00:11you look you look fantastic why thank you you know coming down i thought a great
00:15a great slogan for your show yes not the hill you want to die on
00:22print the shirts yeah not the hill you want to die on yeah that's pretty good
00:28that's gonna get more american than that yeah this is not the hill i want to die on
00:35yeah you do you look awesome why thank you thank you
00:38i don't go on many tinder dates so this is unusual for me
00:44um this show which you you became a part of a while ago right this whole entire week down here
00:49it's completely elevated it's you guys have done a great job with it oh thank you it's a lot of
00:54fun
00:54we did a lot of charity work and it raises money you know yeah it's good it's good
00:58we try to keep it like you know you got a lot of rich guys but we try to keep
01:03it so it's inclusive
01:04get all kinds of people walking around you know it's just not you know i love pebble beach it's
01:09fun but tickets are like four thousand dollars a ticket and it's good so you get a different class
01:14you know here it's funny you get guys from like in california you get one or two guys that have
01:19hundreds of cars you come here and you got guys that have had a car they've had since high
01:23school and they've been restoring that you know but but i mean that like that vibe is awesome yeah
01:27yeah and it's fun it's fun yeah yeah um well how many cars are you up to these days oh
01:32you sound
01:32like my wife 260 on the road 260 of them yeah you know yeah i did when i did her
01:40show one's that
01:41i always talk about being back east how you know it's just different like i'm taking questions
01:46and he goes yeah what's your question he goes why are you still doing this and i go that's what
01:51you
01:51want to hear after you just did a 90 minute show hey why are you still doing this it's like
01:56the most
01:57new england question you could get why are you still doing this what's the problem well you still
02:02do stand-up how many dates stand-up dates do you do a year 150 200 wow that's pretty cool
02:09why are you doing some people work for a living greg you know what i mean well yeah no we
02:15talk i but i
02:16do think it's interesting because people that's what people say they go oh jay leno he's got all the
02:20money in the world why does he do you do it because you know i'm trying to get all the
02:24money in the
02:24world yeah okay i'm still that you know that is a target that is hard to reach yeah yeah yeah
02:31you have 200 cars that might be the reason why you might not be getting there yeah yeah everyone
02:36would be putting a sticker on every week what i speaking of um money i saw you did a podcast
02:42and
02:42talked about was it when the writer's strike was going on and and you pay you paid all your all
02:49your
02:49people yourself or you or you told the network you didn't want anything and pay them or something
02:55what was that you were recently talking about well hey well that's that's a self-aggrandizing yes
03:00ladies and gentlemen no i no i asked you so it's fine i i love i love the story well
03:06we did you
03:06know when you make ridiculous money and you can't you can't act like you're broke you know
03:12you know yeah you can't so and you know you make such stupid money in show business
03:17we know when i was doing the tonight show at one point i was making 30 million dollars a year
03:21wow that's what it was what year was that that was 90s to early 2000s so what would that be
03:26now
03:26100 100 million a year hang on let me get my account that's not really the point okay sorry
03:32well yeah but but no we need to fight what would that be now bob all right let's go bob
03:37what exactly
03:38would that be now all right you're making 30 million a year no and so the network wasn't doing quite
03:44as
03:45well and everything so they said we've got to lay off some people you know so i said okay um
03:51i said i sat
03:53down with my wife and we realized if we took out twice a month at applebee's we could live on
04:0215 million
04:05and you know there's no difference between 15 million and 30 million i mean there really isn't
04:11it's not like your life changes and from that point on we got the most loyal
04:18crew i didn't have you know cleat lights falling on my head you know you know i didn't have flat
04:23tires
04:24and the great you know i mean i meet so many situations where it's adversarial where the
04:29star of the show is making like crazy money everybody else makes nothing i mean nothing you know
04:34yeah i mean it's just like american you have these gazillionaires and you have these incredibly poor
04:39people we kind of know that feeling here
04:42i'm just busting them well you guys know you work for great yeah it makes a ton of money
04:49but no i have a like a question you talk about we get at 30 million yeah
04:56no you talk about you're still doing stand-up right i'm seeing a lot of let's call them like uh
05:04internet sensations that do these skits and then they try to transition into the world of
05:11stand-up and they start off doing skits on you know social media what do you think of
05:16people like that that you know come up that way in the world you know there's all kinds of ways
05:22to
05:22come up you can come up all different ways you can sleep your way to the top which is enjoyable
05:26and
05:27fun yeah great no you can buy your way to the top that works sometimes or you can work hard
05:33i mean
05:34there's all kinds of ways for example the idea of doing when i started if you were on the carson
05:40show everybody in america saw you now you you got to do 10 or 15 network appearances before people
05:49even recognize you know and now you just like i talk to people go what show you want it's called
05:54happiness what's that on it's on popcorn what's popcorn i what's i know i don't know that i hear
06:00about shows around in their fifth year and i never heard of the show yeah you know so it's just
06:05a
06:05different world you're living but the trick is just you know any way you can make it is fine with
06:10me
06:11you know if i mean there are guys that become internet sensations just doing instagram and stuff
06:17and they sell out auditoriums well good for you it's just a different my way isn't necessarily the
06:23best it just worked for me do you think it's harder now because of the social media element that
06:28everything can get clipped people can get canceled it's all pc now when it comes to comedy you know it's
06:33all look life is what it is it's the same thing uh you know when i was a kid you
06:40can't get a union
06:41with a job you can't get a job without being in the union yeah so quit it can't be done
06:45you're right
06:45it can't it can't be done it's impossible you know i mean life's the hard road it's always going to
06:51be
06:52but like now there are just way more opportunities for example in my day if the carson show and what's
06:59it
06:59whatever else is merv griffin if these three shows didn't like you you weren't on tv i'm sorry that's
07:06it if you piss one guy off on one of those shows you don't work for the rest of your
07:10life really if
07:11the guy is still employed there now you can go other places you can start your own podcast uh
07:17i mean i think it's so much better now because you can you can literally say oh i'm not making
07:21it on
07:22networking i'll start my own network and you go on youtube or something like that and you start
07:27broadcasting and you pick up viewers so i think it's actually much better well is the is that show
07:33going to survive the tonight show the late night shows are those going to survive or are they well
07:39i think you know to me i look i like all the late night shows a letterman and i were
07:43smart we we got
07:44out at the right time but now you know the problem is you have so many commercials i'm so used
07:51like a
07:51turn on peacock and i can watch law and order without a commercial you know ah this is great then
07:56i go to a
07:56talk show you know if i see jake from state farm again i'm going to stab him in the eye
08:03it's just it's every two seconds it's the same thing and the painkiller ad and you know i mean
08:09you watch late night and you have six minutes so it's not i think jim all the jimmies and and
08:14and
08:14and all the other guys they all do a good job they're funny jokes they're good jokes but you've got
08:19you've got these six or seven minute commercial breaks in between which we used to just well that's
08:24that's the way it is now you have a choice and people choose to go to streaming right and but
08:29i saw you say that you really didn't do politics like jimmy kimmel kimmel does politics when you were
08:38doing it no no what i said was uh between john and i had the you made fun of both
08:45sides so you treat
08:47everybody equally now you have such vehemently you know sometimes there's a tendency to put your
08:55political belief ahead of the joke and that to me i think is is is what hurts it and then
09:01you know
09:01guys get mad because you don't believe exactly the way they do because in the real world when you go
09:06out in the real world they play indiana a third of your audience is going to be trumpers you know
09:11they
09:11just talk okay and if you if you're just hammering the guy constantly then that now they're booing
09:16now the audience is like what's going on you know you're trying to focus everybody on one thing so i
09:21just sort of took politics out and let's just do comedy and ticket sales are up 20 30 percent that's
09:26awesome that's great yeah why thank you thank you you're gonna call on that 30 million yeah
09:33i'm working on it now where's bob jay you you talked about like the internet sensation and how
09:39people are using social media to their advantage when it comes to becoming comics they might start
09:44out doing skits and then move their way to stand up do you think part of the you know why
09:50late night
09:51could potentially just talk shows in general could possibly kind of be potentially you know becoming
09:56extinct is because there's so many podcasts too now where you're able to see all your different
10:01celebrities or people you enjoy podcasts are better i mean you can you can turn on a late night
10:06show and see harrison ford for seven minutes or you can watch harrison ford speak his mind off the top
10:12of his head for an hour on a streaming show and it's much easier i mean rogan has become sort
10:19of like
10:19the new johnny carson show you go on there way more people see you on rogan than see you on
10:24network tv
10:25yeah so yeah yeah high day show with a whole bunch of incredible people and jay leno and nick schorsch
10:34who
10:35is our host down here yeah every year uh for this great event thanks so you guys keep i was
10:41saying to
10:41jay you got you keep adding events and making it better so how many people does this bring to newport
10:46would you get it'll bring about 50 000 between what they the people that attend the concourse and the
10:51motor week but also the people that just it's free for a lot of things so they just come from
10:55the
10:56neighborhood they come from you know the distance whether it's aquitnic island or it's coming in from
11:00connecticut and they just enjoy the streets and they look at all the cars and we line them up
11:05on saturday after the tour of all the concourse cars and they just people wander for two hours yeah
11:10that's a free car show free yeah yeah everything at the motor village is free that's awesome uh there's uh
11:16and then there's an event at one of the famous mansions uh today today the gathering is that
11:22rough point who is rough point who's that's somebody famous doris duke doris duke wow who uh was was
11:30was that tobacco yeah tobacco right tobacco fortune it's called rough point because of her sexual activity
11:39was she very active uh into her well i don't want to get into it really it's just
11:44so but she had like an odd incident where she was like her her chauffeur was her lover
11:52am i correct about this i like see that's when you know when you're rich you know what she did
11:55she ran him over with her car she did but when you're rich it's an odd incident
12:01yes when you're a regular person stupid bastard right yeah she was hooking up with the chauffeur and
12:07then she ran him over well accidentally accidentally and then the newport police uh said it was an accident
12:14right except if you backed over him again yeah that was it or she put it in reverse and then
12:19yeah
12:19so there's still a lot we have a we have an answer on the 30 million oh okay now according
12:25to dr reason
12:26a goodman of the world book who is the authority uh it's 60.3 million dollars 60 right now it
12:34would
12:34double yeah that's not bad so you gave up so that you could keep people working for you give you
12:40gave up
12:4030 million dollars when you when you did that with nbc oh you're going by now yeah yeah sure that's
12:46it
12:46yeah yeah that's it good karma yeah yeah it's great it's great karma fantastic karma um the weather is
12:53cooperating so it's uh now any cars that we should be on the lookout that are down here yes there's
12:58there's there's a number of cars there's a 1935 uh uh i mean 135 delahay that was uh the winner
13:05in
13:05its class of pebble beach there's a uh in the classic car concours and a number of other amazing cars
13:11that
13:11came in from all around the world and there's a couple deusbergs and at the same time this is greg
13:17hill you
13:18gotta say there's a 68 nova he doesn't know delahay he doesn't know i don't know any of them yeah
13:24guys
13:25showed up with a 62 ford falcon six cylinder three on the tree fantastic car yeah fantastic cat
13:32i just saw his eyes glaze over when you said delahay and he said what the hay no delahay
13:41do you drive all your cars jay or no no i push them around yes of course i mean don't
13:49be
13:49confrontational i mean do you are there any that you don't drive no i drive them all because they're
13:54so valuable or whatever no no you can't be there no this is okay i don't want to eat this
13:58food it's
13:59so delicious i'll just sit there you know it's the same thing don't order a steak and let's look at
14:03it
14:03for a while well that's a good point though because one of the one of the cars that's here for
14:07the
14:07supercar hypercar concourse every one of those cars went out on the road yesterday and you know
14:14a lot of times you see in other other concourse or motor motor events they really shun the modern cars
14:22so we discussed it this year and we added a hypercar supercar concourse which is saturday at the fort
14:30and those cars were all on the road yesterday and it was great because all the people who were
14:35influencers and the youtubers we gave them some rather than make them chase around town to find
14:39the cars right that we put them on the road and everybody drove them there was a um you know
14:44one
14:45of three mclaren f1s which is not a delahay yeah and uh and he was it was car was on
14:51the road and
14:52it was amazing to see these cars driven and like jay said you know it's a great steak why leave
14:56it on the
14:57table wiggie's wiggie's dream wiggie won a super bowl but that's not good enough his dream is to
15:02have uh uh ferrari no it's the uh uh bentley flying spur four-door v12 and a yacht he also
15:10won those are available it costs a little bit of money i was gonna ask this question what's the
15:15most expensive car that you've seen or you know you've come around in your life well the mclaren f1
15:24is pretty expensive okay ferrari gtos i mean those are like god a ferrari gtos sold for 75 million
15:30wow what 75 million yeah 75 million why is it 75 million dollars oh i'm sorry because it's a very
15:38expensive car but like what does it have a house in it 75 million dollars that's they made 36 of
15:44them
15:45you know what it is oh so it's rare if you got there you have now when i was a
15:49kid if you were
15:50a millionaire that was good enough now the forbes 400 is all billionaires you know so it it just goes
15:57up if you're a billionaire hundreds i mean thousand dollar bills are like hundred dollar bills so
16:02the price just if two guys two billionaires want this ferrari it goes to 75 million if only one wants
16:09it it goes for 10 million you know yeah if you take money out of it what's your favorite car
16:13to drive
16:15oh i i got all kinds i like to drive them i like to drive it's just fun to me
16:19you know driving and
16:21eating eating in the car while you're moving that's like oh i'm doing two things at once
16:25i ever since i was a kid i always like that yeah did you you were you just brought up
16:29uh being a
16:29kid did you i guarantee you you had an am fm converter in one of your cars you're guaranteeing
16:36that um no actually i didn't you know the stuff i bought was 34 fords and different things like
16:43that and no radio the am work you hear the hum and then the guy comes on and talks you
16:49know now you
16:50get in the car you got to hook it to your phone you like this selection yes would you make
16:53it again i
16:54certainly would how often three times a week what english i think i'd like to listen to it in
16:59english no yeah it's too annoying you know you drive a 51 hudson horn you turn the radio
17:05yeah it's a lot of fun so no i didn't have an amf you did you never had an amf
17:10no no but
17:11you know uh a track uh in any of your vehicles when you're yeah i got a car that's got
17:15an eight
17:16track don't listen to it much anymore surprisingly it's not available really it's just that it's the
17:22clunk every time you want to change you know when you change the you know it's like you gotta pull
17:28a handle and go to the next track so 75 deville with the diamond in the back when you you
17:33guys
17:33talked about like the different cars because you said like you know like maybe not everybody's into
17:39the 1930s i feel like right the resurgent that that i've seen is like people are now getting into
17:45like the iroxies from like the late 80s well what you have now is that it moves 20 years
17:51for example there's a thing called radwood now that we have a young timers thing and to them
17:56old i had a kid come up to me he goes oh miss leno i collect antique cars i said
18:01what do you
18:01got he goes 91 miata and i went well that's well he was born in 90 right right so that's
18:07an old car i
18:08mean you you forget that you know i mean when i bought my 34 ford i was 16 it was
18:12only 30 years
18:13old right you know so yes it's just fun to watch it you know it's a bit like music you
18:18go through
18:20the 50s music and then rock and roll and then rap and then you know so it's fun it's fun
18:26did you use
18:27when you were doing stand-up did you used to open up for rock acts because that was like a
18:31thing that
18:31used to happen a lot i don't think it happened yes that was i remember i i was opening for
18:36rare earth
18:36remember them get ready get ready so i'm on stage and i'm holding the mic and i can see
18:43the cord to the mic goes off the stage down into the crowd and i go well that doesn't look
18:50good
18:51and i'm talking then bink the mic is out of my hand hey larry you suck so so now i
18:56run off the stage
18:57and i'm i'm looking excuse me i'm trying to follow the chord you know but i completely disappeared and
19:03the promoter charged me 75 dollars for losing the mic and what were you paid for the gig 100
19:09probably something like that yeah yeah but it does it seems like it was a it could be a bad
19:13situation because you got a bunch of rare earth people right and then they're like they're like
19:18watching it well you know it's interesting there used to be a club here in boston called lenny's on
19:21the turnpike it used to be out on route one just a funny name too and i went down there
19:27and i
19:27auditioned for lenny and he said oh because i i played strip joints in the in the combat zone
19:34and all that kind of stuff i work with would you go on before the strippers or were they in
19:38between
19:39oh wow okay okay no no i don't mean actually in between the strippers i mean i you wouldn't
19:46have said well see in those days it was dan and and and and and they take off the gloves
19:51and you wait
19:51a half hour and they take off the hat they come on wearing like wool suits it's just like an
19:56hour
19:56together now they run out naked and that's it thank you goodbye next girl you know but back then
20:00it was there was some art to it yeah slow art but yeah yeah yeah so anyway so lenny's on
20:10the turnpike
20:12it was a jazz club and it was the first place ever worked where they introduced you and people
20:18and listen because they're jazz so you know i used to open for miles davis dan getz mose allison not
20:25much
20:25mile rush on rowan kirk uh dave brubeck i mean it was all the famous jazz hat uh acts of
20:32the 60s and
20:3270s you know and it was great it was a great learning experience it was it was this was a
20:37fun place to
20:38to grow up yeah i was gonna you know i was gonna ask the mount rush one but i feel
20:41like everybody does
20:42that who's the one comedian in your time that you maybe saw and you go like wow this this guy
20:51a girl is
20:52like gonna be different oh i do right away you mean like start somebody early yeah or i do not
20:56want to go behind them i do not want to do you want to go behind them you know richie
21:00prior was the
21:01best we it's so funny i knew him as richie prior now he's richard prior you know he's just so
21:06funny
21:06but yeah richie was great i mean just really really funny naturally funny and um he was doing it getting
21:16ready to do something called live in the sunset strip and that was the first time a comedian's
21:21act had been filmed for theatrical release because richie was getting he was pretty popular then but
21:27he's also getting a little weak and you know a little not feeling quite so they figured they'd do
21:32this thing so he would go on at the comedy store every night and just blow the room out i
21:38mean these
21:38people i mean people grabbing their sides slowly laughing so hard you know so i said to missy can i
21:44follow him every night and i found out i didn't have an hour's worth of material i had about 12
21:50minutes but then i realized if i just do the 12 minutes in it so it was a great learning
21:55experience
21:55you know comics are pretty lazy they tend to go where they know they do well you get successful
22:01when you go to places where you don't do well you know i used to go into bars in boston
22:06i put 50 on
22:07the bar and i'd say the budget i gotta first i say can i get up and tell jokes now
22:11and i take out
22:1250 i said tell you what if i go up and i get no laughs you keep the 50 if
22:17i get laughs just give
22:18me the 50 back that cost me about 500 but what would that be today
22:26bob can we get that today 500 today but uh but that was that was a learning experience but it
22:35was
22:35good and that's how you get better it you know i always tell boston comics as soon as you make
22:40it here
22:41get out go to next place when you got 20 minutes on the sitcom sign in kenmore square and you
22:47go to
22:47hartford and people go what are you talking about yeah yeah yeah because so you so you can be start
22:53and
22:54everything is local and then go somewhere else and and your your act is more national well yeah you just
23:01want to you want to work to a wider audience you know you want to work and you know working
23:05clean is
23:06i have nothing against guys that work dirty it's just you don't get you you rock it to the middle
23:12and then you're not getting the big corporate date you're not getting you know yeah it's like porn
23:16stars you know there are only porn stars there are no porn character actors
23:22the minute you get into porn from day one you are a star you are a porn star
23:28not bad yeah but yeah yeah yeah i'm trying to think about that couldn't you uh say that about
23:36going out of your comfort zone that part of the issue with today's comedy you talked about the
23:40political jokes all being one-sided it's far more difficult to do what you did which was to be equal
23:45no it's not my it's all equal it's not i didn't do anything it's just a matter of
23:52comedy like radio like tv you need viewers and you need people to come and buy a ticket
23:58and whoever buys the ticket i mean they're guys that work completely opposite the way i do
24:03and they sell million tickets you know but they don't get corporate dates which is really where the
24:09big money is i mean those are those will pay you five times what your normal fee is just if
24:13you
24:13don't use the f-word you know that's all that's all that's all i ask and they're easy to do
24:18and
24:18they're they're fun you know so yeah but not my way work for me but i always tell people starting
24:24out at least if you work clean you'll always i mean nate bagazzi is a good example of this works
24:29totally clean he's like you know yeah he's really good yeah he's great guy yeah it's like it's like
24:35christian clean but it's really funny and it's if it's funny that cancels everything else out who else
24:40now makes you laugh oh god you know i like comics i like everybody shane gillis i mean uh dave
24:47chappelle
24:47i mean i like everybody i mean i i i admire anybody that can can make it in this business
24:53because it's a little it's a little tricky what would you have done if will smith did what he did
24:58to uh chris rock chris rock to you what if you were hosting the oscars and will smith came up
25:05and
25:05slapped you well i i'm not quite sure what i would do it i don't know he's bigger than me
25:12and younger
25:13than me so i would think he would win the fight probably well will smith punched you in the face
25:19what do you think well you're a comedian it happened to a comedian it was kind of a big
25:24moment well yeah but he was talking about the guy's wife yeah but you know i think that is a
25:29classic
25:29case of you ever watch a movie and you think yeah like boy i could be like that guy and
25:34do that and
25:35then you do it and hey well there's a great scene in the movie tootsie that always made me laugh
25:40where remember he doesn't know how to dress up as a woman so he's a woman he's talking to this
25:46girl he
25:46wants to date as a woman and she's gone ah i just wish a man would grab me and rip
25:52my clothes off and
25:53have sex with me on the bed okay so couple we see it he goes out we're on a date
25:57and he he goes let me
25:59grab you and he slaps him in the face and beats the crap out you know you know it just
26:03made me laugh
26:03the difference between reality and what you would actually but you might actually yeah yeah exactly
26:08exactly yeah i i wanted to ask you this jay because you just you brought this up and it's interesting
26:13when you talk about as a comic and trying to find the audience that like understands your comedy
26:20do you feel like that is a a difficult thing to do or do you feel like all right i
26:25have to stay
26:26within my lane of the people that are gonna understand my comedy you know i mean like you're
26:32from up north if you go down south and you start talking about you know what it's like living up
26:36north they might not really understand well yeah exactly yeah it's exactly true you try to find
26:42universal jokes i mean obviously uh you know if you're doing the the young christians convention
26:49you're going to do different material than you would if you were playing you know down in the
26:53combat zone you know but yeah yeah that's fair to say i felt like what if you're doing the young
26:56christians conference in the combat zone that's right well it's amazing how many young christians
27:02you find in the combat zone and the reason why i asked you that because when i asked you about
27:06comedy and you bring up richard prior and i mean obviously i'm a huge fan of him you know i'm
27:11obviously remember from the car wash the movie the mac and when you see him being able to go
27:17and his comedy it didn't matter the like what race creed color you were he was able to make how
27:25difficult does that have to be as a comedic to be able to first of all just you write a
27:31joke first
27:32and then you figure out how to make it appeal to people sometimes like i like to write just simple
27:37like this joke guy goes to the doctor doc says what's the matter says doc it hurts when i press
27:44on my
27:45rib cage it hurts when i press on my forehead it hurts when i press on my cheekbone and it
27:51hurts when
27:51i press on my shoulder doc says you got a broken finger you know pretty come on but i mean
27:59that's not
28:03but i mean you know let's see now how would african americans of the muslim face think of that
28:09it's just a joke it doesn't matter that's the idea all right well it's it's awesome that you guys
28:16have us here every year thank you very much well thanks for coming i appreciate it bunch bunch of
28:20events uh i think there's a new event this afternoon which is called whiskey on the water
28:26right at the reef yeah that doesn't sound dangerous does it whiskey on the water well you're on a dot
28:31followed by risky on route 128 and it's sponsored this year it's sponsored mccallon came in this year
28:36to uh to work with us and they're doing the entire event so it's all mccallon product and awesome and
28:42there's some tickets still available for that if people want to go to that and then this morning
28:46they start uh 11 o'clock at the gathering which is kind of a giant car lawn party at rough
28:52point so
28:53awesome and we do have dars duke did a lot of weird things besides just running over her chauffeur
28:58and successfully killing him but um she also had camels on the property and they during storms she
29:06put them in the sunroom so i don't know how many people put camels in their sunrooms but she did
29:10that
29:11but now they have topiary camels on the lawn so we'll have cars and food and why don't you bring
29:16in real camels it's kind of illegal oh it is okay yeah browned upon well just use jay's name yeah
29:23work if anybody you know greg hill uh so doris duke that's that's money that's real money if you
29:30just have camels running around your mansion yeah in newport it was part of an airplane deal yeah
29:35she got a commercial airliner with three camels and um so she did some unusual things but yes she did
29:40it was an it's an amazing facility but you're on the water and it's a great day and it's gonna
29:44be
29:45great weather so we're pleased it's awesome that we're here you guys thank you both very much thanks
