00:00Let's listen to Kenyatta. He was talking about giving up almost 200 yards rushing.
00:04Not a great day, obviously, for the Ohio State defense.
00:08You know, coaches got on Sunday. It's fixed.
00:10You know, there's rough Sundays, Sunday call outs.
00:13I think we've got some audio from him. We click through that.
00:16If I'm not mistaken, there we go.
00:18I mean, it's all fixable. So Coach Patricia, Coach Johnson, they already, you know,
00:24talked to us on Sunday and it's fixed.
00:25So I think people were just trying to make plays, trying to be, you know, play hero ball
00:30instead of doing their job, standing in the gaps.
00:32But I mean, it's all fixable.
00:34So Coach Patricia, Coach Johnson, they already, you know, talked to us on Sunday and it's fixed.
00:39So he brought up something, you know, hero ball right there.
00:42Why don't you give us your definition of what you determine hero ball to be as you see it?
00:49I kind of like hero ball a little bit.
00:51Hero ball is going outside of the scheme, not doing what you're supposed to because you
00:56want to go out and make a play.
00:57But I think in some ways, hero ball is kind of fun and needed in certain circumstances.
01:04I think of a guy like Mike Hall, like if he's supposed to stay in the A gap, there are
01:09times
01:09where he's just going to swim, go all the way out to the seat, but he's going to make
01:12a play. And that's kind of where the problem with hero ball is.
01:15If he does that and he doesn't make the play, next thing you know, you've got the A and B
01:18gap completely open.
01:19You've got Lyman coming up to the linebackers and it could be an explosive run.
01:23On the other hand, if he's able to swim, somehow get all the way around the tackle and then
01:27make a TFL in the back of the backfield, that looks awesome.
01:30So my whole thing is hero ball is good if you make the play.
01:34And right now guys are playing hero ball and they're not making the play.
01:37So that's kind of where you're seeing this disconnect where guys are going outside of
01:41the scheme and they're not making plays.
01:43You know, I always remember Luke Fickle saying this, that I'm listening to James and his meetings.
01:49It's very similar listening to Fick.
01:52And, you know, sometimes you're supposed to have contain steel or get over top of a block
01:58and you look and there might be what you would call a run through an opening in the line of
02:03scrimmage where you have a chance where if I get over the top, it's maybe a two or three
02:08yard gain, not terrible, but it's going to be a tougher play.
02:12I got to get off this guy.
02:15He's probably going to hold me.
02:16Or you could shoot it or backdoor it and you're going behind the block.
02:21You're kind of giving up your job.
02:23And they would say like, close the door from behind.
02:26But Fick would always tell us, if you take it, you better make it.
02:30You got to make it.
02:31If you don't make it, it's going to be a tough day on Sunday.
02:34James would say the exact same thing in meetings.
02:37And so, like, and it's a fine line because people are like, hey, we want production.
02:41We want production.
02:42We want production.
02:42That's what we kept hearing.
02:43Production, production, production.
02:45And some of it is experience, like we were talking about with some of the, you know,
02:49especially on the, with guys, like when you can learn when to maybe backdoor play.
02:54And maybe you said, I'll call it hero ball because there is a fine line with don't be a
03:00James.
03:00Also, Fick would also, don't be a robot just because like, oh, I have to get over the top.
03:04He goes, if you can run through and make it, go do it.
03:07But that's putting the onus on you as a player.
03:09And so still, that's where experience comes in.
03:12We're like, hey, it's, you know, a third and seven and they're running this or whatever
03:17it is.
03:18If I just get over there and do my job, they're getting three or four yards.
03:22Yeah.
03:23If it's first and 10, I can shoot it.
03:25Like, and it's maybe a little different of like knowing those scenarios and then figuring
03:29out your speed and the talent around you.
03:31Like, I'll see you next time.
