00:02Los Angeles has become extremely fascist,
00:05especially because Karen Bass appointed Jim McDonald as the chief of police.
00:10I wanted to know, especially for the immigrant community that's watching,
00:13what is your plan to de-fascistize this city?
00:17I think there's a lot that we can do to make sure our LAPD is actually protecting people
00:23instead of protecting ICE on our streets.
00:26As we saw happen, I think that starts with a culture ship from the very top
00:30and new leadership in the department.
00:33I don't believe that Chief McDonald has met this moment,
00:37and I will make sure that we are appointing a police chief
00:40who can really respond to the needs that immigrant Angelenos have
00:44and that every resident of Los Angeles has.
00:47But also, we can do better at responding to protests.
00:51People are exercising their First Amendment rights
00:54to protest this federal government.
00:57And LAPD, under this police chief and under this mayor,
01:01has tear-gassed protesters,
01:03something that they weren't even doing in 2020.
01:05And that needs to end.
01:07We need to be able to make sure that we can keep neighborhoods safe
01:10while still ensuring that people have
01:13their First Amendment rights to protest secure.
01:15Here in this city, that is possible to do,
01:17and I will do that as your mayor.
