Scientists at the University of Leeds developed an artificial intelligence system that can predict a person's risk of a heart attack by simply scanning their eyes. The research, published in Nature Machine Intelligence, showed that routine retinal scans can reveal hidden cardiovascular problems.
During routine eye exams, opticians often capture images of the retina at the back of the eye. The AI system learns to read tiny changes in the retinal blood vessels, estimating the size and pumping efficiency of the heart's left ventricle. An enlarged ventricle significantly raises the chance of heart disease.
Traditionally, checking heart health requires costly hospital tests like magnetic resonance imaging or echocardiograms. This deep learning model achieved between seventy and eighty percent accuracy using only cheap, non invasive retinal photography.
Doctors believe this technology could soon allow regular high street opticians to screen patients for cardiovascular danger years before any symptoms appear. Would you trust an automated eye scan to evaluate your heart health?
