Jeffrey Sachs has delivered a stark warning about U.S. and Israeli policy in the Middle East, describing it as a reckless “war of choice” driven by competing ambitions for global and regional dominance. Sachs argues that decades of military interventions, regime-change efforts, and conflicts across the Middle East and Africa have created a dangerous cycle of destabilization. He has also sharply criticized recent escalations involving Iran, warning that miscalculations could push the region toward a much larger confrontation. Sachs further argues that the crisis is weakening international institutions and raising fears that continued escalation could have consequences far beyond the Middle East—including the risk of a wider global war.

00:00And everything I've said about Trump, I would say is true about Netanyahu, although perhaps not with the dementia, but
00:09everything else I think is true.
00:11He's a malignant narcissist.
00:13He is a fascist, in my view, and he's a very dangerous person, one of the most dangerous in the
00:21world.
00:21So I don't think they want to stop until they have some result other than just stopping.
00:31I don't know what Donald Trump really wants to do.
00:34I know what Netanyahu wants to do, which is to have World War III if necessary.
00:40Because Netanyahu, as he said, he's been dreaming 40 years of this war.
00:45He's not going to let this one go quickly.
00:49And quickly, he's finally got the U.S. doing what he wants, which is a full-scale commitment of the
00:57U.S. military.
00:58And he's about to have a land invasion by the U.S. military in the next few days as the
01:04thousands of Marines come.
01:07So Netanyahu wants the war to continue.
01:10So to my mind, it depends on the military reality more than anything.
01:19Because the war will continue militarily.
01:23Even if the U.S. and Israel were to stop, Iran wouldn't stop.
01:27And the U.S. and Israel aren't going to stop, actually.
01:31And then the question is, who's right in this military analysis?
01:35Are there more missiles than missile defense?
01:40Or are there enough U.S. bombers that they can blow Iran to smithereens?
01:50Usually, the answer is the first one, actually.
01:55Because countries can take a lot of bombing for some reason.
01:59It's counterintuitive.
02:01But the history of aerial bombing is that it rarely leads to surrender.
02:07And it rarely leads, and even Serbia, which is a tiny little country without military, basically.
02:15It took 78 days of bombing to get Serbia to basically surrender.
02:2478 days.
02:26By 78 days, if we go 78 days, there's no more oil coming out of the Middle East for years
02:32and years to come, would be my guess.
02:34And probably a lot of Jerusalem would be blown up by then.
02:39And it'd be pretty damn bad 78 days.
02:44But we're on that path right now.
02:46We're really on that path right now.
02:49Because it's hard to see stopping.
02:52And Donald Trump, if I'm right about the psychology, he's not going to stop.
03:00But the Security Council meeting that I attended four weeks ago, this was at the very start of the U
03:14.S. war of aggression, U.S.-Israel war of aggression,
03:19was completely surrealistic because that day the U.S. and Israel attacked Pearl Harbor style, attacked Iran as the negotiations
03:36were supposed to take place the next day in Vienna.
03:41So they made their surprise attack, they killed the 40 leaders, and there was a Security Council meeting that afternoon
03:48at 3 p.m.
03:51And I got called that morning by some of the governments and said, we'd like you to testify, Mr. Sachs.
03:58And I said I would be pleased to do so.
04:01And I prepared testimony.
04:03And then when I arrived at the Security Council, I was told, well, the U.K., which chairs that month
04:13as president of the Security Council, has ruled out your testimony, so you won't be able to testify.
04:20I thought that's nice.
04:21Let's have a good grown-up discussion.
04:24But they didn't want that.
04:27Okay, so the Security Council meeting started, and the first ambassador that spoke was from Bahrain, which has a two
04:37-year seat.
04:38And the Bahraini ambassador said, I'm here.
04:43This was, by the way, a Security Council session called by Iran.
04:46They had just been attacked by the United States.
04:50And there was no conceivable justification under the U.N. Charter, which says that, under Article 2, Paragraph 4, that
05:00no state may use force or threaten the use of force against the territorial sovereignty or political sovereignty of another
05:08state.
05:08It's very clear.
05:10It's the essential purpose of the United Nations.
05:15So, Iran called this session, this emergency session, and Bahrain started.
05:21And Bahrain's first words were, we are here to condemn the unprovoked attack on us by Iran.
05:31Well, it's true that Iran was bombed, and then Iran launched missiles against the U.S. naval base in Bahrain.
05:43You would think a grown-up might say, well, it wasn't exactly unprovoked.
05:49There was a reason that today Iran struck us.
05:54So, you could say, we are here to protest that Iran has bombed us, but we understand that Iran was
06:00attacked this morning.
06:01No, not one word, not one sentence, that Iran was attacked by the United States and Israel.
06:13Not a sentence.
06:15I thought, this is really unpleasant.
06:21Not a complete surprise, but unpleasant.
06:24Then the next speaker was the French ambassador.
06:28The French ambassador said, we are here to condemn the attacks by Iran on the Gulf countries, which we stand
06:38by.
06:39Didn't mention that Israel and the United States had attacked Iran.
06:45Not even a sentence.
06:48Ladies and gentlemen, this went on for eight countries.
06:55It was Latvia, Greece, Denmark, I don't even remember, Britain, of course, the United States.
07:08It's surrealistic.
07:11You can't even believe this.
07:13How are we not going to blow up the world if you can't say the day of a massive attack
07:22that there's a problem here coming from the massive attack?
07:28Not even mention it.
07:30That's the state of affairs that we're in.
