From Navarre Beach, Florida, Dr. Reed Timmer reports on Hurricane Isaias as outer rainbands approach the coast. The major hurricane is forecast to make landfall this evening with 120-mph sustained winds.
Transcript
00:00Hurricane Isaiya strengthened overnight into a major hurricane, has maximum sustained winds of 120 miles an hour offshore, central pressure
00:09down to 959 millibars.
00:11We expect a life-threatening storm surge from this major hurricane. It is forecast to make landfall as a major
00:17hurricane between about 8 and 10 p.m. this evening.
00:20We're starting to get the outer bands already, and the tornado threat is about to increase.
00:25So tornado watch is expected very soon if it's not already issued as that outer band is beginning to approach
00:31the coastline of the Florida Panhandle.
00:33Those are going to separate into supercell storms as that dry slot outside of the inner core of the hurricane
00:39wraps around the eastern periphery.
00:41That creates a dry over moist profile, allows for a little bit of instability to get supercell storms,
00:47and we expect a prolific tornado outbreak from Hurricane Isaias from before, during, and after landfall as it moves off
00:55to the north.
00:56That includes eastern Alabama and the portions of Georgia.
00:59Big-time rainfall as well with those feeder bands, supercell storms with a strongly wind-shared environment in the eastern
01:05semicircle of the tropical cyclone.
01:08But we are initially targeting the inner core as it's approaching forecast to make landfall this evening.
01:13Definitely take this storm seriously. It's strengthened into a major hurricane.
01:18It is coming in with life-threatening impacts, and it's going to gradually worsen as we go through the afternoon
01:24hours into the evening.
