GAZA CEASEFIRE: ISRAEL AND HAMAS AGREE TO TRUMP'S PEACE PLAN
On October 9, 2025, Israel and Hamas agreed to the first phase of US President Donald Trump's 20-point Gaza peace plan. The agreement called for the release of the remaining hostages held in Gaza and the start of a ceasefire, with Israeli troops pulling back to agreed lines as part of the deal. Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey acted as the key mediators throughout the negotiations, shuttling between Israeli and Hamas officials to finalise the terms. Celebrations erupted across Gaza and at Hostages Square in Tel Aviv as news of the agreement spread, with the families of hostages and displaced Gazans alike expressing relief after two years of war. In the twelve months since, the ceasefire became the starting point for a longer reconstruction and negotiation process, with the United States, Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey continuing to mediate follow-up talks over reconstruction funding and security arrangements across the Gaza Strip throughout 2026.

NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE: LASZLO KRASZNAHORKAI WINS
Hungarian novelist Laszlo Krasznahorkai was named winner of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature. The announcement came during Nobel week, following the science prizes awarded earlier that week by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Karolinska Institute. Krasznahorkai, celebrated for dense, apocalyptic novels including "Satantango" and "The Melancholy of Resistance," saw his win draw praise from across the literary world, including fellow authors and critics who had long tipped him for the prize. Since the announcement, demand for English translations of his novels surged, and his work became the subject of renewed academic and critical attention throughout the following year.
