00:02City Beach is still close to swimmers as the 31 tonne whale which washed ashore here on Monday begins to
00:07putrefy.
00:08The town of Cambridge had planned to remove the carcass yesterday morning but it proved too heavy for the excavator.
00:14A heavy duty crane has now been deployed to lift the whale in its netting onto a truck bed.
00:19It will then be buried in landfill.
00:21It looks like these guys know what they're doing so it's probably a good thing to just let them go
00:28and see the outcome.
00:29It's an amazing sight especially somebody who comes down like these gentlemen behind me every day.
00:38The operation is expected to cost up to $100,000 though the council has not ruled out asking the state
00:45government to foot some of the bill.
00:47The council says landfill is the only option as towing the carcass out to sea would attract even more sharks.
00:53The beach will remain closed until authorities are confident the increased shark threat has subsided.
