For thousands of years, people created a hard waterproof material using simple ingredients from the kitchen. By mixing warm milk with an acid like vinegar, a natural polymer called casein separates from the liquid. This process creates casein plastic, a natural substance that was actually used commercially for decades before modern synthetic plastics took over.

In the early twentieth century, manufacturers used casein plastic to make buttons, jewelry, fountain pens, and decorative items. Even Queen Mary of the United Kingdom owned jewelry made from this milk based material. The chemical reaction happens because the acid changes the pH level of the milk, causing the protein molecules to unfold and link together into tight chains.

To try this at home, heat one cup of milk until it is hot but not boiling. Stir in four tablespoons of white vinegar, and small white curds will form instantly. Strain the mixture through a cloth, squeeze out the extra liquid, and knead the soft dough into any shape you want. After drying for forty eight hours, the mold becomes as hard as stone.
