๐Ÿ“ฐ THE FULL STORY

Israel marked the third anniversary of the Hamas-led October 7 attack with memorial events across the country. Silent tributes were held at the Nova festival site and at the Kfar Aza kibbutz, where the BBC reported that 64 residents were killed and 19 taken hostage. A national memorial drew thousands to Tel Aviv's Yarkon Park. It was co-hosted by former hostage Eli Sharabi, with opposition figures Gadi Eisenkot and Naftali Bennett in attendance. Bennett called the attack a colossal failure of the state.

Netanyahu lit a memorial candle for every victim and vowed to hold all the murderers to account. According to the BBC, he said Israel had killed 4,000 of the 6,000 Palestinians who infiltrated Israel on October 7. Hamas issued a defiant statement calling October 7 a glorious day.

France24 reported that the attack killed 1,221 people and saw 251 hostages taken, and that Israel's offensive has since killed more than 74,200 people in Gaza, according to Gaza's health ministry. Strikes on Gaza continued during the anniversary. AFP reporters heard strikes where Gaza officials said five people were killed, despite a ceasefire in place for the past year. The Washington Post reported that a funeral was held for mourners in Gaza City on Thursday, and noted that almost a year has passed since President Donald Trump declared the fighting over and peace in the Middle East achieved, yet strikes and deaths continue to climb.

The BBC noted that this is the first anniversary with no hostages remaining in Gaza, though the ceasefire has not brought lasting peace. More than 1,460 Palestinians and at least seven Israeli soldiers have been killed in the strip since it took effect. World leaders including Germany's Merz, UK PM Andy Burnham, the EU's von der Leyen, and Trump issued statements marking the anniversary.

โฌ…๏ธ HOW THE LEFT COVERS IT
Left coverage foregrounds that the war has not ended despite claims of peace, stressing that Israeli strikes grind on and Gaza deaths climb almost a year after Trump declared the fighting over. It centers Gaza's civilians, opening on a funeral in Gaza City, and the human cost of the ongoing offensive. It also highlights the personal toll on former hostages adjusting to freedom, while giving less emphasis to the memorial politics and leaders' statements that other sides foreground.
