidfeld in the Williams BMW.
25:11Look at the size of the hot air radiator vent chimneys
25:14on top of the bodywork here.
25:16Everybody opening up the bodywork as much as possible.
25:19You see a lot of those shark gill louvers on the bodywork
25:23all over the Renault bodywork there,
25:25behind those little winglets as well,
25:27on Alonso's car.
25:28And again, running those very large radiator chimneys.
25:33They use those radiator chimneys now,
25:35as opposed to just the shark gills on their own,
25:37to extract the air from underneath the bodywork,
25:40but to get it away from the sensitive parts of the car.
25:43You don't want that hot, horrible, turbulent air
25:45running along the profiles of the car.
25:48You want to just get it away, billow it out of the way.
25:51Fernando Alonso, of course,
25:52the only other person other than Michael Schumacher
25:54to ever get a pole position here back in 2003.
25:58His first pole position.
26:02Well, the car was running fantastic in Australia.
26:05Pat Simmons, the director of engineering at Renault,
26:07when asked, you know,
26:08what do you think the strong point is about the car?
26:10He said, it's not really a problem.
26:12It's not a problem.
26:12We haven't really got a...
26:13It's all strong.
26:14We haven't got any weakness.
26:15We can't really say, you know,
26:16we need to improve the cantal grip,
26:18the aerodynamics, the cooling, the torque,
26:20the horsepower.
26:21Everything is working well.
26:24Fernando Alonso had the fastest second sector we've seen
26:27and very close to the fastest first sector.
26:29might have had a top three time,
26:31but for that yellow flag,
26:32you could see and hear him slow down.
26:34He eased up a lot there.
26:39Get another shot at it.
26:41The yellow remains out at that corner.
26:43We'll take a break and return
26:44with more live coverage of Friday practice from Malaysia
26:47in just a moment.
26:49Stay with us.
26:54Ten years ago, Formula One returned to Buenos Aires
26:57for the Argentine Grand Prix.
26:59David Coulthard scored his first career pole position
27:02for Williams-Renault.
27:03And at the start, he led cleanly away from the pack,
27:06but Jean-Olesi spun his Ferrari,
27:09collected most of the field behind him.
27:12The race was red flagged.
27:13At the restart, Coulthard led away yet again.
27:19But in order to find out how it all played out,
27:21you'll have to join us tomorrow
27:22as we look back at the 1995 Argentine Grand Prix
27:25on Formula One Decade.
27:26Steve Madgett will set the scene
27:28and add his perspective as a former Benetton mechanic.
27:31Then David and I will join him to relive the race.
27:33It starts at 2 a.m. Eastern time
27:35following the first round of Malaysian qualifying.
27:37Again, that's Formula One Decade,
27:39the 95 Argentine Grand Prix,
27:41tomorrow at 2 a.m. Eastern,
27:43only here on Speed Channel.
27:49Back to live action here in Malaysia.
27:52This is Naren Karnikeyan of India.
27:54He said he was concerned about his fitness for this race
27:57given the incredible heat of the Malaysian Grand Prix.
28:02Well, of course, of all people,
28:03it should be used to the heat.
28:04Karnikeyan should be pretty much up on air,
28:06India being extremely warm.
28:09And I must say I was pretty impressed with him
28:11at Australia in that wet qualifying session
28:14on the Saturday afternoon.
28:15I thought he did a terrific job.
28:18Looked very twitchy,
28:19but he obviously had the whole thing under control.
28:21And looked very twitchy there as well.
28:23Well, of course, the Jordan always looks twitchy anyway.
28:25He could take a look out as well.
28:26Karnikeyan just 19th in this morning's first round of practice.
28:3119th is where he is right now
28:32as he completes his 14th lap in the session.
28:37I should just verify something I was talking about
28:40a little earlier about the engine rule,
28:43the two engine rules
28:44and when and when you cannot change engine
28:46to avoid a penalty.
28:47There was some confusion whether or not
28:50the race season had been split up
28:52into blocks of two races.
28:54And if everybody had to change the engine
28:56or could change the engine
28:58without a penalty at the end of this race.
28:59So effectively, if you change the engine
29:01after Australia, you could avoid a penalty
29:04by changing the end of this race.
29:06Well, we talked to Charlie White
29:08in the FIA's technical director
29:10and race director on this subject.
29:13He said, no, absolutely not.
29:15Each engine must cover two full race distances,
29:18irrespective of whatever race
29:20the team decide to change the engine.
29:23And also as a clarification,
29:24there's some guys talking on speed.com
29:27on the message boards,
29:28whether or not that also played into
29:31if you could change the transmission.
29:33If you change the transmission,
29:34would that also incur a penalty?
29:35No, it does not.
29:36You're perfectly free and able to change
29:38transmission as often as possible,
29:40as often as you need to.
29:42Watching clean there.
29:44Oh, yeah.
29:46Oh, boy.
29:49He had the brake bias set
29:51very much to the rear of the car
29:53and he's locked the front as well.
29:54And look at the condition
29:55of the right front tyre already on that.
29:58Now, if that's a soft compound tyre,
30:00they're going to be in trouble
30:01if they're trying to use that
30:02for the race distance.
30:03Looks like that is now the leading candidate
30:06to be the set of tyres
30:07he will give up at the end of the day.
30:10Oops.
30:14Anybody want to go stand in this corner?
30:17Yeah, they thought I felt it.
30:20It gets a good all-round view.
30:22I'll tell you,
30:23it's a terribly robust piece of equipment,
30:25isn't it?
30:25For it still be working.
30:26It's amazing.
30:27I'll drop my DJ camera on the floor.
30:29It's wrecked.
30:33There is Jordan's Friday driver,
30:35Robert Thornbosch of the Netherlands.
30:39Got another break coming up.
30:40We'll be back with more from Malaysia.
30:57Welcome back to Friday practice
30:58for the Malaysian Grand Prix.
31:00This is Pedro de la Rosa
31:01in the McLaren
31:04on his 19th lap
31:06as he continues to accumulate data
31:09for the McLaren team.
31:11Now that Kimi Raikkonen
31:12is out of the session
31:13after his second complete lap.
31:15He's earning his money now.
31:17That's for sure.
31:18I think Kimi Raikkonen
31:19talking about earning money
31:20is definitely on
31:21Ron Dennis' hit list
31:23because nobody at McLaren
31:25was very impressed
31:26with the way Kimi Raikkonen
31:27stalled it on the grid
31:28at Australia two weeks ago
31:30which put him
31:30started in pit lane
31:31and of course in the race
31:33he had a few little minor incidents
31:34which ripped off the barge board
31:37got stuck under the car
31:38and slowed him up.
31:39So at the moment
31:41he's probably not very high
31:42on old Ron Dennis' list.
31:44No.
31:45The cars are built
31:46with an anti-stall software program
31:49but they can
31:52if the engine stalls quick enough
31:54it'll beat the anti-stall software
31:56and still stall.
31:57So although
31:57the idea is
31:59because these cars
32:00haven't got any
32:01on-board starters
32:02and should they go off
32:03or into the gravel
32:04the idea is that
32:05if the revs drop down
32:06to around 5000 RPM
32:08an automatic
32:09clutch engagement mechanism
32:11will operate
32:11and prevent the car from stalling.
32:14That's basically
32:15what happened
32:16a year ago
32:17at this race
32:18to Mark Webber
32:19when he was with the Jaguar team
32:20qualified on the front row
32:21and was swallowed up
32:22at the start.
32:38Look at the big
32:39fruffle G
32:39now look when he hits the brakes
32:41wham
32:42it's about three times
32:44the G-force loading
32:45you'll see about
32:46two, two and a half G
32:48under throttle
32:49but these carbon brakes
32:51are so efficient
32:52when the driver stamps
32:53on these brakes
32:54they will see close
32:56to four and a half
32:57to five G
32:58under braking
32:59over double that
33:00of acceleration
33:01of a thousand
33:02brake horsepower engine.
33:07It's he explaining
33:08to his team manager
33:09Chris Horner
33:10there was nothing
33:11I could do.
33:12Yeah, Chris Horner
33:13has heard it all before
33:14of course
33:15in any formula
33:16one Pablo Montoya
33:17there in the McLaren
33:18has only done
33:19seven laps
33:20this afternoon
33:20and didn't do
33:22a lot of laps
33:22this morning
33:22did five this morning
33:24so McLaren
33:24really keeping
33:25their laps down
33:28Montoya's had
33:28a quiet day
33:32David Coulthard
33:33David Coulthard
33:33the newly bearded
33:35David Coulthard
33:37partly in request
33:38to his team owner
33:39Dieter Mateschitz's
33:40recommendation
33:40that he lose
33:41that McLaren
33:42veneer of
33:43steely professionalism
33:45and lighten up
33:46a little bit
33:46there is no way
33:48Ron Dennis
33:49would have allowed
33:49in the drivers
33:50to grow a beard
33:51right
33:51it doesn't fit
33:52the image
33:53he got a bit
33:53wide going in
33:54there on brakes
33:55and had to
33:55just soft
33:56pellet to the
33:56corners
33:57that's rather
33:58messed up
33:58that lap
33:59some understeer
34:00in the red
34:00ball cars
34:02he just got
34:03wide going in
34:03there and
34:04got out
34:04into the grey
34:05stuff and
34:05decided to
34:07try and take
34:07it
34:08cool
34:08unlike his
34:09I was going to say
34:10his teammate
34:11unlike of course
34:11Kimi Räikkönen
34:12who got into
34:12the grey
34:13stuff
34:13and kept
34:13his foot
34:14right in it
34:14and drove
34:15himself off
34:15into the
34:15gravel
34:16in the end
34:19cool car
34:20had a terrific
34:20run of course
34:21two weeks ago
34:22beating both
34:23of the cars
34:24in the whole
34:24team
34:24and it was
34:25Mark Webber
34:26who jumped
34:26out of this
34:26car to get
34:27into the
34:27win
34:28for a brief
34:29look at
34:29the grandstand
34:30with its
34:30beautiful roof
34:33inspired by
34:34the national
34:34flower
34:35in Malaysia
34:36the hibiscus
34:37and talking
34:38to Mark
34:38Webber
34:39which we
34:39learned
34:40he's only
34:40done two
34:41laps
34:41so he
34:42obviously
34:42has got
34:43some sort
34:43of problem
34:44with the
34:44car
34:45unless we've
34:45missed him
34:46in the
34:46kitty litter
34:47as well
34:47or I've
34:48missed him
34:49I think
34:49he was
34:50well he
34:51seemed satisfied
34:52when he was
34:52standing around
34:52in the garage
34:53earlier
34:53he only did
34:54eight laps
34:54this morning
34:55and two
34:55this afternoon
34:56so he hasn't
34:56got a little
34:56laps under
34:57his belt
34:57no I wonder
34:58whether or not
34:58they're concerned
34:59about reliability
34:59of the engine
35:01we always have
35:01to bear that
35:02in mind
35:02now of course
35:03with this
35:03two race
35:03rule
35:04that if
35:06they've
35:06made their
35:06mind up
35:07that they're
35:07going to
35:07have to
35:08use the
35:08hard compound
35:09tyres
35:10if within
35:10the first
35:11session
35:11they decided
35:12look
35:12and don't
35:13forget that
35:13the Michelin
35:14engineers are
35:15walking up and
35:15down all their
35:16teams transferring
35:16data
35:17they could well
35:18have decided
35:19between BMW
35:20and Williams
35:21team and
35:21Michelin
35:22guys you're
35:23just going to
35:23have to use
35:23the hard tyres
35:24there is no
35:25point in running
35:25the car
35:26just save
35:26the engine
35:27Yarno
35:28truly
35:28who qualified
35:29on the
35:29front row
35:30in Australia
35:30and faded
35:31as the race
35:32went on
35:32and he had
35:34a blistered
35:34rear tyre
35:36seemed to be
35:36the only
35:37Michelin
35:37runner
35:37who suffered
35:38from that
35:39as Michelin
35:39swept the
35:39top ten
35:40positions
35:41in the
35:42final results
35:43and they
35:44pretty much
35:45swept the
35:45top 15
35:46positions
35:46in this
35:47morning's
35:48first practice
35:48only the
35:49Ferraris
35:49with Michael
35:50Schumacher
35:50in fourth
35:51and Rubens
35:52Guadichello
35:52in 15th
35:54broke up
35:55the Michelin
35:55Monopoly
36:03truly got
36:04only two
36:04laps
36:04in this
36:05morning's
36:05session
36:06so
36:06he's piling

37:12and I'm
37:13guessing
37:14that what
37:14these guys
37:15are doing
37:15is just
37:15ratcheting
37:16back the
37:16lumps
37:16they're
37:17dropping
37:17the
37:17rev
37:17to try
37:18and conserve
37:18the
37:18engines
37:19remember
37:19you've
37:20got to
37:20keep
37:20that

37:23I think
37:24they're
37:24learning
37:24as much
37:24as they
37:25can
37:25about
37:25how
37:25the
37:26tires
37:26scrub
37:26around
37:27the
37:27corners
37:27you don't
37:28really
37:28get an
37:29awful
37:29lot of
37:29tire wear
37:30down
37:30the
37:30straight

40:44and you're
40:46watching
40:46Jean Todd
40:46scratching his
40:47brow there
40:47because
40:48Michael Schumacher
40:48is languishing

40:51that last lap

40:58of the

40:59we think
40:59we have an
41:00update
41:00we're certain
41:01now that we
41:02have an
41:02update
41:02on the
41:02situation
41:03involving
41:03Rubens
41:04Barichello
41:04you are
41:05not
41:05able to
41:06take to
41:06the spare
41:07car
41:07in a
41:08practice
41:08session
41:08apparently
41:09Barichello's
41:10Ferrari
41:11which he
41:12tossed into
41:12the gravel
41:12trap
41:13on his
41:13third
41:13hot lap
41:14early in
41:14the session
41:15was brought
41:15back to
41:16the Ferrari
41:16garage
41:17cleaned up
41:17made ready
41:18to go
41:18under the
41:19rules
41:20it is
41:20permissible
41:20to then go
41:21back out
41:22onto the
41:22track
41:25and
41:27Barichello
41:27is now
41:28up into
41:28fifth place
41:29with
41:29seven laps
41:30complete
41:32I guess
41:33the surprise
41:33of this
41:34session
41:34is
41:34Ralph
41:34Schumacher
41:35in third
41:36spot
41:36in the
41:37Toyota
41:3835-8
41:40for the
41:41top
41:43seven
41:44six cars
41:44all very
41:45close
41:45together
41:51yeah I
41:51think this
41:52spare car
41:53you're absolutely
41:54right it's
41:55one of those
41:55anomalies
41:56if the
41:56marshals
41:57will bring
41:57the beached
41:58car back
41:59to the
41:59pits
42:00the guys
42:00can jump
42:00on it
42:01oops
42:02this
42:03clean
42:05not a good
42:05day for
42:06the young
42:06red bull
42:06drivers
42:09that's
42:09how to do
42:10it
42:10that was
42:10easily
42:10done
42:11right
42:15but of course
42:15it's not always
42:16the case that the
42:16marshals will
42:17bring the car
42:18back
42:18you're right
42:19very rarely
42:20you've got to be
42:21the right side
42:22of the track
42:22in theory now
42:24in theory
42:25there is no such
42:26thing as a
42:27spare car
42:27you're only
42:28allowed a
42:29primary car
42:30but of course
42:30if you have a
42:30problem with
42:31one primary car
42:32Charlie will
42:33scrutinier
42:34another
42:35primary car
42:36Charlie being
42:36Charlie Whiting
42:37I should say
42:38yes
42:38the race
42:39director
42:40and technical
42:40delegate
42:41and the man
42:42who was quoted
42:43as saying
42:43he knew
42:44that loophole
42:45in the
42:45two race
42:46engine rule
42:47was there
42:48but he figured
42:49no one would
42:50take advantage
42:50of it
42:52yeah
42:56you know
42:57in Formula
42:58One
43:01as long as
43:01the teams
43:02play to the
43:02rules
43:04that's what
43:05the rules
43:05are there
43:05oh everybody's
43:06having a go
43:06in now
43:07there's one
43:08more racing
43:09we've got going
43:09on here
43:09oh boy
43:10but look at
43:10the left
43:11rear tire
43:11on this
43:11car
43:12if they're
43:13running
43:13the soft
43:13compound
43:14they are
43:14not going
43:15to be able
43:15to do a
43:16race distance
43:16on those
43:17tires
43:17as I'm
43:17sure
43:2021st lap
43:20for Michael
43:21Schumacher
43:21and the
43:22other guys
43:22the Friday
43:23guys
43:23De La Rossa
43:24and McLaren
43:25now on lap
43:2528
43:26Zonta
43:26on 27
43:27so they're
43:27really banging
43:28out these
43:28laps
43:28to have a
43:29look
43:29to see
43:30whether or
43:30not
43:30they can
43:30get away
43:31with this
43:31soft
43:31compound
43:32but looking
43:32at that
43:33look at
43:33the tires
43:33on the
43:34Ferrari
43:34now
43:34I just
43:34don't
43:35believe
43:35they'll
43:35be able
43:35to run
43:36a soft
43:36compound
43:37of course
43:38Bridgestones
43:38on the
43:38Ferrari
43:39as well
43:39as the
43:40Jordan
43:40and the
43:40Minardis
43:41we haven't
43:41seen
43:41them at
43:42all
43:43in the
43:44first
43:44one hour
43:44session
43:45the Minardis
43:45ran a
43:46cool
43:46nine and a
43:47half
43:47seconds
43:48off of
43:49the
43:49fast
43:49time
43:50of the
43:50session
43:50but a
43:51solid
43:51nine and a
43:52half
43:52well he
43:52obviously
43:53feels that
43:53it didn't
43:53damage
43:54the tires
43:54enough
43:54for him
43:55to pull
43:55in the
43:55pit
43:56so he
43:56keeps
43:56on going
43:57what
43:57happened
43:57to him
43:57in the
43:57first
43:58place
43:59there's

44:00Sada
44:01wow
44:02kept it
44:03going
44:03note to
44:04self
44:04don't
44:04use
44:04that

44:05looks
44:06like
44:06Teah
44:07Haute
44:09there's
44:10Michael
44:10Schumi
44:18kept it
44:18all
44:18rather
44:19tidy
44:21see
44:21all the
44:21teams

44:22those

44:22didn't
