The elephant toothpaste experiment is one of the most famous and visually striking chemistry demonstrations in the world. It involves mixing concentrated hydrogen peroxide, liquid dish soap, and a catalyst such as potassium iodide or dry yeast mixed with warm water.

Hydrogen peroxide naturally decomposes into water and oxygen gas over time, but this process is usually very slow. When the catalyst is added, it rapidly accelerates the breakdown of the hydrogen peroxide molecules. The sudden release of large amounts of oxygen gas gets trapped inside the soapy liquid, generating a massive column of hot, steaming foam that shoots out of the container.

Because the reaction is highly exothermic, it produces noticeable heat along with oxygen and water vapor. Teachers and scientists around the globe use this experiment to show how catalysts work without being consumed in a chemical reaction. Have you ever tried making this foaming reaction at home?
