On the remote Galápagos Islands of Wolf and Darwin, a tiny songbird has developed one of the most unusual survival strategies in the animal kingdom. The vampire ground finch, a subspecies of the sharp beaked ground finch, lives in an extremely harsh environment where fresh water and seeds are exceptionally scarce for most of the year.

To survive these severe droughts, the finches targeted a much larger neighbor, the Nazca booby. Using their sharp, pointed beaks, the finches peck at the base of the booby's feathers until they break the skin and draw blood. Surprisingly, the boobies rarely fight back, likely because the finches also remove harmful parasites from their feathers.

Blood has become a crucial source of nutrition and fluid for these small birds when other food sources dry up completely. Beyond drinking blood, these clever finches also crack open seabird eggs by rolling them into rocks. Would you ever expect a finch to become a blood drinker?
