00:00It's a big rivalry and it's two big football nations, like everyone who loves football,
00:05everyone who follows the World Cup as a football fan knows about this constellation and knows
00:12about what it brings. It's two big football nations. We expect tomorrow an intense match,
00:18we expect an emotional match. I expect a match with a lot of momentum swings and everything
00:25else would surprise me. I think we don't use it as a fuel. We know why we're here, we know
00:34what we want,
00:37we were never shy of expecting that from us, of saying it, of dreaming it. We are in the semi
00:47-finals,
00:47we arrive very hungry in the semi-finals, we want to have the next win.
00:53We respect our opponent, but we don't dip in in historic events and we don't make it bigger than
01:00it is. It's a big football match, it's like you said, a big occasion. We are very excited, grateful,
01:07but very hungry and ready to go. Everyone is fit to start, everyone was in training, except for
01:13Jurel who is suspended and Jordan Henderson.
01:20He's ready to start and as good recovered as possible. I think we had too much technical errors
01:29in our last match, too much technical errors that hold us back from finding a rhythm in attack. We
01:38were again a bit rushed in our decision making, we were not patient enough, we were not disciplined enough
01:44in our positions that cost us the rhythm of attacking. We improved through the tournament a lot in
01:52defending and defending as a team, so this is something that we need to, of course, have tomorrow
02:02as well on the highest level, but our rhythm, our build-up play and the acceleration of our attacking game
02:11combined with the technical execution has to be on a higher level and like I said, we haven't peaked in
02:19this kind of momentum yet, but I think a match, a stage like tomorrow, an opponent like tomorrow, a setup
02:25like
02:26will bring the best out of us, the best out of my players and we're excited for it. Honestly, I
02:33don't know,
02:34I just can tell you that I just saw the first half of Spain and it was again so impressive.
02:39The bigger the
02:40stage, the bigger the tension, the calmer they play and with more self-confidence they play. It's just very,
02:48very impressive and congratulations to that achievement already. For us, I said when I took the
02:57job that I think that we are very, very close, we reach quarter-finals, semi-finals in consecutive
03:04tournaments, we reach finals in the Euros and in consecutive tournaments, so that just tells you
03:12that you are there. If you reach consecutive quarter-semi-finals, then you're just there. We want to
03:19squeeze the last bit out, we want to take the next step. I like the switch of energy, I like
03:24the switch
03:25of energy again in our camp. I feel the players are very excited, I feel them very ambitious for this
03:36semi-final. No one is satisfied and it's exactly the right mixture to have the performance that we
03:44need for tomorrow. Well, it's just incredible, his campaign, his tournament, how he carries that team
03:49is just absolutely incredible. There are no words and for sure not from me, who am I to talk about
03:56that,
03:57that is just no words left for this kind of achievement, the responsibility and the quality that
04:04he shows again in this tournament. He's just the leader and the key player in any team that he plays
04:14and for sure in this Argentinian side. You can see the cohesion, you can see that they are experienced
04:22in tournament football, they kept the same group of players, the core group of players, they have a very
04:31experienced, very, very good coach, they're together for a long time, so you see that. They love to play
04:37in the middle of the pitch, they love to have the short passes, they're always looking for the gaps,
04:43they're playing through gaps and once Leo Messi has the ball, the movement starts and just the technical
04:50execution of the delivery and of the supply of Messi is just on the absolutely highest level.
04:57So there's a lot to take care of, but we are here to play our way, the semi-final, we
05:05are here to
05:06to impose our style, to impose our strengths, we are here to play the semi-final our way and to
05:12push the
05:13luck our way. We know how big the obstacle is, we know how big the ask is, but we're ready
05:21for it.
05:21I see them better than the both of them, but everyone is entitled to their third opinion.
05:28I see, like I said, first of all, they have the mentality, they have the togetherness,
05:35they don't panic when they're behind, they're a very, very competitive group, they're like
05:40high quality players, very experienced players in every position. They love to play through the middle,
05:46they can defend hard, so for me it's the full package. I think it's just my first tournament,
05:56but of course my first World Cup, but not my first tournament as a coach. It's very rare that you
06:01fly
06:02through a tournament and it's just like everything falls into place from match to match to match.
06:07It's normal that you have to work hard and overcome difficulties. I think it says more about their
06:14strengths than about their weakness that they overcame them. We prepare for the best version
06:22of Argentina. We expect and hope and demand the best of ourselves tomorrow for top football match.
06:31I think every team in the world is beatable, so is Argentina, so is us, and both teams will try
06:38tomorrow.
06:39Look at his record, I mean, this is unbelievable. It seems like they cannot lose any knockout matches
06:46in tournaments with him, so what he does to this group is outstanding. They play with a clear
06:55trademark, as I didn't see a lot of them because either we are in training or in buses or in
07:03planes,
07:03so I didn't see a lot of them. Today I saw one half. I can just talk about that. That
07:07was very impressive.
07:09And like I said, congratulations, full credit to them and of course the coach and his stuff.
07:16Brilliant achievement and hopefully we can follow, but we have a big challenge to overcome tomorrow.
07:24We trust our intuition, to be honest, and our intuition and our experience on the sideline,
07:30and I think we need to just also be free and ready to react how the game goes. We're just
07:37predicting
07:37and no one knows, so you go with the flow. This is what it is. I'm not sure if I
07:44talked special ops,
07:45this is not my language, but we talked about roles, of course, so our players know the role,
07:51why they are here, why they are selected. And then, yeah, they know it, they make the most of it.
07:58They fight for their place in the starting 11. If not, everyone contributes on a very, very high level.
08:05It has to be like this, but the players deserve the full praise. We had so many positive impacts
08:11from the guys from the bench, from the guys who came in, but also the guys who were pushing positively,
08:17coaching, giving good energy from the sideline, if not selected. And a lot of it happens behind closed doors.
08:26So no one has the head down. Everyone stays positive, comes to training on match day plus one, sets the
08:33standard again,
08:34lifts the spirit again, drags not anyone down. So a lot of it happens behind closed doors and it's full
08:41credit to the team.
08:42I think everyone feels it. I think the players feel it and they transmit it to our fans.
08:47And then, like I said, it's just like, yeah, sometimes in Mexico, I had a quick chat, for example,
08:54with Stan Byrne and Trevor Chaloba about the potential change if we go to a back five. And yeah,
09:00it's just nice if you see the connection to the players and the open faces, that they're open for information
09:07and open to buy into that idea. And that's what makes this group of players for us very special.
09:13And I hope we can show it tomorrow one more time. Not sure if we follow through with this idea,
09:19but it crossed my mind.
09:21Well, I think everyone knows the spaces and everyone knows the spaces where he wants to show up. It's just
09:27like
09:28if you analyze the matches, you feel like he sees stuff just earlier than anyone else on the field.
09:34It's just like the ball drops to him. He finds the gap. He makes himself this like
09:39these two meters space for his left foot and then executes the solution on the very highest level.
09:48I think we found some patterns in their game, of course. But yeah, if you close the patterns,
09:54he will find maybe a new one and create a new one. That's his super strength. That's just what it
09:59is.
09:59It's an exciting setup. It's very unique to play against the reigning champions. It's very unique to
10:08play against Leo Messi and his team. It's unique to play with England against Argentina. It's just
10:15a big match in a big tournament. I don't know. I don't know. I said it many times when I
10:25came to
10:25Premier League. I love the mentality in the country towards sports and of course towards football. I think
10:32the mentality in England and the mentality within the club brings just the best out of players and
10:40and shapes the player's character in a very unique way. It's a pleasure to be coach of this group. It's
10:46a pleasure to be with these players every single day. I try my best to influence them. I try my
10:53best to
10:54support them. If this has anything to do with my German roots or not, I don't know.
11:03We're just all very competitive and we're very together, full of respect and appreciation. Like I said,
11:11we're still competitive for tomorrow and it's not enough. After these Champions League knockout matches,
11:20first of all, the second match in these knockout matches in the Champions League is more demanding
11:24than the first one because in the first one you always feel, okay, this is first leg, you have second
11:28leg. So it comes very close to the second leg formation, but it feels like you have nonstop second
11:34legs because it's nonstop knockout football, which is quite nerve-wracking, especially if you follow
11:41our way with red cards and with going behind and with VR checks and overtime. So we had quite some
11:49roller coaster experience that costs a lot and it is kind of training. We played in the altitude,
11:54we played in the heat, you travel in between. It is both, I think. I have the feeling or I
12:01can tell
12:01you that it fuels me, it makes me feel alive. It's just like I love it so much that it
12:06gives me energy
12:07every day. But there are, of course, like if you look then, if you analyse then the next opponent,
12:13instead of having maybe a day off to recover, you start analysing again because it's only a three,
12:19most of the times for us it was only three days in between the matches. So on the match day
12:25minus two,
12:25you want to already give the team already solutions. So basically on the day after the match you start
12:31analysing. First of all, I have to mention the background stuff, the stuff around me. It's just
12:39on the highest level, the work ethic and the quality to provide me with information, to provide ideas for me,
12:46to push with energy, to know how to influence me and how to inspire me. It's just, I'm just very,
12:57very grateful for everyone around me who helps me on a daily basis and maybe don't get the credit.
13:05Then I try to do my morning sport, which I do. And sometimes, you know, sometimes you just go on
13:13a
13:13bike and you just need a big parking lot and an ice cream in your hand for 15 minutes on
13:19a bike and then
13:19you feel like 15 years old, 15, not 50. You feel like 12 or 13 or 15 years old and
13:27you enjoy your evening
13:28in a warm summer evening for 15 minutes with the ice cream and you reconnect to the beauty of that
13:37feeling that we all have inside of us and that sometimes all it needs. Good question. I would say
13:47it's irrelevant, but I'm not sure about it. I think the players are very aware of both countries, what it
13:54means to them. If a fixture provides, like you said, so many iconic moments, I think you cannot just say
14:00it's just another football match. But as a coach, we do exactly that. Focus on what we can influence.
14:11We don't actually, me and my team between us, we don't speak about the historic events. We don't
14:17speak about the iconic moments. It's in itself iconic enough and the tension is big enough. So we try
14:26exactly the opposite and try to influence the players and what we want them to do, how to behave in
14:32different situations. We try to reduce the information. The bigger the stage gets, the bigger the tension
14:39grows. So hopefully we can simplify the messages enough that they can execute it. We try exactly what
14:46is maybe not possible, but the magnitude of the match is just what it is. I think it does not
14:56help
14:56if we engage emotionally in that. I learned I have just reinforced the belief that deep down
15:09football is still about being together and it is a team effort. I think it's not only us, I think
15:16the
15:16whole World Cup showed all superstars committed to the team idea, committed to the team's
15:26spirit committed to the idea to play for their country. It's not only our superstars.
15:35We created this special spirit in September, October, November and then we relied heavily in our
15:42nomination process on this group of players. Everyone bought into it on the very highest level and like
15:48I said, it just reassured me and reinforced the belief that we had in this group. From day one, we
16:06were quite
16:06early out here in preparation camp. It's just outstanding mentality, mostly behind closed doors.
16:14And then you see it, of course, on match days, you see the effect of it. But it was on
16:22the very highest
16:23level, the togetherness. The team is absolutely ready to give everything every single time and they simply
16:30don't give in. This is the key attributes of our team, which makes me very proud.
16:36No, but I think that's essentially what the World Cup is for, to excite the country, to excite fans and
16:45to transmit energy and make people forget their worries, make people's lives better for 90, 120 minutes
16:53and be just combined and be united and represented by a team. And I think, like I said,
17:03there's so much to love about this England squad and our squad and our team and that I'm very glad
17:11that people feel it. What was the first part? A burden. No, I don't feel a burden. I mean,
17:20we feel the tension and I will be nervous and of course that is normal, but I feel no burden.
17:27I feel
17:28what I really like is what I feel in the last days that the players are very, very competitive.
17:35They are very excited and like I said, they are hungry to play this match.
17:41I mean, the two shirts are just iconic. The historic matches, like you said, are iconic. There are iconic
17:50moments, but everyone recognizes this shirt straight away. Everyone recognizes the players straight away.
17:56So it is an absolutely beauty in a magnitude of a match, in a magnitude of an occasion.
18:08But me personally, I don't feel it as a burden. I will feel the nerves and the tension tomorrow.
18:14That is quite normal, but that just comes normal with these matches.
18:19No, I never, I never, it just doesn't work like this for me. I don't have these kind of goals
18:27and
18:27don't set these goals. It's like, I just love what I do and I'm grateful for the opportunity. I could
18:33have never imagined to have the opportunity to coach on that kind of level. This is just like, for me,
18:39being grateful and it comes with the responsibility of living up to the expectations. I am myself very
18:46competitive and I am myself the one who demands always everything, expects always everything
18:53to be perfect and to be in the best way possible. So this just comes with it. But I have
18:59never set
19:01myself goals in terms of, I need to win this title. I need to do this. I need to be
19:06the first one here.
19:07Who would I be to have these kind of goals? I just try to be, try to be the best
19:12version and the best
19:14coach possible every single day. And, and that's what I expect of myself and everything else falls
19:20into place. We influence what we can. I have to influence what I can and this is where my energy
19:25goes. Well, it just comes with it. I think the blame is on the big guys because they deliver like
19:32crazy. So the blame is on them. And you know, my answer as a coach, it is, we all strongly
19:38believe
19:39it's a team sport and no one is doing it alone. But of course, we are also relying on the,
19:44on the,
19:45on the world-class moments of world-class players. Two of them that you mentioned have delivered. I think
19:52anyone in our team can deliver an extra moment anytime. This is just how, how this game is. And I
19:58think like the, the big names and the big stars have delivered on a, on a, on a new kind
20:05of level for, for,
20:06for their teams and for their country. So fair enough. Um, that's just the world we live in.
20:13I think no one has, I don't feel any envy. I don't feel any jealousy for sure. Not in our
20:18camp.
20:19It is just, uh, it is also down to the big players because the big names, I can only speak
20:26for our
20:26camp, how they buy into the team spirit, how they show up in training, how they lift the spirit of
20:33players that are, that are maybe not selected, that are like a bit like a down on match days,
20:38like how they bring them back together and, and, and share the spotlight behind closed doors. It's just,
20:45that's, that's what makes it in the end special. And that's why no one is jealous. No one, no one,
20:52no one holds any bad feelings about it. We know that, that, uh, our guys can produce special moments.
20:59Everyone is, is, is ready to, to, to buy into that. And, and the, the big boys do it as
21:04well.
21:05You talk to the one person who is not away and aware until tomorrow's warmup and which color we play,
21:11but you can, you can, Argentina plays in blue and we blame white. And that is because Argentina is super,
21:20or this a lucky shirt or they chose this. No, it's cause we're a teammate.
21:24No, I would have done the same. I would have done the same. Uh, if, if there was any superstition,
21:30uh,
21:30combined with it, I would have done the same. So, so, so credit to them. I was not aware of
21:35that.
21:35I, I have my superstitious routines and I have my, my, my routines and you can call it superstitious or,
21:42or being superstitious or routines. I will not, I will not tell you because another superstition is
21:47that if I tell you it will not work. So I can't, I can't, but of course we have routines
21:54that keep you,
21:55keep you grounded and calm through the day and that will not change. But we have of course also
22:01our lucky charms and, and, um, yeah, these things are just a normal and high level sport.
