00:01Now, most migration agents do the right thing, but we are saying we're going to make a change
00:06to stop migration agents from being able to lodge unmeritorious claims. Frankly, often
00:12taking money from people at very vulnerable moments in their life for claims that have
00:17no prospect of success. Some of the worst practices that I see in my electorate office
00:22and indeed now in my ministerial work actually come from migration lawyers, not from agents.
00:27So, we've said we'll talk with the Attorney General, I spoke with her last week and through
00:32her the Standing Council of Attorneys General to look at options to regulate the interaction
00:39of lawyers with the migration system and prevent lawyers as well from lodging unmeritorious
00:44claims which are a subversion of the migration system. These are not controversial propositions,
00:49we're not getting into some race to the bottom with One Nation or the Liberal Party trashing
00:53the national interest, trashing large sectors of the economy. These are balanced, sensible
00:59measures that will do the job to get us that bit further down to see migration fall, that
01:04bit further down to the forecasts in the budget, restoring the balance with housing and allowing
01:10housing a chance to catch up. But doing so in a way that recognises the value of migration
01:15to Australia, of a controlled and orderly system that's good for the economy and good to families.
01:20Allegra Spender spoke last night actually at the dinner I was at, a really thoughtful speech,
01:24I wish more members of parliament could engage in that way and she summed it up as the system
01:28is about the economy and love and that's not a bad summary.
