Why did Sindh and the Arab world come into conflict?

For centuries, Sindh stood at the crossroads of South Asia, Persia, and the Arab world. By the early 8th century, tensions along these frontiers had already begun to grow.

Then came the incident at Debal.

A ship carrying Muslim women, children, and gifts from the ruler of Sarandib was attacked by pirates near the Sindhi coast. The incident became a major political dispute between Hajjaj ibn Yusuf and Raja Dahir.

But was the stolen ship really the only reason for the Arab invasion of Sindh?

In Episode 3 of our **History of Sindh** series, we examine the events that led to the conflict — the strategic importance of Debal, relations between Sindh and the Arab world, the situation in Makran, the Alafi rebels who found refuge in Sindh, Raja Dahir's response, and the two failed Arab military expeditions that came before Muhammad bin Qasim.

The evidence suggests a more complicated picture.

The ship incident may have provided the immediate justification, but the tensions between Sindh and the Arab world had deeper political, military, and strategic roots.

We also examine an important question: **Why did two earlier Arab expeditions fail at Debal, and why was Muhammad bin Qasim chosen for the third attempt?**

This episode explores one of the major turning points in the history of Sindh and the early medieval Indian subcontinent.

Historical sources for this series include the **Chach Nama**, Arabic and Persian historical traditions, and modern historical research. Where significant differences exist between sources, they are treated with caution rather than presented as unquestionable fact.

**This is where the road to Muhammad bin Qasim begins.**
