Jayden Daniels in the new offense, a kicker competition, and rookies learning Washington's scheme. Plenty is going on this week in Ashburn.
Transcript
00:00My top storyline for this camp, for this early period of the offseason is,
00:07Jaden, how are you feeling in the new offense?
00:10There you go.
00:11That's all.
00:12I don't think anything else is important.
00:14I understand that someone will ask IU questions, and that probably should be asked,
00:18but it's just not important, to be honest with you.
00:22Right now, who you have with you and how things are working,
00:26that's more important than anything else.
00:29Agreed.
00:30Can I ask Jeff a question?
00:32Because what happens, we live in a very ageist society where people that are younger,
00:38and it feels like it's this generation particularly, kind of judges older people,
00:43but maybe that's always happened over the course of time,
00:45and we're just experiencing it ourselves.
00:48But I want to ask Jeff this question, because, Jeff, you are 30 years old, correct?
00:5332.
00:5432.
00:54All right, so you're older.
00:56Brandon Iyuk, I believe, is 28.
01:00Brandon Iyuk, I'm not even talking about the crazy, the messages aimed at the 49ers.
01:10I'm talking about this dancing video he just posted.
01:13In a row?
01:16Listen, I would never post a video like that of myself dancing, would you?
01:20No.
01:21Jeff, help me understand mentally, you're 32, he's 28.
01:26Like, you're our best shot at understanding this.
01:30Man, I don't know if he's trolling, but what would be funny, JP, is if he hit that dance
01:36in the end zone, no matter where he go.
01:38You know, even if he don't end up at Watch Day.
01:40If he hit that dance.
01:41If he can't come into an end zone near you, I would die laughing, because the dance was
01:45funny.
01:46I think we're looking into it a little too hard.
01:49I think there's a willingness to, like, dance, particularly dance, on, like, TikTok and
01:56Instagram as these things become trending and viral.
01:59I think there's more of a willingness for people that are younger than myself.
02:02Like, I just have that first job mentality, Jay.
02:07Show me a, give me a video running the damn route.
02:11Give me a video looking in tip-top shape.
02:13That will move me.
02:15I don't care that you're dancing if you're a football player.
02:19You know what I mean?
02:20It doesn't move me one way or the other.
02:22This is the off-season.
02:24People are getting ready for seasons.
02:26I haven't seen anything shown on Instagram, Twitter, whatever he's doing, that has shown
02:33me he's getting ready for a season.
02:35You get what I'm saying?
02:37That's a problem to me.
02:38And I understand that we only care about entertainment these days.
02:43I care about substance.
02:44I care about using things properly and getting ready to go do your job.
02:49And nothing I've seen shows me none of that.
02:56Remember, he put the location for his post in D.C. the other day?
03:01I guess last night, maybe, he posted one that said he was in Virginia.
03:07Again, I reiterate, maybe he's here.
03:09You want me to post another one?
03:10I could be in Cape Verde today.
03:12Did anybody respond to you about putting that post up and being in Bolivia?
03:16Way to go, man.
03:17Keep doing it.
03:19I was in Santa Cruz, Bolivia when I posted that.
03:25The storylines that are interesting, non-IUK division, I think Jaden's master, there's
03:33the dance if you're watching on Monumental.
03:34I just like, I think for younger people, posting a video of yourself dancing is quite normal.
03:41Listen, if I'm at an event, if I'm at a wedding or some sort of gala, once the drinks start
03:47flowing, I'll get up there and dance and make a fool of myself.
03:50You've seen me do it.
03:51Oh, man, yeah.
03:52But like, I'm not stone sober in my bathroom posting a dance video.
03:57That might just be generational.
03:58He just might be a bit of a goofball.
04:00Who knows?
04:01That could be it.
04:02He could be 100% that.
04:03I have posted dancing videos before.
04:05Of course you have.
04:06As I stated before, if you're out of a job and you're trying to get one, I don't care
04:12about none of the stuff he's posted.
04:13I care about, show me or show other teams out there, you're ready to go.
04:19To be honest, he probably made a bag off these last three videos because we are all clicking
04:23on it.
04:24I mean...
04:25This might be a two Americas thing.
04:26He probably made a bag.
04:27He ain't making a bag he can make on that damn football field.
04:30Stallion, you are 28, I think, right?
04:32Have you ever posted a video of yourself dancing?
04:35I have not posted a video of myself dancing.
04:37What about White Brian?
04:38If White Brian says, yes, I need this video immediately.
04:41Yeah.
04:42Dub B, have you ever posted a video of yourself dancing?
04:45No.
04:46I can't dance.
04:47Hold on.
04:47Y'all don't do the TikTok dances?
04:49No.
04:50No.
04:51I think it's fine if people do.
04:53I'm not knocking it.
04:54It's just...
04:54My daughter's trying to get me to do it all the time.
04:56I'm like, hell no.
04:56It's just not for me.
04:58I'm like, no, no, no.
04:59Come on, Daddy, you're going to be boring.
05:02I guarantee when you come and ask me, can I get it?
05:05Can I get 200 bucks?
05:05Can I get 300 bucks?
05:06Now, give it to you.
05:07You're going to be happy, aren't you?
05:08That's what I'm going to do.
05:09I think we need to have a day of posting our dances for the B-Mitch and Finley show.
05:14Well, you can go.
05:15I'm never going to do that for you.
05:16I'm busy.
05:17I have to wash my hair.
05:19You got to wash your hair.
05:20Yeah.
05:21I think the top storyline...
05:24Listen, it's new systems on offense and defense.
05:27So that's obviously a big deal.
05:28That's what we need to discuss with these players, right?
05:31The top of the list, though, is Jaden Daniels running a new offense.
05:34Jaden Daniels getting under center probably for the first time significantly since middle school or something.
05:40You know what I mean?
05:42Number two, I think, offensively, is who will emerge as the weapon opposite Terry McLaurin?
05:49Yeah.
05:49And that tends to slip into Brandon Ayoub's discussion.
05:52I don't want that to be the case.
05:54I want it to be who's here that can do it.
05:57Like, when people do it automatically and they start thinking about that, you're forgetting about a position that is one
06:03of the sexy positions in the league.
06:05Tight end.
06:06It could be Chig.
06:08You know, it could be a tight end who steps up and becomes that number two guy.
06:12If a tight end goes and gets 800, 900 yards receiving this year, would we be pissed off?
06:17Right.
06:18I mean, I think if a tight end goes anything over 700 yards this year, this is a good year.
06:26Totally.
06:27So, I think people get lazy.
06:30See, all of this TikTok entertainment stuff and all that posting, fans get lazy in their thought process.
06:39Because you feel it has to be the tight end.
06:42Hell, it could be Rashawn White getting 500, 600 out the backfield.
06:47Chig could come in and get you another 7-8.
06:49It's about the team winning.
06:50Not a particular person or particular position.
06:53It's whoever steps up and make it happen.
06:55So, I'm not a lazy thinker.
06:58I believe that they went out and got some guys and Chig has shown the tendency to be able to,
07:04y'all have to catch.
07:05Have to break a big one.
07:07Why couldn't he be?
07:08Right.
07:09Because he's not going against the top cornerback.
07:11He's going against linebackers and safeties.
07:14And if he can go out there and do the use of the athleticism he's had, he can kick their
07:18ass on a regular basis and become that guy for you.
07:21Agreed.
07:22I also think Traylon Burks can really play.
07:24Now, he's got to stay healthy.
07:25And that's something he's never done in his career.
07:27Stay healthy.
07:28And, you know, he hasn't had those years.
07:31So, he has to produce that first.
07:34Right.
07:35And stay healthy.
07:35So, my thing is, Chig is the guy who you just went out and got because you felt he gives
07:41you that capability.
07:43Rashad White is the guy you brought in because you feel he gives you that.
07:47I'd rather go with those guys who have been doing it.
07:48They're the guy who I've been hoping.
07:50They've been hoping Traylon could do it since he got drafted.
07:54They've only been, since he's been here.
07:56But I'm saying the league has been hoping or expecting.
07:59So, at this point now, when it happens, I'll place it.
08:04But I'm looking for the guys who did it last year.
08:06They could probably come in here and keep it going.
08:09Yeah.
08:09I mean, if you look at Chig's production over the years, it's been pretty impressive considering the level of quarterback
08:16play in Tennessee.
08:18And, honestly, even beyond that, just super dysfunctional teams.
08:24You've had coaching changes.
08:26Frankly, you've had bad coaching.
08:28I mean, Okokwo, over the last three, really throughout his career, has averaged about 500 yards per season, about 50
08:37catches per season.
08:39You know, averaging about, like, 30 yards a game.
08:43You'd like to see that number up to, like, 50.
08:45Yeah.
08:45You'd like to see, instead of 50 catches, maybe it gets to 65.
08:51You know?
08:52There we go.
08:53There is reason to think Chig could be kind of the breakout piece of this offense.
08:59And I think because they're going to run so many multi-tight end sets, he's going to get a lot
09:04of opportunities.
09:05Like, he's going to be on the field a lot, I believe.
09:08He'll be on the field, and I think when you put three, like, you were talking about 12 and 13
09:11personnel yesterday, you have 13 personnel on the football field offensively.
09:18The defense has to combat that with a run-stopping defense, for the most part.
09:24And normally, you don't have the best coverage guys out there, then.
09:27Another level, another step advantage in his favor.
09:31You know what I mean?
09:32Hell, and then the second tight end, he even basically have an advantage over the guys on the football field
09:37at that time.
09:39So, it's just like, we can't just think it has to be the receiver position.
09:44It has to be.
09:46Because some tight ends are leading their whole damn team in receptions.
09:49The guy up in Oakland, he almost led the league.
09:52Vegas, yeah.
09:53Arizona, too.
09:54Almost led the damn league.
09:56So, we have to open our minds, open our thought process, and understand this could be more than what we
10:03think.
10:04It could be something like other teams are doing.
10:06You think when Kelsey, and you think when the tight end, when Ertz was in Philly, and when the tight
10:13end, when they keep going to their tight end.
10:16Now, we don't know that Chig's going to be at that level.
10:18No, I'm not saying, I'm not trying to say he's going to be at that level, but we only think,
10:24when we listen to everybody call in, they only think it could be a receiver position.
10:29Other teams have done it.
10:30Why can't we?
10:31If you go back to the 2024 season, when this team got to the NFC title game, Terry went for
10:36about 1,100 yards, and their second leading receiver was tight end Zach Ertz, who had 650 yards, seven touchdowns.
10:44Ertz was 34 at that point in his career.
10:47Ertz is a possible Hall of Famer, but they got Ertz later in his career.
10:53And I think they're getting Chig going into the prime of his career.
10:58He's coming off a four-year deal.
11:00He's coming off his rookie deal and now coming to Washington.
11:03And I totally agree with you, Brian, that people get so caught up in wide receiver two, but it could
11:09certainly be the second leading receiver isn't a receiver.
11:13Yeah.
11:13Because even if you go one step further that year, the fifth leading receiver was Austin Eckler, running back.
11:22So when you go back –
11:24And Eckler missed games that year, remember, with the concussions.
11:27Yeah, you go back some years.
11:29Roger Craig had 1,000 and 1,000, right?
11:34We've seen Christian McCaffrey do stuff like that.
11:39It could be from any position, as long as that person is very effective.
11:44When you find a guy on your team, if Chig in preseason and in the inter-squad scrimmages and stuff
11:54show you he has an advantage over most linebackers and safeties, you know what you do?
12:01Start drawing more plays for him.
12:03Right.
12:03You know, you get in the games and you see, okay, this dude, he has an advantage.
12:06Man, that's the guy we're going to look for.
12:09And then all of a sudden now you find defenses start, oh, we didn't expect this.
12:14They got to bring in people to try and stop him.
12:16Hell, you start opening up a running game.
12:17You start finding other avenues to do stuff.
12:20Let's stop lazy thinking.
12:22Nah, let's just get past that.
12:24Other side of the ball.
12:26At this stage, Durante Jones implementing a new defense.
12:32Got to be more aggressive than the last one because that was about as –
12:35Remember the famous Dan Snyder story where he sent the D coordinator a case of vanilla ice cream?
12:42I thought it was Nolan.
12:44Mike, I mean Nolan.
12:45Mike Nolan, yeah.
12:46Case of vanilla ice cream.
12:47He called himself playing.
12:49That's what Joe Witt was doing.
12:51Yeah.
12:51About as vanilla ice cream as it gets, that defense last year.
12:54I think Durante Jones, you already see it.
12:57He is a people, person, relationship builder.
12:59But I do think there is – on the defensive side of the ball, for me, how are you going
13:07to use this speed?
13:08This team has been slow.
13:09Now it's fast, especially in the middle of the field with Leo Chennault and Sonny Stiles.
13:13How do you use them?
13:15How do you engage those guys?
13:16It's just in continuing what they've been doing.
13:20Leo Chennault has been in this league already, and he's used his speed.
13:24He's used his tenacity.
13:25Sonny Stiles was doing it in college.
13:27You don't get him up here and make him become somebody else.
13:30You take what he's shown you, and you improve that.
13:34You build upon that.
13:36Like, you now have guys who you can move around.
13:39They can run.
13:40They can do different things.
13:41Hell, how about Chennault line up in the middle of the linebacker one time?
13:44Sonny's on outside.
13:45Sure.
13:45The next play – I mean, next series, they may switch it up.
13:48You find ways to – hell, Chennault may be – he may have a history with another running back we're
13:54playing against,
13:54so a tight end.
13:55And he normally gets the best of him.
13:57Let him be the cover guy that week.
13:59You've got to find different ways.
14:01And I think for years, football has always been about offensive players and coaches trying to find that matchup where
14:10you have an advantage.
14:11Yep.
14:13Defensive players today are super athletic.
14:16They may have the matchup.
14:18Right.
14:18Like, Monty Colby, you know, I always praise Monty.
14:22Monty, we were going to games when you knew Monty was going to be checking the tight end on the
14:27running back.
14:28Just erase them off the field.
14:30They're not doing nothing that day.
14:32That's the type of stuff that I'm talking about where we should go into games and have an advantage on
14:38our side
14:38instead of always being at a disadvantage.
14:41You want –
14:42I'm totally with you.
14:44You want my low-key storyline that I'm very much watching?
14:49What's that?
14:50I sincerely appreciate it.
14:51We got to talk to Larry Izzo last week, the commander's special teams coordinator.
14:56I think I told you this, that I jokingly asked him if he wanted Sonny Stiles to play specials.
15:01Oh, yeah.
15:01And he just laughed.
15:02He's like, yeah, of course I'd want that guy to play specials.
15:05The kicker battle, dude, this is a real thing.
15:08It ain't low-key.
15:10That's up there already, though.
15:11Jake Moody has shown you he can make kicks.
15:15He's unfortunately shown you he can miss kicks.
