00:00Conference, you want to raise your hand if you want to ask a question, try and get around everyone.
00:04Start with Samuel, who's on the front row there.
00:12Hi Michael, I know at training today, Kobimenu and Luke Shaw didn't participate.
00:18Are you able to confirm whether they've travelled or whether they're out for the game tomorrow night?
00:22Yeah, they've not travelled. Both picked up issues in the game on Saturday,
00:27so we're kind of working through that to see what that looks like.
00:31At the moment, they're not ready for the game tomorrow.
00:34I saw that you've taken Dan Armour and Matthijs Deleuze, it looks like he's back in the squad.
00:39Are you light on numbers? Because obviously you can pick 23 players for the Champions League games.
00:44No, we're not light on numbers, no.
00:49Of course, we've got a couple of issues with some players missing out, but we're definitely not light on numbers.
00:55I think it's good for the likes of Dan to be a part of it and the younger players to
00:58sample it.
00:59These type of nights, they're building up to the game, being around a group, get a sense of it, get
01:04a feel for it.
01:05So it's good to have Mattel back in and around it.
01:08He's been out for a long period of time and a little bit of patience with him and working through
01:12it.
01:13But again, for him to be back around, it's fantastic.
01:15He's worked so hard to get to this stage and he's had a long journey, so we're delighted to have
01:19him back.
01:20Just one more for me, if I may. On Matthijs, is he at a level now where he would be
01:26able to come into a game, where you'd be comfortable with him playing?
01:30Definitely comfortable with him playing.
01:32Of course, I think there is the element of when that time is and how much it is.
01:38I think he's played a little bit of the Lausanne game. He's done a fair bit of training.
01:45But of course, it's working our way through it and not too much too soon.
01:50But we've definitely got the confidence in him, there's no doubt about that.
01:55Evening, Michael. Just looking back at the Spurs game and ahead to tomorrow as well,
01:59have you been able to put your finger on it as to maybe the lack of performance,
02:03especially at the start, to kind of ensure you do start strong tomorrow evening?
02:08Well, we definitely need to start strong tomorrow evening.
02:10I think that's pretty obvious, you know, that coming to a place like this against a very good team
02:16with a lot of experience in this competition, we know what we're expecting tomorrow night.
02:23We'll be ready for it. The boys are ready for it.
02:25I think the way we responded in the second half in particular, I think you could see that.
02:31So that gives me a lot of faith that I had already in the boys,
02:34the hungry and the eager to put things right.
02:39And just a question for Lenny as well.
02:40Lenny, first of all, congrats on your debut for France over the break.
02:44Just wonder from the players' perspective, there's so much positivity going into the season.
02:49Have you guys had meetings away from training, away from the staff,
02:53just to talk about improving kind of the slow start to the season?
02:57Yeah, I think this is something really important as a team.
03:01Sometimes we have to speak, say the truth, and this is something we did.
03:05This is something we're going to do in the future as well.
03:09But yeah, this is something we have to do.
03:12Hello, I'm Elizabeth Conway from BBC Sport.
03:15Michael, do you feel pressure surrounding United's results?
03:19Do you feel the pressure is affecting the players?
03:22And how are you looking to restore that confidence ahead of a tougher and a fixtures?
03:27It kind of depends on how you define pressure, to be honest.
03:29I think there's our own expectation.
03:31You know, we know what we want, what we're capable of doing as a team,
03:36what we expect as a group and as a football club, and that comes from us.
03:40You know, I certainly don't look outside or elsewhere of what it should look like.
03:46I know fine well exactly what it should look like.
03:48You know, I've felt it, and I've felt the ups, and I've felt the downs.
03:51And so I don't feel the pressure from that at all.
03:57It's us wanting to succeed, and we want to win, and we want to be part of something successful.
04:02So that's the drive.
04:05There's no negativity around that, you know.
04:07It's a pure embrace in the challenge and being excited about what we can possibly do.
04:12And there's going to be times when it doesn't go for you.
04:15There's going to be times when it's a bit of a struggle.
04:16But to get to anywhere, to do something very good, to do something great,
04:22you know, you've got to be able to do something difficult.
04:24And if you can't do something difficult and get through it, then you're not going to succeed.
04:27And that's where we've had a bit of a spell at the moment.
04:30And we're hugely positive.
04:33The boys, they've got the confidence in each other, and I've got the utmost belief in them.
04:38And it's very fine lines, you know.
04:41We didn't start the game very well the other day, and we all acknowledge that.
04:45The last three goals we've kind of conceded, really, in the league have all been avoidable.
04:50And that changes things an awful lot.
04:53So it's very fine margins, you know.
04:56But I've got the utmost of confidence in the boys that we can win games and win a lot of
05:01games.
05:02And I just wanted to ask you about Bruno Fernandes.
05:05Obviously, last season, he won the PFA Player of the Year.
05:09His form was on form.
05:11This season, you would think it's fair to say that that form has changed.
05:14What do you put that down to?
05:16And do you think he's able to reach that form that we saw last season?
05:21Yeah, I mean, it's pretty obvious to say that he can, yeah.
05:25I mean, he's a top player, Bruno.
05:28And sometimes things don't quite go for you, you know.
05:31And sometimes you have a spell of that.
05:33And he's done some incredible things for this football club.
05:36And he'll do the same in the future.
05:38There's no doubt about that.
05:40Just one behind there in the white polo shirt.
05:43Yeah, just there.
05:46Hello, Michael.
05:47Marcelo De Valde, Dosis of Barrera.
05:49You had the opportunity to face Atletico Madrid during the preseason.
05:53And I was wondering, what's the difference are you expecting to fight in tomorrow's game?
06:01Yeah, well, I think preseason is preseason, you know.
06:04And largely, the actual teams themselves, maybe the individuals within the teams are going to be slightly different.
06:10There's certain principles within the game that maybe there's a similarity, but the whole intensity, the feeling, the emotion taken
06:19into the game and the general energy in the game will be a totally different game.
06:24And I know what the stadium can do and has luck from afar in Champions League nights.
06:31And we need to be ready for that.
06:33And it'll be a very different feeling to what that was preseason.
06:36Hi, Michael.
06:37Just behind.
06:38Just wondering if you'd had any update on Benjamin Sesko's prognosis and when you're going to expect to see him
06:44back?
06:44No, we're still waiting during this week, really, to do a few extra tests.
06:49So, we obviously, you know, we need to be right on top of it and make sure we keep doing
06:55the right things.
06:56I think we'll get Bam back as soon as we can.
06:58But at this moment, I haven't really got a better time frame for you.
07:02Obviously, the club did some good business in the summer.
07:04But I think when a lot of people looked at it, they were concerned about left back and striker depth.
07:10Do you think, one, do you understand frustration?
07:13And secondly, do you believe you have the depth to cover those areas with Luke Shaw and Benjamin out?
07:18Yeah, when it comes to transfer windows, when it comes to building a squad, I think there's a process.
07:24I think it depends a little bit as well of where you get the injuries, at what stage.
07:31And the number of them in certain positions, and all of a sudden, it can look different.
07:35You know, we can look very strong in a certain position, and then a week later, it might look different.
07:41And then questions get asked.
07:42So, I get that.
07:43We had to assemble a squad, and we have assembled a squad that will see us through, and we can
07:49adapt.
07:49And we've got plays that can step in if we need to, or we can adjust, and we can adapt.
07:55And if that arises, then we'll find a way, and we'll do that.
07:59That's just part of working through the season.
08:02Hello, Michael Gere, Gonzalo Palafos, Onda Cero.
08:05I want to ask you, how do you perceive the figure of Diego Pablo Simeone,
08:14also the work that you've done here in Athletic Madrid for the last 15 years,
08:18and if in Manchester, in England, you see a Athletic Madrid as one of the great favorites for the Champions
08:23this year?
08:27Yeah, I have a huge amount of respect for the coach, Diego,
08:34and how he's been here for such a long period of time,
08:37and to do it over a long period of time, to build, sometimes it takes time.
08:42You know, we're in a position now where we're trying to build,
08:45and we want to progress, and we want to be strong, and keep getting stronger.
08:49And I think the fact that he's been here for so long, you can see his imprint on the team,
08:54and the whole club, and they have a fantastic history in this competition.
08:58And, you know, they're really dangerous in this competition, I think that's shown.
09:04So to have that as our first away, this is our first away game,
09:07is a great test for us, and a great challenge for us, that we're really looking forward to.
09:13Question for Lenny, for me.
09:15Right back against Tottenham, how was that for you?
09:17I know you did it in pre-season a little bit, but what's the role like for you,
09:21and do you think that's a position you can play in in future?
09:25Yeah, this is a position I can play.
09:29If I play centre-back or right back, I'm ready anyway.
09:32This is a position I like to play as well.
09:34This is different things to do, of course, but you have to adapt,
09:38and I think, yeah, I have to be ready every time, if you're on the pitch.
09:43So, whatever the position, I'm ready to play, and I'm happy to play.
09:47So, yeah, there is no problem for me.
09:49And then, just on Michael, I know you touched on Bruno there, but is he fully fit?
09:53It feels like maybe, I know he missed a game for Portugal, but then he played three 90 minutes.
09:58What's his fitness like at the moment?
10:01Yeah, I mean, I've seen there was a lot made of it.
10:03I think he was playing, he was carrying something.
10:06I think that's pretty, it happens a lot.
10:10People don't maybe realise it, but it happens a lot.
10:12Players play with issues.
10:14I've played myself, I've probably played 80% of the games with some sort of issue.
10:17As you go through your career, it's not ideal, but it's kind of manageable.
10:21Some players are able to play with a bit more or a bit less than others,
10:26and Bruno was able to play the games, and that's the commitment that he's got to do that.
10:31So, yeah, he's pretty much over it.
10:35Still there slightly, but as I said, I could go through the whole squad at this point,
10:39and there'll be little bits here and there.
10:43So, right now, it's not a major deal.
10:45He's in good shape, and he was really bright this morning.
10:48I'm looking forward to the game.
10:50Ty.
10:51Hi, Michael.
10:52We're only really sat here with United in the Champions League
10:55because of what you and the players achieved in the second half of last season
10:58and how successful that was.
10:59Now we're sat here eight games into the season
11:01talking about you being under pressure and what's going wrong
11:04and how it might be fixed.
11:05Are you surprised at how quickly it's kind of reached a point
11:08where we're having these conversations this season?
11:12I'm surprised.
11:13You're never surprised.
11:14Of course, we hope for a lot more.
11:15I've said it to you over the last few weeks.
11:17We hope for a lot more.
11:18We've expected a lot more.
11:19We are where we are as well.
11:22I was well aware that the chances of it going in that direction
11:27of winning as many games and constantly winning games as we had,
11:30there was going to be a period when it was going to become
11:33a little bit more challenging, a little bit stickier.
11:35That's part of it.
11:38Football and building something takes a journey,
11:42and you've got to overcome things to, you know,
11:44I'm sat here with a coach here that's been here a long, long time
11:48and I'm sure there's times when there's been waves
11:52when it hasn't quite gone to plan.
11:54They've had huge successes in winning leagues
11:58and being around right at the later stages of Champions League,
12:00but they've had times when it hasn't gone quite to plan.
12:03We've got teams in our league that have had success,
12:06but it hasn't necessarily always been in one direction.
12:09And I understand when it's not going too well,
12:12there's a real kind of clamour and a real feeling of it's a disaster
12:20and it's all wrong and everything needs to be changed.
12:23I kind of get that, obviously, but that's not in our mindset.
12:27That's certainly not in my mindset.
12:28I think, as I've said, to achieve anything, really,
12:32you've got to be able to deal with things that are difficult
12:35and you've got to overcome things.
12:36That's just part of it.
12:37I did it throughout my career, you know,
12:39and just to be here, you know,
12:41Lenny sat here with me now as a grown-up as players
12:44and you have big challenges.
12:46And it's not that he sat here,
12:47he's made his fans debut last week.
12:48We're delighted for him.
12:49It's an unbelievable achievement.
12:51He wouldn't have played every game at the top, top of his level
12:54and won every single game to get there,
12:55but he gets there, you know,
12:56and we can't lose sight of the journey.
12:59We need to do something about it now
13:01and accept the reality and we win games.
13:03Of course we do.
13:05As I've said, the last three goals were probably conceded
13:08or all goals where, you know,
13:10we can definitely do something about.
13:11We know that, but the boys know that.
13:13And that's had a major impact on what the league
13:16all of a sudden looks like.
13:17So that wasn't happening last season, you know,
13:20and it can be the difference.
13:22But I love this part of sometimes when it's not quite going against you.
13:30If you see who's really there,
13:33you see within the group, the players, the squad, the club,
13:36who's really there and who wants to be here for the long term
13:39and is really attached to it and really means something.
13:41And the supporters are there.
13:43They want it.
13:45They're desperate for it.
13:47And we've got to give them something.
13:48So I think you've got it sometimes embrace the challenges
13:51to get to where you want to be.
13:53And we're right there now in the middle of it.
13:55But totally believe that we'll come through it.
13:59Hello, Michael.
14:20Y si...
14:21También hablamos muchas veces
14:22de que Simeone, el entrenador del Atlético,
14:24es algo parecido a Ferguson allí.
14:27Si allí se habla también
14:29de esa figura tan grande como aquí
14:31que es la del Cholo Simeone.
14:36Yeah, as I said before,
14:38I think the respect there
14:40is definitely spread to our country,
14:43for sure, it's definitely spread to me.
14:45I think the respect for the coaches is very big.
14:47I think what he's achieved.
14:51It's difficult to say in terms of,
14:53you know, Barcelona and Real have a lot of titles
14:56and maybe, you know,
14:58in terms of trophies that little bit more,
15:00but for sure playing against them,
15:03we don't treat them any different.
15:04We think they're as good as any team
15:06in this competition as in Europe
15:08and they're as dangerous as any team
15:09and they've proved that for a long period of time.
15:12So it's very difficult to see who's better,
15:16who's on par,
15:16but we respect them
15:18and we treat them as one of the very best teams,
15:20for sure.
15:23Michael, good evening.
15:24Ian Dennis from Five Live.
15:26You're just talking then about the challenges
15:27that the players face.
15:29You've got two particularly testing away games this week.
15:32I would imagine they're the type of challenges
15:34that the players should relish,
15:35but what gives you faith
15:37that they'll be up for those challenges?
15:39Because I know them.
15:40I know how much they care.
15:41I know how strong the group is
15:45and the other side of things,
15:47you've got no choice.
15:47You've got to be.
15:48That's why we're here.
15:50We're here to test ourselves
15:51and that's the great thing about it.
15:54That's the opportunity.
15:55That's in front of us.
15:58If you haven't got that little bit in you
16:01where maybe it's a little bit crazy at times
16:05that I actually love the challenge
16:06and really want to dig deep to find the answers,
16:08then it's not the place for you, believe me.
16:11So I've got the utmost trust in the players.
16:14I've seen it.
16:15I've seen it close quarters.
16:16I've seen it during games.
16:17I've seen it behind closed doors,
16:19in and around changing rooms
16:20when we've had successes
16:21and the behaviours to that
16:23and when maybe we haven't
16:25and I know what the players are feeling
16:29and how hungry they are to improve
16:31and it's a big week.
16:32Yeah, of course it is.
16:33It's two tough games, two important games,
16:35but we're hugely looking forward to them
16:38and we know we're in a spot at the moment
16:41a little bit.
16:42Definitely come off that, you know.
16:45And Lenny, just if I could ask you one,
16:48this is on the players, isn't it,
16:50for the slow start.
16:51So are you and the rest of the group
16:52ready to repay that faith in your manager?
16:56Yeah, of course.
16:57Still the beginning of the season, you know.
16:59I think we did well in the second part last season
17:02with the coach,
17:03so this is something that cannot be done like this.
17:08I trust the team.
17:11I trust us for the next game
17:13to move on and to do better,
17:15but honestly I'm not worried about this.
17:19Every team can have some difficulties
17:20in the first part of the season,
17:22but this is something we're ready for
17:24and it's something we have to move on and work.
17:29Michael Sidlow from The Guardian.
17:30You're talking about the respect for Simeone
17:33and everything he's done
17:34over a very long period of time.
17:36Obviously, and the comparison was asked
17:38about him and Ferguson,
17:39obviously those are real outliers
17:41in professional football,
17:42particularly in modern professional football.
17:44And you were talking about
17:44trying to build something.
17:46Does it worry you,
17:48not just in your case,
17:49but in football in general,
17:50that managers are not normally
17:51given the time
17:52to do the kind of building
17:54that they would like to do?
17:57Yeah, they're not normal,
17:58but it pains me to say,
17:59but the one that won the league
18:01in our country last season
18:03has been there for a long period of time.
18:04It's seven years
18:05and the first two seasons were,
18:08correct me if I'm wrong,
18:09maybe eighth or seventh or eighth.
18:12I think he's done an incredible job,
18:13Mikel,
18:14and that's another example.
18:18You know, we're talking about
18:19Sir Alex and Diego Simeone
18:22who have gone on
18:23for a lot longer than that
18:25and have built something
18:26incredibly special
18:27at both football clubs.
18:30It doesn't always take time.
18:32It depends on the situation
18:34of how things go,
18:35but more or less,
18:36to get to where you want to be
18:38and be sustainable
18:39and consistent,
18:40then it's going to take
18:41a bit of time
18:42to build that foundation.
18:43And that's the way it is.
18:48Chris?
18:51Hi, Michael.
18:53With Kobe out,
18:55would you consider Carlos
18:56for a start tomorrow
18:57given that he only made
18:57his first appearance
18:58on the bench for the club
18:59three days ago?
19:00And just how encouraged
19:01were you by his debut
19:03against Tottenham?
19:05Yeah,
19:06less than really encouraged.
19:08I think we're not surprised.
19:09You know,
19:09we know what Carlos can bring.
19:12going back to it,
19:13you know,
19:13we've got really good
19:15options in midfield
19:16and with Kobe not with us,
19:20then that brings
19:20different options,
19:23variations,
19:24and we're flexible
19:25to be able to adapt
19:26in that way.
19:28Yeah,
19:28there's obviously a call
19:29on Carlos
19:30to see what that looks like,
19:31but really happy with him
19:33how he came on
19:34the other day
19:34and that'll give him
19:35a really good step,
19:36really,
19:36of feeling Old Trafford,
19:38getting that first one
19:39underway
19:40and moving on from there.
19:42And obviously,
19:42not having your biggest
19:43summer signing available
19:44until, you know,
19:46mid-October's not ideal,
19:47but what can he bring
19:48to the team now
19:49and how big a boost
19:49can he be to you
19:50now he's kind of
19:51back in the Catholic of things?
19:53Yeah,
19:54you can definitely
19:55bring something,
19:56for sure.
19:56I think every player
19:57has to bring something
19:58to the group,
19:58whether that's playing
20:00every single game,
20:01which is probably
20:01highly unlikely
20:02for most players,
20:03but I think that's
20:05part of building the squad
20:06of sharing the load
20:09a bit,
20:10particularly in these
20:10type of weeks as well
20:11and working through
20:13the season.
20:14Carlos gives us
20:14something a little bit
20:15different,
20:15maybe in the balance
20:18of the midfield
20:18to give us
20:21that little bit
20:22something different.
20:22So we've got to
20:24pick and choose
20:24the right things
20:24for certain games.
20:27Hi, Michael.
20:28Sorry to ask
20:29about Brudo again,
20:30but as captain
20:31and as figurehead
20:33of the team,
20:34is someone like him
20:36undroppable
20:36if he's out of form
20:38or is nobody
20:38undroppable in the team?
20:41Now listen,
20:42this is not on Bruno,
20:44this line,
20:45so don't use it for that,
20:45but nobody's guaranteed
20:48a place in the team.
20:49Nobody's guaranteed
20:50a place in the team
20:51and don't take that
20:52as all of a sudden
20:53that's on Bruno,
20:54I don't mean.
20:55That's just in general,
20:57there's a level
20:58of performance,
20:59there's a level
20:59of behaviour,
21:00there's a level
21:00of understanding
21:01that we need
21:02as a group
21:02and as a squad
21:03and as a team
21:03to perform.
21:06All the boys
21:06know that,
21:07they understand that,
21:08they've got their
21:08own standards
21:09and they want
21:09to achieve things
21:10and they want
21:10to be at the best,
21:11so I think that's
21:13pretty clear
21:14and it has to be
21:14that way.
21:15And Lenny,
21:16can I just ask,
21:17third season
21:18at United now,
21:18are you feeling
21:19like a proper
21:20Manchester United player
21:21and how much
21:21does it help
21:22to have so many
21:24experienced heads
21:25around you
21:26at the back
21:26in Harry Maguire,
21:27Lissandra Martinez,
21:28Luke Shaw?
21:30Yeah,
21:30I think it helped
21:31a lot for me
21:32to improve every day,
21:34especially in trainings.
21:35I talk a lot
21:36with them,
21:36they help me as well
21:38to improve,
21:39so yeah,
21:39this is my third year
21:40now.
21:43I feel like
21:43Manchester United
21:44players since
21:45the first day,
21:45so for me,
21:47this is,
21:49I'm really happy
21:49with the beginning
21:51of the third season.
21:53I have to keep working,
21:55like I said,
21:56I know I can do
21:57better every time,
21:58so yeah,
21:59they help me a lot
21:59as well to improve.
22:01Okay,
22:01last question,
22:02just next to you there.
22:04Evening,
22:05Michael,
22:05Carlos Gonzalez
22:06from La Media Inglesa.
22:08From Spain,
22:09it seems like
22:10there is always
22:10a lot of noise
22:11around Manchester United,
22:12a lot of ex-players,
22:13ex-managers
22:14talking about the club.
22:15How did you
22:17cope that situation
22:18in order to prepare
22:19an important match
22:19like this one?
22:22I'm pretty good
22:23at shutting off,
22:24to be honest,
22:25and closing off
22:25and living a little bit
22:27in my bubble,
22:29if you like,
22:30and I think
22:31that's what we do
22:32as a group.
22:32I think we certainly
22:33look after each other,
22:34we all know
22:35what's out there
22:36and it's about
22:38managing it
22:39and controlling it
22:40and staying focused
22:41on what we can do.
22:42I think that's
22:43always the most
22:43important thing.
22:44It's always
22:45the way I've been
22:46since I first came
22:47to this football club
22:48and we understand
22:49inside what it's like,
22:51what it feels like
22:51and what we need to do
22:52and it's part
22:54of the challenge
22:55for sure
22:55of dealing with it
22:56but I'm used to it
22:58so I'm good with it
23:00and I actually enjoy it
23:01the position
23:01and embracing it
23:03of the challenges
23:05that brings
23:05is why we're here
23:07and looking for this
23:08Champions League game
23:09tomorrow night.
23:09It's where we want to be
23:10and tough tests,
23:11tough challenges
23:12but we want to face it
23:13head on.
23:14And one for Lenny,
23:16last year we've seen
23:17here in this stadium
23:19a football player
23:20like Ginski
23:21that doesn't have
23:21a lot of experience
23:22in the Champions League
23:23and make a lot of
23:24some errors
23:25so it's your second match
23:28in the Champions League.
23:29Have you thought
23:30about a special routine
23:32to cope this match
23:33in this stadium
23:33that gives a lot of pressure
23:35to the opposition?
23:37Yeah, this is
23:38the Champions League games
23:38but I'm going to approach
23:39the game like every game
23:40I do.
23:43There's a lot of pressure
23:45of course
23:45but this is not something
23:47that I really feel
23:49so this is a game
23:50I will approach
23:51like every game
23:51of the Champions League
23:51and it's a game
23:53OK, thanks everyone
23:54bye guys
23:55thanks, thanks a lot.
