00:05can J.J. McCarthy save the Giants season? I don't know why people are framing that narrative
00:11because they're 2-1 so he doesn't need to save the season but can it be effective if he steps
00:17in
00:18it has to be QB1 at one point. Let's take a look at the numbers from his one year in
00:23Minnesota
00:23140 completions on 243 attempts that's 57.6 completion percentage 1,632 yards passing 11
00:35touchdowns 12 interceptions but that's in 10 starts as a rookie and I air quote that rookie
00:42thrust into action his best stretch was his final four starts 64.3 percent completion percentage
00:49703 yards passing five touchdowns and only two interceptions that was good for a QB rating of
00:57100.4 that's a completely different quarterback by years in that means he got better as his season
01:04went along and his best game of the season came in prime time versus surprise surprise the Cowboys
01:10where he threw for three tutties I think he's mobile enough to extend plays and create off schedule
01:16which as a wide receiver I love and that fits the John Harbaugh offense that wants to stay ahead of
01:22the chains on early downs so let's see what J.J. McCarthy could bring to the Giants offense
01:28if he ever has to step up and be QB1 at some point this season in this blue rush player
01:34breakdown
01:40all right J.J. McCarthy when you watch the tape on him you'll see that he's basically a carbon copy
01:47of Jackson Dart I don't know if you can call him Jackson Dart but 0.5 or Jackson Dart light
01:53because I guess you know Jackson's had a little bit more success in the NFL than him but when you
01:59watch the tape on some of the throws that he's made and his mobility and his usage of the legs
02:05it makes sense why they went and traded for him he fits this Matt Nagy offense more than Jameis
02:14Winston or any other quarterback on the Giants roster so I got two throws for you three runs
02:20and we'll break this tape down but first let's watch this throw to Justin Jefferson
02:29good ball good ball got punched in the mouth or he got hit while he threw it still was able
02:36to
02:36deliver it now this is just to kind of show that show you guys the arm strength the arm strength
02:40is there don't worry too much about route concepts or anything like that I'm not trying to break down
02:45protections just want to show what J.J. McCarthy could bring to these wide receivers you're able to push
02:51the football down the field like you can with Jameis as well but off this play action this guy shows
02:58the
02:58arm strength to be able to throw it from the far hash to the to the sideline that's not a
03:04that's not
03:05an easy throw and defenders can if it's late they can undercut it if you don't have enough juice or
03:11enough mustard or hot sauce on it then they could get there as well so you see Justin uh you
03:17see I
03:18believe this is Jalen Rager running a pylon route he's going in and he's going up that's a deep shot
03:23if they want to take this but the Bears look like they're running some sort of cover too
03:27Justin Jefferson gets his depth so let's say this is uh the yard line is the the yard line is
03:36the 35
03:3735 that's 20 it's about a 28 19 to 20 yard throw but again he is in the backside hash
03:47he's on the
03:48backside and he's got a defender a big dude with rocking number 69 so that's you know that's they may
03:55cut this or not but that's crazy within itself ready to to hit him 300 something probably 300 pounds
04:03ready to hit him in the mouth and he still sits in the pocket and he's able to throw a
04:10dart and a dime
04:12to Justin Jefferson on the sideline for a big completion off of the play action so that kind of
04:18shows you what J.J. McCarthy has in his arm and how he'll still be able to push the football
04:25down the
04:25field for Matt Nagy and this Giants offense and if you're I guess this Justin Jefferson here if you're
04:32Malik neighbors you want that because you don't want to be running little quick routes the entire
04:36the entire game uh you want them to push the football down the field and get you the rock
04:45all right next play I think he hits Jalen Rager here let's watch it and this just gets goes to
04:52show
04:52he's got some touch on these deep balls could throw to the opposite shoulder puts the receiver
04:58in position to get some yak it's all about yak these Giants receivers are going to have to get yak
05:03because they're pair it's it's you're you're complementary to the run game so when you get the
05:10opportunity one you need a great blocking from the offensive line two you need a service of
05:16serviceable football and then you got to be a catch and run wide receiver again don't need to break
05:22down the route concept too much but we will highlight again he is on the back side hash again
05:28and he's throwing a deep route um to the far side of the football field so we're highlighting the arm
05:36strength and the touch on some of these throws whether it be clean pocket or when he getting hit in
05:43the
05:43mouth watch Rager here they got a nice little rub route rub route action here this receiver is going to
05:50run this curl you could call this a box fade slot fade whatever you want to call it there's different
05:55terminologies throughout the course of the NFL but let's highlight how this receiver is here he's
06:01holding his line he split the difference between the numbers and the sideline this is a great ball
06:07by JJ McCarthy in a clean pocket to to hit a receiver who has separation doesn't have to slow down
06:18to
06:18catch it and throws it on this opposite outside shoulder to where this inside this trail defender
06:25can't get his hand in there and rip that inside hand to to break the pass up look at that
06:33outside throw
06:34that's a dime so you see this DB here you see this right arm trying to get this receiver's right
06:39arm at
06:40that last second they're taught that when we receivers put our hands up they're taught to to go play
06:46play through the hands play through the hands now if it's an underthrown football here this defender has
06:52a chance to play through the hands and possibly get in there late if it's an underthrown football this
06:59receiver now has to slow down and this DB can now make up this separation here and make a play
07:08on the
07:09football you see this little brown dot right here that's not a stain on my computer that's the
07:15football and that ball being perfectly thrown in place on this receiver's outside shoulder and you
07:22see this defender doesn't have a chance with this right arm to be in phase and make a play on
07:30the
07:30football we always say there's no defense for a perfectly thrown football and that was a dart and a dime
07:37thrown and delivered on time and again it's all about these receivers getting yak putting them in the
07:44position to make plays in the rack up yardage after they catch the football all right now here's the
07:54element that he brings to this Giants offense or quarterback room that no other quarterback has and
08:05when you've developed and you've built a system and an offense around Jackson darts skill sets you need
08:14you're in a situation like this with dart out for the remainder of the season you can't just scrap the
08:20entire offense change blocking protections change route concepts you want to bring in a quarterback
08:28that has similar skill sets to the all to the quarterback to where you built the entire offense
08:35around and JJ McCarthy is more mobile and elusive than any other quarterback in that Giants quarterback
08:46room you can call design runs like you're about to see here for a JJ McCarthy no other quarterback in
08:55that room you can call a design QB run for and you saw the Giants do that a lot in
09:00the one one game
09:03and seven plays that they had Jackson dart saw it all throughout training camp all throughout well
09:09some in the preseason here RPO QB power I'm not the RPO design QB run off that read option
09:19now what we've been seeing teams do with Jameis is they've been taking this in because this is
09:28this is the guy that if he this DN right here if he crashes down then JJ McCarthy is going
09:37to keep it and
09:38now you've got numbers you they're outflanked but if he plays 50 50 and doesn't look like he's going to
09:45crash down then you hand it to the running back teams with Jameis in there have been automatically
09:54crashing down and playing the running back because they don't respect Jameis's wheels or mobility
10:01to make them pay and reach the outside because of his speed JJ McCarthy can do that so now they
10:10put
10:10this defender in the binder here on if he's going to crash and play the bop at the back and
10:18as soon
10:18as he takes those two hard steps and you see his arms flailing like like uh-oh changing McCarthy can
10:25now
10:26hit the outside you get the block from TJ Hawkinson here and now you get in the end zone but
10:33here's the
10:33thing here's the kicker now you can do even more because this is Hawkinson that could be Isaiah
10:42likely there this can now turn into a RPO this could turn in some sort of play action pass to
10:48where a
10:48defense overloads to one side to a strong side and now you have Isaiah likely one-on-one as kind
10:56of
10:56like this x receiver this backside receiver you can split them you've seen them have the you've seen
11:02them in close uh close splits to where he's not the end he's not like attached to this tackle here
11:09where he split a little bit you can have him a little bit wider you can do different things now
11:14with Isaiah likely and you can add this to your RPO you can add this to your run game you
11:20can add this to
11:21your pass game as well but JJ McCarthy gives you that ability to make a defense pay if they crash
11:29down
11:30on these read options the way that they've been doing with Jameis but but he hasn't been able
11:38to make a defense pay because he doesn't add that skill set to the to an offense to a run
11:45game like
11:45a Jackson Dart or JJ McCarthy all right that was a QB run that was a design QB run we
11:53just saw
11:54now I talked about earlier in the intro extending plays scrambling adding mobility if teams are only
12:04going to rush for you need a quarterback that can make them pay and gain some sort of positive yardage
12:11so you can stay ahead of the chains specifically in a run first offense so let's watch the play
12:16watch the scramble and then we'll just break down what JJ adds look pocket breaks down you've got
12:23space makes a guy miss and open in the open field goes in for a touchdown he's not throwing the
12:30football away not trying to force the football into a receiver everyone's covered everyone's covered
12:36in the pass rush I mean the pass protection broke down let's see how many they send one two three
12:45four
12:45and I believe that's Aiden Hutchinson and they have a T-E stunt here so now all this you got
12:54to make a team pay
12:55you have to make somebody pay if you're able to have all this space because you see you've got
13:01guys bracketed here you've got one-on-one here you've got a free safety in the middle of the field
13:07guy covered here everybody's pretty much covered if anything he's probably waiting on TJ Hawkinson to win
13:13his route but because you see leakage here you see blue color you're not taking a sack there JJ
13:21McCarthy can now get to the outside now pause it look at all this space he has to decide if
13:27he run if
13:28he wants to run or not by by him having the respect of this defense or his legs his mobility
13:36having the
13:37respect of this defense this now takes this backer I believe it's the linebacker here out of coverage
13:42so that's another guy that's one guy now that's out of coverage so now you can look for these one
13:47-on-ones
13:47maybe you do force it in there maybe your receiver gets open a little bit later it's hard to cover
13:52guys for three plus seconds but he decides to take it well it's a third down here you want you
14:00you want
14:00six you don't want to kick three six points wings wins games three points you know you're putting too
14:06much or you're asking for your defense to do too much if you're only getting three points in a drive
14:13or in a football game we saw that in the Titans game he has his one-on-one here a
14:18QB that can make
14:19a guy miss and go and get into the end zone and make them pay that's why the Giants or
14:25that's a big
14:26reason I feel like the Giants have brought him in not so much for the arm before his legs
14:33last but not least I believe this is like a second and long a second and forever it feels like
14:38or a
14:39third and long you'll see it but I believe this is the Falcons here they rush four again if they're
14:46gonna if a if a if a defensive front or coordinator is gonna rush four and drop seven that makes
14:53it
14:53harder for receivers to get open because spaces zones and spaces or guys are covered up you don't
15:00want anybody to try and force a throw into a crowded area so now let's watch it you've got a
15:07quarterback
15:07that can make somebody pay make a team pay get out of the pocket like he just did make a
15:14move you get a
15:15good block you get up the field and now instead of third or fourth and whatever now you get a
15:23uh now you get a third and manageable or maybe a fourth and manageable if you want to go for
15:28it
15:28but whatever it is look you got a quarterback that can scramble and get you positive yardage and make
15:36a defense pay when they drop seven I believe it's second down I think it's probably after some sort
15:42of holding penalty or something so this is second and extra long Vikings decided to throw the football
15:48down the field as a receiver I like it I love it I hate it when they do those draw
15:52like coordinators
15:53just call some draw or something like that can't stand it they're able to get guys out because it's
15:59clean one two three four they rush four protection breaks down on the back side steps up gets out of
16:07there so it shows he's elusive again it's second down here 30 10 about second and 20 almost look at
16:14him
16:14get out they can declare the run gets a great block here gets all that yardage back plus some so
16:23now
16:23that was what second and around 20 now we're looking at a third and one to looking at third and
16:30four
16:30after second and 20 all because his legs added value to a passing game and to an offense that Matt
16:39Nagy
16:40and this Giants offense desperately needs and that's why they brought in JJ McCarthy
16:48you see it he can throw the intermediate routes but most importantly he can use his legs and I think
16:54that's what Matt Nagy and John Harbaugh wants in this offense and everything I saw obviously those are
17:02highlights so those were the good plays but obviously there's a reason why he got passed on the
17:06Vikings depth chart behind Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz advanced metrics if you're into that type of
17:12stuff they were pretty much rough across the board bottom third pass grade negative EPA per play among
17:20all qualified passers and remember he missed his entire rookie year with the torn meniscus
17:25so he's still relatively inexperienced to other quarterbacks in his draft class but the
17:33escape ability plus team captain ish makeup a guy who his own locker room voted captain as a rookie
17:42starter you pair that mobility and leadership with a run heavy defense first identity and you don't need
17:51JJ McCarthy to be great you just need him to be efficient so bottom line can he save the season
17:58he wasn't traded to the Giants to save the season he was traded because he upgrades the current quarterback
18:07room we can all agree that we can all agree that he's not some sort of week four fix Jameis
18:13Winston
18:14is the guy for now JJ McCarthy has to still pick up the playbook but if Jameis Winston stumbles or
18:21even gets hurt which we all hope that doesn't happen McCarthy's back half of his 2025 tape
18:28says and shows that there's a competent game managing NFL starter in there
