Leftover supporter towels inspired Dragons fan Drina Weatherhead to tackle textile waste through upcycling projects using old NRL merch
Transcript
00:00My name is Drina Weatherhead and I made this Upcycle Dragons jacket.
00:04I'm super passionate about upcycling, which is taking textile and fashion waist
00:08and turning it into something new that will last a little bit longer.
00:12When I found the Dragons towels on the ground at the game,
00:16I just kind of was inspired to turn it into something that wouldn't end up with the towels going to
00:22the bin
00:22and I could wear it as well as something kind of fashionable.
00:25A few months ago, if you told me that I would have other teams other than Dragons in my house,
00:31my boyfriend probably would have freaked out.
00:32So the fact that now I'm actually upcycling pieces and have a bunch of other sport memorabilia in my sewing
00:39room is kind of wild.
00:41Jackets take probably the longest just because there's so much surface area.
00:44It's so dependent on the piece.
00:47Maximum, probably 40 hours. Minimum, I'd say about 10.
00:51Sports and fashion, they're kind of starting to collide.
00:55And I don't want to generalize, but I feel like a lot of people who do watch sport are maybe
01:01men
01:01who maybe don't really think about the fashion world or any kind of like fashion statistics.
01:07I just kind of wanted to bring attention to textile and fashion waist.
01:13And my passion was I do love sports.
01:16So they kind of just started to go hand in hand.
01:19And I guess when my first video went viral, I was introduced to how many people kind of cared about
01:26it.
01:27I love when people are passionate about their team.
01:30And I love, you know, when you see in the stadium, everyone has the team matching colors, which is so
01:35exciting.
01:36But when you hand out all this free stuff at the beginning of the game, majority of the time,
01:41as I've seen at the games that I've gone to, that stuff is just left on the ground.
01:45Just kind of trying to do something with the stuff that's on the ground or at least prompt people's mind
01:51that are going to the games
01:52that when they're walking out of the stadium or when they're deciding to leave that flag on the ground,
01:56they're thinking twice about it.
01:58And that that means having them are like proces punching, skimediminguished,
02:03and stitch, you won't need a solo Allan Librier.
02:04Please reframe how many people work on them their episodes just the time a bit.
02:04Please take those pictures of their brothers on the ground or your temples in their hands.
02:04Remember this for this series.
02:04And find clear what you've got from your family.
02:05Then maybe five weeks of seeing each other,
