The man who shot an incredible video of a roof blowing off a hotel in Pensacola talks with AccuWeather about the unbelievable experience.
Transcript
00:00That looks like significant damage behind you, Allie.
00:06Well, you know what's crazy?
00:07My photographer, Andy, he was scrolling through social media and all of a sudden this insane video.
00:12If we can, can we take to this video?
00:15Take a look at this.
00:16Jordan Glass, who is actually a radio host here in town, local to Pensacola.
00:22Yeah, this roof completely blows off a local hotel here in town.
00:27He was recording at the radio station here.
00:30All of a sudden he pans over and he goes, oh my gosh, look at this.
00:36Yeah, really quickly.
00:37And we're going to bring him in for a second to explain what he saw.
00:40But look at the damage here.
00:41If we can come back live now, look at this.
00:44I mean, it really is remarkable.
00:46The people inside, we're still waiting to hear if everyone inside is okay.
00:49But you could see some people out here assessing the damage of their cars.
00:53This guy just pulled his car out.
00:55So a lot more stories to be told here.
00:57But before that, I think the most important one is the guy who actually shot the video, Jordan.
01:03How's it going?
01:04More importantly, how is it going for you?
01:06That video was insane.
01:07Can you walk me through that?
01:08Yeah, so actually we'd been doing storm coverage.
01:10I started about 10 a.m. this morning on Cat Country 98.7, a local country station here in Pensacola.
01:15We were doing storm coverage.
01:16Myself and Captain Chris, our afternoon guy, we did it until about 6 o'clock this evening.
01:20Another group took over in the studio.
01:21We just happened to come out to kind of look and see what the start of the storm was going
01:24to be.
01:25We noticed as the strong winds were coming through, it was actually this restaurant right over here.
01:29Those roof was kind of tipping off on that one a little bit.
01:32We just kind of started filming it.
01:33And I just panned over right at the right moment, right as the roof blew off the hotel behind us.
01:38I need to know what were you thinking in that moment?
01:40I'm sure you were also saying, okay, if this is happening here, what must be happening across the entire city?
01:45Yeah, absolutely.
01:46I think when we saw that, we were like, okay, what is the rest of the city looking like?
01:49If that's happening here, especially towards the beach where the storm surge was coming in,
01:53and it was a little bit rougher on the weather coming in with that just push coming off with the
01:56speed that it's moving at.
01:57So when we saw the roof come off, we were like, okay, just how bad are we going to see?
02:01What are we going to see when the sun comes up?
02:02Because we're all staying at the station tonight.
02:04What are we going to see when the sun comes up and we actually go to go home tomorrow?
02:07What is that going to look like for us?
02:08And seeing this for the first time, I know that you've been working, obviously, so you've had a job to
02:13do yourself.
02:13But I'm curious, now that you see it for yourself, like, what goes through your head?
02:18I mean, it's wild.
02:18Yeah, it's crazy.
02:20I mean, coming over here to meet you guys was the first time I really kind of came over here.
02:22I was waiting for the morning.
02:23I was going to say, I'll just go over to check it out in the morning before I head home.
02:26And just coming over here and just seeing it this close, it is absolutely insane.
02:30I mean, the video is crazy, but seeing it, just the damage that it's done is even crazier.
02:34You know, and you took that video during the day.
02:36I think what's scarier, you know, we know that, you know, a landfall has now happened.
02:42We always talk about that when landfalls with hurricanes are at nighttime, it makes it that much scarier.
02:47What we don't know is, well, we can see debris throughout the town, but a lot of that won't be
02:52discovered until tomorrow morning.
02:54So to sit with this right now, you know, unfortunately, nothing's really going to be done until tomorrow.
02:59But I'm sure for you here in town, are you hopeful that crews can really get behind this?
03:03And however long it may take, that can happen.
03:06Yeah, and that's one of the things that we've been pushing on the air throughout the afternoon is making sure
03:09that once the storm does blow over and it clears up a little bit,
03:12we want to remind people, stay off the roads.
03:14I know we'll have family and friends across town that you want to go check on.
03:17Still give it a little bit of time before you do that.
03:19That way the crews can have access to get to spots like this or even some of the roads that's
03:23been broken down by branches or power lines that they can get to.
03:26They can clean that up so everybody can get where they need to be to check on who they need
03:29to check on safely.
03:29I completely agree with you.
03:31And obviously we're hoping that for those that are watching right now at home that they're staying safe, obviously, here
03:36in town.
03:36We know that this storm is far from over.
03:39But certainly here conditions have started to clear up.
03:42You know, we aren't seeing the rain that we saw earlier.
03:44We aren't seeing the crazy wind gusts.
03:47I mean, wow, talk about wind gusts that we saw earlier today.
03:50But last question for you.
03:51Do you have a storm chaser maybe in your job title in the future?
03:54You know, we never know.
03:56You never know.
03:56This might have unlocked a new track for me.
03:58I don't know.
03:58You might have to.
03:59Jordan, thank you so much.
04:00Hey, Bernie, before we toss it back, Andy, you want to come with me really quick?
04:04Let's get a little closer if we can.
04:06I mean, this really is remarkable.
04:08I just want to show you some of the damage here.
04:11It really is crazy.
04:12Let's get a little bit closer to it.
04:15I mean, this is really, really, really just devastating to see again.
04:20We know that there were people inside of this hotel.
04:23Oh, wow.
04:24That's the hotel.
04:25Can you hear me, Bernie?
04:26Yeah.
04:26Is that the hotel that we saw in the video?
04:31Yeah, this is the hotel here.
04:32The same one right behind us.
04:33My goodness.
04:34Okay.
04:35Go ahead, Allie.
04:38Yep, yep.
04:38This is the exact same hotel right behind us here.
04:41We know that people were inside at the time.
04:44You can see that tarp, the roof of the building, completely knocked over onto homes here.
04:48Or, excuse me, onto cars here.
04:50One of those car owners just was able to pull his car out from the rubble here.
04:56Really remarkable.
04:57That doesn't have, I mean, it certainly has some significant damage to the front bumper.
05:01But it isn't as worse as what we were originally thinking for this car.
05:05But just really, really crazy to see here.
05:08And, you know, again, while we've seen a lot of debris here in town, let's go back over
05:12this way so hopefully you can still see us, Bernie.
05:15Yeah, I got you, Allie.
05:16I got you.
05:17This might actually end up being one of the craziest videos that we'll see out of Pensacola.
05:25You know, I think that there's a lot of debris throughout town.
05:28But Jordan really, really hit it right at the right time.
05:31I mean, that video is really insane.
05:33I think once we're done being live with you, the next thing that Andy and I will work to
05:37determine is if everyone was able to get out safely.
05:41That's number one most important thing here.
05:43But then number two, I mean, certainly it's going to take some time for this building to
05:47be cleaned up.
05:48It also sounds like maybe this hotel wasn't just for hotel guests.
05:51Maybe that this is like a long-term residency for some folks, too.
05:56So there might be people that actually have homes inside of these rooms here.
06:00So that'll all be things that will work to determine, you know, over the next couple
06:04of hours here.
06:05All right, Allie, so far, ground zero with this storm.
06:09So far from the damage has been in the Pensacola area on the western side.
06:15Allie Reed, hey, good stuff, Allie.
06:18Stay safe and, you know, hopefully everything gets straightened out there as quick as possible.
06:24Allie Reed, we'll talk to you in a little bit.
06:25Thanks, Allie.
