A tanker caught fire in the Black Sea near Sochi on October 6, sending a massive column of dark smoke into the sky. Authorities temporarily closed beaches in the Sirius area and began monitoring air and water quality.
Reports have identified the vessel as the oil tanker Aframax Rio, but this has not been independently confirmed by Russian authorities. Claims that the fire followed a drone or naval-drone attack also remain unverified.
