00:00The long-awaited report on the Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire is finally out.
00:06The Independent Commission appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom has produced a 723-page report
00:12documenting all of the various failures that went into the massive disaster
00:17that took place on January 7, 2025 and in the days thereafter.
00:21The report is comprehensive, and that's both a strength and a weakness.
00:25It's a strength because it includes everything from water policy to firefighting
00:31to coordination between various agencies to the problems in communication and evacuation.
00:37But it's also a weakness because after looking at the report,
00:42it's very hard to know exactly what to do differently.
00:46It's so complex that it gets in its own way.
00:50It's written in a style that's just too verbose,
00:54that's hard for the public to read and understand.
00:57There are a few key points, however, that this report states that might make a difference.
01:02One of them is that the state parks did not coordinate their wildfire policy with other agencies.
01:09And that's a key point because, as the California Post reported,
01:12the state parks adopted a new policy just weeks before the fire
01:15that prevented heavy firefighting equipment from being brought onto state parkland
01:20because it would endanger Native American cultural artifacts or rare species of wildflowers.
01:27And this was self-defeating because, of course, when the fire sweeps through,
01:31it destroys a lot of that stuff anyway,
01:32but also because it just didn't take into account the fact that many of these state parks
01:37are right up against urban areas.
01:39And that was certainly the case in the Palisades and Eaton fires
01:42where homes were next to brush that ignited
01:45and communities had to run for their lives.
01:48So there's a lot still to do in understanding what went wrong,
01:52but this report is certainly going to provide some food for thought and debate.
