00:02One of the ocean's mightiest creatures left to decay.
00:08Lifeguards found the carcass on rocks between Coogee and Maroubra.
00:13We have closed Coogee and Maroubra beaches for today.
00:19And whilst that is inconvenient, it is the safest approach.
00:22They'll keep an eye on it over coming days, hoping it'll wash out to sea with the high tide.
00:28We're not allowed now to tow them out to sea because it's become a navigational hazard.
00:34So the options that have been used over recent years is take them to landfill,
00:38which causes distress to our community.
00:41As authorities wait to see whether nature will take its course,
00:45locals who frequent the area say they'll be giving this section of the coast a wide berth.
00:51I find sharks interesting, but yeah, when something like that can put them into a frenzy.
00:56I think I'd give it a rest for a day or two.
00:58Hundreds of kilometres away, Tasmanian authorities tried to save this sperm whale,
01:03but it died this afternoon.
01:05Unfortunately the whale just got pushed in a little bit at high tide,
01:08rather than getting pulled out.
