00:01:47I'm coming out!
00:01:56Hey, are you okay?
00:02:03Is she okay?
00:02:04Yes.
00:02:04Is she going to be okay?
00:02:05Now listen, you've got to get checked out, all right?
00:02:08You've got to get checked out.
00:02:08All right, all right.
00:02:09Fine, sure.
00:02:10Okay!
00:02:11Yeah.
00:02:19Tess!
00:02:21Hey, sweetheart.
00:02:22Come here, you.
00:02:24All right, you two.
00:02:25Maddie, please go upstairs and start on your homework.
00:02:28You have cheer practice tonight.
00:02:29Yeah, listen to your mother.
00:02:36So, want to tell me why you're home and not at the station?
00:02:39Chief suggested that I come home and relax because I took in a lot of smoke today.
00:02:45Oh my gosh, Brian, are you okay?
00:02:47I'm fine.
00:02:48Did you go to the hospital?
00:02:49What did the doctor say?
00:02:50I am fine.
00:02:51I'm fine.
00:02:51There was a woman inside the building.
00:02:53I ran in after her.
00:02:54We both made it out.
00:02:56What happened?
00:02:57Is she okay?
00:02:57She wasn't, but the medics helped her and took her to the hospital.
00:03:00Sean called a few minutes ago, said she's going to recover just fine.
00:03:06Brian, honey.
00:03:08You saved a life.
00:03:35Hey, buddy.
00:03:41Are you leaving?
00:03:42Yeah.
00:03:44Stay down here all night.
00:03:48Yeah.
00:03:51I fell asleep watching TV.
00:03:54Mom said you saved a life yesterday.
00:03:57That true?
00:03:58Yeah.
00:04:01That's cool.
00:04:03Well, I got to go before I'm late.
00:04:06All right.
00:04:06I'll see you later, buddy.
00:04:10Dad, one thing.
00:04:11Do you maybe think we could talk about the army a little bit more when I get home?
00:04:14There's nothing left to talk about, son.
00:04:16But, Dad, I...
00:04:17There's no buts!
00:04:24You better get to school before you're late.
00:04:41Hey, see you, bro.
00:04:42See you, bro.
00:04:47Bye, Clay.
00:04:49Bye, Clay.
00:04:51Hey, Mr. Cook.
00:04:54I better get going.
00:04:59Sorry about the tree, Mr. Cook.
00:05:06What was that?
00:05:08What was what?
00:05:09That.
00:05:10What was that?
00:05:13I don't know what I was talking about.
00:05:31Hey, Dad.
00:05:32Hey.
00:05:34Thirsty?
00:05:35Yeah, I just got back from a run.
00:05:38You got to keep working harder.
00:05:40You lose your chances at a scholarship.
00:05:41I've already told you.
00:05:42I don't want to go straight to college.
00:05:43I want to join the army.
00:05:45I don't care what you want.
00:05:45You are not joining the army.
00:05:47You're getting a lacrosse scholarship.
00:05:48You're going to college.
00:05:49And there is no discussing it.
00:05:50I just want to serve my country.
00:05:51Like you did.
00:05:53Absolutely not.
00:05:54But, Dad, I just...
00:05:55No buts, Drew!
00:05:58This conversation is over.
00:06:00Don't ever, ever bring it up again.
00:06:07I can't believe people are actually calling you a hero.
00:06:10You didn't do anything special.
00:06:11You just saved a life.
00:06:14Yeah.
00:06:15Sure, he did.
00:06:16But not without putting his life and everyone else's in danger.
00:06:21I called you in to talk about the run.
00:06:24The woman that you saved, doing much better.
00:06:26She'll be getting out of the hospital sometime soon and maybe even going home.
00:06:30That's wonderful.
00:06:31I was wondering how she was doing.
00:06:33Yeah, she's good.
00:06:33And she's alive because of what you did.
00:06:37That being said, you broke every safety regulation in the book.
00:06:42Not only did you put your life on the line, you put every member of the battalion's life in jeopardy
00:06:48as well.
00:06:48Chief, again, I'm really sorry.
00:06:51I know, but now I'm between a rock and a hard place.
00:06:55I received a call from the mayor's office.
00:06:58He thinks you're a hero.
00:07:00He wants to give you an award.
00:07:02He wants to celebrate your actions.
00:07:04I think it's completely wrong, and I told him so.
00:07:09But he's insisting.
00:07:11I may not be able to suspend you like I think I should, but I can make your life a
00:07:16little less comfortable.
00:07:19Hamad!
00:07:20Hamad, come in here for a minute, please.
00:07:25Hello, sir.
00:07:26It's a pleasure to meet you.
00:07:28Welcome to the team.
00:07:29Hamad, is it?
00:07:30Yes, sir.
00:07:31I'm honored to be training with you.
00:07:32I promise I'm going to let you down.
00:07:35Chief, is he saying what I think he's saying?
00:07:37Indeed, lieutenant.
00:07:38From this point forward and until further notice, you will be Hamad's primary training officer.
00:07:44Chief, you have to be kidding me.
00:07:45I'm not asking at all, Brian.
00:07:47I'm telling you.
00:07:48And considering the situation you've got yourself in, I don't see where you have much room to argue about anything.
00:07:54Do you?
00:07:57No, sir.
00:08:01Hey, Proby.
00:08:05Meet me at the barrel room around 8 o'clock.
00:08:07We can get a couple drinks, get to know each other.
00:08:10I don't drink, lieutenant.
00:08:11Why not?
00:08:12I'm Muslim, sir.
00:08:13Well, you can get a soda or something.
00:08:15I'll clearly drink enough for the both of us.
00:08:17You know, get crunk.
00:08:25So, kid.
00:08:27Why do you want to be a firefighter?
00:08:29Well, I've wanted to be a firefighter my entire life, sir.
00:08:31But why?
00:08:32You went to college.
00:08:34You got a degree in science or something, right?
00:08:37Microbiology to be exact.
00:08:38What?
00:08:39I mean, what are you doing here?
00:08:40Shouldn't you be in med school or something?
00:08:42Yeah, that was my dad's plan.
00:08:44He and my mom came here from Palestine to give me and my siblings a better education, more opportunity, basically
00:08:49a better life.
00:08:50There's nothing wrong with that.
00:08:52Yeah, but his dream is not my dream.
00:08:55I know my parents love me, but all they've ever done is just push, push, just pushing me towards their
00:08:59dreams, their goals.
00:09:00Nobody ever asked about what I want to do or what college I do.
00:09:02I don't care what you want.
00:09:03You are not doing the Army.
00:09:04You're getting a lacrosse scholarship.
00:09:05You're going to college.
00:09:06And there is no discussing it.
00:09:07I just want to serve my country like you did.
00:09:11Absolutely not.
00:09:12Dad, I can get job training.
00:09:14And then I can go to school after I serve.
00:09:16I know what is best for you.
00:09:18But, Dad, I...
00:09:18Don't bust, Drew.
00:09:20Don't ever, ever bring it up again.
00:09:25Lieutenant.
00:09:27Lieutenant.
00:09:28Sir.
00:09:31Yeah, sorry, kid.
00:09:33Is everything all right, sir?
00:09:35Yeah, I'm fine.
00:09:37Look, your parents are just looking out for you.
00:09:39Maybe you should listen to them.
00:09:41What?
00:09:42Are you telling me I shouldn't be a firefighter?
00:09:44Is it something I did today?
00:09:45Why are you saying this?
00:09:46This is a tough career, kid.
00:09:47We put our lives at risk every single day.
00:09:50You have an education.
00:09:51Why don't you use it?
00:09:52Why don't you listen to your parents?
00:09:54It's not too late to get out of all this.
00:09:55Because that's not what I want.
00:09:56Why are you saying this?
00:09:57Because parents know what's best for their kids.
00:10:07I'm sorry, kid.
00:10:10I'm sure you're going to make a great firefighter.
00:10:13And I promise to keep you safe while you learn.
00:10:19I think I'm just going to head home.
00:10:20Wait, why?
00:10:21No, no, no, no, no.
00:10:25It's getting late.
00:10:26I'll see you on the next shift.
00:10:54I'll see you on the next shift.
00:10:57Sous-titrage Société Radio-Canada
00:11:28You didn't come home, Brian. You're sleeping in the same clothes you wore last night, and now I find you
00:11:33laying in bed, reeking of alcohol. Where were you? We will discuss it, just as soon as you sober up.
00:11:55Morning, Drew. Morning. You need to get your stick off the table before your mother sees.
00:12:01She doesn't care. Besides, it's Clay's anyway. Oh, speaking of Clay, have you seen his new ride? Check it out.
00:12:13He's gonna pick me up. We're gonna take it for a spin. When am I gonna get my car? I
00:12:17mean, I just turned 17.
00:12:18Not for a while. I didn't have my first car until I was out of the mili-
00:12:25So I was out of the military.
00:12:26Central dispatch to Shelby County Fire, Shelby County EMS. Respond to a single vehicle accident with injuries at 1543 Zering
00:12:34Mill Road.
00:12:35See, this is exactly what I'm talking about. Shelby County EMS.
00:12:50What's up, cook? Another day, you know.
00:12:56What's up, cook? Another day, you know.
00:13:13No, get out of the way. Come on, Clay. Come on, Clay. Come on, man. Get in here and help
00:13:22me. You have to save him. No, back up.
00:13:26Do your jobs. Come on. Come on.
00:13:33Come on. Somebody do something and help me. Come on.
00:13:37Come on. John. No.
00:13:46Come on.
00:14:26Hey, cook.
00:14:29It appears that you knew that kid.
00:14:31Am I correct?
00:14:33He was my son's best friend.
00:14:36You know where he lives.
00:14:39Still with his parents.
00:14:43You might have come with me to break the news to them.
00:14:46I think that'd be better to look my familiar face.
00:14:53Yeah. I'll go.
00:15:12Ma'am, sir, I'm sorry to inform you that your son was involved in a vehicle accident.
00:15:21Unfortunately, his injury was too severe. EMS was unable to save him.
00:15:27No, there's been a mistake. That's not my son. That's not Clay.
00:15:33Lieutenant Cook here with Chevy County Fire was able to identify him.
00:15:38I have an impression that they were both good friends.
00:15:43Brian? Brian, were you there? Did you try to help him? Why didn't you do anything? No! Brian, you killed
00:15:53him!
00:15:54You killed him!
00:16:27You guys told us what happened. I'm really sorry.
00:16:30Head high, man.
00:16:31It's like where you lost your brother.
00:16:33Sorry, man. Hang in there.
00:16:41Cheer up.
00:16:43You can't save them all.
00:16:47Hero.
00:16:55Get him!
00:16:56Break it up!
00:16:57Break it up!
00:16:58Break it up!
00:17:00Let him out!
00:17:01Get off me!
00:17:02You need him to save you!
00:17:04Chill, man.
00:17:04Huh?
00:17:05Chill, chill, chill, chill.
00:17:06No, no. Let me back in there.
00:17:08You know he was in the wrong.
00:17:09What's all the commotion?
00:17:12Cook, are you fighting?
00:17:14See, there's more to it than that.
00:17:15Am I talking to you?
00:17:17Cook, my office now.
00:17:38Chief, I just want to say-
00:17:39I don't want to hear it, Brian.
00:17:41You've been coming apart at the seams for some time now.
00:17:43Now it's getting even worse.
00:17:45Sir, I'm sorry.
00:17:47Brian, I'm putting you on paid administrative leave so you can get some help.
00:17:51Help for what?
00:17:51For whatever the hell is wrong with you.
00:17:53There's nothing bothering me, sir. I'm fine. I promise.
00:17:56Brian, people talk.
00:17:59And I've been told that not only are you still drinking, but it's getting even worse.
00:18:03You're having a lot of aggression towards your colleagues, and I can only imagine what's going on at home.
00:18:08And I can't have this.
00:18:09So I'm recommending you for therapy.
00:18:12What? You can't be serious.
00:18:13I don't need any therapy.
00:18:15I don't want to hear it, Brian.
00:18:16Brian, you are attending these classes whether you like it or not.
00:18:19Now our chaplain, Captain Shaw, runs these classes.
00:18:23So at least there'll be somebody there that you know.
00:18:26These classes? What are they even for?
00:18:28First responders.
00:18:29They address everything from PTSD to aggression, depression, mental disorders.
00:18:35Anything you got, they address it.
00:18:37But, Chief, I'm not mental.
00:18:38You will be going to these classes for the next six weeks if you want to return to work.
00:18:46Sir.
00:18:47At the end of the six weeks if Captain McGee signs off on you being 100%, you'll be fully reinstated.
00:18:53If not, you and I will be having a different conversation.
00:18:58Cook!
00:18:59Now!
00:18:59Yes, Chief.
00:19:23Hello?
00:19:25Hey, Mel.
00:19:27Where's Drew?
00:19:28I think he's at home.
00:19:30Why?
00:19:34Clay was in a car accident.
00:19:36Oh, no.
00:19:37Is he okay?
00:19:42Brian?
00:19:44Brian, is Clay okay?
00:19:47Brian?
00:19:55Maddie?
00:19:57Are you okay?
00:20:05Is Drew gonna be okay?
00:20:09Of course, honey.
00:20:13You just need some time.
00:20:16Your brother will be fine, I promise.
00:20:21Sweetheart, what is it?
00:20:25I loved him.
00:20:29Who, sweetheart?
00:20:32Clay?
00:20:35Oh, baby.
00:20:37You were in love with Clay.
00:20:40I'm sorry.
00:20:41I didn't know.
00:20:47I really need to tell you something.
00:20:51Brian, what is it?
00:20:56I've been put on paid leave.
00:21:00What?
00:21:01Because of the accident?
00:21:03Not exactly.
00:21:05Chief thinks I need to attend these classes for first responders before I can come back.
00:21:10What type of classes?
00:21:20These classes are at our church.
00:21:23Captain McGee, our station's chaplain.
00:21:27Brian, this is great.
00:21:30You haven't been yourself for some time now.
00:21:32You've been drinking more heavily like before.
00:21:36I'm worried about you.
00:21:38I don't need this.
00:21:39I'm not going.
00:21:41So what happens if you don't go?
00:21:43I guess I don't have a job.
00:21:45Then I guess you don't have a choice because you're not losing your job.
00:21:48Plus, I think this will be really good for you.
00:21:51When do you start?
00:21:54Today.
00:21:55Brian, that's great.
00:21:56I'm not going.
00:21:58Yes, you are.
00:22:01Have you checked on Drew this morning?
00:22:05No.
00:22:06Have you?
00:22:07I tried.
00:22:08But he doesn't want to talk.
00:22:10He's not going to school today and neither is Maddie.
00:22:14Will you check on them before you leave?
00:22:16Sure.
00:22:18Okay.
00:22:19I have to go.
00:22:28I love you.
00:22:30And hey, this is a good thing.
00:22:34We're all going to get through this together.
00:22:40If you need anything at all, your brother is right next door.
00:22:45I love you very much.
00:22:53Okay.
00:23:03Drew, buddy, are you in there?
00:23:12Drew, can I come in?
00:23:14Dad, go away.
00:23:15Leave me alone.
00:23:19I'm just worried about you, son.
00:23:22Are you okay?
00:23:25Okay.
00:23:26Drew.
00:23:28Drew!
00:23:29Go away!
00:23:38Okay, son.
00:23:42Hey, I gotta go.
00:23:45Take care of your sister and call me if you need me.
00:24:02Brian.
00:24:03Welcome.
00:24:05It's so good to have you here, Brian.
00:24:07Look, Captain.
00:24:08I don't really need to be here.
00:24:10The chief seems to think you do.
00:24:13So all I ask is you give it a chance.
00:24:15All right?
00:24:16You may be surprised by what you learned.
00:24:17So feel free to get something to drink or a snack.
00:24:20We're about ready to start.
00:24:21All right?
00:24:29Okay, everyone.
00:24:30Let's get started.
00:24:40It would just be easier if you could do it that way.
00:24:42Oh, well, that's my job.
00:24:43It would save everybody so much time.
00:24:45So it would be easier for you.
00:24:46Okay.
00:24:46That's all that matters, right?
00:24:47All right.
00:24:48Hey, I'm the one who's gotta listen to it.
00:24:50You're out there running around doing calls and I'm sitting there listening to it.
00:24:52Oh, it's so good to be back.
00:24:55Welcome, everyone.
00:24:56Who's this guy?
00:24:58Now, Dallas.
00:25:00You know we don't do that.
00:25:01But since you asked, this is Brian.
00:25:04Everyone say hello to Brian.
00:25:06Hi, Brian.
00:25:08Brian, since this is your first meeting with us, I'm gonna explain some of the ground rules.
00:25:12We only use first names here.
00:25:14So, Brian, let me introduce you to everyone, okay?
00:25:18This is Ben.
00:25:19Like you, Ben is a firefighter.
00:25:22Hey, brother.
00:25:23I'm with the department outside of Louisville.
00:25:26And this is Rick.
00:25:27Rick is a police officer.
00:25:29Come on, man.
00:25:29No, I'm a detective.
00:25:31All right?
00:25:32And Brian, we worked a few scenes back when I was on the beat here in Shelbyville.
00:25:37So, it's good to see you, man.
00:25:40And to your right is Renee.
00:25:42Renee is a dispatch operator.
00:25:45Hi, Brian.
00:25:46Welcome.
00:25:47And this inquisitive gentleman to your left is Dallas.
00:25:52Dallas is a former U.S. Army medic.
00:25:55So, Brian, this is your first meeting with us.
00:25:57Would you like to tell your story and why you're here?
00:26:01Not really.
00:26:02I mean, I don't even need to be here.
00:26:06We all say that the first time, brother.
00:26:08Right?
00:26:09Now, listen.
00:26:10This is Brian's first meeting, so naturally he may be a little hesitant to speak.
00:26:15Maybe somebody else would like to tell us their story and why they're here.
00:26:20I will.
00:26:20Of course you will.
00:26:22Stop.
00:26:23Dallas, thank you.
00:26:24Go ahead.
00:26:25Hi, I'm Dallas.
00:26:27I was an Army medic for five years.
00:26:30And I served two tours of duty over in Afghanistan.
00:26:33Saw some really horrible things over there during my deployment.
00:26:35I started having anxiety attacks and night terrors and stuff like that.
00:26:42The Army diagnosed me with PTSD and I just, they sent me home.
00:26:47Well, hold on.
00:26:48I thought this meeting was for first responders only.
00:26:51What is he even doing here?
00:26:52Thank you.
00:26:53Now, Brian, that is, that is a good question.
00:26:56However, we don't interrupt when others are speaking, okay?
00:27:00But since you asked, Dallas has tried working as an EMT with other ambulance services.
00:27:06Unfortunately, he's just not able to, you know, stay with them very long.
00:27:10Right.
00:27:12I'd go on a call and over and over again it just kept happening.
00:27:16And I'd just flash back to Afghanistan.
00:27:20I still have a lot of bad dreams and anxiety, but this group, this group's helped me a lot.
00:27:31Well, mostly.
00:27:33Dallas, thank you.
00:27:35Who'd like to go next?
00:27:37Um, I'll go.
00:27:38Thank you, Renee.
00:27:42Hi, I'm Renee.
00:27:43As you know, I'm a dispatch operator.
00:27:47And I know what you're thinking.
00:27:49Why is she here?
00:27:53You're thinking, sure, her job is stressful, but does she really need a support group?
00:28:01One, two years ago, I received a call from a nine-year-old little girl, who said her daddy was
00:28:11hurting her mommy really bad.
00:29:17Daddy killed Mommy
00:29:20Over and over again
00:29:24Then she started saying
00:29:26Stop, stop
00:29:30I told her to run
00:29:35Run outside somewhere
00:29:37Get help
00:29:37A neighbor or something
00:29:43But she couldn't hear me
00:29:47I was desperately trying to get somebody there to help her
00:29:53And then the phone went silent again
00:29:58And then a loud bang
00:30:04I stayed on the line
00:30:06Until I could hear one officer that arrived on scene
00:30:13He had beaten his daughter
00:30:14And her mother
00:30:15To death
00:30:16With a leg of a chair from their kitchen table
00:30:22And then he turned a gun on himself
00:30:26All while I sat there on the phone
00:30:31That was the call
00:30:32That shook me to my core
00:30:35I was on mental health leave for months
00:30:41And that's when I found this group
00:30:46So yeah, that was about two years ago
00:30:50But
00:30:51Six months ago
00:30:52I was able to return to work full time
00:30:56This group
00:30:58It's really helped
00:31:01It's helped
00:31:02For me to learn to cope
00:31:06Thank you, Renee
00:31:08Thank you for sharing your story
00:31:11Who'd like to go next?
00:31:14I'll go
00:31:15Okay, Rick
00:31:16Thank you
00:31:20Brian, you and I
00:31:21We go back a few years
00:31:26Obviously as a police officer
00:31:28I see some pretty bad things
00:31:31Often the scum of society
00:31:33Until the day came
00:31:34I was
00:31:35Forced to use my weapon
00:31:38We had just completed
00:31:39A big bust of a meth house
00:31:41On the north end of town
00:31:43And completed our arrest
00:31:45Running the canines
00:31:46And I was doing the final sweep
00:31:51When
00:31:52Someone rushed out of a hidden plank door
00:31:54In
00:31:55One of the closets
00:31:58They were holding an AR-15
00:32:01I drew down on him
00:32:03Demanded he drop his weapon
00:32:06It was in the shadows of the hallway
00:32:07And I
00:32:08Could only make out a silhouette
00:32:13Kept on yelling at him
00:32:14Drop your weapon
00:32:14Drop your weapon
00:32:17And he
00:32:18Didn't
00:32:20Then he appeared to raise it
00:32:22And I fired on him
00:32:26I realized
00:32:27It was a kid
00:32:33It was a 15 year old kid
00:32:38He died before the ambulance
00:32:40Could get there
00:32:47I remember that
00:32:49I didn't realize that was you
00:32:52Yeah
00:32:54Well obviously I was put on
00:32:56Administrative leave
00:32:56While they investigated it
00:33:01They found the shooting to be justified
00:33:03But I
00:33:05Didn't accept it
00:33:11So I had nightmares
00:33:12And struggled to pull my weapon
00:33:16Continuously failed at the range
00:33:19And I was again put on administrative leave
00:33:23But a colleague
00:33:26Suggested this group
00:33:30So I'm back on patrol now
00:33:34And I still struggle
00:33:35With the rigors of the job
00:33:37So I come here
00:33:42And it helps
00:33:45And the captain says
00:33:47And the captain says I have to
00:33:48So
00:33:51Rick thank you
00:33:55Well Ben
00:33:55Your turn
00:33:56Do you mind sharing with the group?
00:33:59Absolutely
00:33:59Thank you
00:34:04Brother
00:34:05I don't have to tell you how tough this job can be
00:34:08We see horrible things every day
00:34:11Some are worse than others
00:34:13We've seen burn victims
00:34:16Terrible accidents
00:34:17You name it
00:34:18We've seen it
00:34:20Sometimes
00:34:20No matter what we do
00:34:22No matter how hard we try
00:34:24We just can't save them
00:34:29We live with these images
00:34:30Every day of our lives
00:34:32And uh
00:34:34I've always been able to avoid internalizing it
00:34:37You know
00:34:38I've been able to wake up
00:34:40Go to work
00:34:40Do my job
00:34:41And go home and sleep soundly
00:34:44Until one run
00:34:46One run changed all of it
00:34:49I'll never forget it either
00:34:52What's crazy
00:34:54It should have been the least disturbing auto accident
00:34:57I ever worked
00:34:58Or so I thought
00:34:59It was a two vehicle accident
00:35:01And it was a small truck and a sedan
00:35:05And
00:35:06The truck
00:35:07T-boned the car when it came across the bridge
00:35:11When we got there
00:35:12There was hardly any damage to either vehicle
00:35:16The driver of the car pulled out in front of the truck
00:35:19And
00:35:20It had been raining out
00:35:22He couldn't stop
00:35:23He couldn't swerve
00:35:24There was nothing he could do
00:35:28The driver of the truck
00:35:30Walked away
00:35:32No injuries
00:35:34But the driver of the car was a teenager
00:35:36And he was uh
00:35:38He was dead on impact
00:35:42This kid
00:35:44Had virtually no visible injuries
00:35:47Just a few small scratches
00:35:48But he had massive internal injuries
00:35:51And that night
00:35:52I woke up from a deep sleep
00:35:54And I was hyperventilating
00:35:55And I couldn't catch my breath
00:35:57I just kept seeing this kid's face
00:35:59In my head
00:36:00Over and over and over again
00:36:02Like I couldn't make sense of it
00:36:04I couldn't figure it out
00:36:05The only thing I could come up with
00:36:07Is that that kid
00:36:09Was the same age as my own son
00:36:14Suddenly
00:36:15Every run that I went on
00:36:17Haunted me
00:36:18Day in and day out
00:36:19I didn't tell a soul
00:36:21No
00:36:21I couldn't even tell anybody
00:36:22At my own department
00:36:25But my wife
00:36:26She was concerned
00:36:27She started looking for ways
00:36:28For me to get help
00:36:30She's the one that found
00:36:31Help for first responders
00:36:33And uh
00:36:34She encouraged me to attend
00:36:36In this group
00:36:38They've taught me how to learn
00:36:39How to manage my anxiety
00:36:40And fear
00:36:41More importantly
00:36:43They've shown me
00:36:44That I'm not alone
00:36:46And uh
00:36:47We all have similar situations
00:36:48So uh
00:36:50I'm glad you're here brother
00:36:57And
00:36:58Thank you for sharing your story
00:37:00Thank you
00:37:01Thank you all
00:37:02For sharing your stories
00:37:05So Brian
00:37:07After hearing all that
00:37:08Would you like to

00:50:02Do you know if he's participating?
00:50:04I mean, is he trying
00:50:05to get something out of these sessions?
00:50:08It's not really my place
00:50:09to be a part of those meetings,
00:50:11but Captain McGee
00:50:12has made it sound like
00:50:15Brian's a bit reluctant
00:50:16to participate.
00:50:20Um...
00:50:20I'm worried about him.
00:50:22He's really struggling emotionally
00:50:24and he really needs help.
00:50:27Well, again,
00:50:29it's not my place
00:50:30to be a part of those meetings, but...
00:50:34I will stop by and say hello.
00:50:37Thank you, Reverend.
00:50:39I appreciate it.
00:50:40Oh, think nothing of it.
00:51:08I'm gonna be marrying a young couple.
00:51:10I'm excited.
00:51:11It's one of my first weddings I've ever done.
00:51:12They let you do that?
00:51:13Listen, man, my life has changed through this group.
00:51:16Yes, it definitely has.
00:51:17I went to this magic show
00:51:19and I was really impressed.
00:51:21So I think I'm gonna become a magician.
00:51:24Wow.
00:51:24Hold it, hold it.
00:51:25Is it real magic?
00:51:26It's real magic.
00:51:27No way.
00:51:28Abramadabra.
00:51:29Wow.
00:51:30I mean, it wasn't bad.
00:51:31It just felt like...
00:51:32I'm helpless.
00:51:33I'm just on the phone,
00:51:34waiting and waiting for someone to get there
00:51:36and all I can do is just keep them calm.
00:51:38Yeah.
00:51:39I am.
00:51:39But, you know, we do what we can do
00:51:41and it's getting better.
00:51:42Just another day.
00:51:44Another day.
00:51:44Same old, same old.
00:51:46What's that even matter?
00:51:47I mean...
00:51:47Come on, man.
00:51:48Don't be late.
00:51:49I'm getting by.
00:51:50It's just...
00:51:51Nothing's changing.
00:51:52The world's gonna be how it is.
00:51:54You know?
00:51:54You just gotta exist in it and that's fine.
00:51:57I really enjoyed the interaction.
00:51:59Loved it.
00:51:59Thank you, man.
00:52:00Now, before you leave,
00:52:01don't forget the refreshments, alright?
00:52:03Yes.
00:52:03See you next week.
00:52:04Alright, let's get it.
00:52:05Yeah, come on.
00:52:06No, we can leave.
00:52:12Brian.
00:52:13Can we chat a minute?
00:52:16Brian, you are not participating.
00:52:18I really gotta go, Cap.
00:52:19No, I haven't seen you share one time.
00:52:22I can't release you back to duty
00:52:24if I don't see you trending in a positive direction.
00:52:26Maybe next time, but seriously, Captain, I gotta go.
00:52:29I'm sorry.
00:52:41Hey, guys.
00:52:42Hey.
00:52:42What are you doing here?
00:52:44What's going on, man?
00:52:45Trying to catch you as you come out, you know?
00:52:47How's it going, Lieutenant?
00:52:48Good, kid.
00:52:49How's training going?
00:52:50Good.
00:52:51Other than Yates and Cutler, you know, hazing him.
00:52:54Nah, Yates isn't that bad.
00:52:55Seriously, what's the deal with Cutler?
00:52:56Who?
00:52:57Tiny hook?
00:52:58Oh, and never let him hook up a hose line.
00:53:01Shapes confusing.
00:53:04Anyway, speaking of Yates, he's cooking tonight.
00:53:07Yikes.
00:53:07Yeah.
00:53:08So we were thinking of getting something to eat
00:53:09at the taco truck around the corner.
00:53:12Want to come with us?
00:53:13Uh, no.
00:53:14I really gotta get home.
00:53:15Uh, rain check?
00:53:16No problem.
00:53:17Yeah, nice.
00:53:19Guys, this was great.
00:53:20I needed to pick me up.
00:53:21Can we do it again?
00:53:23Yeah, of course.
00:53:23Just, you know, answer your phone.
00:53:27Bye, Lieutenant.
00:53:31Yeah, man, it was good to see you guys today, too.
00:53:34But listen, I just got home.
00:53:36I'm about to grab a snack, see where everybody's at.
00:53:38Give me a call tomorrow.
00:53:39I will if you pick up.
00:53:40I picked up just now, didn't I?
00:53:43Finally.
00:53:43All right, man.
00:53:44Good night.
00:53:55Hey, guys, I'm home.
00:54:03Hello?
00:54:16Brian, I know things have been difficult for you lately.
00:54:20But your problems are taking a toll on this family.
00:54:23I've tried talking to you, but you refuse to hear me.
00:54:27I think we all need a break.
00:54:30So the kids and I are going to stay at Christie's house for a few days.
00:54:33Unless there's an emergency, please don't call or come by.
00:54:37Let's just have a few days to breathe and clear our heads.
00:54:41I'm praying for you.
00:54:43All my love.
00:54:44Melanie.
00:54:45Maybe we are going to stay at you.
00:54:51I think the details about it's not the end.
00:54:58I'm praying for you.
00:54:59I'm praying for you.
00:55:01I'm praying for you.
00:55:09I can't be praying for you.
00:55:09I'm praying for you, but I'm praying for away.
00:55:14It's all for you today, but I'm praying for you.
01:02:52attempting to commit suicide in my own home with my kids upstairs.
01:03:06While I was in the hospital, the minister from this church visited me a lot.
01:03:13Over several months, we became close and he stuck by me.
01:03:21And he shared with me a scripture from the book of Philippians chapter 3
01:03:26where the apostle Paul says that he considered nothing more important than the call.
01:03:34That everything else was rubbish.
01:03:38And he said that what I had gone through
01:03:44had given me an insight
01:03:48that few people have as to how important the call is.
01:03:53And that we're to continue
01:03:56forward
01:03:57no matter what.
01:04:01Not just walking in the confidence that we're called
01:04:04but walking in self-forgiveness
01:04:06because that's what the world needs.
01:04:09I always keep this pager
01:04:11close by me
01:04:13sits on my desk
01:04:15to remind me
01:04:18that there was a reason
01:04:19that God's about forgiveness.
01:04:23See, I had a new call.
01:04:27I took over this church from that kind old man
01:04:31and
01:04:32heard his old flock.
01:04:35My focus since then
01:04:37has been to answer that call
01:04:39to keep my pager turned on
01:04:42and to make sure
01:04:43that I continue to reach out
01:04:47and hold out my hand
01:04:48to the people in this community
01:04:50before they step into eternity.
01:04:56Wow.
01:04:58Reverend, thank you so much
01:04:59for sharing your story.
01:05:02If I may ask,
01:05:03how are things today?
01:05:05Wonderful.
01:05:06These are the best times of my life.
01:05:09When people ask me
01:05:10how's your day going
01:05:11or
01:05:13how's your life going
01:05:15I just tell them
01:05:17it is well.
01:05:35I think I'd like to share.
01:05:40Yes, Brian, please.
01:05:41We'd love for you to share.
01:05:43So, the floor is yours.
01:05:46Yes, Brian.
01:05:59The crying is the easy part these days.
01:06:04It's the actual sharing
01:06:06that's the struggle.
01:06:12As you know,
01:06:13I'm Brian.
01:06:18I am a father.
01:06:21A husband.
01:06:24A firefighter.
01:06:28And an alcoholic.
01:06:33I strongly believe
01:06:35that I also suffer from
01:06:37severe anxiety,
01:06:40PTSD,
01:06:41and
01:06:42God only knows what else.
01:06:49Being a firefighter is so tough.
01:06:52It's the hardest job
01:06:54but over the last several weeks
01:06:58I've started to realize
01:06:59that fighting the fire
01:07:00in the field
01:07:01is nothing,
01:07:03nothing compared
01:07:04to fighting the fire
01:07:06that is just raging inside.
01:07:18So, I guess
01:07:22I'm here to try
01:07:23and figure out
01:07:24how to
01:07:27put out the other fire.
01:07:37Brian,
01:07:38thank you for sharing
01:07:40your story.
01:08:08Mel,
01:08:10it's for you.
01:08:30I think I'm ready
01:08:31to get some help.

01:09:08to recognize

01:09:37for saving the life

01:09:41with no chance of escape.
01:09:44At this time

01:10:01Thank you.
01:10:04Thank you.
01:10:17Thank you.
01:10:23I want you to know
01:10:25Je sais que vous avez fait tous les protocoles, mais je suis prouvé de vous, et pas pour juste ça.
01:10:32Merci, sir.
01:10:47Merci encore, M. Mayor.
01:10:49CONGRATULATIONS.
01:10:49Thank you.
01:10:50Thank you.
01:10:50Thank you, Chief.
01:10:52Thank you.
01:10:53Il y a quelqu'un qui veut vous dire.
01:10:56I am so proud of you.
01:11:02Congratulations, Brian.
01:11:04Well-deserved.
01:11:05Well-deserved.
01:11:06Thank you, Reverend.
01:11:07So I hear you're going back to work on the department next week?
01:11:10Yeah, we're finalizing the red tape right now.
01:11:12I gotta tell you, I am really excited to get back in the field.
01:11:16So, what now?
01:11:18Well, right now, we're gonna go celebrate and have dinner with my family.
01:11:22What I meant, Brian, is what now for you?
01:11:27I don't know.
01:11:29I need to get my career back on track.
01:11:32I need to make amends with my family.
01:11:35I know I need to keep attending that group so that I have the support that I need.
01:11:40And who knows?
01:11:42Maybe you'll even see me in church from time to time.
01:11:46I'd like that.
01:11:49Honestly, Reverend, I'm just trying to take it one day at a time.
01:11:57Brian, that's all any of us can do.
01:12:05It's been a year, and honestly, I don't know how I got here.
01:12:10Things are much better at work.
01:12:11Everyone enjoys one another's company, and we try to have fun in our downtime.
01:12:15We play video games, take the trucks out to eat, and we even play some basketball.
01:12:21Honestly, I'm even starting to like Yates.
01:12:24Well, sort of.
01:12:27I enjoyed training so much, I volunteered to oversee training our junior firefighters.
01:12:32It's rewarding to work with young people who want to pursue a career of helping others.
01:12:37And speaking of training young people, Ollie is getting along great.
01:12:40The guys of the department really seem to like him, and enjoy giving him a hard time.
01:12:45In fact, he's doing so well, I ask him to join me in training the juniors.
01:12:50I still attend the support group.
01:12:52I am much more open today and find that the others in the group, whether old or new, really help
01:12:57one another cope with the horrors of what we see every day.
01:13:00Talking through it all definitely helps.
01:13:02Thanks for coming, Dad.
01:13:04It means a lot.
01:13:04Things are great with the family.
01:13:06We do things together as often as we can.
01:13:09Drew's a senior now.
01:13:11So I'm trying to spend as much time with him as I can, especially before he leaves for basic training
01:13:16this summer.
01:13:17Yeah, we compromised.
01:13:19He's still going to college in the fall, but he'll do so as a member of the Army National Guard.
01:13:24He gets to follow his dream of serving our country while also getting his education.
01:13:30Mally and I have reconnected in so many ways.
01:13:33We make quality time for one another, even if it's just cooking a meal or watching a movie.
01:13:40Now, here I am, standing among friends and family celebrating my little girl's sweet 16 party.
01:13:4716?
01:13:48Where have the years gone?
01:13:50Time just flies by and I feel like I've spent so many years so wrapped up in my career and
01:13:56dealing with my own personal demons that I missed out on so much.
01:14:00I missed out on all the things around me that are so much more important than what I made priorities
01:14:05in the past.
01:14:06This past year has been a rollercoaster of emotions, but I wouldn't change a minute of it.
01:14:16Well, maybe a couple.
01:14:18I am stronger for it all and so is my family.
01:14:21I have a new appreciation for life and the people I share it with.
01:14:25They appreciate things more.
01:14:27I love more.
01:14:28I better manage my fears and anxiety and I don't self-medicate anymore.
01:14:33I have learned to accept loss.
01:14:35Yeah, I worked hard to get to where I am today.
01:14:39When people congratulate me for what I have overcome, I am humbled.
01:14:44Honestly, I don't know how to respond.
01:14:46But when they ask me how life is today, I simply tell them,
01:14:51it is well.
