00:00For drivers in Liverpool City Centre, the cost of parking has changed
00:04and figures obtained by a business group suggest the extended charges
00:08have bought in more than £1 million in additional revenue.
00:12Liverpool City Council extended parking charges in the City Centre
00:16until 11 at night in July last year.
00:18The change followed a review of the controlled parking zone
00:21with the council saying it would help standardise parking across the City Centre.
00:25But the proposal faced opposition, with almost 90% of people consulted
00:30indicating they were against the move.
00:32Having to drive into towns especially, I find the councils there are bleeding towns
00:38and the customers dry.
00:39So anything that the council or whoever is running these things, make it easier to park.
00:46I mean, yes, the car is king, so you're going to need the cars to come in,
00:50also to stop them from going out of town.
00:52It's ridiculous. Very ridiculous.
00:56Anything to help people just park locally in town is a benefit to drivers.
01:02Now, a Freedom of Information request by Liverpool business leaders
01:05has revealed the financial impact.
01:07Between the 1st of July last year and the 30th of June this year,
01:11more than 143,000 parking tickets were brought within the zone
01:16during the new chargeable period.
01:18The council's figures estimate around £1.1 million in revenue
01:23from transactions wholly or partly within that period.
01:27Around £801,000 were generated between 6 in the evening and 7 in the morning.
01:33You've got some families that might not be able to afford a full car parking expense like that, really.
01:43Just make it free.
01:45Just make it free.
01:47One of the schemes we had, where I used to do, was that you go into a shop,
01:51if there was part of the scheme, you can get your money back or whatever.
01:55But, yeah, make it easier for people to help the retail,
01:59because it's not going to help the shops.
02:01People are working, and they work to earn money,
02:08and they don't want to be wasting their money on a full car park.
02:13The council says its income from on-street parking and parking penalties
02:17is reinvested in transport and highways,
02:20including maintenance, technology and traffic management.
02:23The council also says the funding's helped recruit 62 additional enforcement officers.
02:28I think it's disgusting.
02:30Not all traffic warnings are AI, but some of them are.
02:33And listen, some of them are nice.
02:35But let's come on.
02:36And it's Liverpool City Council again.
02:38Where's the money going?
02:39Since moving to Liverpool, I just got rid of my car,
02:42because once you become 60, you get your free travel.
02:47That will then cut out needing to park anywhere.
02:50And this is the thing that has persuaded me,
02:53is the fact that it's so convenient just to jump on the bus.
02:55The apostles are everywhere, but the denies do, and they will be done.
02:58End of story.
