Creating a homemade lava lamp is a classic science experiment that demonstrates the principles of liquid density and chemical reactions. By pouring water and vegetable oil into a clear bottle, you can clearly observe that oil floats on top of water because it is less dense and nonpolar.
When food coloring is added, it drops through the oil layer and dissolves entirely in the water below. Adding an effervescent antacid tablet creates a sudden chemical reaction with the water, producing carbon dioxide gas bubbles that attach to the colored water drops.
These gas bubbles float up through the oil layer to the surface. Once the gas escapes at the top, the heavy colored water droplets sink back down to the bottom, creating a mesmerizing lava lamp effect.
