00:45Japan is reeling from a wave of cyberattacks.
00:49The latest disruption has cut off access to critical online services at companies across the country.
00:56The digital chaos follows unauthorized access at a cloud platform.
01:03IDF Frontier, a subsidiary of Telecom Dayan SoftBank, operates the platform.
01:13On Wednesday, it reported a ransomware attack targeting its cloud service system.
01:20It said 495 companies and organizations were affected.
01:26A logistics subsidiary of food producer Nisui is one of the victims.
01:32It says it can't receive or ship items at any of its 17 distribution centers across Japan.
01:41Public services have been disrupted, too.
01:45People have not been able to access websites for the local government and police headquarters in Ibaraki Prefecture.
01:54IDC Frontier says it has shut down the affected system to prevent further damage.
02:00It's also checking whether any information has been leaked.
02:08Also caught up in the disruption is the Tokyo-based firm Odo Server.
02:14It operates an online used car trading platform for Odo dealers.
02:20But its website is down, and staff have received more than 200 inquiries from people who can't log in.
02:29Still, the company says there's no risk of data leaks as customer information is not stored on the website.
02:39Executive Officer Ueyanagi Takahiro says he is now well aware that his business could be directly targeted by hackers and
02:49hopes to take countermeasures quickly.
02:52The SoftBank subsidiary hit by the cyber attack has told the company that restoring data on the cloud service will
03:01be difficult.
03:05We had a backup of our own, so that's some small mercy.
03:11Company staff are trying to get their website working using data from their backup.
03:19Now, business leaders from Japan and the United States have called for common rules on artificial intelligence in their countries.
03:26The executives made the proposal for their governments in a joint statement adopted at the end of the annual Japan
03:32-U.S. business conference on Wednesday.
03:35They proposed building infrastructure that supports AI development and the creation of common rules.
03:41Strengthening supply chains for key minerals and semiconductor parts for economic security is also included.
03:48U.S. Chair David Geckler said technological advancement improves people's lives, but he expressed concern.
03:56But now it's happening much faster than it's happened in previous cycles.
04:01And so I think this calls for more dialogue, more cooperation, more discussion.
04:09Japan's counterpart Takashima Makoto said they'll call for governance corresponding to the degree of risk and specific to each use
04:17case.
04:17The United States and China are ahead in the race to develop AI.
04:21The two countries say they agreed to launch a dialogue on AI at their summit in September.
04:28U.S. AI company Anthropic says it'll allow more users to access its leading-edge Claude Mythos model.
04:36Now, more companies and organizations can apply to use the AI agent for so-called defensive work in their computer
04:43systems.
04:43These include universities, government entities, and infrastructure-related firms, such as power companies.
04:50Access tiers are to be separated according to the intended use of the AI model.
04:55For the highest tier, the company says it's screening applicants in cooperation with the U.S. government.
05:01The AI developer has been limiting access over concern the model's advanced capabilities could allow it to be used in
05:07cyberattacks.
05:08As of April this year, access to Claude Mythos was limited to about 50 companies and organizations.
05:15That expanded in June to about 200, including Japanese financial institutions.
05:33The U.S. midterm elections are less than one month away.
05:38Voters are set to deliver a verdict on the Trump administration.
05:42Analysts and media outlets say the Republican Party faces an uphill battle, even in states long regarded as strongholds.
05:52And the reasons appear to extend beyond soaring prices and U.S. military operations against Iran.
05:58NHK World's Shiori Sugiyama has more.
06:06On October 1st, President Donald Trump appeared at a rally in the southern state of Texas.
06:12Long regarded Republican stronghold, the state now has a closely contested race for a U.S. Senate seat.
06:19U.S.A.! U.S.A.!
06:22And I think we're going to win.
06:24Trump has recently been traveling to states where Republicans traditionally enjoy strong support, delivering a series of campaign speeches.
06:32The Associated Press says the appearances underscore the mounting challenges facing Republicans.
06:39In Texas, the president sought to drive home a key message.
06:43We have the strongest border in our country's history.
06:47And for the last 17 months, as I said, zero illegal immigrants have crossed to our country.
06:52The report in Texas for the administration appears to be wavering due to its immigration policies.
06:58Critics say one reason is the immigration crackdown, which they say has gone too far.
07:05This footage was recorded in September.
07:11A man is ordered out of a vehicle by immigration authorities.
07:15He appears to have been shot in the back.
07:17The Venezuelan national is said to be in serious condition.
07:22In July, a Mexican man died after he was shot by immigration authorities.
07:29Hispanic residents make up about 40 percent of the population in Texas.
07:34Their support played a key role in Trump's victory in the state in the 2024 presidential election.
07:41But now, more people in the community are expressing concerns over the administration's immigration policies.
07:47Just because of the color of our skin, they're going at us.
07:51I have to carry my passport with me to prove I am a U.S. citizen, just because I am
07:58of Mexican descent.
08:03At this construction site, fencing has been put up around the property.
08:07It's intended to prevent immigration authorities from entering.
08:12It feels a lot better in here than it does outside, bro.
08:16Mario Guerrero, who manages the site, says some workers are choosing to not show up,
08:21fearing detention by immigration authorities despite having valid work permits.
08:28With labor in short supply, construction projects, including housing developments,
08:33are taking about twice as long as usual to complete.
08:36Guerrero says it's beginning to take a toll on his business.
08:40And you have ice enforcement that is hurting the construction industry.
08:45I believe that this administration already has done the damage.
08:47And I did vote for Mr. Trump.
08:49I'm not going to vote for him again or his administration.
08:52Because we haven't been spoken to with the truth.
08:55The issue was a big talking point at a meeting of Hispanic business leaders.
08:59We definitely think labor is probably one of the biggest issues.
09:03And I think we all know a lot of reasons why that's happening.
09:06We talked about we have to use our voice.
09:11The trend is not limited to Texas.
09:13In a growing number of states once considered safely Republican,
09:17Democrats are putting up an increasingly strong challenge.
09:22With just weeks to go, the battle for votes is heating up.
09:26Shiori Sugiyama, NHK World, Los Angeles.
09:32Now to the Middle East.
09:33Anti-government Houthi rebels in Yemen claim to have carried out ballistic missile and drone strikes
09:39on airports in Saudi Arabia.
09:41The attacks reportedly killed three people and injured more than 30.
09:45Saudi aviation authorities say airports in the capital, Riyadh,
09:49and the southwestern city of Abha were targeted on Tuesday and Wednesday.
09:53Meanwhile, multiple U.S. media outlets report U.S. President Trump
09:57is considering resuming attacks on Iran ahead of next month's midterm elections.
10:02The Atlantic magazine quotes administration officials as saying the White House had asked
10:07the Department of Defense to drop strike options against Iranian targets.
10:11The Atlantic says those in favor believe further action could allow Trump to declare strength
10:17and some sort of victory, giving Republicans momentum heading into the election.
10:22News site Axios says the Pentagon reportedly instructed U.S. Central Command several days earlier
10:28to conclude preparations for resuming combat in Iran.
10:32Axios cites U.S. and Israeli sources as saying operations could take place before Israeli elections
10:38on October 27th with the likely participation of Israel's military.
10:46People across Israel have gathered to mourn the more than 370 people killed
10:52when Hamas attacked an outdoor music festival three years ago.
10:58The Islamic group launched the massive surprise attack in Israel on October 7th, 2023.
11:06The group, based in the Gaza Strip in the Palestinian territories,
11:10killed about 1,200 people in total across various locations.
11:17A memorial ceremony was held at the music festival site on Wednesday.
11:23Participants, including bereaved families, observed a moment of silence.
11:31A woman who lost her son expressed her lingering sorrow.
11:36She said he sometimes appears with a smile in her dreams,
11:40and in those moments, she becomes a mother again.
11:46Another woman who lost her daughter and her fiancé said it is heartbreaking to visit the site.
11:54What is the most important to us is that people will not forget what happened on October 7th.
12:02Ahead of the ceremony, Israeli President Isaac Herzog spoke to the media.
12:10We have the inherent right to defend ourselves and fight terror.
12:14But we yearn for peace, and we want our neighbors to live in peace as well.
12:22Herzog called on the international community to work together to disarm Hamas for regional peace.
12:30Now, the coordinated attacks triggered the conflict in Gaza.
12:33Health authorities there say over 74,000 people have died since the fighting began,
12:38and over 1,400 have been killed since the ceasefire went into effect a year ago.
12:43The hostilities continue to loom over Israel's future and, of course, its politics.
12:51For more on this, our colleague Tashiro Kyoko spoke with NHK World's Jerusalem correspondent, Mori Haruka.
13:02Israel has continued attacking Gaza, even after reaching a ceasefire agreement.
13:07Has it made progress when it comes to weakening Hamas?
13:13The government says yes.
13:15Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave a speech at the UN General Assembly last month.
13:22He told it the result of the military operation, saying it dealt a heavy blow to Hamas.
13:30Two of its top officials have been killed.
13:34And the Israeli military says it will continue killing high-ranking members
13:39and destroying Hamas facilities, like underground tunnels.
13:44At 4 October 7th, Defense Minister Israel Katz says about 6,000 people breached Israel during the attack.
13:55As of last week, he says about 4,000 of them have been killed.
14:01The military has ordered to kill the rest.
14:04So Netanyahu is framing all this as a big success, and has vowed to keep going, until Hamas has been
14:15completely destroyed.
14:18But public opinion doesn't seem to be on his side.
14:22An Israeli think tank released an opinion poll laid last month.
14:46You can't imagine those numbers, Netanyahu wants to see, especially so close to an election.
14:55Right, so let's get into that.
14:57Israel will hold a general election on October 27th.
15:01How has October 7th changed the political landscape?
15:07Obviously, it's had major repercussions.
15:10It's not an exaggeration to call it the election's biggest issue,
15:15and that too, in part, to reports released last month.
15:20They claim the President of the United Arab Emirates told Netanyahu about a possible attack,
15:28over a week before October 7th.
15:33Netanyahu reportedly did not act on that warning.
15:38He strongly denies the allegations.
15:40The opposition has seized on that story.
15:45One party in particular, Yashal, has gained significant momentum.
15:51It's led by Gadi Eisenkot, a former Israel Defense Force Chief of Staff.
15:58And it's now overtaken Netanyahu's record party in the polls.
16:04And if there is a change of government and Eisenkot becomes prime minister,
16:09will we see a big shift in Israeli policy?
16:14Yes and no.
16:17Take national security.
16:19That probably would not change much under Eisenkot.
16:23On social media, he says,
16:26anything short of the complete military and political destruction of Hamas would be a failure.
16:34He has also said that less posts by Iran and Hezbollah need to be eliminated.
16:41But he may take a different tack on foreign policy.
16:46In an interview, he criticizes Netanyahu for isolating Israel from the international community.
16:55Eisenkot says that's not what he wants to do.
16:58So he may try to take a more cooperative approach with Israel's neighbors.
17:05It's worth noting that, even with the polls,
17:09we still don't know who will form Israel's next government.
17:14Once the results are finalized,
17:17the president will ask a party most likely to be able to form a coalition
17:22and present its cabinet.
17:25So even after the vote,
17:28we will have to wait and see how those coalition talks develop.
17:34Only then,
17:35we will truly know what direction Israel's politics will take.
17:43We move now to what's making headlines in the Asia-Pacific
17:47with Cholas Pansan Narula in our Bangkok studio.
17:52Malaysia's prime ministers pledged support for Myanmar's full participation
17:56in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
18:00Myanmar was banned from sending leaders and ministers to the bloc's main summit
18:04after the military took power in a coup five years ago.
18:09We and our part in Malaysia will do whatever is possible
18:14to make sure that we enhance this collaboration
18:17and ultimately take Myanmar as part of our community of nations
18:26without prejudice and particularly in the context of ASEAN.
18:31Anwar made the comment after a meeting on Thursday with Min Ong Lai,
18:35who represents Myanmar's military-backed government.
18:38They also agreed to deepen cooperation in areas such as trade and investment.
18:42Min Ong Lai led the 2021 coup as a senior military general.
18:47He was elected president by parliament in April this year
18:50following a general election that excluded pro-democracy parties.
18:55Legitimacy of the vote has been criticized by pro-democracy groups
18:58and some Western countries.
19:00Anwar and Min Ong Lai also agreed to accelerate the repatriation of refugees
19:04who have fled Myanmar.
19:06But the United Nations and human rights organizations have voiced concerns
19:10that the ongoing conflict and the di-humanitarian situation
19:14make it unsafe to return.
19:17India's main opposition leader has been briefly detained by police
19:21during a protest over a controversial revision of voter lists.
19:26Rahul Gandhi was detained by police on Wednesday
19:28as he marched towards a designated protest site in the capital, New Delhi,
19:33along with other opposition lawmakers that were later released.
19:38This is all panic reaction.
19:40This is all fear.
19:42We are going to be pro-democracy.
19:44Mark my level.
19:47Protests have been taking place around India.
19:50Local media reported last month that the chief election commissioner
19:54may have overseen a revision of voter rolls
19:56after removing 130 million names without approval from other commissioners.
20:02The opposition is demanding the poll chief's resignation.
20:04They accuse him of manipulating voter lists to favor the ruling
20:08Bharatya Janata Party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
20:12The government and the commission reject the allegations.
20:15The commission reportedly says it was trying to identify ineligible voters
20:19and prevent illegal immigrants from voting.
20:24Police here in Thailand say officers disguised as garbage workers
20:28raided an alleged drug network.
20:30It was the latest operation by the country's undercover investigation team.
20:36Footage released by police shows investigators riding on garbage trucks
20:40as they search through neighborhoods.
20:48Police say they raided five locations on Wednesday in and around Bangkok.
20:53Six suspects were arrested on allegations of possessing and distributing illegal drugs.
20:58Investigators seized more than 1,600 methamphetamine tablets and other narcotics.
21:04The operation involved a team of officers specializing in covert investigations.
21:09Police explain that such methods are effective in densely populated communities
21:13where it's difficult to enter without raising suspicion.
21:23A one-of-a-kind cosplay contest is drawing thousands to a cultural landmark in South Korea.
21:30Yes, the dress-like-a-museum exhibit event has exploded in popularity
21:35and thrust the major museum's collection of ancient sculptures and relics onto the national stage.
21:41NHK World's Kim Chan-ju reports.
21:45This is no ordinary costume contest.
21:50Every one of these designs is based as faithfully as possible on a museum artifact,
21:57many of them centuries old.
22:00You can see the antique objects in the corner of your screen.
22:05They included this porcelain fish, a polished stone dagger, and these interesting bronze bells.
22:20This entry is a recreation of a national treasure known as the horse and rider shaped vessel.
22:28The sculpted earthenware containers were likely created between the 5th and 6th century.
22:36The unusual contest exploded in popularity last year after going viral on social media, with
22:44the winners even making TV appearances.
22:48This year, hundreds of teams tried out, and thousands of fans showed up to cheer them on.
22:57Entering the contest involves choosing an exhibit, putting together a costume in painstaking
23:04detail, and developing a five-minute performance.
23:10The whimsical idea is meant to draw in more museum visitors and keep their attention.
23:20People tend to see museums as places where old and ancient artifacts are simply displayed.
23:26One of our goals was to bring the museum to life.
23:34But why are people so eager to join that mission?
23:39Lee Dae-yang devoted several weeks of his spare time to designing and pushing together his
23:44costume.
23:47Lee Dae-yang, I'm applying gold leaf to enhance the luster and elevate the level of detail.
23:52I'm going for a more polished finish.
23:56Lee Dae-yang is transforming himself into the pensive bodhisattva, a gilt bronze statue that's
24:03nearly a meter tall, which was created between the 6th and 7th century.
24:10Lee is used to cosplay, but this is a brand new challenge, one that takes immense research
24:18and creative vision.
24:22I imagined how the statue might walk if it came to life, what kind of expression it might
24:27have, how it might move its hands and so on.
24:30I spent a lot of time thinking about these things and how I could incorporate them into
24:34my stage performance.
24:37Lee has even attached wheels beneath the pedestal so it can rotate, allowing the audience to view
24:45the statue from different angles, just like they would in a museum.
24:50And he's taken care to practice the distinctive expression of the bodhisattva, known for its
24:57contemplative smile.
25:04Lee's dedication paid off.
25:10Lee's dedication paid off.
25:11He advanced to the finals last month and nabbed second place out of a whopping 275 applicants.
25:19But he ended up winning more than just glory.
25:25Lee's dedication paid off.
25:26Lee's dedication paid off.
25:27This was the first time I researched a cultural artifact so deeply.
25:31I learned about its history, how it was made, and even the journey it took before ending up
25:36here.
25:42In an age of endless entertainment options, the contest has achieved something new and profound.
25:50It's managed to capture the attention of the masses and bring ancient history back online.
25:57Kim Chan-ju, NHK World, Seoul.
26:00Kim Chan-ju, NHK World.
26:26C'est aussi très cool.
26:28Oui, c'est vraiment un moyen pour les jeunes
26:31qui se sont excités sur leur histoire.
26:35All right, maintenant, nous allons voir les forecastes
