📰 THE FULL STORY

New York prosecutors are expected to bring new charges against former Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores over the alleged torture of Americans held in Venezuelan government custody. An announcement come as soon as Thursday. The charges relate to the wrongful detention of more than a dozen US citizens in Venezuelan prisons during Maduro's rule.

Investigators have also discussed charging several additional people for their alleged role in the torture of Americans. Officials said Wednesday that Maduro and his wife are expected to face the new counts.

Maduro and Flores were captured in a US military raid in January from the presidential palace in Caracas. They were brought to the United States, where they pleaded not guilty to narcoterrorism conspiracy and other charges, including counts related to possession of machine guns. Both are held without bail in New York.

Flores is expected to appear at a hearing Thursday, where her lawyer will ask that she be moved to house arrest. Maduro's lawyer is challenging the legality of his arrest and arguing that he should have immunity.

Left coverage foregrounds the alleged victims, framing the case around more than a dozen US citizens wrongfully detained and tortured in Venezuelan prisons during Maduro's rule, and stresses that prosecutors extend charges to several additional accused participants. It also highlights the defense posture, detailing Flores's bid for house arrest and Maduro's challenge to the legality of his arrest and his immunity argument. The framing centers accountability for detained Americans while giving space to the procedural fight over the defendants. (CNN)
