00:01In 2023, the show Llama was conceived through a combination of Zoe Dunwoody thinking about her biological clock ticking, her
00:11mother's love of llamas and her grandmother's postpartum mental health.
00:16Her family believes the late matriarch had undiagnosed postnatal depression, which evolved into psychosis.
00:23At that time, which was, I don't know, I guess the 1930s, 50s vibes, it would have been, you know,
00:31a bit of a, like, brush it under the carpet sort of thing.
00:35It's not the choreographer's intention to be taken as the gospel of perinatal mental health, but she does draw inspiration
00:43from it.
00:44Having a baby while developing the concept, deepening the dancer's connection to the themes.
00:49I do wear a mask when I'm a mum some days. I just got to put that llama head on
00:54and, like, you know, hope people are distracted by that and not the fact that I haven't showered today.
00:59The show's due date looking like late 2027. Dunwoody received a $30,000 grant from the Australian Dance Theatre and
01:07Create SA to develop the work, investing in a composer, costume and props, as well as performers.
01:14It's allowed me to explore really serious themes in a way that contains lightness as well.
01:20It's hoped llama will put the spotlight on the postpartum experience and give a glimpse into the world of motherhood.
