00:00on her 14th birthday a girl wished for a puppy the next day when she came home from school
00:04a puppy
00:04was actually in her yard she tried to grab it but the little dog nimbly dodged her
00:08so she came up
00:08with a plan she gently threw her jacket over the puppy then happily carried it to the hospital to
00:13show her mom her mom named the puppy socks and told the girl that if she decided to keep him
00:17she would have to follow 10 promises to him she had to be patient and love him with all her
00:20heart
00:21because a dog's life lasts only a short 10 years so she had to be socks's best friend
00:25and when his
00:26life came to an end she had to be right there by his side 10 years seemed endless to the
00:29girl but
00:30she agreed to the promises anyway the next day her mom took her and socks to the beach and they
00:34had
00:34the most wonderful day watching the girl and socks run and play her mom smiled contentedly but just a
00:39few days later her mom was gone for good the grief crushed the girl she stayed in bed for two
00:43whole
00:44days and even ended up with a stiff neck socks thought it looked funny and started tilting his
00:48head just like her the girl laughed and played along and then came a soft pop her neck didn't
00:52hurt anymore little by little socks pulled the girl out of her sadness and their days grew warm
00:56again every time socks saw a rainbow he'd leap up excitedly and try to take a bite out
01:00of it but the
01:01good times didn't last her dad had to move to another city for work and their new place didn
01:05't
01:05allow pets with no other choice the girl wrote her phone number on socks collar and left him with a
01:09good
01:09friend for a while sitting in the car she felt a heavy ache at leaving him behind watching socks chase
01:14the car with everything he had she couldn't stop the tears from falling at his new owner's house
01:18socks was tied up outside he struggled until the rope snapped and set off to find the girl
01:22guided by memory socks made his way back to their old home but the house was empty then he remembered
01:26that the last time he saw the girl she was on a streetcar so he hopped onto a
01:29streetcar too which
01:30gave the passengers quite a scare luckily his collar had the phone number on it the police got
01:34in touch with her dad and the girl finally got socks back seeing such a happy reunion her dad
01:39decided to quit his job and take them back to the little house full of memories where he opened
01:43a small clinic nearby 10 years went by the girl graduated from college and landed a job at the zoo
01:47but she grew busier and busier barely finding time to go home even when she did make it
01:51home once a month she often shooed socks out of her room because she was so stressed
01:55only her dad kept the aging socks company the girl never noticed that socks no longer jumped
01:59for rainbows he had grown truly old then one day socks couldn't even make it up the steps
02:03to the
02:04house that's when the girl finally realized they had been together for 10 years a few days later
02:08her dad called to say socks wasn't going to make it but she had an animal surgery scheduled and
02:12she
02:12stood frozen unable to decide it wasn't until her father reminded her of the promises she had made
02:16to socks 10 years ago she immediately rushed home she gathered the dying socks into her arms
02:21her dad handed her a scrapbook her mom had left behind which recorded the 10 promises between her
02:25and socks she realized she had kept very few of them in tears she apologized to socks as she read
02:30the
02:30last promise socks slowly closed his eyes and gently rested his paw on her hand she called out his name
02:35only then did she realize that those long 10 years had truly flown by while cleaning out the doghouse
02:40her dad found socks's hidden treasure a stack of photos of him and the girl maybe during all those
02:45days
02:45when she was away socks got through one lonely night after another with those pictures tucked
02:49among them was a letter from her mom socks will take my place and keep you company through your
02:53wonderful childhood do you like dogs tell us in the comments
